Fairfax County's Commitment: A Housing And Health Continuum For Seniors, Judith D. Moore, Lisa Sprague

National Health Policy Forum

This one-day site visit focused on the range of services made available to seniors by Fairfax County, Virginia, including senior centers, adult day health care, and assisted living and independent housing. Services to low-income residents were emphasized. Participants were introduced to the different agencies and funding streams involved and were able to observe how county officials have acted on a stated commitment to help seniors who wish to age in place, staying in the county and in their own homes rather than in a nursing home or other institution. The day included tours of two Fairfax County multiservice sites, in …

Evangelical Christians In Canadian National Television News, 1994–2004: A Frame Analysis, David M. Haskell Mar 2007

Evangelical Christians In Canadian National Television News, 1994–2004: A Frame Analysis, David M. Haskell

Journalism

Recent surveys have shown that most evangelical Christians in Canada believe that the news media treat them unfairly. This study empirically tested the validity of the evangelicals’ charge against the media by examining the frames used in the nightly, national news reports of Global, CBC and CTV television networks. An analysis of all reports featuring evangelicals showed that neutral and positive frames, together, were almost equal in strength and number to negative frames used; this resulted in an overall rating of “balanced” for the coverage.

While overall the coverage was balanced, the frequency and exclusivity of certain negative frames elevated …

Protecting Gay And Lesbian Families From Eviction From Their Homes: The Quest For Equality For Gay And Lesbian Families In Braschi V. Stahl Associates, Paris R. Baldacci Mar 2007

Protecting Gay And Lesbian Families From Eviction From Their Homes: The Quest For Equality For Gay And Lesbian Families In Braschi V. Stahl Associates, Paris R. Baldacci

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

As indicated above, much of the Author's professional life has been involved in writing about and litigating Braschi-related matters. However, the theme of this Conference-how law and its practitioners affect issues of freedom, equality, and justice-has given the Author the opportunity to begin to address questions raised when the Author first watched the tape of the Braschi oral argument and then read the ACLU briefs, but which the Author has not had the opportunity to address since then. Those questions are: 1) What role did Braschi's lawyers play in the Court's formulation of a functional definition of family? 2) Was …

Why Is Fairness ‘Grubby’? - Semantics, Etymology, And Perspectives In Dispute Resolution, Barbara Wilson, Alastair Wilson Mar 2007

Why Is Fairness ‘Grubby’? - Semantics, Etymology, And Perspectives In Dispute Resolution, Barbara Wilson, Alastair Wilson

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

Delivering judgment in the House of Lords in the case of White v White (subsequently a leading legal precedent in this jurisdiction) Lord Nicholls of Birkenhead famously opined: "Features which are important when assessing fairness differ in each case. And, sometimes, different minds can reach different conclusions on what fairness requires. Then fairness, like beauty, lies in the eye of the beholder." His Lordship's comment in this landmark divorce appeal is interesting in the context of this paper, which is written from the perspective of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) practice, specifically that of family mediation. The authors set out to …

Self-Efficacy Of First-Generation College Students And The Relationship To Academic Performance And College Adjustment, Lucila Ramos-Sánchez, Laura Nichols

Sociology

The authors examined whether self-efficacy mediated the relationship between generational status and 2 academic outcome indicators of 192 college students. A mediation effect was not found with either academic performance or college adjustment. However, high self-efficacy at the beginning of the year predicted better college adjustment at the end of the 1st year. For college students in general, high self-efficacy was related to better college adjustment. Recommendations for counselors are discussed.

Civic And Citizenship Education In 2009 (Iccs): A Comparative Study, Wolfram Schulz, John Ainley

Civics and Citizenship Assessment

It is over the ten years since IEA last investigated civic education, and in that time new challenges have emerged in educating young people for their roles as citizens in the 21st century. These challenges have stimulated renewed reflection on the meanings of citizenship and the roles of and approaches to civic and citizenship education. In many countries there is a growing interest in using evidence to improve policy and practice in civic and citizenship education. The purpose of the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) is to investigate the ways in which young people are prepared to undertake …

Risk And Protective Factors Predictive Of Sense Of Coherence During Adolescence, Shawn C. Marsh, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard, Rebecca M. Thomas, William P. Evans

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

This brief report presents a study undertaken to better understand the factors that are related to sense of coherence (SOC) levels among youth. Middle school students (N = 1619) reported on risk and protective factors across ecological domains. Analyses revealed that social support, anger expression, family conflict and neighborhood cohesion were predictors of SOC for both males and females. Community views regarding gang membership was a predictor of SOC only for males, while age was a predictor of SOC only for females. The findings suggest a resiliency and ecological framework may be helpful in understanding SOC in youth.

