Academic Integrity Among Engineering Undergraduates: Seven Years Of Research By The E3 Team, Cynthia J. Finelli, Trevor S. Harding, Donald D. Carpenter Jun 2007

Academic Integrity Among Engineering Undergraduates: Seven Years Of Research By The E3 Team, Cynthia J. Finelli, Trevor S. Harding, Donald D. Carpenter

Materials Engineering

The E3 Team (Exploring Ethical decision-making in Engineering) is a group of engineering educators and educational researchers who have worked collaboratively since 2000 to understand the underlying causes of academic dishonesty in engineering undergraduate populations. The team was especially motivated by decades of others’ work showing that, when surveyed, engineering students were among those most likely to report frequently cheating. This paper summarizes some of the team’s more important findings from three major studies that surveyed a total of 1300 engineering and humanities undergraduates at eleven institutions. The paper also describes the next phase of the team’s research and …

The Making Of ‘American’: Race And Nation In Neurasthenic Discourse, Brad Campbell Jun 2007

The Making Of ‘American’: Race And Nation In Neurasthenic Discourse, Brad Campbell

English

This paper considers the underexamined racial and nationalistic components of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century neurasthenic discourse to propose that neurasthenia was as much a discourse of modern American identity as it was a discourse of disease. By closely reading the medical and general texts which helped to popularize it, and by scrutinizing the context of its vogue and supposed subsequent decline, this paper shows how neurasthenia was intimately bound up with the era’s politics of race, nationalism and citizenship. Countering traditional understandings of the disease, this study suggests that neurasthenia did not simply anticipate but was pre-eminently preoccupied with …

Review Of Everyday Ideas: Socioliterary Experience Among Antebellum New Englanders By Ronald J. Zboray And Mary Saracino Zboray, Melissa J. Homestead Jun 2007

Review Of Everyday Ideas: Socioliterary Experience Among Antebellum New Englanders By Ronald J. Zboray And Mary Saracino Zboray, Melissa J. Homestead

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Using letters written and diaries kept by 931 New Englanders living during the antebellum era, Ronald and Mary Zboray beneficially unsettle a number of grand narratives about readers and reading in the nineteenth-century United States. Since the influential work of theorist Rolf Engelsing, the turn from the late eighteenth to the early nineteenth century has been understood as the transition point from intensive reading and rereading of a select group of texts (such as the Bible) to extensive reading of many texts without rereading. Literary historians under the sway of Michel Foucault who have sought to chart the “rise of …

Published in 1975 after a wave of anti-Algerian racist attacks in France, this novel is first and foremost a statement of urban space, whose labyrinthian subway lines merge with those of writing, and participate in the drawing of spatiality. But this writing, which disconcerts the documentary expectation of the readers, betrays that expectation : instead of describing the daily life of the emigrant, it seizes his marginalization in order to represent itself, both as a victim who is sacrificed like the hero without name of the novel and as the ridiculous object of a narcissistic and ludic utterance.

Urban Spatial Pattern As Self-Organizing System: An Empirical Evaluation Of Firm Location Decisions In Cleveland–Akron Pmsa, Ohio, Mukesh Kumar, William M. Bowen, Miron Kaufman Jun 2007

Urban Spatial Pattern As Self-Organizing System: An Empirical Evaluation Of Firm Location Decisions In Cleveland–Akron Pmsa, Ohio, Mukesh Kumar, William M. Bowen, Miron Kaufman

Physics Faculty Publications

Economic models of urban spatial patterns have largely ignored complexity as an attribute of urban systems. Complexity theorists on the other hand have not made sufficiently serious and sustained attempts to verify empirically the relevance of complex systems models for urban spatial patterns. This research bridges this gap by simulating the evolution of an urban employment pattern as a self-organizing complex system and seeking its empirical validation. It estimates the model’s parameters by using firm data aggregated to the level of municipalities in Cleveland-Akron Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area in Ohio. The interaction among four parameters, forces of attraction and dispersion …

Social Capital Of Women Measured: Differentials By Family Structures, Zenaida R. Ravanera, Rajulton Fernando Jun 2007

