Positive Psychological Capital: Measurement And Relationship With Performance And Satisfaction, Fred Luthans, Bruce J. Avolio, James B. Avey, Steven M. Norman

Leadership Institute: Faculty Publications

Two studies were conducted to analyze how hope, resilience, optimism, and efficacy individually and as a composite higher-order factor predicted work performance and satisfaction. Results from Study 1 provided psychometric support for a new survey measure designed to assess each of these 4 facets, as well as a composite factor. Study 2 results indicated a significant positive relationship regarding the composite of these 4 facets with performance and satisfaction. Results from Study 2 also indicated that the composite factor may be a better predictor of performance and satisfaction than the 4 individual facets. Limitations and practical implications conclude the article.

When The Romance Is Over: Follower Perspectives Of Aversive Leadership, Michelle C. Bligh, Jeffrey C. Kohles, Craig L. Pearce, Joseph E. (Gene) Justin, John F. Stovall Jan 2007

When The Romance Is Over: Follower Perspectives Of Aversive Leadership, Michelle C. Bligh, Jeffrey C. Kohles, Craig L. Pearce, Joseph E. (Gene) Justin, John F. Stovall

Leadership Institute: Faculty Publications

While leadership is indisputably one of the most pervasive topics in our society, the vast majority of existing research has focused on leadership as a positive force. Taking a follower- centric approach to the study of leadership, we integrate research on the Romance of Leadership and the dark side of leadership by examining followers’ perceptions of aversive leadership in the context of public high schools. Although Meindl, Ehrlich, and Dukerich (1985) demonstrated that the Romance of Leadership also includes the overattribution of negative outcomes to leaders, subsequent research has failed to explore the implications of this potentially darker side of …

Research Strategies To Reduce Bovine Tuberculosis Transmission From Wildlife To Cattle, Are R. Brentensen, Mike R. Dunbar, Robert G. Mclean

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mycobaterium bovis, and is transmissible to humans, wildlife and domestic livestock. In the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan, white-tailed deer ( Odocoileus virginianus) serve as a reservoir for the disease and pose a significant threat to domestic cattle and captive cervids. Scientists at USDA, APHIS, Wildlife Services, National Wildlife Research Center have designed a variety of laboratory and field studies aimed at reducing or eliminating bTB infection in cattle by interrupting the transmission of the disease from wildlife reservoirs. These strategies include reducing bTB in deer by delivery of …

Planning The Future Workforce Of Natural Science Research Collections: A Review Of Graduate Academic Programs In The United States, Stephen L. Williams, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Programs Information

Selected literature and Internet sites were used to identify universities that provide graduate academic degrees relevant to the management and care of natural science research collections. Twelve universities with degree programs not dedicated to the arts or humanity fields were selected for closer evaluation. By analyzing the courses offered in museology and the natural sciences at each university, seven universities were identified as currently in a position to provide some level of education and training needed by the future workforce of natural science research collections. However, only two universities stood out as being in the best position to serve most …

Although English verbs can be either regular (walk-walked) or irregular (sing-sang), “denominal verbs” that are derived from nouns, such as the use of the verb ring derived from the noun a ring, take the regular form even if they are homophonous with an existing irregular verb: The soldiers ringed the city rather than *The soldiers rang the city. Is this regularization due to a semantic difference from the usual verb, or is it due to the application of the default rule, namely VERB + -ed suffix? To gain a new source of insight into …

Estimating Health Utilities And Quality Adjusted Life Years In Seasonal Affective Disorder Research, Michael C. Freed, Kelly J. Rohan, Brian T. Yates Jan 2007

Estimating Health Utilities And Quality Adjusted Life Years In Seasonal Affective Disorder Research, Michael C. Freed, Kelly J. Rohan, Brian T. Yates