Agencies Of Slavery: The Exploitation Of Migrant Workers By Recruitment Agencies, Elaine Dewhurst Mar 2007

Agencies Of Slavery: The Exploitation Of Migrant Workers By Recruitment Agencies, Elaine Dewhurst

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This paper has been led by the desire to reinstate the concept of real consent back into the discourse on migration and the recruitment process. An examination of the concept of recruitment for employ ment and of recruitment agencies will reveal the important role such intermediaries play in the international migration process. This will be followed by a brief description of both the international and national regulations presently governing recruitment agencies. The experience of Ireland and its recent unique encounters with international migration for employment will be used as a case study to demonstrate the types of obstacles that prevent …

Interval Approach To Preserving Privacy In Statistical Databases: Related Challenges And Algorithms Of Computational Statistics, Luc Longpre, Gang Xiang, Vladik Kreinovich, Eric Freudenthal

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, it is important to store large amounts of data and to be able to statistically process the data. A large part of the data is confidential, so while we welcome statistical data processing, we do not want to reveal sensitive individual data. If we allow researchers to ask all kinds of statistical queries, this can lead to violation of people's privacy. A sure-proof way to avoid these privacy violations is to store ranges of values (e.g., between 40 and 50 for age) instead of the actual values. This idea solves the privacy problem, but it leads …

The Lazarus Project: The Dying And Raising Of The Rural Church In The Minnesota North District-Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, Richard John Manual Hans Mar 2007

The Lazarus Project: The Dying And Raising Of The Rural Church In The Minnesota North District-Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, Richard John Manual Hans

Doctor of Ministry

Rural communities and the church at large currently face the difficult challenge of rapidly dying rural churches. As a result of this decline the six thousand churches in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) face a number of issues including the loss of financial aid for mission work in United States and abroad. The closure of this one church also affects the middle judicatory. The district depends financially upon the churches in its district to support mission starts and financial concerns affect a congregation's ability to support a pastor. Overall, the closure of the local church demonstrates a lack of …

Legend Tripping As Field Research: Investigating The Connection Of “Satanic Tourism” To Juvenile Delinquency, Gordon A. Crews, Virginia Adame, Rochelle Andrews, Kofi Boye-Doe, Juna Green, Shawn Kirby, Ori Onazi, Jill Schalansky, Cale Urban, Justin Zabokrtsky

Criminal Justice Faculty Research

Gary Alan Fine and Jeffrey Victor (1994) defined “legend trips” as inherently delinquent juvenile activities at geographic sites associated with some tragic event, rumored to be supernatural or related to the occult. “Satanic tourism” is a type of legend trip characterized by juvenile involvement in pseudo-Satanic/occult behavior, such as drawing pentagrams, writing epithets, and burning candles. A juvenile may visit a geographic location such as an abandoned church, historic graveyard, or reputedly “haunted” site, and engage in mischievous, destructive, or “ritualistic” behaviors as “rites of passage.” These activities, which often are relatively harmless and conducted primarily for juvenile thrills, may …

Determinants Of Attitudes Toward Having Children Outside Marriage, Amir Erfani, Roderic Beaujot Mar 2007

Determinants Of Attitudes Toward Having Children Outside Marriage, Amir Erfani, Roderic Beaujot

PSC Discussion Papers Series

In the context of low fertility and a high proportion of persons who are not living in marital unions, it is important to study the attitudes toward having children outside of marriage. Based on a sample from Oxford and Middlesex counties in Ontario, Canada, we find that there are more positive attitudes toward having children outside of marriage for persons who have a more liberal orientation to gender division of labour and to cohabitation, those who are less religious, have smaller ideal family size, and where the first relationship was a cohabiting union. While the relation was not significant, there …
