Decomposition And The Freeze-Thaw Process In Northwestern Montana: A Preliminary Study, Laura Beth Wagster
Decomposition And The Freeze-Thaw Process In Northwestern Montana: A Preliminary Study, Laura Beth Wagster
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The goal of this project is to observe decomposition rates of four wolf carcasses over the duration of winter in northwestern Montana and to consider these rates as they apply to humans. Four wolf carcasses were studied in order to assess decomposition rates, particularly winter intervals of the freeze-thaw process and the possibility of the reemergence of insects during ideal conditions. It is hypothesized that the majority of insect activity on the carcasses will be limited to only internal activity during harsh weather conditions. Both carcasses placed in June decayed at predictable rates of decompositional stages and wolves 1 and …
Democratic Administration In The United States Forest Service, Nancy Leigh Leifer
Democratic Administration In The United States Forest Service, Nancy Leigh Leifer
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Pluralism, the dominant theory in citizen involvement in the United States Forest Service since the 1950s, has prolonged the process of determining the public interest by promoting the use of appeals and lawsuits. The advent of more collaborative public involvement strategies in the past fifteen years offers the opportunity to assess whether participatory democracy offers a better paradigm for determining the public interest. This research focused on four cases of reported successful collaboration in Region One of the Forest Service and involved in-person interviews with 17 Forest Service officials and 24 citizen and interest group leaders. The researcher translated pluralist …

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Kosky, Marlana M., M.A., Fall 2007 Sociology Living to Ride: A Sociological Study of Freeriders in Missoula Montana Chairperson: Robert W. Balch This paper is an ethnographic description of The Safety Team, a group of freeriders frequenting the Bike Doctor in Missoula Montana. Information about this faction of freeriding’s social world is revealed using the members’ own words and experiences as data. This study is meant to explore the significance of bike riding to the members of Missoula’s freeride “scene,” including its effect on their beliefs, values, and ethics. Qualitative methods are used including participant-observation structured within the theoretical framework …
Managing Multiple Identities: A Qualitative Study Of Nurses And Implications For Work-Family Balance, Claire Marie Spanier
Managing Multiple Identities: A Qualitative Study Of Nurses And Implications For Work-Family Balance, Claire Marie Spanier
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The ways in which people manage organizational, professional, and familial identities can have significant implications for work-family balance. This is particularly true for nurses, who have a strong sense of professional identity and may be likely to experience work-family tensions. By framing work-family tensions as related to identity, we can see the ways in which being a “good” employee, a “good” nurse, and a “good” family member are both complementary and contradictory. This study highlights ways in which being “good” employee facilitates and hinders an individual’s ability to be a “good” nurse. Furthermore, it demonstrates how being a “good” nurse …

Toward A Feminist Theory Of The Rural, Lisa R. Pruitt
Toward A Feminist Theory Of The Rural, Lisa R. Pruitt
Utah Law Review
Angela Harris argued almost two decades ago that, "to energize legal theory, we need to subvert it with narratives and stories, accounts of the particular, the different, the hitherto silenced. I have sought to do precisely that here: to surface the stories of rural women, one group who have been overlooked, misunderstood, and thus silenced. Rural women have been silenced not only because of the lack of power that stems from socioeconomic disadvantage, but also because of their physical distance from public places, from centers of power, from services, and from opportunities of all sorts. The deepest atrocities of their …
The Impact Of Grouping For Reading Instruction On Student Attitude And Self-Concept, Michelle Renee Keegan
The Impact Of Grouping For Reading Instruction On Student Attitude And Self-Concept, Michelle Renee Keegan
Graduate Research Papers
Researchers have found a parallel between types of grouping and attitudes of students regarding reading. The majority of students placed in the "lower" reading group in their classrooms have had negative perceptions and overall attitudes about reading. Research has indicated that the curriculum taught in these lower reading groups has differed from those in medium and higher groups due to different skills and practice that teachers have felt were required for students to succeed. Teachers' overall expectations have been found to be lower for those in lower academic groups in school. Students who have had motivation, self-efficacy, self worth, competence, …
Self-Esteem & Developmental Assets: An Examination Of The Pertinent Literature Off The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And Developmental Assets In Adolescents, Angela Gorsuch
Graduate Research Papers
Adolescent development has been studied heavily as scholars have sought to understand the process of biological, emotional, and cognitive development during the transition from childhood and adulthood. Research has often focused on one indicator, self-esteem, on how well young people navigate this transitional period in their lives. Scholars have agreed that self-esteem is a reflection of a young person's psychological well-being during adolescence. High self-esteem generally indicates an adolescent is successfully handling these critical years of development and is exhibiting positive qualities and behaviors. On the reverse, low self-esteem is often an indication an adolescent may not be negotiating this …

