Exploration Of Kani Tribal Botanical Knowledge In Agasthiayamalai Biosphere Reserve - South India, John De Britto, R. Mahesh
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Since traditional herbal remedies are based on ancestral knowledge and empiric experiences of tribes, an ethnomedicinal survey was undertaken to collect information appeared to be useful for the research on medicinal plants of the Agasthiayamalai Biosphere Reserve in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu during October 2005- December 2006. The ancestral traditional knowledge of Kani people including reliable hakims, physicians in five settlements (Tirunelveli zones) the native plants used for the preparation of drugs and methods of their administration along with doses were recorded, collected through questionnaire as well as informal personal interviews during field trips. The exploration of ethno medicinal …

Numerous studies have examined the association between the surrounding neighborhood environment and physical activity levels in adolescents. Many of these studies use a road network buffer or Euclidean distance buffer around an adolescent's home to represent the appropriate geographic area for study (i.e., neighborhood). However, little empirical research has examined the appropriate buffer size to use when defining this area and there is little consistency across published research as to the buffer size used. In this study, 909 12th grade adolescent girls of diverse racial and geographic backgrounds were asked to report their perceptions of an easy walking distance and …

Students In Dietetics Lead Program For High School Students In Batesville, Jennifer Farish
University of Mississippi News
OXFORD, Miss. - Students studying dietetics at the University of Mississippi got hands-on experience and influenced the lives of some high school students in late November thanks to a $7,500 grant from the Mississippi chapter of the March of Dimes. The "New Futures" program, administered at South Panola High School in Batesville, focused on educating students about the dangers of poor nutrition during pregnancy, the risk factors of premature labor and the importance of learning how to set goals to continue their education, said Teresa Carithers, chair of the Department of Family and Consumer Science and principal investigator for the …

The Changing Faces Of New Hampshire: Recent Demographic Trends In The Granite State, Kenneth M. Johnson
Carsey Publications
New Hampshire, with a total population of 1.3 million, gained 79,000 residents between 2000 and 2006. Most of this growth (51,000 residents) came from migration. The migration also brought economic gains: New Hampshire gained at least $1.4 billion in income from migration between 2001 and 2005, and households moving in earned nearly $9,000 more than those leaving.

Energy Based Split Vector Quantizer Employing Signal Representation In Multiple Transform Domains., Wasfy Mikhael, Venkatesh Krishnan
UCF Patents
This invention relates to representation of one and multidimensional signal vectors in nonorgothonal domains and design of Vector Quantizers that can be chosen among these representations. There is presented a Vector Quantization technique in multiple nonorthogonal domains for both waveform and model based signal characterization. An iterative codebook accuracy enhancement algorithm, applicable to both waveform and model based Vector Quantization in multiple nonorthogonal domains, which yields further improvement in signal coding performance, is disclosed. Further, Vector Quantization in in nonorthogonal domains is applied to speech and exhibits clear performance improvements of reconstruction quality for the same bit rate compared to …

Polarimetry Of Three-Dimensional Optical Fields., Aristide Dogariu, Jeremy Ellis
UCF Patents
The apparatus, system and method of the present invention provide a three-dimensional polarimeter probe having a coupler for coupling three components of an electromagnetic field that fluctuates in three-dimensions and an emitter for re-emitting a radiation corresponding to said three components. The radiation includes a polarized and an unpolarized component of said electromagnetic field and is used to determine the elements of a field-field correlation martix. In an embodiment, the system includes a detector located a distance from said probe for sensing said re-emitted radiation from said probe and a processor for determining a polarized and an unpolarized component of …

Common And Distinct Mechanisms Of Different Redox-Active Carcinogens Involved In The Transformation Of Mouse Jb6p+ Cells, Sun Yang, Bobbye J. Misner, Rita Chiu, Frank L. Meyskens Jr.
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
We transformed JB6P+ cells with prolonged intermittent low-dose UVB radiation or prolonged exposure to low-dose H2O2 or CdCl2. Stable transformation was confirmed by an anchorage-independence assay. The JB6P+ transformants formed more colonies (∼six folds) in soft agar as compared to their JB6P+ parent cells and were associated with increased intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Activating protein-1 (AP-1) is a family of transcription factors that are rapidly activated by elevated intracellular ROS levels, and their composition is important in the process of cellular transformation and/or tumor progression. To investigate if carcinogenesis induced by distinct carcinogens was via similar molecular mechanisms …

As the ear has dual functions for audition and balance, the eye has a dual role in detecting light for a wide range of behavioral and physiological functions separate from sight. These responses are driven primarily by stimulation of photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (pRGCs) that are most sensitive to short-wavelength ( approximately 480 nm) blue light and remain functional in the absence of rods and cones. We examined the spectral sensitivity of non-image-forming responses in two profoundly blind subjects lacking functional rods and cones (one male, 56 yr old; one female, 87 yr old). In the male subject, we found …

Worldview Construction: International Relations Concepts Embedded In Elementary Social Studies Textbooks, Louise Massey Strauss
Open Access Dissertations
Early civic education is crucial for worldview formation compatible with living in an increasingly interdependent world. In U.S. public schools, social studies is the locus of civic education. Social studies textbooks are the container of civic subject matter and teachers are its transmitters. Traditionally, civic education has been linked with national identity creation. In this study, educators are challenged to stimulate a complementary cosmopolitan identity because of social, political, and economic globalization trends and transition to an Information (and instant communication) Age. Using the social constructivist perspective, a content analysis model was developed for multi-state study of elementary social studies …

Box Boats: How Container Ships Changed The World, Brian J. Cudahy
Transportation
Fifty years ago—on April 26, 1956—the freighter Ideal X steamed from Berth 26 in Port Newark, New Jersey. Flying the flag of the Pan-Atlantic Steamship Company, she set out for Houston with an unusual cargo: 58 trailer trucks lashed to her top deck.
But they weren’t trucks—they were steel containers removed from their running gear, waiting to be lifted onto empty truck beds when Ideal X reached Texas. She docked safely, and a revolution was launched—not only in shipping, but in the way the world trades. Today, the more than 200 million containers shipped every year are the lifeblood of …
