Science And Application: A Comparison Of Graduate Training In Counseling And Clinical Psychology, Nupur Jain Jan 2007

Science And Application: A Comparison Of Graduate Training In Counseling And Clinical Psychology, Nupur Jain

Masters Theses

Often times, when considering training and careers in psychology, students have difficulty deciding whether to pursue clinical psychology or counseling psychology as a career. The decision made might be a result of limited or biased information. Additionally, students often fail to make important distinctions between counseling psychology and the professional field of counseling, which has implications for the career path they pursue. The purpose of the current literature review is to provide readers with the range of knowledge and ideas, including contrasting perspectives and viewpoints that have been established in this area.

Students also often fail to make important distinctions …

A Home Of Its Own: The Role Of Poverty Law In Furthering Law Schools' Mission, Marie Failinger Jan 2007

A Home Of Its Own: The Role Of Poverty Law In Furthering Law Schools' Mission, Marie Failinger

Faculty Scholarship

This author argues that poverty advocates who are willing to carefully attend to their law school’s mission and vision, and to give careful thought to how poverty law may play an important role in achieving that vision, may win a more lasting place for poverty law in the curriculum than it has heretofore managed to achieve in most law schools. This article will argue that poverty law can be a key piece in the curriculum of law schools who define their mission, at least in part, as educating lawyers according to one of five paradigms: 1) lawyers as public citizens …

The Diaspora Of Korean Children: A Cross-Cultural Study Of The Educational Crisis In Contemporary South Korea, Young-Ee Cho Jan 2007

The Diaspora Of Korean Children: A Cross-Cultural Study Of The Educational Crisis In Contemporary South Korea, Young-Ee Cho

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The diaspora of Korean children first started after the Korean War in the 1950s. Abandoned by their impoverished mothers and shunned by society, many orphan children were sent abroad for adoption, which was the best, if not the only, available solution at the time. Half a century later, South Korea today is no longer a desperately poor country, and yet an increasing number of young children are still being sent abroad. The exodus of children, termed as the diaspora of Korean children in this study, is an out-of-country solution chosen by both students and parents in response to an educational …

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly - A New Way Of Looking At The Intercountry Adoption Debate, Jena Martin Jan 2007

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly - A New Way Of Looking At The Intercountry Adoption Debate, Jena Martin

Faculty Articles

The two sides of the intercountry adoption debate seem worlds apart. Proponents view international adoption as an effective solution to stop the proliferation of institutionalized and street orphans across the globe. To them, intercountry adoption is a panacea-offering a potential solution to such diverse issues as children orphaned after war and disaster; adults who are unable to conceive; global intolerance; and the limited resources of developing nations. On the other hand, critics of intercountry adoptions view it as modem-day imperialism, allowing dominant, developed cultures to strip away a developing country's most precious resources, its children. Moreover, the view one holds …

Methods: Parental ratings were obtained on 707 adopted Chinese girls, ages 1.50-5.92 years (M = 3.24, SD = 1.26). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), employing robust weighted least squares estimation, was used to evaluate the instrument's seven-factor correlated structure. Profiles of scores were analyzed descriptively for clinical insights.

Results: The CFAs indicated that the fit of Achenbach and Rescorla's (2000 Manual for the ASEBA preschool forms & profiles. Burlington, VT: University of Vermont, Research Centre …

Measuring The Effect Of Intimate Partner Violence On Health-Related Quality Of Life: A Qualitative Focus Group Study, Eve Wittenberg, Manisha Joshi, Kristie A. Thomas, Laura A. Mccloskey Jan 2007

Measuring The Effect Of Intimate Partner Violence On Health-Related Quality Of Life: A Qualitative Focus Group Study, Eve Wittenberg, Manisha Joshi, Kristie A. Thomas, Laura A. Mccloskey

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

Health related quality of life (HRQOL) can be measured by a wide range of instruments, many of which have been designed for specific conditions or uses. "Preference-based" measures assess the value individuals place on health, and are included in economic evaluations of treatments and interventions (such as cost effectiveness analysis). As economic evaluation becomes more common, it is important to assess the applicability of preference-based health related quality of life (HRQOL) measures to public health issues. This study investigated the usefulness of such instruments in the context of intimate partner violence (IPV), a public health concern that that …

A Researcher’S Journey; Participatory Observation Of Women’S Incarceration In Barcelona And Los Angeles, Kara Minnehan Jan 2007

A Researcher’S Journey; Participatory Observation Of Women’S Incarceration In Barcelona And Los Angeles, Kara Minnehan

Whittier Scholars Program

After learning about prisons in the United States, I decided to pursue a comparative analysis between Los Angeles and Barcelona on women in prison. Not surprisingly, my findings in Barcelona helped me ask better questions, but did not reveal the conclusions I had hoped for. My research and volunteer experiences in Barcelona impacted my research approach in Los Angeles. The research I conducted in Barcelona as exploratory, and undoubtedly enhanced the quality in Los Angeles. Similarities and differences are outlined between women’s incarceration in Barcelona and Los Angeles. The methods used in this project were participatory observation and interviews with …

Sociocultural Strain Theory, Amy L. Proctor Jan 2007

Sociocultural Strain Theory, Amy L. Proctor

Theses and Dissertations

In reaction to criticisms of existing strain theories, Agnew (1992) developed General Strain Theory, and in doing so moved toward micro-level conceptions of strain. A return to the cultural concepts found in traditional strain theories may provide a more complete examination of delinquency/criminality, as it would incorporate the influence that culture has on rates of delinquency/criminality among certain groups in American society. This thesis adds to the knowledge base of criminological thought through the creation of a new strain theory. Sociocultural Strain Theory (SST) may provide a better explanation of delinquency/criminality, particularly among racial/ethnic minorities, by taking into consideration cultural …

Drug Use, Mental Health And Encounters With The Legal System In Missoula County, Samantha Renee Cumley Jan 2007

Drug Use, Mental Health And Encounters With The Legal System In Missoula County, Samantha Renee Cumley

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

It has been well documented in the criminological literature that drug use and crime co-occur (Eilliot, Huizinga and Ageton 1985, Goldstein 1985). Data from the Missoula Arrestee Drug Use Monitoring Study were used to investigate the relationships between drug use, treatment experiences, encounters with the legal system and amenability. It was hypothesized that substance use and dependence would predict encounters with the legal system. It was also hypothesized that treatment experiences would predict lower drug and alcohol dependency scores and fewer encounters with the legal system. Additionally, substance dependence and encounters with the legal system were expected to predict high …

Social Capital In Contemporary Society : Decline Or Change, Eleonor Domenichini Jan 2007

Social Capital In Contemporary Society : Decline Or Change, Eleonor Domenichini

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical thesis is going to explore social capital and its relation with trust, civic engagement, and leisure to better understand the complexity of social capital. Some of the concerns advanced by scholars stating that there is a decline of social capital in contemporary society are challenged. Controversies regarding theoretical and methodological applications, and a review of how "special" interests might have been used to promote particular causes affecting intervention and division of resources, are going to be examined. The intent is to show that there are alternative explanations for changes that do not pertain or predict decline. A discussion …
