The Use Of Verbal And Written Emotional Expression For Empowerment And Healing In Clinical Social Work Practice, Laurie Lynn Dix Schmit
The Use Of Verbal And Written Emotional Expression For Empowerment And Healing In Clinical Social Work Practice, Laurie Lynn Dix Schmit
Masters Theses
Social work practice often demonstrates ambivalence about emotions and emotional expression. Forced by managed care to keep clinical work short-term, and having removed the depth of psychoanalytic and other psychodynamic approaches, social workers have retreated from attending to the emotional life of clients, and now focus mainly in the realm of thoughts and behaviors. By integrating literature from other disciplines with social work, and incorporating contemporary thought on the topic, this paper addresses the importance, challenges and rewards of utilizing emotional expression in clinical social work practice. We find that, by addressing the emotions of our clients, we begin to …

Counselors' Perceptions Of Identity And Attitudinal Differences Between Counselors And Other Mental Health Professionals, Latifey B. Lafleur
Counselors' Perceptions Of Identity And Attitudinal Differences Between Counselors And Other Mental Health Professionals, Latifey B. Lafleur
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A strong, distinctive professional identity is essential for the survival of mental health professions (Fall, Leviov, Jennings, & Eberts, 2000). Although the literature of the various mental health professions offers varying definitions of professional identity, differentiating their services from one another continues to be a problem (Remley & Herlihy, 2005). This uncertainty inhibits uniformity within professions, and causes confusion within the public as to what each mental health field actually does and does not do. Psychologists and social workers have dedicated years of effort to define their professions, providing extensive literature rooted in the history, values, beliefs, and the knowledge …

The Relationship Between Alexithymia, Wellness, And Substance Dependence, Benjamin J. Warner
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the relationship between alexithymia, wellness, and substance dependence. Exploration of the relationship between alexithymia, emotional development, and wellness is largely absent in the literature, as is the use of wellness orientation in substance dependence treatment. This study was constructed from two samples, substance dependent clients in residential treatment in New Orleans, LA, and Austin, TX, and undergraduates from the University of New Orleans and the University of Texas at Austin. The total sample size for the study was n = 200. Each participant was administered the TAS-20 and the WEL. Four groups of n = 50 were …

Adult Learning, Continuing Professional Education, And Constructivism Applied To An Insurance Education Program, Cynthia A. Baroway
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Adult Learning, Continuing Professional Education, and Constructivism Applied to an Insurance Education Program The CPCU Society and the Institutes have been concerned about the decline in CPCU candidates and members. In this project, the author reviewed potential reasons why the numbers have been decreasing and proposed solutions that local CPCU chapters might implement to increase the numbers of new candidates and members. After reviewing literature on adult learning, continuing professional education, and constructivist theory, the author developed a best practices model of a CPCU Insurance Education Program designed to be used by other CPCU chapters to implement their own educational …