Acupuncture For Labor Pain Management A Review Of The Literature, Saraj Brainard
Graduate Research Papers
The process of giving birth is one of the most natural and instinctual processes in the animal world. Although natural, it is often a painful experience that the explanation for differs from culture to culture. Women have been giving birth naturally all over the world since the beginning of time even though there have been methods of pain management for many years. In Western society, we have used biomedical methods such as anesthesia and epidurals to relieve this pain since at least the 1960s (Rooks, 2000). Although the most generally accepted method of pain management, epidurals may not be the …
Voices In Cultural Heritage Preservation: A Comparative Study Between New Orleans And Changting (China), Guiyuan Wang
Voices In Cultural Heritage Preservation: A Comparative Study Between New Orleans And Changting (China), Guiyuan Wang
LSU Master's Theses
This is a comparative study between the historic preservation in two countries – the United States (New Orleans) and China (Changting). The main questions are how the voices of different groups become foregrounded or effaced in the dynamics of the political process. Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts -- social capital, cultural capital, and symbolic capital – are applied. The historic preservation in the United States is distinct from that in China. First, the national structures of governments are different, and the historic preservation systems are established in dissimilar ways. Second, at the local level, the question, that who take part in historic …
Evaluating The Effects Of A Multi-Component School-Based Nutrition Intervention Program In Elementary School Students, Linda Silverman
Evaluating The Effects Of A Multi-Component School-Based Nutrition Intervention Program In Elementary School Students, Linda Silverman
LSU Master's Theses
The objective of the study was to evaluate a multi-component school-based nutrition intervention program, Smart Bodies, to see if the curriculum increased nutrition knowledge, increased self-reported intakes of fruits and vegetables, and improved opinions, outcome expectations, social norms, and self-efficacy related to fruit and vegetables among elementary school students. The Smart Bodies curriculum was conducted in the classrooms of eighteen public schools in south Louisiana over a twelve-week period and included nutrition related games, videos, books and classroom activity tracking charts. Six hundred forty-one 4th and 5th grade students were included in the sample. A survey based on the Social …

Community Forestry Education In The Swan Valley, Mt: Contributions Of Northwest Connections' Field Program, Joanna Elizabeth Seibert
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
As the community forestry movement matures, a question remains regarding what kind of educational experience nurtures and inspires people in community forestry? This thesis seeks to contribute to a better understanding of community forestry education by examining a field educational program known as “Landscape and Livelihood” (LL) offered by Northwest Connections, a small community-based conservation organization in the upper Swan Valley of western Montana. Based on extensive interviews, observation and the author’s own personal experience as a former LL student, the thesis documents the program’s use of field ecological studies involving both scientific and local knowledge integrated with journaling, homestays, …
Neighborhood Effects Of Public Housing: How The Level Of Public Housing Concentration Influences Neighborhood Crime Levels, Paul Joice
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
Public housing is plagued by the well known “not-in-my-backyard” (NIMBY) phenomenon. People may support the existence of public housing, but oppose it in their neighborhood. This is particularly relevant to “scattered site” public housing – which has a much lower density than “traditional” public housing – because, by its very essence, scattered site public housing will be “in more backyards”. Public protests against such programs have made it clear that people don’t care about the positive effects for the public housing tenants nearly as much as they care about perceived negative effects on their neighborhood.
My goal is to …

Violent Personal Crimes On Campus: The Influence Of Size, Setting, And Police Presence, Chris Mckinney
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
Statement of the Problem
Violent campus crime, in particular rape and aggravated assault, has become more pronounced in the last several decades. The judicial and legislative branches have responded through court decisions and legal enactments that require most universities to collect and report campus crime data. Many concerns have arisen as to the effectiveness and implications associated with such mandates. Some believe current laws do little to improve campus safety. Some suggested solutions to address campus crime have involved safety initiatives/programs and potential staffing increases to their campus police force.

