From Exception To Norm: Deaccessioning In Late Twentieth Century American Art Museums, Julianna Shubinski Jan 2007

From Exception To Norm: Deaccessioning In Late Twentieth Century American Art Museums, Julianna Shubinski

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Throughout their history in America, museums, including those of art, have adapted according to their environment. One result of this adaptability is that objects in art museum collections are not as permanent as those outside the museum field tend to believe. As scholarship, funding, and audiences change, objects which at one time were considered pertinent to a museum collection may be deaccessioned, the term used for when a museum removes an accessioned object from its permanent collection. Yet deaccessioning in America tended to remain the exception, rather than the rule, until the last three decades of the twentieth century. How …

Geophysical And Geological Investigation Of Neotectonic Deformation Along The Caborn And Hovey Lake Faults, Wabash Valley Fault System, Central United States, James Whitt Jan 2007

Geophysical And Geological Investigation Of Neotectonic Deformation Along The Caborn And Hovey Lake Faults, Wabash Valley Fault System, Central United States, James Whitt

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Seismic reflection (P- and SH-wave), ground-penetrating radar, correlative drilling, and age dating data provide evidence of neotectonic deformation along the Caborn (CF) and Hovey Lake (HLF) faults, in the Wabash Valley fault system (WVFS). The WVFS is a series of high-angle normal faults located primarily in southern Indiana and Illinois. Since their formation, these faults have likely been transpressionally reactivated in the contemporary E-W-oriented compressive stress state. The WVFS has experienced large prehistoric earthquakes, but only moderate historic and contemporary seismicity; therefore, the seismic potential in this region is poorly defined. The bedrock expressions of the CF and HLF were …

Catalytic Growth Of Structured Carbon Via The Decomposition Of Halogenated Reactants Over Supported Nickel, Laxmi Deepshika Cherukuri Jan 2007

Catalytic Growth Of Structured Carbon Via The Decomposition Of Halogenated Reactants Over Supported Nickel, Laxmi Deepshika Cherukuri

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The synthesis of highly ordered carbonaceous materials, including carbon nanofibers, has been the subject of a disparate and burgeoning literature over the past decade. Growth of carbon nanotubes via an atypical catalytic route, the decomposition of halogenated reactants as chlorobenzene (CB) over 10% (w/w) Ni/SiO2 is investigated. The C (carbon) yield and structural order are a function of reaction time and temperature. Greater degree of structural order and C yield is observed from CB relative to benzene, suggesting Cl/catalyst interaction(s) and metal site restructuring. Evaluation of the effect of H2 on C growth from CB reveals that C yield is …

The Function Of Socs Genes In Drosophila Development And Signaling Pathways, Qian Guo Jan 2007

The Function Of Socs Genes In Drosophila Development And Signaling Pathways, Qian Guo

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The duration and intensity of the JAK/stat signaling must be tightly regulated to prevent excessive transcriptional response and to reset the pathway to receive additional signals. Socs are the largest class of these regulators in mammals. Eight Socs genes have been found in mammals. CIS, and SOCS1-3, the canonical Socs, are transcriptionally activated by and down-regulate the JAK signaling. Socs4-7, the non-canonical Socs, are less studied and their relationship with the JAK/STAT pathway has not been well established. The Drosophila genome encodes three non-canonical Socs homologues, Socs16D, Socs36E, and Socs44A. Expression of Socs36E is controlled by the JAK pathway and …

Analytical Methods For Transport Equations In Similarity Form, Abhishek Tiwari Jan 2007

Analytical Methods For Transport Equations In Similarity Form, Abhishek Tiwari

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

We present a novel approach for deriving analytical solutions to transport equations expressedin similarity variables. We apply a fixed-point iteration procedure to these transformedequations by formally solving for the highest derivative term and then integrating to obtainan expression for the solution in terms of a previous estimate. We are able to analyticallyobtain the Lipschitz condition for this iteration procedure and, from this (via requirements forconvergence given by the contraction mapping principle), deduce a range of values for the outerlimit of the solution domain, for which the fixed-point iteration is guaranteed to converge.

