The Big Questions Of Personality Psychology: Defining Common Pursuits Of The Discipline, John D. Mayer Sep 2007

The Big Questions Of Personality Psychology: Defining Common Pursuits Of The Discipline, John D. Mayer

Psychology

Big questions of personality are those that are simple, important, and often have been asked repeatedly over time, such as “Who am I?” “What is human nature?” and “How does personality work?” This article identifies 20 big questions relevant to personality psychology. The historical background of each question is briefly described, and the questions are arranged into a model of big questions about personality. The questions, it is argued, both reflect and help to clarify the intrinsic interest in studying personality psychology. They offer insight into the cohesive nature of the field of personality by helping to define its common …

Faculty Publications

Fleas serve as arthropod vectors for several emerging and re-emerging infectious disease causing agents including, Rickettsia felis. Although the prevalence of R. felis infection in colonies of fleas has been examined, the influence of the R. felis infection on flea microbiota has not been investigated. We identified three colonies of cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis, with varying prevalence of R. felis infection (Louisiana State University (LSU), 93.8; Professional Laboratory and Research Services Inc. (PLRS), 16.4; Elward II (EL), 0) and subsequently utilized polymerase chain reaction amplification, restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis and sequencing of the 1.4-kb portions of 16S rRNA genes …

Description, Life History, And Parasitism Of A New Species Of Delphacid Planthopper (Hemiptera: Fulgoroidea), James T. Cronin, Stephen W. Wilson Sep 2007

Description, Life History, And Parasitism Of A New Species Of Delphacid Planthopper (Hemiptera: Fulgoroidea), James T. Cronin, Stephen W. Wilson

Faculty Publications

Delphacodes scolochloa Cronin & Wilson (Hemiptera: Fulgoroidea) is a newly discovered delphacid planthopper that feeds and oviposits exclusively on the stems of sprangletop, Scolochloa festucacea (Willd.) Link (Poaceae: Pooidae), in the prairie pothole region of northeastern North Dakota. D. scolochloa is bivoltine. It is also wing dimorphic, but populations are composed predominantly of flightless brachypters. Macropters incur a substantial cost in terms of reduced longevity and fecundity relative to brachypters. The parasitoid complex attacking D. scolochloa consists of two egg parasitoids, Anagrus nigriventris Girault and Anagrus columbi Perkins (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae), and one undescribed dryinid. The proportion of eggs parasitized averages …

Fungi Isolated From Integument And Guts Of Coptotermes Formosanus And Their Antagonistic Effect On Gleophyllum Trabeum, Poornima Jayasimha, Gregg Henderson Sep 2007

Fungi Isolated From Integument And Guts Of Coptotermes Formosanus And Their Antagonistic Effect On Gleophyllum Trabeum, Poornima Jayasimha, Gregg Henderson

Faculty Publications

In our earlier efforts to demonstrate the spread of a brown rot fungus, Gloeophyllum trabeum (Pers.) Murrill by Formosan subterranean termites, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, we found not only that C. formosanus does not spread G. trabeum but also that G. trabeum did not survive in the presence of C. formosanus. Further investigation of this antagonistic interaction between this termite and fungus led to a hypothesis that green-spored fungi may be carried by termites and that they play a role in suppressing the growth of G. trabeum. Fungal cultures were isolated from integument and guts of laboratory-maintained colonies of C. formosanus …

Classifying Foods In Contexts: How Adults Categorize Foods For Different Eating Settings, Christine E. Blake, Carole A. Bisogni, Jeffrey Sobal, Carol M. Devine, Margaret M. Jastran

Faculty Publications

This project examined adults' food cognitions by applying schema theory to explain how adults categorized foods for different contexts. Qualitative interviews and repeated card sort activities for different eating contexts were conducted to elicit as many food categories as possible form 42 US adults. Participants labeled card sort piles with their own words, providing 991 card sort labels. Qualitative analysis of the labels resulted in the emergence of 12 category types. Personal-experience-based types were specific to the individual (e.g., Preference). Context-based types were related to situational aspects of eating episodes (e.g., Location). Food-based types were related to intrinsic properties of …

