The population of older adults in the United States is growing rapidly, and in response to demographic changes, a new housing market for elders known as assisted living is emerging as the fastest growing segment of the senior housing arena. While the impact of the transition to institutional facilities has been examined thoroughly in settings such as nursing homes, little is known about the influences of a late-life transition to assisted living (AL) on American elders. This Article focuses on the legal treatment of retaliatory harassment claims. It argues that retaliatory harassment is an often misunderstood and underanalyzed concept in the law of workplace harassment. This Article seeks to distinguish the legal treatment of retaliatory harassment from sexual harassment. Part I of this Article describes the use of harassment as a method of enforcing workplace norms; it details how harassment is used not just to further a worker's own individual sexist (or racist) agenda, but how it is used to keep women (and minority groups) in subordinate positions. Purpose – The goals of the paper are to propose, measure, and empirically test the expectations model of economic nationalism. The model posits that economic nationalism is reflected in people’s expectations of their government, domestic firms, and the general public, in terms of restricting the activities of foreign firms.

Design/methodology/approach – A confirmatory factor analysis is conducted to test the model, using the LISREL procedure.

Findings – Results show acceptable fit for the proposed model. Reliability of each of the three dimensions of economic nationalism is in the acceptable range. A nomological validity test showed that economic nationalism is related …

This Article examines the distributional and other environmental justice issues arising from the current initiative to rapidly site multiple LNG import facilities in order to increase the supply of natural gas into the continental United States. This Article further examines the necessity of creating a national siting scheme to avoid exacerbating existing racial disparities in risk-producing land use practices.

Stereotype Threat: An Intervention With A Focus On Attribution Theory And Group Composition, Megan Frost

When females are in a situation which is high in stereotype threat, they underperform on math tasks in comparison to males. Stereotype threat intervention research has found several methods for improving performance, such as allowing the female participants to attribute potential failure to an external source. This study aimed to replicate the results of a teaching intervention study which consisted of informing participants about stereotype threat, and asking that they attribute any stereotype threat-related anxiety to stereotype threat, and to deter it from interfering with their performance on a math task. Structural Equation Modeling Of Alcohol Issues In An Emergency Department Sample, Karen E. Stamm

Alcohol research often focuses on alcohol use variables. The following project is a development of a structural equation model (SEM) to test the relationships between risk taking, injuries, alcohol expectancies, alcohol consequences, and alcohol use. The model is based on principles from expectancy theory, social learning theory, the theory of reasoned action, and the transtheoretical model. The final mediational model represented a reasonable fit to the data, χ² (70, N = 200) = 161.40, p < 0.001, CFI = 0.91, and RMSEA = 0.09 Risk taking, injuries, and alcohol expectancies were placed as independent factors, alcohol consequences was placed as a mediator factor, and alcohol use was placed as a dependent factor. With the exception of the path from injuries to alcohol consequences, all paths were significant. The results were consistent with existing models of alcohol expectancies, alcohol consequences, and alcohol use. Additionally, there is evidence that risk taking is important in the prediction of alcohol outcomes.

The purpose of this study was to reconceptualize emotional closeness in women's relationships through the introduction of a model of healthy emotional reliance (HER). This study intended to develop and validate a psychometrically sound measure of female healthy emotional reliance that will provide a means by which to measure a re-conceptualization of the healthy portions of merger in female couples. The original focus of merger, based on psychoanalytic theory, has been pathological. More recently it has been to some extent re-conceptualized as a healthy and functional emotional closeness. Research has been conducted which examines the psychological impact of separation from one's cultural resources for refugees living in refugee camps. This study examines the role of access to cultural resources, such as social support, traditional ceremonies, elders and religion, in fostering resilience amongst African refugees. The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of the factors that contribute to resilience and healing in refugee, as well as those factors which contribute to psychological distress. Sociodemographic adjustment of neuropsychological test scores is widely embraced. However, limited research has examined the frequency with which such adjustments alter score profiles, psychologists' decision-making, or diagnostic accuracy. Of particular interest, in an unknown number of cases test scores that are and are not adjusted may yield conflicting interpretations, both of which cannot be correct. Working with the WAIS-Ill and WMS-Ill, this study examined how often, and the extent to which, sociodemographic adjustment altered test score patterns among normal and abnormal groups. The United States and South Africa both endured periods of intense racism produced from rigid social hierarchies. While European populations controlled these institutions, black populations remained marginalized. Critical race theory proposes that race is socially constructed as opposed to inherently biological. Although social construction of the white and black ethnicities formed similarly, the development of the mixing of white and black into biracial peoples developed uniquely in each country. Religion In The Trenches: Liberation Theology And Evangelical Protestantism As Tools Of Social Control In The Guatemalan Civil War (1960-1996), Bryan Manewal

During the early years of Guatemala’s civil war (1960-1996), which pitted the right-wing military regime against leftist revolutionaries, liberation theology became popular among some in the Latin American clergy. Fearing that this new ideology would inspire indigenous populations to join the rebels, the dictatorship looked to suppress the movement inside Guatemala. This research looks at liberation theology, its prominence in the context of the Guatemalan civil war, and the military dictatorship’s use of the opposing tenants of Fundamentalist Protestantism to counter liberation theology’s mass appeal, particularly the ideas of institutionalized sin and the necessity of popular action to exact change.

Perceptions of video games (computer games/games played on consoles) have evolved from stereotypical viewpoints that games are just a type of passive learning. My research demonstrates that video games are indeed active by categorizing levels of interactivity and by providing additional ways that they have educational value: defining the cognitive aspect, drawing a comparison between the developments of a children’s museum, and studying serious games. I then establish the relationship between video games and literature, drawing comparisons between the relationships between the author, reader, and text and the player. I conclude that video games can recategorize literature.

The war on poverty started in America in the early 1960s, and the poverty rate of 22.4 percent in the year 1959 decreased to 11.1 percent in 1973. Regrettably, this war did not last long enough, as poverty rate increased to 15.1 percent in 1993. In the year 2000 the US poverty rate declined, but always stayed above 11.1 percent. Kentucky also did not achieve success in this poverty war, and it resulted in growing numbers of poor people. Laws Against Bubbles: An Experimental-Asset-Market Approach To Analyzing Financial Regulation, Erik F. Gerding

This article analyzes the effectiveness of proposed and actual securities, financial, and tax laws designed to prevent, or dampen the severity of asset price bubbles, including laws designed to mitigate excessive speculation. The article employs experimental asset market research to measure the effectiveness of these anti-bubble laws in correcting mispricings. Experimental asset markets represent complex simulations of stock markets in which subjects trade securities over a computer network. These markets allow scholars to test causal links between legal policies and market effects in ways that empirical research alone cannot. Teacher education is of critical concern to a nation’s well-being. Scripture clearly identifies that the predominant narratives in a nation’s education are directly linked to its citizen’s behaviour (e.g., see Psalm 78, Judges 2). Literature which claims that teacher education has little influence on beliefs that pre-service teachers bring to their initial teacher education may unnerve Christian teacher educators who seek to equip teachers to make a difference in the lives of children and parents in a nation (Berry, 2004; Fletcher, 1997; Hatton & Smith, 1995; Lowery, 2003).
