Sometimes we experience poetry in human life -- a sense of joy and wonder, connectedness and meaning, and occasionally even transcendence. Sometimes we do not. This is, I believe, a general aspect of the human condition. Such generality notwithstanding, different persons face different obstacles to hearing that poetry. Some obstacles are internal, rooted in an individual's personality. Others are external, deriving from an individual's family, community, or society. This essay explores one distinctive and particularly difficult external obstacle to that poetic joy: lasting social subordination. How does lasting social subordination affect a subordinated person's ability to hear that poetry? What, …

Economic Development Potential Of The Krakow Region, Alicja Boryczko
SPNA Review
Analyzing economic development potential and activities in a region requires identifying factors essential for a successful strategy and analyzing the locale in terms of its resources and relative position within a broader economic environment. In order to examine Krakow’s opportunities and steps already taken, it is necessary to analyze the region’s strengths and weaknesses and relate the findings to academic theories on high technology’s role in economic development and then evaluate the results in the context of Poland. The Krakow Region, located in southern Poland, prides itself as a dynamically developing center of advanced technologies and unmatched business climate. High technology, …
Tax Credits And Health Insurance For The Self-Employed, Adam Buchalski
Tax Credits And Health Insurance For The Self-Employed, Adam Buchalski
SPNA Review
This paper will look at how tax credits can help increase the affordability of health insurance among the self-employed in this country. Two of the problems involving health insurance are having enough and being able to afford it. These issues are especially true if you are part of the self-employed population in this country. Many of the self-employed have dropped health coverage or reduced it in the past few years due to rising costs About 24 million of American small business employees and their families are uninsured according to a study by the Kaiser Family Foundation.
The research shows that …
Recognizing The Paradox: Restructuring An Intentionally Multinational-North American Ngo, Heidi Deroo
Recognizing The Paradox: Restructuring An Intentionally Multinational-North American Ngo, Heidi Deroo
SPNA Review
The Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC) is an International Non-Governmental Organization (INGO) that exists to serve both international and North American constituents. This dual purpose mission is examined in light of Lindenberg and Bryant’s Three Stage Theory and Morgan’s metaphor of organizations as organisms. In “Going Global” (Lindenberg & Bryant, 2001) the Three Stage Theory suggests that all INGOs go through three distinct stages of increasing international influence while “Images of Organization” (Morgan, 1998) suggests that one metaphor for understanding organizations is as organisms that follow no pre-described process but constantly adapt to their surroundings in response to environmental …

Using Selected Scales Of The Mmpi-A To Differentiate Adjudicated From Nonadjudicated Adolescent Females., Brandon M. Robbins
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Juvenile crime has become an increasingly notable problem in society. Historically, a large portion of research on juvenile offenders centers on the psychological diagnosis of conduct disorder. Juveniles diagnosed with Conduct Disorder often possess other high-risk factors that further complicate their problematic behaviors. For example, deviant peer groups reinforce such behaviors as do home environments where parents exhibit antisocial behaviors and substance abuse (Kronenberger & Meyer, 2001 ). Female offenders constitute a small but important part of the population of adolescents who become involved in the legal system, yet they have been the subject of minimal research. Although only 7-27% …
A Comparative Study Of Learning Styles And Job Satisfaction To Medical Specialty Chosen Among Physician Assistant Graduates, Eric H. Vangsnes
A Comparative Study Of Learning Styles And Job Satisfaction To Medical Specialty Chosen Among Physician Assistant Graduates, Eric H. Vangsnes
Dissertations
Since the mid-1980s, a trend has developed whereby Physician Assistants (PAs) are making a transition into medical and surgical specialties (Hooker, 1992). In 1984, 18% of PAs worked in medical and surgical specialties; by 1991, this proportion had risen to 22%; and by 2006, 43% of all PAs worked in medical and surgical specialties ( American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) Census Data 2006 , 2007; Hooker, 1992). One development that may have increased the number of PAs entering specialties was the creation of post-graduate residency programs.
This research examined possible associations between learning style and medical specialty, medical specialty …

Scholarly Art: The Writing Experiences Of Student Affairs Professionals, Wanda L.E. Viento
Dissertations
Special issues of the major student affairs journals recently have reflected on the scholarship of the profession (Blimling, 2001; Roper, 2002). The focus of these recent reflections, as well as prior publications on student affairs scholarship (e.g., Davis & Liddell, 1997; Engstrom, 1999; Hunter, 1986; Hunter & Kuh, 1987), largely has been on mentoring research, describing scholarship trends, critiquing existing patterns, and/or envisioning the shape of future scholarship. While the profession of student affairs acknowledges the critical need to promote scholarship and the dissemination of information, little has actually been done to help people get there. Only a few articles …

The purpose of this study was to examine the symptom burden and severity of symptom distress reported by ICU patients at high-risk for death and to compare patient-rated symptoms and distress for concordance with symptoms reported by a family member. A prospective, correlational design with two data-points was used to study a convenience sample of 80 patients and 53 family members. The Condensed Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale (CMSAS) was used to gain patient/proxy report of symptoms on the first and third day after admission to the ICU. The majority of patients were symptomatic (98%), reporting an average of 10.23 symptoms. …

