Invisible Motivation Of Online Adult Learners During Contract Learning, Seung Youn Chyung
Invisible Motivation Of Online Adult Learners During Contract Learning, Seung Youn Chyung
Organizational Performance and Workplace Learning Faculty Publications and Presentations
In a face-to-face classroom, the instructor can easily diagnose students' motivational status by observing their facial expressions and postures, but such cues are absent in an online classroom. Therefore, online instructors often estimate students’ motivational level based on their online behavior such as the number of messages they post, and look for effective strategies to help them actively participate in online dialogues. One such strategy is contract learning which facilitates self-directed behaviors through structuring an agreed learning process. This study reports a contract learning strategy in a graduate-level online class, examining whether a sample of 28 students' motivation could indeed …

Restorative Justice In Post-Disaster Situations: Untapped Potential, Maria R. Volpe
Restorative Justice In Post-Disaster Situations: Untapped Potential, Maria R. Volpe
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
Post-disaster situations can provide a wide range of opportunities for restorative justice. Depending on the nature of the disaster, man-made or natural, the potential of using restorative justice practices to assist in rescue, recovery, and rebuilding efforts can be significant. The challenges, however, can be even more significant.
My interest in examining restorative justice efforts in post-disaster situations grew out of my earlier research on dispute resolution responses to 9/11. In the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, countless questions arose about the role and relevance of dispute resolvers. 9/11 also triggered a wide range of hate crimes, which seemed …

Double Duty: Processing And Exhibiting The Children's Home Society Of Florida Collection As An Archivist And Public Historian, April Anderson-Zorn
Double Duty: Processing And Exhibiting The Children's Home Society Of Florida Collection As An Archivist And Public Historian, April Anderson-Zorn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Children's Home Society of Florida, often referred to as "Florida's Greatest Charity", is the state's oldest non profit welfare agency. Founded in 1902, the society was instrumental in creating and reforming child welfare laws as well as helping countless children in the state of Florida find loving homes. This paper focuses on the archival processing of the Children's Home Society of Florida Collection papers and the creation of a subsequent web exhibit. The role of archivist and public historian is examined to see how each profession works toward a common goal.

A Domestic Right Of Return: Race, Rights, And Residency In New Orleans In The Aftermath Of Hurricane Katrina, Lolita Buckner Inniss
A Domestic Right Of Return: Race, Rights, And Residency In New Orleans In The Aftermath Of Hurricane Katrina, Lolita Buckner Inniss
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
This article begins with a critical account of what occurred in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. This critique serves as the backdrop for a discussion of whether there are international laws or norms that give poor, black Katrina victims the right to return to and resettle in New Orleans. In framing this discussion, this article first briefly explores some of the housing deprivations suffered by Katrina survivors that have led to widespread displacement and dispossession. The article then discusses two of the chief barriers to the return of poor blacks to New Orleans: the broad perception of a race-crime nexus …

Social entrepreneurs and social enterprises are an innovative alternative to provide employment opportunities for needy disadvantaged Singaporeans to mitigate the effects of the widening income gap. Still in its infancy stage, the social entrepreneurship and social enterprise sector faces challenges that are unique to Singapore due to its size, open economy and relative competitiveness.

Guatemala's Femicides And The Ongoing Struggle For Women's Human Rights: Update To Cgrs's 2005 Report Getting Away With Murder, Katharine Ruhl
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
This Article is an update to the report entitled Getting Away With Murder: Guatemala's Failure to Protect Women and Rodi Alvarado's Quest for Safety, published by the Center for Gender & Refugee Studies (CGRS) in November 2005, and by the Hastings Women's Law Journal in its Summer 2006 issue. That report explored the root causes of why Guatemalan women are forced to seek asylum in order to escape violence in their home country, and offered recommendations to the Guatemalan government. In this Article, the author argues that the Guatemalan government has made only limited progress in addressing the problem of …

Gitano Legal Codes: Social Change, Ngo's, And External Legal Systems' Influence On Governance Of Spanish Roma Communities, Jennifer Hu Corriggio
Michigan Journal of Race and Law
Gitanos are the Roma, otherwise known as Gypsies, of Spain that are predominantly concentrated in the southern province of Andaluda. Although the Roma are Europe's largest transnational minority, very little efforts have been made to understand their legal systems. Additionally, due to their long histories of oppression in Europe and internal legal codes that discourage sharing details of their legal systems with outsiders, their legal systems are particularly difficult to understand and for the most part, remain enigmatic and misunderstood. This Article analyzes the historical factors affecting the development of the Gitano legal system by using a horizontal axis metaphor, …

It is clear that Michigan has an economy that is currently in transition from a high-wage manufacturing base to a lower-wage service based economy. This qualitative research explores worker and labor organizer experiences of the conditions surrounding one category of service workers in Washtenaw County – non-unionized grocery store/retail workers. Implications for organizing low-wage workers in Washtenaw County will be highlighted in this paper.

The Role Of Men In Nontraditional Roles: Male Sorority Advisors, Brian Thomas Clarke
Masters Theses
The researcher's experience as a male sorority advisor served as the impetus for the present study, specifically relating to the struggles and difficulties experienced by male chapter advisors in gaining respect, trust, and acceptance from undergraduate and alumnae sorority members.
The purpose of the study was to explore the phenomenon of men as sorority advisors of historically white sororities. Naturalistic methodology (McMillan & Schumacher, 2001) was used to collect the data for the present study. All data were collected through one-on-one qualitative interviews. Participants in the current study were males who have and/or currently serve in an advisory role for …
