The Interplay Between History And Religious Ambivalence In John Updike's Rabbit Tetralogy, Kathryn Sewell Gillen Jan 2007

The Interplay Between History And Religious Ambivalence In John Updike's Rabbit Tetralogy, Kathryn Sewell Gillen

Honors Theses

The protagonist of John Updike’s Rabbit Tetralogy, Harry “Rabbit” Angstrom, is examined and explained in terms of his ambivalence and spiritual concerns. Rabbit is commonly accepted as a socio-historical symbol - an “American Everyman” - but this explanation alone fails to account for his inclination towards the unknown. Combining Rabbit the symbol with Rabbit the individual allows for a more complete understanding of Updike’s intent to make a statement that is both political and theological. Rabbit’s continual movement between extremes (his ambivalence) is considered foremost. Rabbit’s indecision is a constant throughout the four novels, his most defining characteristic. Once this …

Teaching Parenting Skills In A Methadone Treatment Setting, Randy R. Gainey, Kevin P. Haggerty, Charles B. Fleming, Richard F. Catalano

Sociology & Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Family factors significantly affect children’s risk of substance abuse, delinquency, and other problem behaviors (Arthur, Hawkins, Pollard, Catalano, & Baglioni, 2002). Children of substance abusers represent a particularly high-risk population. Prenatal exposure to addictive substances and the medical complications that may arise are important factors that, from conception, place this population at high risk of drug abuse and other problem behaviors (Griffith, Azuma, & Chasnoff, 1994). As children of substance abusers mature, their lives are characterized by exposure to continued drug and alcohol abuse by family members, recurrent or chronic illnesses, frequent moves, financial troubles, legal conflicts, family disorganization, and …

At Home Among Strangers: The Acculturation Process Of Female African Refugees In The Upper Midwest, Lori J. Dewitt, Judy C. Pearson, Adam W. Tyma, Kelly E. Wolf, David H. Kahl Jr.

Iowa Journal of Communication

This report details an action research project initiated by a team of university researchers with area female African refugees. The goal was to determine the primary issues facing this population and to provide potential solutions. Through focus groups, five problems emerged. Upon identification of these problems, and in conjunction with the refugees and other citizens, the researchers proposed the formation of a community-wide coalition charged with specific objectives to meet the needs of this growing population. Subsequent to the project, an inter-agency coalition, which reports to the city's human rights commission, was established to ameliorate the problems of the refugees.

Teachers’ Conceptions Of Teaching Service Statistics Courses, Sue Gordon, Peter Petocz, Anna Reid Jan 2007

Teachers’ Conceptions Of Teaching Service Statistics Courses, Sue Gordon, Peter Petocz, Anna Reid

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

In this paper, we report on the results of a series of e-mail interviews with statistics educators around the world, focusing on their views of the nature of teaching statistics as a ‘service’ subject. What do they think are the important aspects of statistics to focus on in such servicing teaching? What do they think are the characteristics of good teachers? And how do they go about developing themselves as statistics teachers? We analyse their responses to these and other questions using a phenomenographic approach to identify an outcome space for their conceptions of teaching service statistics. We examine the …

The Health Care Choice Act: The Individual Insurance Market And The Politics Of "Choice", Elizabeth Pendo Jan 2007

The Health Care Choice Act: The Individual Insurance Market And The Politics Of "Choice", Elizabeth Pendo

Articles

The Health Care Choice Act of 2005 (HCCA) aims to reform perceived problems in the individual market, and is touted as part of the solution to the problem of the uninsured. It purports to allow individuals who are not eligible for or cannot afford group coverage to purchase an individual policy in and from any state. If passed, the HCCA would allow health insurers to offer individual policies of insurance from any state without being required to comply with the laws of the insured's own state. Its proponents claim that it would lower the cost of individual health insurance by …

Understanding The Relationship Between The Emotional Competence Inventory - University Edition And The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator In The Admission Of College Students To An Orthopaedics-Based Honors Program, Carrie A. Yocum Jan 2007

Understanding The Relationship Between The Emotional Competence Inventory - University Edition And The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator In The Admission Of College Students To An Orthopaedics-Based Honors Program, Carrie A. Yocum

Dissertations

Problem

The Orthopaedic Scholar Institute (OSI) Team realized its need for a more objective selection and admission process that, as much as possible, quantified the characteristics desired in OSI students rather than relying solely on referral perception, intuition, and an interview, but it did not have a clear method or approach to do so. Administering standardized inventories that highlighted these desired characteristics and aided in the selection and admission process seemed to be an objective approach to obtain more quantifiable data. The problem for my study was, therefore, whether the Myers- Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) alone could measure a student’s …

Disability Rights, Annika Johnson Jan 2007

Disability Rights, Annika Johnson

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Disability rights are often ignored in discussions of human rights. Recently, however, scholars and activists have begun producing a body of literature on disability rights in Russia and the former Soviet bloc states. Much of the literature focuses on children’s rights with an emphasis on the right to inclusive education. The literature addressing adult issues includes articles considering civil society, civil rights, and community integration. Finally, several articles address the intersection of disability rights with gender rights and ethnic minority rights.

