Mixed Signals, Elizabeth Snipes Dec 2007

Mixed Signals, Elizabeth Snipes

All Theses

My oil on wooden panel paintings demonstrate a curiosity and fondness for a traditional subject, the human figure, and utilize a representational vocabulary to examine an interest in current modes of interpersonal interaction. The work has evolved in conjunction with an investigation of contemporary figurative painting with the purpose of translating a traditional genre and subject matter into a present context of remediation and digital social networking. The resulting paintings utilize recurrent art historical themes of the isolated figure and the sublime, and also contribute to a contemporary conversation surrounding painting's relationship to new media and photography in the twenty-first …

Prickled Lilly Perch, Jillian Ludwig Dec 2007

Prickled Lilly Perch, Jillian Ludwig

All Theses

The Prickled Lilly Perch series consist of graphite drawings and designed wallpaper, functioning as a device to mediate and reflect on morality. This work illustrates and investigates the cyclical system of birth, life, and death through multivalent, polar conditions. These opposing implications of birth, life, and death are investigated through concept and form, and can be seen through the visual language of whimsy, fantasy, subtle narration, symbols, decoration, and delicate detailing. Operational tools to suggest birth, life, and death are described through transitioning forms, an implied direction upon the human form, aging of a plant, portals, an irrational use of …

A Stochastic Multiple Players Multi-Issues Bargaining Model For The Piave River Basin, Alessandra Sgobbi, Carlo Carraro Dec 2007

A Stochastic Multiple Players Multi-Issues Bargaining Model For The Piave River Basin, Alessandra Sgobbi, Carlo Carraro

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The objective of this paper is to investigate the usefulness of non-cooperative bargaining theory for the analysis of negotiations on water allocation and management. We explore the impacts of different economic incentives, a stochastic environment and varying individual preferences on players’ strategies and equilibrium outcomes through numerical simulations of a multilateral, multiple issues, non-cooperative bargaining model of water allocation in the Piave River Basin, in the North East of Italy. Players negotiate in an alternating-offer manner over the sharing of water resources (quantity and quality). Exogenous uncertainty over the size of the negotiated amount of water is introduced to capture …

An Evaluation Of Compatibility, Effectiveness, Utility, And Implementation Of Plagiarism-Detection Software Operating In The Honor Code Environment At Brigham Young University, George Louis Joeckel Dec 2007

An Evaluation Of Compatibility, Effectiveness, Utility, And Implementation Of Plagiarism-Detection Software Operating In The Honor Code Environment At Brigham Young University, George Louis Joeckel

Theses and Dissertations

Turnitin plagiarism-detection software was operating as a pilot program conducted by the Center for Teaching and Learning in Winter 2007 on the Brigham Young University (BYU) campus. A sample of 6 instructors and 79 student users participated in this evaluation. The evaluation findings show that Turnitin is compatible with the academic honesty environment created by BYU's Honor Code. Turnitin has been effective at detecting intentional and inadvertent plagiarism at BYU. It has also addressed the problem of multiple submissions of the same material. Recommendations are made for promoting Turnitin at the campus and department level. Training tools are proposed for …

Medical Insecurity: When One Size Does Not Fit All, Patricia A. Williams Dec 2007

Medical Insecurity: When One Size Does Not Fit All, Patricia A. Williams

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Security is most commonly seen as a business concept. This is one reason for the poor uptake and implementation of standard security processes in non-business environments such as general medical practice. It is clear that protection of sensitive patient information is imperative yet the overarching conceptual business processes required to ensure this protection are not well suited to this context. The issue of sensitivity of information, together with the expectation that security can be effectively implemented by non-security trained professionals creates an insecure environment. The general security processes used by business, including those for risk assessment, are difficult to operationally …

Lexical Conflation And Edible Iconicity: Two Sources Of Ambiguity In American Vernacular Health Terminology, Laurel Smith Stvan Dec 2007

Lexical Conflation And Edible Iconicity: Two Sources Of Ambiguity In American Vernacular Health Terminology, Laurel Smith Stvan

Linguistics & TESOL Faculty Publications & Presentations - Archive

Examination of lexical items in naturally occurring vernacular prose shows patterns of ambiguities in how Americans discuss health issues. Samples from the Freiburg–Brown corpus of American English and varied registers of popular health writing found online reveal two principles of naming beliefs that crosscut the uses of many ambiguous terms: the semantic principle of ‘lexical conflation’ and the semiotic principle of ‘edible iconicity’. Both are shown to reflect sources of nutritional conceptualizations. Lexical conflation is illustrated by uses of fat, cholesterol, sugar, oil, and germ, with modifiers shown to help disambiguate terms. Edible iconicity, where meaning is attached to the …

Byu Students' Beliefs About Language Learning And Communicative Language Teaching Activities, Sarah C. Bakker Dec 2007

Byu Students' Beliefs About Language Learning And Communicative Language Teaching Activities, Sarah C. Bakker