Using Peer Mediation As A New Alternative For Conflict Resolution: The Effects On Students' Behaviors And Attitudes, Shanika Anicia Testamark
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
During the recent years, countless incidents regarding school violence have captured the attention of many, and have disrupted the lives of numerous young students in the United States. In an effort to rebuild a healthier and safer school climate in America schools, many studies have been conducted on peer mediation programs. Peer mediation programs were developed to educate students on how to resolve conflicts constructively.
The purpose of this study was to examine whether the implementation of a peer mediation program called Project S.T.O.P (Students Teaching Options for Peace) could reduce school violence and students' aggressive behaviors and attitudes. To …
Do Educational Biographies Have A Place In Extension?, Joey Peutz, Michael Kroth
Do Educational Biographies Have A Place In Extension?, Joey Peutz, Michael Kroth
Journal of Extension
Educational biographies and narratives have been the focus of increasing attention in adult education arenas (Rossiter, 2002). As this adult education method continues to grow in popularity, the question should be asked if educational biographies have a place in Extension. There is evidence that the exercise of completing educational biographies assists adults in their learning. Extension educators can apply the process from two perspectives: 1) Personally writing an educational biography and reflecting on their learning experiences and 2) Encourage program participants to complete the process themselves.
Early-Onset Alcohol Use Among Native American Youth: Examining Female Caretaker Influence, Melissa L. Walls, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Kurt D. Johnson
Early-Onset Alcohol Use Among Native American Youth: Examining Female Caretaker Influence, Melissa L. Walls, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Kurt D. Johnson
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This article investigates the influence of female caretaker substance use on early-onset youth drinking among Native American families in the Northern Midwest. Data include 603 Native American families, with reports from female caretakers and youths aged 10–13 years. Two potential caretaker influences are taken into account: adolescent modeling of caretaker behaviors and the effects of caretaker substance abuse on parenting. Results of bivariate and path analysis provide support for the influence of caretaker substance use on adolescent drinking from both perspectives; these effects vary, however, depending on the type or degree of adult substance use, or both.
Postpartum Depression Post Andrea Yates, Patricia R. Luca
Postpartum Depression Post Andrea Yates, Patricia R. Luca
Senior Honors Theses
Scientific research does not occur without influence from media and culture. Certainly, changes in funding decisions and publishing patterns are not immune to the influence of a single fantastic case. Andrea Yates' gruesome murder of her five children is just that type of case. The present paper focuses on the influence of that case on postpartum depression research in terms of both content and volume. The explosion of research on postpartum depression since Yates murdered her children is inarguable, the content of that research was organized into three areas: application of postpartum depression, mother-child relationship, and related constructs and discussed …

Student Responses To Criteria Referenced Self-Assessment, Heidi Andrade, Ying Du
Student Responses To Criteria Referenced Self-Assessment, Heidi Andrade, Ying Du
Educational Policy & Leadership Faculty Scholarship
This paper reports on a study of undergraduate students' experiences with criteria-referenced self-assessment. Fourteen students who had taken a course involving self-assessment were interviewed in focus groups segregated by gender. The findings suggest that students had positive attitudes toward self-assessment after extended practice; felt they can effectively self-assess when they know their teacher's expectations; claimed to use self-assessment to check their work and guide revision; and believed the benefits of self-assessment include improvements in grades, quality of work, motivation and learning. There were indications that some students sensed a tension between their own standards for good work and some of …

Social Fora: Representing Resistance And Alternatives? Critique And Alternative Interpretation From A Feminist Perspective, Magdalena Freudenschuss
Social Fora: Representing Resistance And Alternatives? Critique And Alternative Interpretation From A Feminist Perspective, Magdalena Freudenschuss
Journal of International Women's Studies
The World Social Forum is only one in the worldwide process of social fora, which mark a new phase in the era of globalisation. This critical form of globalisation from below challenges neoliberal hegemony and sets up a space to develop alternatives symbolised by the Forum’s motto, “Another World is Possible.” Collectively, the fora make up a part of the forces of global resistance, but in a more concrete way, opinions on resulting strategies and aims diverge concerning the foras’ character and function. At the same time, criticism is formulated inside the fora, leading to heavy debates. Among these critiques …

The Silences Between: Are Lesbians Irrelevant? World Social Forum, Mumbai, India, 16-21 January, Susan Hawthorne
Journal of International Women's Studies
In this essay, I reflect on my experience at the Mumbai World Social Forum in 2004. I begin with a discussion of silence as methodology in research with, by and about lesbians. I examine the silence around lesbian politics as well as the silences between lesbian activists and those they encounter in discussion, political activism and research settings. I explore some of the differences and similarities between Australia and India both within the mainstream culture and in the freedoms or otherwise of lesbians. I then go on to describe the workshop I organized for the Mumbai World Social Forum on …
Deconstructing ‘Gender And Development’ For ‘Identities Of Women’, Shweta Singh
Deconstructing ‘Gender And Development’ For ‘Identities Of Women’, Shweta Singh
Women's Studies & Gender Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works
In this article, the gender and development paradigm is critically reviewed and an alternative framework of research –identities of women– is proposed. This article contends that the gender and development paradigm is primarily guided by the tenets of Western feminisms and economic development. The article also highlights other limitations of the paradigm, including its preoccupation with male–female inequalities, macro generalisations and symbolic representation of women and a limited inclusion of local contexts. The identities of women framework proposes to address the limitations of the gender and development paradigm by studying women's conception of their environment and women's understanding …
