A Community Based Micro Hydro: A Promising Technology For Rural Development In Nepal, Bishwa Koirala
A Community Based Micro Hydro: A Promising Technology For Rural Development In Nepal, Bishwa Koirala
Himalayan Research Papers Archive
The study finds that micro hydro (MH) has significant impact on reduction in fuel wood consumption. Communities are more inclined to harvest fuel wood from government forest. These led to the promotion of MH for forest conservation in rural Nepal. The study reveals that children have significantly less intensity to go for fuel wood collection. Their saved time can be used for study. The study shows a positive impact on time saving of rural women for fuel wood collection; however, a detail study is essential to conclude the finding. A policy measure for an increase installation of MH in rural …

Quantitative Study With Prospective Students: Final Report, The Lawlor Group
Quantitative Study With Prospective Students: Final Report, The Lawlor Group
Data
In February of 2007, Illinois Wesleyan University (Bloomington, Illinois) retained The Lawlor Group (TLG) to conduct an Identity Assessment assignment as one part of its overall strategic planning effort. The purpose of the assignment is to help IWU better understand its identity and obtain a “collective sense of self” as it embarks on a new strategic plan. As part of that assignment—and to augment the investigation and information gathering for the overall assignment—TLG conducted a web survey with prospective students. This research was intended to supplement our qualitative efforts during the site visit and provide quantitative data to support or …

Genetic Diversity And Low Reproductive Success In Isolated Populations Of Utah Juniper (Juniperus Osteosperma, Cupressaceae), Loreen Allphin, Amy F. Hunt, Val J. Anderson
Genetic Diversity And Low Reproductive Success In Isolated Populations Of Utah Juniper (Juniperus Osteosperma, Cupressaceae), Loreen Allphin, Amy F. Hunt, Val J. Anderson
Western North American Naturalist
Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma) has greatly expanded its historical range in the western United States. Management plans for the species have focused on curtailing its encroachment into sagebrush and grassland communities. These plans often include burning or other methods of elimination. These methods may result in subdivision or fragmentation of existing juniper stands. We initiated a study at Dugway Proving Ground, a U.S. Army facility, to examine the effects of fragmentation on the reproductive success of Utah juniper in isolated populations. We used enzyme electrophoresis to quantify genetic variability in isolated populations. We also determined population reproductive success …

Rural Vulnerability And Tea Plantation Migration In Eastern Nepal And Darjeeling, Sarah Besky
Rural Vulnerability And Tea Plantation Migration In Eastern Nepal And Darjeeling, Sarah Besky
Himalayan Research Papers Archive
This paper will analyze migration from rural eastern Nepal to tea plantations in eastern Nepal and Darjeeling and the potentials such migration might represent for coping with rural vulnerability and food scarcity. I will contextualize this paper in a regional history of agricultural intensification and migration, which began in the eighteenth century with Gorkhali conquests of todays Mechi region and continued in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with the recruitment of plantation laborers from Nepal to British India. For many Kiranti ethnic groups, agricultural intensification resulted in social marginalization, land degradation due to over-population and over-farming, and eventual migration to …