Theses and Dissertations

Learner beliefs, which contribute to attitude and motivation, may affect language learning. It is therefore valuable to investigate the malleability of learner beliefs, and to determine whether potentially detrimental beliefs can be ameliorated. This study examines how instruction of the principles of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) affects students' beliefs about classroom activities and their beliefs about language learning in general. The 68 first-year German students at Brigham Young University who participated in this study were asked to rate the effectiveness of three activities typical of communicative language teaching: Dialogue activities, Peer Interview activities, and Information-gap activities. They were also asked …

The Importance Of Human Factors When Assessing Outsourcing Security Risks, Carl Colwill, Andy Jones Dec 2007

The Importance Of Human Factors When Assessing Outsourcing Security Risks, Carl Colwill, Andy Jones

Australian Information Security Management Conference

The word is becoming increasingly interconnected and ways of doing business are evolving rapidly. Communications technology is ubiquitous and reliable and businesses are continuously seeking ways in which systems can be exploited to improve resilience, become more efficient and reduce costs. One way in which organisations seek to achieve this is by concentrating their efforts on core business processes and outsourcing non-core functions. However, outsourcing - and particularly offshoring - presents many security issues that must be considered throughout the lifetime of contracts. The scale of outsourcing and increasing technological and security complexity is making this task more difficult. Often …

How Safe Is Azeroth, Or, Are Mmorpgs A Security Risk?, An Hilven, Andrew Woodward Dec 2007

How Safe Is Azeroth, Or, Are Mmorpgs A Security Risk?, An Hilven, Andrew Woodward

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs) are at a basic level a networked application. Blizzard’s World of Warcraft is currently the largest example of such a type of application, with over nine million subscribers at last count. Whilst the idea of researching a game for network security may sound trivial, nine million potential backdoors into home and business computers is not. The ports used by the game, as well as authentication methods and client update programs were examined using packet analysis software. No obvious vulnerabilities were discovered as a result of this analysis. In addition to this analysis, an …

An Investigation Into The Usability Of Graphical Authentication Using Authentigraph, Paul Minne, Jason Wells, Damien Hutchinson, Justin Pierce Dec 2007

An Investigation Into The Usability Of Graphical Authentication Using Authentigraph, Paul Minne, Jason Wells, Damien Hutchinson, Justin Pierce

Australian Information Security Management Conference

There is increasing coverage in the literature relating to the different facets surrounding the security service of authentication, but there is a need for further research into the usability of graphical authentication. Specifically, the usability and viability of graphical authentication techniques for providing increased security needs to be further explored. There is a significant amount of evidence relating to traditional authentication techniques which highlight the fact that as technological advances grip modern societies, the requirement for more advanced authentication and security approaches increases. The exponential growth in the number of people using the Internet carries with it the high potential …

Medical Identity Theft – Not Feeling Like Yourself?, Darren Webb Dec 2007

Medical Identity Theft – Not Feeling Like Yourself?, Darren Webb

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Hospital and general practice healthcare providers today rely heavily on the information and communication technologies they employ to provide access to patient and associated data. The continuing migration to wireless means of data transfer has afforded system users more convenient and timely access to information via the use of 802.11 based wireless network capable devices. Through the increased digital connectivity of these internet and wireless based networks, new avenues of criminal activity such as medical identity theft have been steadily increasing as malicious individuals and organisations seek to abuse the digital ubiquity of the electronic medical record. The increased need …

It's Alive! The Gothic (Dis)Embodiment Of The Logic Of Networks, Anna Katharine Bennion Dec 2007

It's Alive! The Gothic (Dis)Embodiment Of The Logic Of Networks, Anna Katharine Bennion

Theses and Dissertations

My thesis draws connections between today's network society and the workings of gothic literature in the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century. Just as our society is formed and affected by the flow of information, the eighteenth-century culture of sensibility was formed by the merging and flow of scientific "technology" (or new scientific discoveries) and societal norms and rules. Gothic literature was born out of this science-society network, and in many ways embodies the ruptures implicit in it. Although gothic literature is not a network in the same sense as informationalism and the culture of sensibility are, gothic literature works according …

A Model Of The Relationship Of Perceived Mental And Emotional Problems In The Family-Of-Origin On Marital Satisfaction Of Adult Offspring, Benjamin Oviatt Weinheimer Dec 2007

A Model Of The Relationship Of Perceived Mental And Emotional Problems In The Family-Of-Origin On Marital Satisfaction Of Adult Offspring, Benjamin Oviatt Weinheimer

Theses and Dissertations

The effects of perceived mental/emotional problems (psychopathology) in the family-of-origin on adult offspring marital satisfaction was tested in a model considering the mediating variables of parental marital satisfaction, mother-child relationship quality, father-child relationship quality, and resolution of issues from the family-of-origin. The nationally representative sample (n = 802) drawn from the RELATionship Evaluation (RELATE) database included mostly college educated, lower-middle-class individuals in their first marriage. This sample was used to test a structural equation model that results showed fit the data well. Results showed that historical (distal) factors (such as psychopathology in the family-of-origin) explain only a small portion of …
