The Detention, Confinement, And Incarceration Of Pregnant Women For The Benefit Of Fetal Health, April L. Cherry Jan 2007

The Detention, Confinement, And Incarceration Of Pregnant Women For The Benefit Of Fetal Health, April L. Cherry

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Section One of this Article discusses the effect of drug policy on the detention and confinement of pregnant women. This section also outlines three types of "fetal protection measures" that result in the detention, confinement, or incarceration of pregnant women in the name of fetal health and examines the legal rationales behind these mechanisms. Section One then questions whether detention is an effective way to reach the state's articulated goal of better fetal outcomes. Section Two offers a discussion of the constitutional rights at issue. This section addresses the ways in which detention violates two essential components of women's rights: …

Placental Localization And Perinatal Outcome, Lucy Emily Goddard Kalanithi Jan 2007

Placental Localization And Perinatal Outcome, Lucy Emily Goddard Kalanithi

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

This retrospective case-control study was designed to investigate the relationship between placental localization and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Pregnant women with an anatomic survey from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2005, and delivery of the pregnancy at Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) were identified using clinical and billing records. Multiple gestation, fetal anomaly, and incomplete medical information were reasons for exclusion. Cases (N=69) were consecutive pregnancies with evidence of IUGR (estimated fetal weight <10th percentile for gestational>age) at last follow-up ultrasound. Randomly selected controls (N=258) from the same time period had no evidence of IUGR. Maternal, ultrasound, delivery, and perinatal data were collected …

Anemia Among Hiv-Infected Individuals In South India, Ramnath Subbaraman Jan 2007

Anemia Among Hiv-Infected Individuals In South India, Ramnath Subbaraman

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Objective: Although highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) resolves a significant proportion of anemia among HIV-patients in Western cohorts, outcomes may vary in developing countries, due to a higher prevalence of nutritional deficiencies, intestinal parasites, tuberculosis, and opportunistic infections. The purpose of this study is to describe the prevalence of, factors associated with, and influence of HAART on, anemia among HIV-infected individuals in South India. Methods: To examine factors associated with anemia, the first-recorded hemoglobin values for adults who visited an HIV tertiary care center in Chennai, India between January 1996 and April 2006 were collected (n=7069). Univariate and multivariate regression …

Clinical Characteristics And Treatment Response To Radiotherapy Of Optic Nerve Sheath Meningiomas, Silas Wang Jan 2007

Clinical Characteristics And Treatment Response To Radiotherapy Of Optic Nerve Sheath Meningiomas, Silas Wang

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Recent reports of success with conventional, conformal, and stereotactic radiotherapy in stabilizing or improving visual function in patients with primary optic nerve sheath meningiomas have reduced the controversy surrounding the optimal treatment of these rare tumors. To analyze trends in the clinical presentation and diagnosis of optic nerve sheath meningiomas and to evaluate the effectiveness and side-effect profile of three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy versus other treatment modalities, a retrospective chart review was performed on patients with optic nerve sheath meningiomas treated at The Eye Care Group and at the Department of Therapeutic Radiology, Yale University School of Medicine, in New Haven, …

Service Coordinators Use Of Routines To Develop Early Intervention Outomes: A Study Of Kentuckys Ifsps, Julie Harp Rutland

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Current legislation and recommended practice have a primary focus on Early Intervention that meets the priorities set forth by families with children who have disabilities. Many theories and current research emphasize the importance of delivering services in a way that supports families to enhance the development of their children through models that reflect the recommendations. Although there are multiple contributions to what is recommended for family-centered philosophy and practice, one single document, the IFSP, guides the delivery of services.Using the content of 91 IFSPs from the state of Kentucky, 8 indicators were analyzed along with service coordinator demographics. This tool …

Finding Value In Switchgrass Today Through Cattle, John A. Guretzky Jan 2007

Finding Value In Switchgrass Today Through Cattle, John A. Guretzky

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Switchgrass has future potential in the Southern Plains as a dedicated cellulosic biofuels crop. In the near and intermediate terms, an economically viable use for switchgrass needs to be found. In May 2007, the Noble Foundation Agricultural Division successfully established a 30-acre field of switchgrass at the Red River Demonstration and Research Farm. Beginning in April 2008, we will evaluate the utilization and value of switchgrass for stocker cattle. Switchgrass may have value for stockers because of its early spring availability, high yields, perennial life form, wide adaptability and low fertilization requirements.