Social Capital Of Women Measured: Differentials By Family Structures, Zenaida R. Ravanera, Rajulton Fernando

PSC Discussion Papers Series

Social capital has often been invoked to explain differences in children’s well-being by family structure; that is, developmental outcome for children in lone parent or step family is not at par with that of children from intact family because parental investments on children may be lower not only in financial and human capital but also in social capital. This proposition has been difficult to examine in greater depth because of lack of conceptual clarity and of data to measure social capital. Using a definition of social capital as the “ability to secure benefits through membership in networks and other social …

No Child Left Behind And The "Highly Qualified Teacher": Perceptions Of Teachers And Parents, Noel J. Raph Jun 2007

No Child Left Behind And The "Highly Qualified Teacher": Perceptions Of Teachers And Parents, Noel J. Raph

Theses and Graduate Projects

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) was signed into law on January 8th, 2002. It appears that in an effort to comply with No Child Left Behind, my school district displaced me from my former secondary teaching position, where I taught students with autism, to an elementary, Emotionally/Behaviorally Disordered (E/BD) position. As an educator and parent, I was not properly informed about the educational act, so I took it upon myself to find out more. This paper will look into NCLB and ask fellow cooperating teachers and parents of students in my program what they know about …

Maslow - Move Aside! A Heuristical Motivation Model For Leaders In Career And Technical Education, Michael Kroth Jun 2007

Maslow - Move Aside! A Heuristical Motivation Model For Leaders In Career And Technical Education, Michael Kroth

Journal of STEM Teacher Education

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is often used as an example of motivational theory in both practitioner and scholarly journals, yet considerable motivational research is being conducted that is not widely known, nor applied in practical settings. This paper summarizes several of those lines of inquiry and suggests applications for career and technical educators. Models seeking to integrate motivational theories have been proposed by scholars, but today there is no generally accepted model that integrates all workplace motivation. Educators in the field need useful rules of thumb for motivating on a day-to-day basis. The heuristic workplace motivation model proposed here, while …

The Impact Of Bullying And Sexual Harassment On Health Outcomes Of Middle School And High School Girls, James Gruber, Susan Fineran Jun 2007

The Impact Of Bullying And Sexual Harassment On Health Outcomes Of Middle School And High School Girls, James Gruber, Susan Fineran

School of Social Work

The impact of bullying and sexual harassment on six health outcomes among middle school girls were compared to these outcomes among high school girls. High school girls experienced more bullying and sexual harassment and poorer health outcomes than their middle school counterparts, but the impact of these experiences was less among high school students. Differences in outcomes may be the result of better support systems and coping mechanisms among high school girls and/or challenging developmental changes during middle school. Sexual orientation, race, and disability had some notable relationships to bullying and sexual harassment experiences as well as health outcomes.

Color-Blind Individualism, Intercountry Adoption And Public Policy, Pamela Anne Quiroz Jun 2007

Color-Blind Individualism, Intercountry Adoption And Public Policy, Pamela Anne Quiroz

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

A prevailing ideology of color-blindness has resulted in privatizing the discourse on adoption. Color-blind individualism, the adoption arena's version of color-blind discourse, argues that race should not matter in adoption; racism can be eradicated through transracial adoption; and individual rights should be exercised without interference of the state. As privatization has increasingly dominated our world and disparities between countries have grown, so too has intercountry adoption. This paper examines the colonial aspects of intercountry adoption and implications for conceptualizing global human rights from our current emphasis on individual rights, as the real issue continues to be which children are desired …

Globalization, Welfare Reform And The Social Economy: Developing An Alternative Approach To Analyzing Social Welfare Systems In The Post-Industrial Era, Vanna Gonzales Jun 2007

Globalization, Welfare Reform And The Social Economy: Developing An Alternative Approach To Analyzing Social Welfare Systems In The Post-Industrial Era, Vanna Gonzales

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Our understanding of the relationship between globalization and contemporary social welfare systems is heavily influenced by three conventional approaches to studying welfare reform: the political economy, moral economy, and mixed economy approaches. In addition to analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of each of these approaches, a central aim of this article is to introduce the social economy approach as an emergent alternative. Drawing from a growing body of work on institutional innovation within the European third sector, I argue that the social economy approach makes a valuable contribution to understanding the role of welfare networks in reconfiguring globalizations' impact on …