Gay And Lesbian Students In Catholic High Schools: A Qualitative Study Of Alumni Narratives, Michael Maher Jr Jan 2007

Gay And Lesbian Students In Catholic High Schools: A Qualitative Study Of Alumni Narratives, Michael Maher Jr

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Catholic Magisterium has made a distinction between homosexual orientation (disordered but not sinful), homosexual activity (sinful, but judged “with prudence”), rights of gay and lesbian people, and the Church’s pastoral responsibilities to gay and lesbian people. Both the Vatican and the American bishops have clearly stated that the topic of homosexuality must be addressed in Catholic education, but the emphases on how it is addressed differ between the Vatican (emphasis on finding causes and cures) and the American bishops (providing pastoral care and inclusion). This article deals with the experiences of gay and lesbian youth in Catholic high schools. …

The Challenge Of Interagency Information Sharing: A Systemic Analysis Of Two Sure Start Children's Centres, Susan Moira Richardson

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This study investigates a problem facing professionals working in public service agencies, in the current policy context of partnership working. This is the question of how to share personal service user information across agency boundaries, so that there is minimal risk of important information being ‘lost down the cracks' between agencies, while at the same time avoiding the risk of breaching confidentiality. This study aims to understand better the day to day difficulties faced by those grappling with this problem. This research contributes to the theoretical understanding of this challenge by proposing a new model of information sharing behaviour and …

Beyond Protective Orders: Interdisciplinary Domestic Violence Clinics Facilitate Social Change, Sara R. Benson Jan 2007

Beyond Protective Orders: Interdisciplinary Domestic Violence Clinics Facilitate Social Change, Sara R. Benson

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that interdisciplinary domestic violence clinics in law schools offer a transformative approach to addressing domestic violence by integrating legal and extra-legal services. These clinics not only provide holistic support to survivors but also empower them to advocate for systemic change. By fostering collaboration among law students, social workers, psychologists, and community organizations, such clinics address the multifaceted needs of survivors while training future lawyers to approach legal issues with a broader societal perspective. The article highlights the potential of these clinics to drive social progress by amplifying the voices of survivors and influencing legal and community responses …

Rethinking Student Press In The 'Marketplace Of Ideas' After Hosty: The Argument For Encouraging Professional Journalistic Practices, Jacob H. Rooksby

Law Faculty Publications

On February 21, 2006, the Supreme Court denied certiorari to Margaret L. Hosty, Jeni S. Porche, and Steven P. Barba, former student editors and staff writers of Illinois’ Governors State University (“GSU”) student newspaper, the Innovator. By denying their petition, the Court effectively ended the trio’s five-year legal battle in which they sought 42 U.S.C. § 1983 relief from Patricia Carter, Dean of Students at GSU. The students had argued that Dean Carter’s actions, which effectively required that they submit prospective issues of the Innovator to her office for administrative approval before going to press, violated their First Amendment …

The Multiple Meanings Of Domestic Violence: A Constructivist Inquiry, Monica Rene' Leisey Jan 2007

The Multiple Meanings Of Domestic Violence: A Constructivist Inquiry, Monica Rene' Leisey

Theses and Dissertations

Spurred by the work of the Battered Women's Movement, domestic violence has been responded to since it emerged as a problem in the 1970s. At first the response was providing places for victims to stay and recover from the violence while also providing opportunities for consciousness raising and empowerment work. As domestic violence became a more recognized problem, policies were created and enacted to end the problem. Through the 1980s and 1990s, changes in federal policies in regards to domestic violence were incorporated. The criminal justice system began incorporating such policies as mandatory arrest and no-drop prosecution policies as well …

Achieving High Performance In Local Government: Linking Government Outcomes With Human Resource Management Practices, Richard F. Huff Jan 2007

Achieving High Performance In Local Government: Linking Government Outcomes With Human Resource Management Practices, Richard F. Huff

Theses and Dissertations

Historically public sector personnel policies and practices have been targets of reform. These reforms consisted of transferring private sector techniques to a public sector perceived to be more bureaucratic and less efficient. Private sector research is replete with evidence of a connection between "superior" human resource management (HRM) practices and the performance outcome of profitability. Public sector outcomes are more difficult to connect directly to management practices. As a result, the focus of public sector reform has become one of improving the processes of management rather than improving the outcomes of government. The linkage between reform and outcome is assumed. This …

Examining The Effectiveness Of Older And Younger Adults' Strategies For Solving Interpersonal And Individual Everyday Problems, Joseph P. Mcfall Jan 2007

Examining The Effectiveness Of Older And Younger Adults' Strategies For Solving Interpersonal And Individual Everyday Problems, Joseph P. Mcfall

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Individual difference characteristics (i.e., age, gender, self-efficacy beliefs, exposure to problems) and contextual characteristics (i.e., problem domain) of the everyday problem-solving process were considered in an examination of individuals' strategy effectiveness. Although prior research has examined problem-solving strategy effectiveness according to independent judges or experts (Allaire & Marsiske, 2002; Blanchard-Fields, Mienaltowski, & Baldi, 2007; Cornelius & Caspi, 1987; Galambos, MacDonald, Naphtali, Cohen, & de Frias, 2005; Marsiske & Willis, 1995), methodological weaknesses in determining the effectiveness of the strategies may have invalidated the findings. A group of seven highly reliable expert raters were recruited to provide effectiveness ratings of strategies …

Participants were leaders who led their organizations during an organizational trauma or who came into programs after the trauma occurred to facilitate recovery.
