Tragedies Of Our Own Making, Gil Villagran
Tragedies Of Our Own Making, Gil Villagran
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
A recent count of American annual deaths caused by firearms, gangs, domestic violence, child abuse and drugs rate higher than all the victims of all wars fought since the Revolutionary War to the present, also a self-inflicted war of choice in Iraq. In other words, we are a nation killing ourselves by tragedies of our own making. What can you do to avert such tragedy in your family? Destroy (not sell) the firearms you have, seek counseling to resolve anger and violence in your family, cure your substance abuse addictions, and live a healthy life to the fullest with your …

The Competing Influence Of Secularism And Religion On Science Education In A Secular Society, William W. Cobern
The Competing Influence Of Secularism And Religion On Science Education In A Secular Society, William W. Cobern
Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project
We live in country where by Constitution there can be no religious test for public office. On the other hand, we have a Bill of Rights that guarantees the free exercise of religion. We call this a secular system of government, and sometimes go so far as to use Jefferson's phrase that there is a wall between church and state. For the most part this secular system of government comports well with the teachings of Christianity based on Jesus’ remark that one should render unto Caesar that which belongs to Caesar, and unto God that which belongs to God.

Technology Bridge To Employment: A Community Technology Initiative, Rosalind Bain
Theses
As the economic gap continues to widen between the rich and poor, we will continue to see people (primarily the poor) experiencing a number of social problems, including being cut off from accessing modern technology. In many small cities and rural areas throughout the United States, there is sufficient evidence that shows poor people are not as connected to or knowledgeable about modern technological advances and their application within the wider society. This puts them at a disadvantage and hinders their chances for both professional and economic growth. The author involved in the capstone served as the volunteer lead instructor …

Hysteria, Greed, And The Public Purse: The Litigation Impacting A Local Governmental Agency, Claire D. Simno
Hysteria, Greed, And The Public Purse: The Litigation Impacting A Local Governmental Agency, Claire D. Simno
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This research is a case study of the litigation in progress by hundreds of St. Bernard Parish families against the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans and Browning Ferris Industries (BFI). The families are suing for personal and property damages sustained as a result of the poor operation and maintenance of the East Bank Sewerage Treatment Plant (EBSTP) and the Crescent Acres Landfill. The purpose of the study will be to examine the consequences, links, and process of interaction among three key units of analysis: the plaintiffs, their lawyers, and one of the major defendants in the litigation, the …
The Social Construction Of Loss And Grief: Experiences Of Coastal Louisiana Residents, Nicole Buras
The Social Construction Of Loss And Grief: Experiences Of Coastal Louisiana Residents, Nicole Buras
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The overall goal of this study is to gain a better understanding of disaster-stricken communities using the experiences of the community of Boothville-Venice, Louisiana, and examining their narratives for an understanding of loss. This thesis uses symbolic interactionism, and draws from existing literature in psychology, thanatology, and sociology to develop the understanding of loss and grief. The strategy of inquiry employed for this qualitative study is ethnography, and the study uses fifteen in-depth interviews. The analysis addresses the pre-Katrina reality of residents, broken into the six dimensions (Community, Work, Family, Identity, Faith in the Systems, and Future), then compared to …
A Methodological Exploration Of Mailed Survey Research In A Post Disaster Setting, Michelle Gremillion
A Methodological Exploration Of Mailed Survey Research In A Post Disaster Setting, Michelle Gremillion
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This paper analyzes and assesses the success and failures of the implemented methods of two mailed survey research projects conducted in post-Katrina New Orleans. Mailed survey research is an essential part of the recovery process following a major disaster in which people have been displaced. A survey can provide insight into how many residents intend to return to the area as well as resident needs and concerns. Traditional methods alone are inadequate in a post-disaster setting and supplemental measures must be taken. The collected data from a survey in this setting will be unrepresentative of the pre-disaster population. Spatial analysis …
Race & Crime On The Evening News: New Orleans In The Days After Hurricane Katrina, Kristin Ashby Schwartz
Race & Crime On The Evening News: New Orleans In The Days After Hurricane Katrina, Kristin Ashby Schwartz
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This study examines how residents of New Orleans, Louisiana were depicted on a variety of evening news programs in the days after hurricane Katrina. A qualitative content analysis of television news transcripts and select audio-visual footage reveals how the media framed crime, the perpetrators of crime and "looting." Media perpetuation of myths such as residents shooting at helicopters and the focus on "looting" and crime had on initial rescue and recovery efforts are also discussed. Results illustrate that the focus on crime, criminals, and looting was more pronounced in cable than network news. Looting was framed as a criminal endeavor …

The Lived Experiences Of Immigrant Arab Muslim Women In The United States: Implications For Counselors And Other Helping Professionals, Iman En-Nabut
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
As the demographic landscape of the United States continues to change, counselors along with other helping professionals are going to be challenged to find ways to meet the varying personal, social, and academic needs of an increasingly multiracial, multi-religious, and multicultural population. This study was an attempt to document and explain through an ethnographic study the experiences of six immigrant Arab Muslim women, ranging in age from 21 to 35, living in the United States. Data were gathered in the participants' natural setting, utilizing ethnographic interviews. The general research question was "What are the lived experiences of immigrant Arab Muslim …
Relationships Of Self-Efficacy, Exercise, Social Support To Strain And Burnout In University Faculty, Mark P. Kelly
Relationships Of Self-Efficacy, Exercise, Social Support To Strain And Burnout In University Faculty, Mark P. Kelly
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between occupational selfefficacy, exercise behaviors, and social support with strain and burnout in faculty. Previous studies have shown each variable is associated with reduced strain. The Demand-Control- Supports Theory by Karasek and Theorell (1990) asserts when an individual is in a work situation characterized by high demands, low control, and low social support they will tend to have strain symptoms. Burnout is another psychological strain symptom common in the teaching profession. The current study used the three different variables mentioned and determined their relationships to reported strain and burnout. A …
Counselors' Perceptions Of Identity And Attitudinal Differences Between Counselors And Other Mental Health Professionals, Latifey B. Lafleur
Counselors' Perceptions Of Identity And Attitudinal Differences Between Counselors And Other Mental Health Professionals, Latifey B. Lafleur
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A strong, distinctive professional identity is essential for the survival of mental health professions (Fall, Leviov, Jennings, & Eberts, 2000). Although the literature of the various mental health professions offers varying definitions of professional identity, differentiating their services from one another continues to be a problem (Remley & Herlihy, 2005). This uncertainty inhibits uniformity within professions, and causes confusion within the public as to what each mental health field actually does and does not do. Psychologists and social workers have dedicated years of effort to define their professions, providing extensive literature rooted in the history, values, beliefs, and the knowledge …