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

Background: Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) episodes will recur annually without effective intervention. Effectiveness of such interventions is traditionally measured with depression-specific tools (e.g., Beck Depression Inventory 2nd Edition; BDI-II). In a climate of potentially scarce resources, generic outcomes, such as Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALYs), are recommended for cost-effectiveness research. For treatments to be deemed cost-effective, they must show effectiveness relative to each other and relative to interventions across other disorders. To date, QALYs have not been used to determine effectiveness of SAD treatments. Given the recurrent nature of SAD, QALYs, which weight quality of life with time, are an …

On Terrorism And Whistleblowing, Michael P. Scharf, Colin T. Mclaughlin Jan 2007

On Terrorism And Whistleblowing, Michael P. Scharf, Colin T. Mclaughlin

Faculty Publications

At a Bio-Terrorism Conference at Case Western Reserve University School of Law on March 31, 2006, the government participants were asked what they would do if a superior instructed them not to disclose information to the public about the likely grave health affects of an ongoing bio-terrorist attack. In response, they indicated that they would be reluctant to become a "whistleblower." This is not surprising since, despite the federal and state laws that purport to facilitate such whistleblowing for the public good, government whistleblowers routinely have faced loss of promotion, harassment, firing, and in some instances criminal prosecution when they …

Looking Forward: Toward An Understanding Of The Nature And Definition Of It Acceptance, Andrew Schwarz, Wynn Chin Jan 2007

Looking Forward: Toward An Understanding Of The Nature And Definition Of It Acceptance, Andrew Schwarz, Wynn Chin

Faculty Publications

In the past two decades the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) has successfully catalyzed a large number of studies related to IT usage or intentions toward that usage. However, we argue that the focus of these studies has been on a narrow aspect of usage (typically, extent or frequency of use). Moreover, we suggest that, these studies implicitly include the notion that "IT acceptance" be construed as simply the relationship between antecedent factors such as perceived usefulness and ease of use that target or predict that particular type of intention connected to amount of IT usage. Rather than continuing studies for …

Supermodular Architecture Of Inclusion, Richard R. W. Brooks, Valerie Purdie-Vaughns Jan 2007

Supermodular Architecture Of Inclusion, Richard R. W. Brooks, Valerie Purdie-Vaughns

Faculty Articles

Achieving and managing workplace diversity can be contentious work for employers. As Susan Sturm’s recent article asserts, “[e]mployers face legal and political challenges both for failing to diversify their workplaces and for diversity efforts to overcome that failure.” Both employers and employees find themselves in an ambiguous and highly reactive landscape that offers little structure within which to plan diversity initiatives. Sturm’s thoughtful article, The Architecture of Inclusion, offers some much needed structure to institutional participants engaged in the practice of making inclusive environments. In this brief comment, we build on Sturm’s work, offering a simple suggestion relating to the …

Defanging Irbs: Replacing Coercion With Information, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

Rather than struggle mightily against the odds, I prefer to offer a different perspective to this problem that pays little or no attention to the present structure of constitutional law. Accordingly, my mission is to raise this question of first principle. If we had a sensible small government state, what would be the proper way to fund and control various forms of research both in biology and in the social sciences? I make no pretense that the answers to this question will resonate with either current law or practices. And I undertake this inquiry in order to lay bare what …

"Eat Your Spinach?", Stephen Gillers Jan 2007

"Eat Your Spinach?", Stephen Gillers

Faculty Articles

Earlier, I wrote that in my risk-ignoring, highly optimistic dive into solo Manhattan practice only four years out of law school, I told myself that hard work and concern and respect for clients would ensure success. I can’t teach hard work, but I do make it a point to emphasize the importance of treating clients with concern and respect. Far too often, lawyers don’t do that. (Oh, I could tell you stories!) I ask students to put themselves in the role of a medical patient and appreciate the dependency of the relationship and the need for communication. The more serious …

These three ideas then, I, a twenty-first century American citizen of Anglo-Ghanian ancestry, want to borrow from a citizen of Sinope who dreamed of global citizenship twenty-four centuries ago: (1) We do not need a single world government; but (2) we must care for the fate of all human beings inside and outside our own societies; and (3) we have much to gain from conversation with one another across our differences.
