Leadership Through Collaborative Strategic Planning: One School’S Journey, Sally Lewis, Sylvia Imler
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Educational administrators, school board members, and policy makers have been mandated to account for the learning and performance of the highly diverse students that comprise today’s classrooms. The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2002 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA 2004) have presented a set of challenges for educating all children using data-driven decisions in a standards-based curriculum with culturally responsive practices. These mandates from federal and state legislation demand a change in administrative culture. These challenges require school personnel to develop plans to adjust their practices to meet the academic and behavioral needs of …

Diplomacy Syllabi
The purpose of this course is to investigate the nature of political leadership and its functions in contemporary society. Particular attention is given to such subjects as leadership and culture, leadership traits, power and influence, patterns of leadership (charismatic, transformational and servant leadership), and the effectiveness of leadership in organizational settings. The main emphasis is on political/organizational leadership but the course blends theory and practice and relies on an interdisciplinary approach drawing from relevant social and behavioral sciences including philosophy and ethics, developmental psychology and sociological, and organizational behavioral sciences.

Abstract
Objective
This study examines the impact of Children's Advocacy Centers (CAC) and other factors, such as the child's age, alleged penetration, and injury on the use of forensic medical examinations as part of the response to reported child sexual abuse.
Methods
This analysis is part of a quasi-experimental study, the Multi-Site Evaluation of Children's Advocacy Centers, which evaluated four CACs relative to within-state non-CAC comparison communities. Case abstractors collected data on forensic medical exams in 1,220 child sexual abuse cases through review of case records.
Results
Suspected sexual abuse victims at CACs were two times more likely to have …

Transformational Experience Through Liberation Pedagogy: A Critical Look At Honors Education, John Mihelich, Debbie Storrs, Patrick Pellett
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
In the context of the national debate over the advantages and disadvantages of honors education, we developed a two-semester honors curriculum designed to draw upon the benefits of integrating teaching and research through student participation in an ethnographic research project. This paper recounts the process of the pedagogy and curriculum and discusses some key findings and outcomes of the students’ ethnographic study. Liberation pedagogy framed the critical questions addressed in the ethnographic study exploring how students in honors programs make sense of their academic selves and their honors program. We emphasize student-researcher findings concerning status and elitism among honors participants …

The outcomes described in these two student voices represent the best of what we hope for in an undergraduate education in an honors program: the pleasure in discovering one’s academic passions; the self-assurance that comes with identifying personal strengths and developing a sense of purpose; and the curiosity and confidence to seek out future opportunities to extend one’s learning whether in graduate school or elsewhere.

Communicative Implications For Female Adolescent Delinquents Who Experienced Maltreatment, Dixie Sanger, Erin Landon, Lindsey Kvasnicka, Lauren Schaefer, Don Belau
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
This study explores findings of interviews from 26 adolescent female participants residing in a correctional facility and ranging in age from 15 to 18 years (M = 17.12). All had experienced maltreatment and difficulty learning in school. The purpose was to examine participants' use of emotional language through modeling communicative strategies and requesting responses from two open-ended questions about their positive and negative experiences in life. Participants expressed positive and negative emotional words modeled by researchers. Preliminary findings suggested educational and communicative relevance as leaders plan programs for girls. Implications suggested that caution be used to determine whether the maltreated …

Voices Of Women In The Field: Laundry And Leadership: A New Dance, Ginny Curley
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
It was the towels that did them in. I sat across from my new clients and probed a bit further. "The towels, you say?" The husband shared a story of how he had wanted to do something nice for his wife, who was studying. So he folded a load of towels and put them away. ''And then?" I continued, not quite sure of how this act of kindness had led to their request for an appointment in our counseling center. "I re-folded them," his wife interjected. "You what?" I asked, breaking the cardinal rule of good counselors who never ask …