Digg.Com And Socially-Driven Authority, Steven Ovadia Jun 2007

Digg.Com And Socially-Driven Authority, Steven Ovadia

Publications and Research

For years, librarians have been able to distill the notion of authority, in its purest form, to two simple questions: “Who said it?” and “Under whose auspices?” The answer to either, or preferably both, of these questions could tell a researcher whether to rely on the information retrieved. Today, however, in the world of online information, the notion of authority is shifting and librarians working in an instructional capacity must understand the shift and determine ways to help students cope with the changes. Searching in today’s socially-driven information era requires a different skill set for researchers looking for authoritative information. …

The Disabling Nature Of The Hiv / Aids Discourse Among Hbcu Students: How Postcolonial Racial Identities And Gender Expectations Influence Hiv Prevention Attitudes And Sexual Risk-Taking, Bruce H. Wade Jun 2007

The Disabling Nature Of The Hiv / Aids Discourse Among Hbcu Students: How Postcolonial Racial Identities And Gender Expectations Influence Hiv Prevention Attitudes And Sexual Risk-Taking, Bruce H. Wade

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This analysis reveals how some African American college students respond to the discourse on HIV / AIDS as a social disability. The methodology includes surveys (n = 217), focus groups and interviews with convenience samples of students attending a consortium of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the U.S. The findings show that the perceived risk of HIV is high in this community, that nearly half of students use condoms inconsistently even though they are well aware of the risks of unprotected sex and their levels of HIV / AIDS knowledge are high. Social stigma, gender role expectations, an …

Spanish/English Codeswitching In Service Encounters: Accommodation To The Customer's Language Choice And Perceived Linguistic Affiliation, Laura Callahan Jun 2007

Spanish/English Codeswitching In Service Encounters: Accommodation To The Customer's Language Choice And Perceived Linguistic Affiliation, Laura Callahan

Modern Languages & Literature

This paper reports on data collected in service encounters in New York and California. Assuming the role of customer, fieldworkers visited businesses and addressed service workers in Spanish. In the majority of 715 encounters, accommodation to the customer's language choice came at the first turn. That is, in the worker's next turn after having been addressed in Spanish, he or she commenced to speak in that language. In a minority of instances the worker maintained English throughout the exchange, even as the customer continued to speak only Spanish. In other encounters, the worker engaged in codeswitching between Spanish and English. …

Business Ethics, Social Responsibility And Aids In Workplaces In Zimbabwe, George Tichaona Dzimiri Jun 2007

Business Ethics, Social Responsibility And Aids In Workplaces In Zimbabwe, George Tichaona Dzimiri

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Understanding AIDS policies and programs small and medium businesses implement to combat the epidemic at workplaces enhances effective collaboration and the harnessing of appropriate resources among interested stakeholders. Knowing the nature of ethics, business principles and human rights elements helps create a framework for reflecting, formulating and developing appropriate and efficacious policies. This interpretive study analyzes the policies and programs businesses apply to fight AIDS among their employees. It also examines the ethics and human rights elements shaping and determining these policies.

The sample of 1066 is comprised of urban small and medium businesses drawn from the Zimbabwe National Chamber …

Genetic Structure Of American Black Bears In The Desert Southwest Of North America, Dave P. Onorato, Eric C. Hellgren, Ronald A. Van Den Bussche, Diana L. Doan-Crider, J Raymond Skiles, Jr.

Publications

Abstract American black bears (Ursus americanus) have recolonized parts of their former range in the Trans-Pecos region of western Texas after a >40-year absence. Assessment of genetic variation, structuring, gene flow, and dispersal among bear populations along the borderlands of Mexico and Texas is important to gain a better understanding of recolonization by large carnivores. We evaluated aspects of genetic diversity and gene flow for 6 sampling areas of black bears in southwestern North America using genotypic data from 7 microsatellite loci. Our results indicated that genetic diversity generally was high in the metapopulation of black bears in …