Spillover Effects Of The Robinson Scholars Program In The Service Area, Carla S. Tabeling
Spillover Effects Of The Robinson Scholars Program In The Service Area, Carla S. Tabeling
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
High rates of poverty and low levels of educational attainment have plagued the Appalachian region throughout history. The Robinson Scholars Program was created in 1996 as part of the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees’ plan to support economic and community development in Appalachian Kentucky.
The Robinson Scholars Program is a scholarship and student support program that serves first-generation college and college-bound students from twenty-nine Eastern Kentucky counties with historically low rates of college attendance. The Program’s mission is to empower students to complete baccalaureate degrees and thereby add to the educational capital of their communities. The first class of …

The Perfect Storm: Catastrophic Collapse In The 21st Century, Glen Kuecker
History Faculty publications
This paper utilizes complex systems theory to argue that we are currently living in catastrophic collapse of the global system. It focuses on topics like climate chance, ecological destruction, pandemics, fuel shortages, warfare, and global hunger to illustrate the interconnections between multiple points of failure within the global system. The argument maintains that sustainability perspectives miss the fundamental reality of the global crisis.

Deceptive Appearances: Judges,Cognitive Bias, And Dress Codes, Marybeth Herald
Deceptive Appearances: Judges,Cognitive Bias, And Dress Codes, Marybeth Herald
University of San Francisco Law Review
This Article argues that judges are not immune from decision-making biases that afflict humans generally, and cognitive biases may guide interpretations of the law. Moreover, because of a predisposition toward preserving the statusquo, judicial interpretations of anti-discrimination laws may keep us close to our starting positions despite legislative directives to the contrary. Accordingly, judicial alertness to cognitive biases, including judges's own and those of the participants in their courtroom, becomes even more important.

"Prisoner Never Gave Me Anything For What He Done:" Aboriginal Voices In The Criminal Court, Shelley A. M. Gavigan
"Prisoner Never Gave Me Anything For What He Done:" Aboriginal Voices In The Criminal Court, Shelley A. M. Gavigan
Articles & Book Chapters
Aboriginal people participated in different ways in the criminal process in the earl years of the North- West Territories region of Canada, including, as accused persons, as Informants, and as witnesses. Their participation was often mediated by the police, Indian agents and sometimes their Chiefs. Their word were also mediated by interpreters, both linguistic and cultural and their signatures were invariably marked as "X" on their depositions. Scholarship that has examined the relationship of Aboriginal peoples to the criminal law has tended to interrogate the criminalization and moral regulation strategies implicit in the process of colonization and domination of the …

Institutional Review Boards, Regulatory Incentives, And Some Modest Proposals For Reform, Dale Carpenter
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
It is time to rethink the role of Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) in approving social science research. While most law professors conduct their research in an almost unregulated environment - pouring through cases, statutes, and each other's articles, all without the kind of human interaction subject to IRB regulation - their colleagues elsewhere in the university have been coping for decades with an increasingly intrusive bureaucracy that sometimes undermines basic academic values. Three things seem very clear. First, there are a lot of IRBs - at least 4,000 - and their numbers are growing. Second, they have recently "increased their …

A Redefined Feminine From Paleolithic To Twenty-First Century Through Children's Literature & Film, Pamela Dee Mccombs
A Redefined Feminine From Paleolithic To Twenty-First Century Through Children's Literature & Film, Pamela Dee Mccombs
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The intention of my critical discourse is to redefine the knowledge of the feminine that Western tradition, through “master narratives,” silenced, subverted, and deferred. My guidelines were drawn from the deconstruction of philosophical works by Jacques Derrida and redefined the unique circle of “Being and beings” to be not just God and man, but God, Goddess, and Human, the Goddess being the original feminine. I discovered the feminine beginning, through archaeomythologists Gimbutas, Dever, and Davis-Kimball, with the unearthing of female figurines, temple models, and warrior priestesses. I found examples of the feminine survival through the Dark Ages in Lithuanian Dainos …
