A New Look At Egypt’S Brain Drain Within Auc, Iman Dawood
A New Look At Egypt’S Brain Drain Within Auc, Iman Dawood
The Undergraduate Research Journal
The emigration of highly skilled and educated Egyptian citizens has been on-going for decades and has had a relatively negative effect on Egypt’s development. Drawing on 100 Egyptian undergraduate students—both male and female – in order to gauge a rough estimate of the number of AUC students who plan on traveling and living abroad as well as their reasons for doing so. The research showed that 90% of students wished to live abroad. In addition, interviews were held with Egyptian professors to discuss potential reasons for Egyptian nationals to remain within their country as well as the ways in which …

Programs and initiatives funded by the government have demonstrated an inability to deal with the growing demand for education. Due to a sheer lack of financial resources, primary schools have fallen back both on supplying basic necessities, such as books and stationary, and on delivering a quality of education on par with other countries in the region. Despite its shortcomings, the government remains the single largest financial contributor to primary school education in Egypt. The contribution of the private sector to the funding of the education system has, over the past five years, stagnated to a meager 6.9% of total …

Youth Perspectives On Citizenship And Civic Engagement In Egypt, Nahla Mahgoub, Reham Morsi
The Undergraduate Research Journal
During the past two decades, Egypt has witnessed an enormous change in the way political affairs are handled. For this reason, concepts of citizenship and nationality have changed in the minds of all peoples, creating a need to come up with specific definitions of citizenship that provides a clear framework in which the government and its people can interact. Egypt has a special demographic distribution of the youth bulge-where the youth make up the majority of the population. For this reason it is important to asses how this youth bulge perceive the concepts of citizenship, nationality and civic engagement. This …

Illness Stories: From Recognizing The Significance In Care To Planning My Own Storied Practice, Jane Lachance
Illness Stories: From Recognizing The Significance In Care To Planning My Own Storied Practice, Jane Lachance
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
In this paper, stories of illness are identified as belonging to a specific genre of story that represents an ill person's interpretation of experience and hence the meaning(s) of illness. The ill person is recognized as member of a family embedded in a social setting with cultural mores that contribute to experience and meanings. The meaning of illness is significant because it affects the care of illness. This paper focuses on chronic illness, an illness without cure that is managed over a lifetime and is characterized by remission and exacerbation of symptoms. Our current bio-medical health care system reframes the …
Identifying Methods Nurse Managers Can Implement To Foster A Supportive Environment For Staff Where Disruptive Behavior Exists, Kathleen Leavitt
Identifying Methods Nurse Managers Can Implement To Foster A Supportive Environment For Staff Where Disruptive Behavior Exists, Kathleen Leavitt
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
We can all imagine the ideal work environment, where you are respected, empowered, and provided with the resources to perform to the best of your ability everyday. Your skills would be acknowledged and the challenging work that is accomplished each day would be appreciated by peers, team members, and managers. However, in my work environment, an operating room, a phenomenon called "disruptive behavior" often interrupts the ability of achieving this desired state. Initially I was focused on this behavior being displayed by physicians but was awakened to the fact that they are not the only offenders and that many caregivers …

The Birds Of Nebraska, Revised Edition 2007, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
Persons living in Nebraska often feel that they are living in a cultural wasteland; its citizenry preoccupied with violent sports such as hunting and football. Yet many are unaware that they are actually residing in one of the prime locations in the entire world for observing and enjoying some of the most aesthetically appealing of all the world's biological attractions. The area around Kingsley Dam and Lake McConaughy, for example, is known to have attracted more than 300 bird species, including 104 breeders (plus 17 probable breeders) making it the third-most species-rich bird location in the entire U.S.A. (after Laguna …

A Guide To The Natural History Of The Central Platte Valley Of Nebraska, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
This book has been written in the hope that visitors to the Platte Valley may gain a greater appreciation for it through learning some of its animals and plants in addition to the Platte Valley's star spring attraction, its sandhill cranes. Besides the cranes, we have a world-class migration of geese and ducks, a slightly later migration of shorebirds, including what is probably the buff-breasted sandpiper's most important spring staging area between its South American wintering grounds and its arctic breeding grounds. Nebraska also has what may be the largest surviving population of greater prairie-chickens of any state, and an …

Continuity Of Care : Literature Review And Implications, Mohammed Alazri, Philip Heywood, Richard D. Leese, Brenda
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Continuity of care is widely regarded as a core value of primary care. The objective of this article is to explore the literature about the concept of continuity of care focusing on factors that influence continuity; advantages and disadvantages of continuity and the effect of continuity on outcomes, hence on the quality of care. Electronic databases and other websites were searched for relevant literature. The results of this review showed that continuity of care is influenced by demographic factors, factors related to patients and healthcare professionals, patient-healthcare professional relationship, inter-professional factors, role of receptionists and organisational factors. Several advantages were …

From Hiv Abandonment To Adoption Case Study Of New Life Home For Abandoned Babies, Kenya, Abdul Majid Wangai Jr, Maryam Wangai, Mary Beckenham, Clive
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objective: The number of orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) worldwide has increased as a result of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) pandemic. New Life Home (NLH) specialises in the care of infants who have been orphaned or abandoned, often because of their exposure to HIV and places them for adoption. This paper documents the lessons learnt from the Home’s first 8.5 years of existence. Methods: This retrospective study analyses the pattern of the 490 infants admitted at NLH. The characteristics of the infants’ stay are analysed: bio-data, weight, HIV exposure, referring organisation/agent and outcome. This study ceased to follow infants …
Health Consequences Of Iodine Deficiency, Umesh Kapil
Health Consequences Of Iodine Deficiency, Umesh Kapil
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) are one of the biggest worldwide public health problem of today. Their effect is hidden and profoundly affects the quality of human life. Iodine deficiency occurs when the soil is poor in iodine, causing a low concentration in food products and insufficient iodine intake in the population. When iodine requirements are not met, the thyroid may no longer be able to synthesize sufficient amounts of thyroid hormone. The resulting low-level of thyroid hormones in the blood is the principal factor responsible for the series of functional and developmental abnormalities, collectively referred to as IDD. Iodine deficiency …

Cerebrospinal Fluid Involvement In A Case Of Visceral Leishmaniasis Associated With Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis, Mahmoud Fathalla, Javad Hashim, Hussein Wali, Yasser
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) implies a benign generalized histiocytic proliferate with erythrophagocytosis and it includes familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and secondary hemophgocytosis. Spinal fluid changes like mild to moderate pleocytosis (most of the cells are lymphocytes and macrophages) and sometimes hemophagocytosis are seen in primary HLH but are not reported in secondary HLH. Here we report a case of a previously healthy 10 months old male infant who was diagnosed as familial HLH with evidence of CSF hemophagocytosis. He was started on the HLH 2004 treatment protocol with no improvement. A second bone marrow aspiration revealed leshmania donovani antibodies and he was …

Seasonal Appearance And Monitoring Of Invasive Species In The Great Bay Estuarine System, Larry G. Harris, Jennifer A. Dijkstra
PREP Reports & Publications
The University of New Hampshire Zoology Department reports on a study designed to synthesize existing data on invasive species in the estuary and the surrounding area, compare succession between two panel studies (1979 to 1982 and 2003 to 2006), seasonally monitor invasive species in the Great Bay Estuary, and identify predators of invasive species. Researchers identified species most likely to invade the Great Bay Estuary, analyzed succession between two long-term panel studies separated by approximately 25 years, collected presence/absence and abundance data of invasive species at four sites within the Great Bay Estuarine System and identified potential predators of invasive …