Rlinks: A Mechanism For Navigating To Related Files, Naveen Akarapu Jan 2007

Rlinks: A Mechanism For Navigating To Related Files, Naveen Akarapu

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This thesis introduces Relative links or rlinks, which are directed labeled links from one file to another in a file system. Rlinks provide a clean way to build and share related-file information without creating additional files and directories. Rlinks form overlay graphs between files of a file system, thus providing useful alternate views of the file system. This thesis implements rlinks for the Linux kernel and modifies the storage structure of the Ext2 file system to store the rlinks.

Relationship Between Ethylene And Seed Dormancy Release In Echinacea Species, Laura Anne Wood Jan 2007

Relationship Between Ethylene And Seed Dormancy Release In Echinacea Species, Laura Anne Wood

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Inconsistent seed germination poses a problem for efficient seedling production of Echinacea species. Evidence suggests that ethylene can be effective for improving germination in Echinacea species. The objectives of this research were: to develop an ethylene pre-germination treatment that enhances germination in Echinacea species that is retained following drying and storage, and to determine if the ethylene effect on enhanced germination was an important mode of action for dormancy release. Four species of Echinacea (E. purpurea, E. tennesseensis, E. angustifolia and E. simulata) treated with 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) or ethephon resulted in faster and generally higher germination. Pre-treatment of seeds …

Numerical Simulation Of Two Flow Control Approaches For Low Reynolds Number Applications, Daniel A. Reasor Jr. Jan 2007

Numerical Simulation Of Two Flow Control Approaches For Low Reynolds Number Applications, Daniel A. Reasor Jr.

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Current research in experimental and computational fluid dynamics is focused in the area of flow control. Flow control devices are usually classified as either passive or active. Plasma actuators are active flow control devices that require input from an external power source. Current efforts have modeled the effects of plasma actuators as a body force near the electrode. The research presented herein focuses on modeling the fluid-plasma interaction seen in dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuators as a body force vector in the region above the embedded electrode using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This body force is modeled as the product …

Semi-Empirical Method For Designing Excavation Support Systems Based On Deformation Control, David G. Zapata-Medina Jan 2007

Semi-Empirical Method For Designing Excavation Support Systems Based On Deformation Control, David G. Zapata-Medina

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Due to space limitations in urban areas, underground construction has become a common practice worldwide. When using deep excavations, excessive lateral movements are a major concern because they can lead to significant displacements and rotations in adjacent structures. Therefore, accurate predictions of lateral wall deflections and surface settlements are important design criteria in the analysis and design of excavation support systems. This research shows that the current design methods, based on plane strain analyses, are not accurate for designing excavation support systems and that fully three-dimensional (3D) analyses including wall installation effects are needed. A complete 3D finite element simulation …

Comparative Ecology Of The Golden-Winged Warbler And Blue-Winged Warbler On Reclaimed Mines In Southeastern Kentucky, Laura L. Patton

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The golden-winged warbler (Vermivora chrysoptera) inhabits lower elevations on reclaimed surface mines in Kentucky, an indication of recent range expansion in this imperiled species. In 2004 and 2005, I compared breeding habitat between the golden-winged warbler and blue-winged warbler (V. pinus) in eastern Kentucky at landscape, territory, and nest site scales. Distance to forest edge averaged 38 m for the golden-winged warbler and 33 m for the blue-winged warbler. Maximum territory size averaged 1.5 ha for the golden-winged warbler and 2.1 ha for the blue-winged warbler. The golden-winged warbler occurred at higher elevations (up to 912 m) than the blue-winged …

Finite Element Modeling Of An Inflatable Wing, Johnathan Rowe Jan 2007

Finite Element Modeling Of An Inflatable Wing, Johnathan Rowe

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Inflatable wings provide an innovative solution to unmanned aerial vehicles requiring small packed volumes, such as those used for military reconnaissance or extra-planetary exploration. There is desire to implement warping actuation forces to change the shape of the wing during flight to allow for greater control of the aircraft. In order to quickly and effectively analyze the effects of wing warping strategies on an inflatable wing, a finite element model is desired. Development of a finite element model which includes woven fabric material properties, internal pressure loading, and external wing loading is presented. Testing was performed to determine material properties …