Fruit And Vegetable Consumption Among College Students In Arkansas And Florida: Food And Culture Vs. Health Knowledge, Christiane Schroeter, Lisa House, Argelia Lorence

Agribusiness

This study determines the impact of demographics, dietary and health knowledge, and food culture on fruit and vegetable consumption of college students in Arkansas and Florida. Our empirical analysis demonstrates that food culture significantly impacts consumption of fruits and vegetables; a finding which emphasizes the need to target cultural aspects when developing effective and efficient management of agribusiness firms. Understanding the antecedents to consumption for products like fruits and vegetables is important to agribusiness industry, policy makers and organizations interested in evaluating the effectiveness of health education in promoting college students’ health and decreasing the trends to obesity.

Effects Of The Environment On The Nutritional Needs Of Grazing Livestock, Alvaro Garcia, Cody Wright Sep 2007

Effects Of The Environment On The Nutritional Needs Of Grazing Livestock, Alvaro Garcia, Cody Wright

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Profitability of grazing operations is related to productivity per acre. Productivity is determined, among other factors, by the efficiency with which the animal harvests the forage. Efficiency can be defined as nutrients consumed per unit of product produced (feed to gain). Costs incurred in this process which are not translated into products are sources of inefficiencies. Costs are not only related to dollars spent by livestock producers but also to nutrient inputs and outputs (balance) incurred by an animal. Just as in your bank account, the animal has a budget in his body with accretions and withdrawals, and when one …

Algal Regulation Of Extracellular Enzyme Activity In Stream Microbial Communities Associated With Inert Substrata And Detritus, Steven T. Rier, Kevin A. Kuehn, Steven N. Francoeur Sep 2007

Algal Regulation Of Extracellular Enzyme Activity In Stream Microbial Communities Associated With Inert Substrata And Detritus, Steven T. Rier, Kevin A. Kuehn, Steven N. Francoeur

Faculty Publications

We tested the hypothesis that algae influence the activities of extracellular enzymes involved in mineralization processes within microbial assemblages in streams. We tested the prediction that the factors that influence algal biomass and photosynthesis (i.e., diel fluctuations in photosynthetically active radiation [PAR], long-term variations in light regime, and community development stage) would have a corresponding effect on extracellular enzyme activities. We also tested the prediction that algae would influence enzyme activities on inorganic substrata and in detrital communities where they ultimately would influence plant litter decomposition rates. We allowed microbial communities to develop on inert substrata (glass-fiber filters) or on …

The illness data showed that the most common illness among the wives involves the respiratory tract, such as cough (7.7%) and asthma (5.1%). Among the husbands, the most common was back pain (10.3%) followed by hypertension, blurred vision and cough (7.7% …

Birds, George M. Linz, Jim Hanzel Sep 2007

Birds, George M. Linz, Jim Hanzel

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Sunflower, due to the easy accessibility and high nutritional value of its seed, is particularly vulnerable to damage by birds (Figure 101). Seeds are exposed and the large head serves as a perch during feeding. Sunflower seed is a preferred bird food because the seed contains many proteins and fats essential to their growth, molt, fat storage and weight maintenance processes. Although many species of birds feed in maturing sunflower fields, the greatest losses are caused by migrating flocks of red-winged blackbirds, yellow- headed blackbirds and common grackles (Figure 102). Significant losses can occur in fields near cattail marshes.

Severe Anaphylactic Reaction At Induction Of Anaesthesia, Aliya Ahmed, Anand Kumar

Department of Anaesthesia

Anaphylaxis is an IgE mediated severe allergic reaction causing release of vasoactive substances from mast cells and basophils after re-exposure to an antigen. Signs and symptoms include flushing, urticaria, hypotension, tachycardia, bronchospasm, cardio-respiratory arrest etc. It can occur at induction of anaesthesia when multiple drugs are being administered, but prompt diagnosis with correct management is the key to a successful outcome. This case report describes a patient who developed severe bronchospasm with difficulty in inflating the lungs and dropping oxygen saturations, alongwith hypotension, tachycardia and widespread flushing, at induction of anaesthesia for elective breast surgery. She was promptly managed and …
