Data Note: Vr Rehabilitation Rates Of People With Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities (Mr/Dd) In 2005, Frank A. Smith, Alberto Migliore

Data Note Series, Institute for Community Inclusion

Of the over 48,000 persons nationwide with mental retardation or other developmental disabilities (MR/DD) who closed out of the Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) system after receiving employment services in FY2005, more than half were successful closures, yielding a rehabilitation rate of 56.9%. This rehabilitation rate is calculated by dividing the number of successful closures, which is employment in any setting with the exception of sheltered workshops, by the total number of closures who received employment services.

The Philosophy Of Mathematics, Values And Keralese Mathematics, Paul Ernest Jun 2007

The Philosophy Of Mathematics, Values And Keralese Mathematics, Paul Ernest

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This paper explores the philosophical significance of the Keralese and Indian subcontinent contribution to history of mathematics. Identifying the most accurate genesis and trajectory of mathematical ideas in history that current knowledge allows should be the goal of every history of mathematics, and is consistent with any philosophy of mathematics. I argue for the need of a broader conceptualization of philosophy of than the traditional emphasis on scholastic enquiries into epistemology and ontology. For such an emphasis has been associated, though I add need not necessarily be so, with an ideological position that devalues non-European contributions to history of mathematics. …

Disability As Embodied Memory? A Question Of Identity For The Amputees Of Sierra Leone, Maria Berghs Jun 2007

Disability As Embodied Memory? A Question Of Identity For The Amputees Of Sierra Leone, Maria Berghs

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This paper examines the problematic construction of amputee identity in Sierra Leone society after the decade long civil war through discourses and imagery of amputees presented in the media. Empowerment by NGO’s and other charities lead to a reaffirmation of amputee identity in which notions of class, ethnicity, and age may not play a big role, but gender certainly remains a relevant cultural marker.

Colonial Discourses Of Disability And Normalization In Contemporary Francophone Immigrant Narratives: Bessora’S 53 Cm And Fatou Diome’S Le Ventre De ’Atlantique, Julie Nack Ngue

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

In this paper, I examine recent Francophone immigrant narratives in a disability studies framework to reveal the ways in which colonial discourses of illness and disability on the Black female body haunt contemporary discussions of immigration and integration. While these novels portray female immigrant bodies as subject to constant surveillance and examination within multiple institutions of ‘normalization,’ they also expose oppressive discourses of illness and disability in order to challenge the paradigms of normality and homogeneity which undergird French treatment of immigrants.

Vitalism: Subjectivity Exceeding Racism,Sexism And (Psychiatric) Ableism, James Overboe Jun 2007

Vitalism: Subjectivity Exceeding Racism,Sexism And (Psychiatric) Ableism, James Overboe

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

Liberal discourse has argued against the pathology of differences that stem from being gendered or racialized. Yet, liberal discourse continues to pathologize the differences that derive from disabilities whether physical, mental, and/or developmental. This paper considers the position of a woman who is the site of the coming together of being gendered, being aboriginal, and being psychiatrized, and argues that her vitalism that has been psychiatrized benefits her subjectivity.

Religious Influences On Work–Family Trade-Offs, Samantha K. Ammons Jun 2007

Religious Influences On Work–Family Trade-Offs, Samantha K. Ammons

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Despite a large body of research on the influences of religion on family life and gender ideology, few studies examined how religion affects work—family strategies. One set of strategies involves making employment or family trade-offs—strategies of devoting time or attention to either work or family in a situation in which one cannot devote the preferred amount of time and attention to both, strategies that may be experienced as making sacrifices, hard choices, or accommodations. Using 1996 General Social Survey data, the authors analyze how religion affects employment and family trade-offs. They develop hypotheses about the institutional effects of religious involvement …

應用多站迷你面試(Mmi)選擇學士後醫學系學生, 克明 劉, 奕馨 楊, 敏 劉, 竹來 葉, 春生 賴, 俊雄 黃

Journal of Medical Education

The Failure Of Economic Interpretations Of The Law Of Contract Damages, Nathan B. Oman Jun 2007

The Failure Of Economic Interpretations Of The Law Of Contract Damages, Nathan B. Oman

Washington and Lee Law Review

The law of contracts is complex but remarkably stable. What we lack is a widely accepted interpretation of that law as embodying a coherent set of normative choices. Some scholars have suggested that either economic efficiency or personal autonomy provide unifying principles of contract law. These two approaches, however, seem incommensurable, which suggests that we must reject at least one of them in order to have a coherent theory. This Article dissents from this view and has a simple thesis: Economic accounts of the current doctrine governing contract damages have failed, but efficiency arguments remain key to any adequate theory …

"Sociological Legitimacy" In Supreme Court Opinions, Michael L. Wells Jun 2007

"Sociological Legitimacy" In Supreme Court Opinions, Michael L. Wells

Washington and Lee Law Review

Analysis of a Supreme Court opinion ordinarily begins from the premise that the opinion is a transparent window into the Court's thinking, such that the reasons offered by the Court are, or ought to be, the reasons that account for the holding. Scholars debate the strength of the Court's reasoning, question or defend the Court's candor, and propose alternative ways of justifying the ruling. This Article takes issue with the transparency premise, on both descriptive and normative grounds. Especially in controversial cases, the Court is at least as much concerned with presenting its holding in a way that will win …

Globalized Medicine: Panacea Or Bitter Pill?, Dinesh Shah Jun 2007

Globalized Medicine: Panacea Or Bitter Pill?, Dinesh Shah

Student Scholarship

Global mindset and openness to change by upper echelon healthcare executives are positioned in this research proposal as prerequisites for competitive responses to a paradigmatic shift in the provision of healthcare worldwide. The proposal addresses a gap in the health care management literature evidenced by a deficit of empirical research pertaining to the relationships among global trade, health and health services and responds to a call for more, and more specific, cross-cultural studies that provide practical implications for international management. Motivated by prior research indicating the pivotal role of top manager's world views and attitudes on institutional responses to globalization, …