Characterization Of Polyphenol Oxidase And Antioxidants From Pawpaw (Asimina Tribola) Fruit, Caodi Fang Jan 2007

Characterization Of Polyphenol Oxidase And Antioxidants From Pawpaw (Asimina Tribola) Fruit, Caodi Fang

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The latest generation of fighter aircraft utilizes a 270Vdc power system [1]. Such high voltage DC power systems are difficult to protect with conventional circuit breakers because the current does not automatically go to zero twice per cycle during a fault like it does in an AC power system and thus arcing of the contacts is a problem. Solid state power controllers (SSPCs) are the solid state equivalent of a circuit breaker that do not arc and which can respond more rapidly to a fault than a mechanical breaker [2]. Present SSPCs are limited to lower voltages and currents by …

The Process Of Using Superplastic Forming To Create Medical Components, Daniel Lee Thomas

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

In the present work superplastic forming (SPF) is used as part of a process to create medical implants out of titanium. SPF is a forming process which offers many advantages over conventional forming processes. It allows for greater complexity in shape as well as the ability to work with difficult to form metals such as titanium which is a key metal in the biomedical field. SPF has been used extensively in the aerospace and automobile industry, however in recent years it has been shown to be a viable means in creating medical implants. The current process involves manipulating CT scans …

The Use Of Selective Annealing For Superplastic Forming Of Mg Az31 Alloy, Michael Christopher Cusick Jan 2007

The Use Of Selective Annealing For Superplastic Forming Of Mg Az31 Alloy, Michael Christopher Cusick

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

A recent study on the Post-Formed properties of Superplastically Formed Magnesium AZ31B has shown that the heating time prior to testing has a major effect on the Post Forming properties of the superplastically material. To this point, there has been very little examination into the effect of pre-heating or annealing on superplastic forming (SPF) properties. In this work, the effects of annealing prior to the SPF of Mg AZ31 alloy were examined. Both high temperature SPF tensile and bulge specimens were formed after annealing. Multiple annealing temperatures were examined to produce specimens with grain sizes ranging from 8 andamp;igrave;m to …

A hybrid model integrating predictive capabilities of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and optimization feature of Genetic Algorithm (GA) is developed for the purpose of inverse modeling. The proposed approach is applied to Superplastic forming of materials to predict the material properties which characterize the performance of a material. The study is carried out on two problems. For the first problem, ANN is trained to predict the strain rate sensitivity index m given the temperature and the strain rate. The performance of different gradient search methods used in training the ANN model is demonstrated. Similar approach is used for the second …

The Role Of Shearing In The Transmission Of Diplodia Pinea In Scots Pine Christmas Trees In Kentucky, Amy Bateman Jan 2007

The Role Of Shearing In The Transmission Of Diplodia Pinea In Scots Pine Christmas Trees In Kentucky, Amy Bateman

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Diplodia tip blight is an important disease of pines, especially Scots pine Christmas trees in Kentucky. The hypothesis for my thesis work was that D. pinea could be acquired and transmitted on the tools during annual shearing of the Christmas trees. Samples taken from tools after shearing on two different Christmas tree farms in Kentucky in 2005 and 2006 yielded D. pinea colony forming units, but in very low quantities; typically less than 10 CFUs per collection. Diplodia-associated dieback from the sheared tips was never found in the field, suggesting that transmission and subsequent infections were not occurring via these …

The Development Of An Engine Lubricant Containing Soybean Oil, Stephanie Mccoy Jan 2007

The Development Of An Engine Lubricant Containing Soybean Oil, Stephanie Mccoy

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The major downfalls of vegetable oils, namely soybean oil in this research, are very detrimental to engine lubricant performance. A unique - out of the box- additive package is needed to compensate for the lubricant deficiencies. This research searched for unique additive solutions to the problems of oxidation and heat stability, low temperature pumpability, and fluid corrosiveness. The additive solutions were then tested in preliminary engine tests. In this research, several formulations were developed that passed the main engine oil low temperature test, the mini rotary viscometer. The lubricants met the passing viscosity requirements of 60,000 centipoise and exhibited no …

