The solace of finding mother provides comfort in most Buddhist societies. The Diné follow the mother in proximity of all life. This abstract considers parallel significance for two mothers of tradition, who lead their respective followers to a life of spreading knowledge and wisdom. Yeshe Tsogyel is significant in spreading the teaching of Tantra Buddhism, and Changing Woman provides the Din4 the importance of reproduction.

As part of its larger Diversity Initiative, the McCormack Graduate School of Policy Studies at UMass Boston has undertaken a number of projects. The first was a public opinion survey conducted around the time of the November 2006 elections. The report, Transformation and Taking Stock: A Summary of Selected Findings from the McCormack Graduate School Diversity Survey, included a comprehensive look at race relations in the Commonwealth at a time of significant transition—demographically and politically. This report was followed by A Benchmark Report on Diversity in State and Local Government, which focused on the percentage of positions filled …

Gender Issue And Water Management In The Mediterranean Basin, Middle East And North Africa, Giulia Minoia
Gender Issue And Water Management In The Mediterranean Basin, Middle East And North Africa, Giulia Minoia
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This article aims to investigate some aspects of the social process related to water resources management and gender relations. Given that gender and water management are interrelated issues exposed to a growing attention at the international level, it is therefore necessary to identify relations between the academic literature, the institutional framework and the field-based research. This document has been inspired by the Nostrum DSS project (Network on Governance, Science and Technology for Sustainable Water Resources Management in the Mediterranean), a Co-ordination Action funded by the European Commission, which involves eighteen partners from the North and South shores of the basin. …

How The Public Library Contributes To Community Building: A Case Study, Barbara J. Snyder
How The Public Library Contributes To Community Building: A Case Study, Barbara J. Snyder
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate how one local New Jersey public library contributed to the revitalization efforts of its community by building social networks that benefitted all members of the community. Because the nature of the study dealt with conditions that were social, the qualitative method of research was chosen. A personal interview was used to collect information on how the library built social networks within the community it served by identifying and connecting the library's assets to the community's. The data were compared to a model developed from a previous study, The Engaged Library: Chicago Stories …

Rural Children Increasingly Rely On Medicaid And State Child Health Insurance Programs For Medical Care, William P. O'Hare
Carsey Publications
Despite a flurry of reports on health insurance coverage for children, virtually none of them have examined the unique situation of rural families where one-fifth of all the nation's poor children live. This brief takes an in-depth look at the health insurance programs, such as SCHIP and Medicaid, which rural children rely on for medical care.

Information Literacy At Augustana: A Programmatic Approach, Nancy E. Goebel, Paul J. Neff
Communications in Information Literacy
Information literacy programs, and the factors that influence their development and structure, can vary significantly from institution to institution. Credit-bearing discipline-specific information literacy courses are a rare and valuable component of an undergraduate educational experience and form the basis of Augustana's information literacy program. This article provides an overview of the development, implementation, successes, and drawbacks of the credit-bearing discipline-specific information literacy courses at the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta (Camrose, Alberta, Canada). Additional program components including Augustana's annual information literacy workshop, information literacy awards, information literacy DVD, and marketing/branding, are discussed.

Exploring Strategies For Integrated Information Literacy: From "Academic Champions" To Institution-Wide Change, Claire Mcguinness
Exploring Strategies For Integrated Information Literacy: From "Academic Champions" To Institution-Wide Change, Claire Mcguinness
Communications in Information Literacy
In this paper, the author critically reviews the strategies that have been adopted by librarians to secure academic support for curriculum-integrated information literacy (IL) instruction, and questions whether the popular approach of targeting individual academics offers a suitable foundation for the establishment of long-term IL programs. The paper suggests that librarians should instead align their IL objectives with the overall academic mission of their institutions and seek out the means to effect a more wide-ranging change in the academic culture, where IL is recognized as a core educational value. Several strategies are suggested by which this aim may be achieved.

Do Social Relations Affect Economic Welfare? A Microeconomic Empirical Analysis, Giacomo Degli Antoni
Do Social Relations Affect Economic Welfare? A Microeconomic Empirical Analysis, Giacomo Degli Antoni
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Over the last few years, many studies have shown that social networks affect the socioeconomic development. This paper presents evidence, through the Italian microdata representative of the entire Italian population, that the quality and quantity of interpersonal relations of agents can increase their economic welfare. Two proxies of interpersonal relations at an individual level are considered: a proxy for the density and one for the quality of network structure of personal contacts. Both seem to have a positive effect on the level of household economic welfare of agents. This result proves robust to the inclusion of a variety of control …
The Neoliberal Myth In Latin America: The Cases Of Mexico And Argentina In The ‘90s, Veronica Ronchi
The Neoliberal Myth In Latin America: The Cases Of Mexico And Argentina In The ‘90s, Veronica Ronchi
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
During the ‘90s most Latin American countries were submitted to neoliberal structural reform policies. Neoliberal policies imposed market supremacy, reduced the State’s role in the economy and deregulated the markets. This paper aims at describing how these policies affected the most important macroeconomic indexes, with special emphasis on Argentina and Mexico, the two countries that suffered most from the economic crises of the ‘80s and ‘90s, and where the neoliberal policies were applied with greater orthodoxy. In spite of a slight improvement in some macroeconomic indexes, in Latin America neoliberalism failed to reduce poverty and unemployment, and was unable to …
Racial Disparities In Mortality Risks In A Sample Of The U.S. Medicare Population, Yijie Zhou, Francesca Dominici, Thomas A. Louis
Racial Disparities In Mortality Risks In A Sample Of The U.S. Medicare Population, Yijie Zhou, Francesca Dominici, Thomas A. Louis
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
Racial disparities in mortality risks adjusted by socioeconomic status (SES) are not well understood. To add to the understanding of racial disparities, we construct and analyze a data set that links, at individual and zip code levels, three government databases: Medicare, Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey and U.S. Census. Our study population includes more than 4 million Medicare enrollees residing in 2095 zip codes in the Northeast region of U.S. We develop hierarchical models to estimate Black-White disparity in risk of death, adjusted by both individual-level and zip codelevel income. We define population-level attributable risk (AR), relative attributable risk (RAR) and …
