Classifying Foods In Contexts: How Adults Categorize Foods For Different Eating Settings, Christine E. Blake, Carole A. Bisogni, Jeffrey Sobal, Carol M. Devine, Margaret M. Jastran

Faculty Publications

This project examined adults' food cognitions by applying schema theory to explain how adults categorized foods for different contexts. Qualitative interviews and repeated card sort activities for different eating contexts were conducted to elicit as many food categories as possible form 42 US adults. Participants labeled card sort piles with their own words, providing 991 card sort labels. Qualitative analysis of the labels resulted in the emergence of 12 category types. Personal-experience-based types were specific to the individual (e.g., Preference). Context-based types were related to situational aspects of eating episodes (e.g., Location). Food-based types were related to intrinsic properties of …

Assess And Assist: Capacity Building For All Teachers Of Students – With And Without Learning Difficulties, Ken Rowe Sep 2007

Assess And Assist: Capacity Building For All Teachers Of Students – With And Without Learning Difficulties, Ken Rowe

Student learning processes

Following a brief discussion of the fundamental importance of monitoring growth, this paper draws from emerging findings from evidence-based research and ‘state-of-the art’ practice in assessment and reporting of students’ developmental and learning progress – whether or not students experience learning difficulties. The monitoring of individual progress over time requires both diagnostic and developmental assessments of such progress on well-constructed scales (or ‘maps’) that are qualitatively described. The use of such ‘maps’ enables early detection of potential ‘risk factors’, and the monitoring of both individuals and groups across the years of schooling. Such ‘maps’ and their reporting products constitute major …

Occupational Therapy Faculty Publications

Occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants rely on knowledge and skills to guide their intervention planning as they help clients who are experiencing difficulties with engaging in occupation. Sensory integration theory, with its rich history grounded in the science of human growth and development, offers occupational therapy practitioners specific intervention strategies to remediate the underlying sensory issues that affect functional performance.

This article articulates the core principles of sensory integration as originally developed by Dr. A. Jean Ayres, explains the rationale for developing a trademark specifically linked to these core principles, and identifies the impact that this trademark can have …

Validation Of Kolb's Structural Model Of Experiential Learning Using Honey And Mumford's Learning Style Questionnaire, Kai-Kuen Leung, Li-Jen Weng Sep 2007

Validation Of Kolb's Structural Model Of Experiential Learning Using Honey And Mumford's Learning Style Questionnaire, Kai-Kuen Leung, Li-Jen Weng

Journal of Medical Education

Learning Style Questionnaire (LSQ) was developed according to Kolb's experiential learning model which classified learning into a four-stage cycle. The LSQ was translated into Chinese and applied to a convenient sample of students from a university and a nursing school. Seven hundred and twenty students (women 55.1%) completed the survey. Men had a more theorist style than women (P=0.001). Medical students had a more theorist style than other students. Cronbach's coefficient alphas of the four learning styles are 0.65, 0.62, 0.67 and 0.67, respectively. Theorist was positively related to the reflector (r=0.44) and pragmatist (r=0.50). The activist was negatively related …

Integrating Complementary Alternative Medicine Into Nursing Education In Taiwan, Li-Chun Tang, Chang-Shu Tsai, Chung-Hung Tsai Sep 2007

Integrating Complementary Alternative Medicine Into Nursing Education In Taiwan, Li-Chun Tang, Chang-Shu Tsai, Chung-Hung Tsai

Journal of Medical Education

The growing use and practice of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) by the general public and health professionals in the United States and other countries has received significant attention from health care educators. Inadequate educational preparation and training in CAM for health care professionals may jeopardize the well-being of clients. Integration of CAM into nursing curricula is needed for the following reasons: (1) the growing interest in and use of CAM by the general public and health care professionals; (2) the incorporation of CAM into medical curricula and standard practice; (3) greater acceptance of the legitimacy of CAM; (4) the …

Journal of Medical Education

The purposes of this study are to explore work stress, organizational commitment and professional commitment, and to analyze their structural relationships among nursing educators. A cross-sectional survey was designed. The developed Work Stress Inventory (WSI), modified Professional Commitment Scale (PCS) and Organizational Commitment Scale (OCS) were used as measures. A total of 82.6% (n=404) of teachers in 14 junior nursing colleges in Taiwan anonymously completed the questionnaire. The subjects exhibited a medium-high level of work stress, organizational commitment and professional commitment. There was significant negative correlation between work stress and organizational commitment, and significant positive correlation between organizational commitment and …

The Overlooked Costs Of Religious Deference, Robin Fretwell Wilson Sep 2007

The Overlooked Costs Of Religious Deference, Robin Fretwell Wilson

Washington and Lee Law Review

Citing the Qur'an, a German divorce court judge this year denied a fast track divorce to a Muslim woman who had been the victim of domestic violence and death threats from her husband. The judge rejected her application because the husband's exercise of his "right to castigate does not fulfill the hardship criteria" for an expedited divorce. The decision, which sparked a firestorm of controversy, comes at an important time in the movement to embrace pluralistic understandings of family relationships. Scholars and policymakers around the world are advancing various schemes for sharing state control over domestic disputes with religious groups-ranging …

Reforming Entrapment Doctrine In United States V. Hollingsworth, Richard H. Mcadams Sep 2007

Reforming Entrapment Doctrine In United States V. Hollingsworth, Richard H. Mcadams

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This short essay, written for a symposium commemorating Richard Posner's twenty-fifth year as a judge, examines Judge Posner's majority opinion for a closely divided en banc decision on the federal entrapment defense. The cases considers a fundamental issue in the meaning of the element of "predisposition." Judge Posner crafts a boldly innovative reading of the Supreme Court precedent on the topic, introducing the element of "position" or "readiness" to predisposition. I claim the result, properly understood, is to rationalize the doctrine of entrapment.