Tracing The Origin Of The Recent Rise In Neuropathogenic Ehv-1, Kathryn Laura Smith

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Equine herpesvirus type-1(EHV-1) is a complex virus known for inducing various forms of disease in horses. In recent years, the number of cases of neurological disease caused by this virus has increased. While there are a number of possible sources for this recent surge, this project set out to determine if a genotypic shift in the latent population of the virus in favor of the neuropathogenic form of EHV-1 is the basis for the recent increase in frequency of EHV-1 neurologic disease. To ascertain if such a shift has in fact occurred, 450 EHV-1 isolates were obtained from fetal tissues …

Optimization Of A Dual-Mode Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor, Prasanth Bathae Kumaresh Jan 2007

Optimization Of A Dual-Mode Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor, Prasanth Bathae Kumaresh

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Surface plasmon waves are TM polarized charge density waves that propagate at the interface of two media with real dielectric constants of opposite sign (i.e. liquid dielectric and certain metals). Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors use these waves to detect refractive index changes adjacent to the metal layer. Refractive index changes arise from the binding of an analyte (e.g. a target molecule, protein, or bacterium) to the functionalized metal layer or from interfering effects such as changes in solution index. Standard, single channel SPR sensors cannot differentiate these two effects as their design allows only one mode to be coupled. …

Numerical Investigation And Parallel Computing For Thermal Transport Mechanism During Nanomachining, Ravi R. Kumar Jan 2007

Numerical Investigation And Parallel Computing For Thermal Transport Mechanism During Nanomachining, Ravi R. Kumar

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Nano-scale machining, or Nanomachining is a hybrid process in which the total thermal energy necessary to remove atoms from a work-piece surface is applied from external sources. In the current study, the total thermal energy necessary to remove atoms from a work-piece surface is applied from two sources: (1) localized energy from a laser beam focused to a micron-scale spot to preheat the work-piece, and (2) a high-precision electron-beam emitted from the tips of carbon nano-tubes to remove material via evaporation/sublimation. Macro-to-nano scale heat transfer models are discussed for understanding their capability to capture and its application to predict the …

Softwood cuttings of Euonymus alatus and the cultivar Rudy Haag, a nearly seedless cultivar, were taken in Kentucky on two cutting dates. E. alatus Rudy Haag cuttings taken in mid-May, untreated or treated with 1000 - 3000 ppm IBA, produced many roots on a high percentage of cuttings. Post-rooting shoot growth was reduced for the species with cuttings taken in June. Rudy Haag produced new growth on cuttings taken in May with no IBA treatment. Transplanting resulted in a decrease in new growth. Liner plants of E. alatus Compactus and Rudy Haag were planted into 1 and 3 gallon containers …

Faster Dynamic Programming For Markov Decision Processes, Peng Dai Jan 2007

Faster Dynamic Programming For Markov Decision Processes, Peng Dai

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Markov decision processes (MDPs) are a general framework used by Artificial Intelligence (AI) researchers to model decision theoretic planning problems. Solving real world MDPs has been a major and challenging research topic in the AI literature. This paper discusses two main groups of approaches in solving MDPs. The first group of approaches combines the strategies of heuristic search and dynamic programming to expedite the convergence process. The second makes use of graphical structures in MDPs to decrease the effort of classic dynamic programming algorithms. Two new algorithms proposed by the author, MBLAO* and TVI, are described here.

A Camera-Based Energy Relaxation Framework To Minimize Color Artifacts In A Projected Display, Nathaniel Sanders Jan 2007

A Camera-Based Energy Relaxation Framework To Minimize Color Artifacts In A Projected Display, Nathaniel Sanders

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

We introduce a technique to automatically correct color inconsistencies in a display composed of one or more digital light projectors (DLP). The method is agnostic to the source of error and can detect and address color problems from a number of sources. Examples include inter- and intra-projector color differences, display surface markings, and environmental lighting differences on the display. In contrast to methods that discover and map all colors into the greatest common color space, we minimize local color discontinuities to create color seamlessness while remaining tolerant to significant color error. The technique makes use of a commodity camera and …