Evaluation Of A Psychoeducational Program Designed To Affect Attitudes Associated With Intimate Partner Violence In An Inmate Population, Melani Magee Wheeler
Evaluation Of A Psychoeducational Program Designed To Affect Attitudes Associated With Intimate Partner Violence In An Inmate Population, Melani Magee Wheeler
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a group intervention designed to impact male attitudes associated with the perpetration of intimate partner violence in a correctional setting. Specifically, the group intervention addressed gender role stereotypes and conflict, healthy and unhealthy entitlement attitudes, attitudes toward women, and effective communication and anger management. The group intervention also sought to increase positive attitudes toward seeking psychological assistance among participants. Results of the MANCOVA did not support the efficacy of the psychoeducational program in impacting attitudes among inmates. Implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.
Enhanced Optic Flow Speed Discrimination While Walking: Contextual Tuning Of Visual Coding, Frank H. Durgin, Krista Marie Gigone , '04
Enhanced Optic Flow Speed Discrimination While Walking: Contextual Tuning Of Visual Coding, Frank H. Durgin, Krista Marie Gigone , '04
Psychology Faculty Works
We tested the hypothesis that long-term adaptation to the normal contingencies between walking and its multisensory consequences (including optic flow) leads to enhanced discrimination of appropriate visual speeds during self-motion. In experiments I (task 1) and 2 a two-interval forced-choice procedure was used to compare the perceived speed of a simulated visual flow field viewed while walking with the perceived speed of a flow field viewed while standing. Both experiments demonstrated subtractive reductions in apparent speed. In experiments I and 3 discrimination thresholds were measured for optic flow speed while walking and while standing. Consistent with the optimal-coding hypothesis, speed …

Why Children Still Need A Lawyer, Marcia Robinson Lowry, Sara Bartosz
Why Children Still Need A Lawyer, Marcia Robinson Lowry, Sara Bartosz
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Every day approximately 500,000 children across the United States wake up in foster care, most in foster family homes, though many others in group homes and institutions. These children entered the state foster care system as innocent victims of abuse or neglect occurring in their birth homes. As wards of the state, they depend completely on the government to provide for their essential safety and wellbeing and to reconnect them with a permanent family, hopefully their own.
Though state child welfare agencies possess fundamental legal obligations under the United States Constitution and federal and state statutes to provide adequate care …
Troubled Children And Children In Trouble: Redefining The Role Of The Juvenile Court In The Lives Of Children, Ann Reyes Robbins
Troubled Children And Children In Trouble: Redefining The Role Of The Juvenile Court In The Lives Of Children, Ann Reyes Robbins
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
This Essay considers the emerging research in the area of dual-jurisdiction children, often referred to as "crossover kids "-those currently or previously involved in maltreatment proceedings who have also committed delinquent acts. Part I describes the development of the juvenile courts in the early twentieth century. Part II of this Essay questions the need to "track" children along one legal path or another and points to the pitfalls of providing services to some children through a criminal justice paradigm instead of treating all children through a social work paradigm. Finally, Part III advocates a redesign of the juvenile court- a …

Consideration Of 'Contracting Culture' In Enforcing Arbitration Provisions, Amy J. Schmitz
Consideration Of 'Contracting Culture' In Enforcing Arbitration Provisions, Amy J. Schmitz
Faculty Publications
The Federal Arbitration Act mandates strict and uniform enforcement of standardized pre-dispute arbitration provisions. This may not be proper, however, in light of the importance of context with respect to these provisions. This Article therefore seeks to remind courts of the importance of exchange context by proposing a "contracting culture" continuum for enforcing these arbitration provisions that acknowledges the impacts of these provisions in a particular communal context. "Contracting culture" encompasses economic and non-economic relational factors that impact dispute resolution agreements, but go beyond common conceptions of "culture" focused on ethnicity, nationality, or religion. It also explores beyond the primary …
Regulating "Rent-A-Cops" Post-9/11: Why The Private Security Officer Employment Authorization Act Fails To Address Homeland Security Concerns, Ian Patrick Mcginley
Regulating "Rent-A-Cops" Post-9/11: Why The Private Security Officer Employment Authorization Act Fails To Address Homeland Security Concerns, Ian Patrick Mcginley
Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal
The article critiques the Private Security Officer Employment Authorization Act (PSOEAA) for its limited scope in addressing homeland security concerns related to private security officers. While the Act introduces a background check system, it fails to adequately address terrorist infiltration, training, and cooperation with public law enforcement. The analysis argues that federal regulation, led by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is necessary to enhance the private security industry's role in homeland security. A grant-based regulatory scheme is proposed to incentivize training, cooperation, and improved screening processes for private security officers, particularly those guarding critical infrastructure.
