A Communication Perspective Of Alcoholism Recovery: Narratives Of Success, Kathryn Grace Arlen Apr 2007

A Communication Perspective Of Alcoholism Recovery: Narratives Of Success, Kathryn Grace Arlen

Communication

Understanding alcoholism and how it wreaks havoc upon the human condition has been and continues to be a prime concern for social scientists, psychologists, physicians, therapists, the legal system, a host of other concerned professionals, and society in general, particularly those who suffer from this "dis-ease" (Denzin, 1987a). Much past research has focused upon physiological concerns, suggesting disease, genetic, or even allergic connections. While such research certainly carries significant import and credibility, this study focuses on the social construction of the alcoholic identity and eventual evolution into a recovering identity. The methodology of narrative inquiry with conversational interviewing as method …

Putting The Pieces Together: Examining The Division Between Christian And Secular Elements Of Muscular Christianity, Rodney D. Knudsen Apr 2007

Putting The Pieces Together: Examining The Division Between Christian And Secular Elements Of Muscular Christianity, Rodney D. Knudsen

Senior Honors Theses

Around the turn of the 20th century a movement called Muscular Christianity was extremely influential in The United States. Despite the name, there was a very strong secular aspect to this movement. A portion of this movement was dedicated to more closely uniting masculinity with the church and Christianity. This group consisted of various personalities and groups that supported a similar message for men and the church at large. The most apparent aspect of this was the Men and Religion Forward Movement of 1911-12. This was a major rally and marketing based movement of men in Christianity.

The many pieces …

Rituals Of Care: A Look At The Church's Ministry With The Sick, Lizette Larson-Miller Apr 2007

Rituals Of Care: A Look At The Church's Ministry With The Sick, Lizette Larson-Miller

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(excerpt) "I had an interesting experience last month writing an article on Christian healing for a journal of medicine. The parameters of the requested article were a bit vague, and as I prodded the editor with questions I realized just how much I was in un-chartered territory. The familiar concepts (or, more to the point) the familiar assumptions that are part of an insider conversation theologically and ecclesiologically were missing, and I found myself having to carefully spell out the focus of what I thought might be helpful to discuss in a journal read solely by health professionals. The experience …

Single Sex Classrooms, How Boys And Girls Learn Differently: A Guide Book For Elementary Teachers, Desiree Cyr

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Single Sex Classrooms, How Boys and Girls Learn Differently Gurian (2004) examined the differences between girls and boys. He reported girls and boys learn fundamentally differently. This applied project identifies these differences and provides strategies that teachers can use in the classroom. The strategies are effective for boys and girls at the elementary school level. Implementing these strategies will enable teachers to address the gender specific learning needs of both boys and girls.

Latino Community Abused By Police Brutality, Immigration Raids, Economic Apartheid/La Comunidad Latina Sufre Constantes Abusos Por Parte De La Policia, La Migra, Y La Economia, Gil Villagran

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

It has become clear that  too many Latinos are increasingly at risk of their liberties, education and health care, their livelihoods, indeed—in some cases—their very lives. If these risks are due to violent behavior, laziness, poor choices, unhealthy lifestyles, and an unwillingness to work,  then it is understandable that people suffer the consequences of their actions.  But we know the prevailing truth of our Latino cultural values:  hard work, taking care of family, honesty, sharing with others.  And if we came to the U.S. as immigrants (with documents or without), we came out of desperation—eager to work hard at an honest …

Rights, Wrongs, And Comparative Justifications, Vera Bergelson Apr 2007

Rights, Wrongs, And Comparative Justifications, Vera Bergelson

Rutgers Law School (Newark) Faculty Papers

The goal of this article is to rethink the relationship between the concepts of justification and wrongdoing, which play vital roles in the theory of criminal law. Reading George P. Fletcher’s new book, The Grammar of Criminal Law, in the context of his earlier scholarship has led me to one major disagreement with Fletcher as well as with the traditional criminal law doctrine: for Fletcher and many others, wrongdoing and justification mutually exclude each other; for me, they do not.

Consider a hypothetical: a group of people are captured by criminals. The criminals are about to kill everyone but then …

French Framing Of Anna Karenina: Confused Identities In Russian Aristocratic Culture, Devin Conley '07 Apr 2007

French Framing Of Anna Karenina: Confused Identities In Russian Aristocratic Culture, Devin Conley '07

Honors Projects

Anna Karenina uses Russian identities and Russian language in opposition to European culture and French language to highlight the superficiality ofthe Russian aristocracy in the nineteenth century. In the context of the novel, honesty to oneself worth is the highest expression of being; unless one lives in truth, one cannot lay claim to a genuine existence. Culture and, more importantly, cultural identity provide this appraisal and affirmation of our own self-worth, as well as a framework in which to approach life.