Second-year stands of switchgrass become available for grazing …

Are You Sure You're Saving Enough For Retirement?, Jonathan Skinner Jan 2007

Are You Sure You're Saving Enough For Retirement?, Jonathan Skinner

Dartmouth Scholarship

Many view the soon-to-retire Baby Boomers as woefully unprepared for their golden years, while other economists have taken a more sanguine view of American levels of saving. And if Americans are failures at saving enough for retirement, why are some retirees so happy? The seemingly simple question of "Am I saving enough for retirement?" is apparently not so simple at all. Instead, it touches on a variety of deeper issues in economics, psychology, and health policy. I use the program ESPlanner to present life-cycle retirement wealth targets for a range of incomes and situations typical of American Economic Association members. …

HIV and AIDS

The Horizons program of Population Council, in collaboration with Health Systems Trust, completed the first evaluation of mothers2mothers (m2m) as part of its introduction in KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. It is the first external evaluation that provides quantitative evidence about the role of the well-known m2m program in complementing services to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT). m2m is a peer support program that aims to provide education and psychosocial support to HIV-positive pregnant women and new mothers, help women access existing health care, and follow up with mothers and babies to ensure they receive appropriate medical care after delivery. …

2007 Louisiana Summary: Agriculture And Natural Resources, Lsu Agcenter

Louisiana Summary: Agriculture and Natural Resources

This book tabulates the value of Louisiana agriculture in 2007. Agents and specialists of the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service, as well as other agencies – both private and public – compiled the data. Their analysis focuses on the animal, forestry, fisheries, plant and wildlife commodities that comprise our vital agricultural industry. The agricultural industry continues to contribute significantly to the state’s economy with the potential for increased benefits through value-added processing.

Two years ago, in the fall of 2005, Louisiana farmers, foresters, fishermen and ranchers faced unprecedented challenges associated with the devastation and destruction caused by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. …

The Role Of The Specific, Profilaggrin-Containing Keratohyalin Granules In The Developing Epidermis Of The Fetal Horse Hoof, Hermann H. Bragulla, Dominique G. Homberger Jan 2007

The Role Of The Specific, Profilaggrin-Containing Keratohyalin Granules In The Developing Epidermis Of The Fetal Horse Hoof, Hermann H. Bragulla, Dominique G. Homberger

Faculty Publications

The adult equine hoof is subdivided into distinct segments with various keratinization modes. In the periople and bulbs of the heel, the epidermis forms a Stratum granulosum with basophilic keratohyalin granules during soft keratinization, whereas in the coronet, wall proper, sole, and frog, the epidermis undergoes hard keratinization by keratinizing and comifying without forming keratohyalin granules. The present study tests the hypothesis that the presence of specific (profilaggrin-containing) keratohyalin granules in the hoof epidermis is correlated with the water-binding capacity and mechanical properties of the hoof horn. To identify these specific profilaggrin-containing keratohyalin granules, tissue samples of fetal hooves were …

Common Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms Act In Concert To Affect Plasma Levels Of High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Victor Spirin, Steffen Schmidt, Alexander Pertsemlidis, Richard S. Cooper, Jonathan C. Cohen, Shamil R. Sunyaev

Faculty Publications

The identification of DNA sequence variants underlying human complex phenotypes remains a significant challenge for several reasons: individual variants can have small phenotypic effects or low population frequencies, and multiple allelic variants may act in concert to affect a trait. We evaluated the combined effect of allelic variants in seven genes involved in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) metabolism, using forward stepwise regression. Analysis of all known common single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the seven candidate genes revealed four variants that were associated with incremental changes in HDL cholesterol levels in three independent samples. Conversely, analysis of 660 polymorphisms in eight genes that …

Faculty Publications

An introduced cucurbit Coccinia grandis (Linnaeus) Voigt has grown into problem proportions in Hawaii and the Pacific islands of Guam and Saipan. The biology of Acythopeus burkhartorum OBrien, 1998, a potential biological-control agent of C. grandis, has been described. By inducing the gall a sink for nutrients and by deriving nutrition, A. burkhartorum places C. grandis under stress. Especially during the late larval stage, the weevil displays an unusual behaviour of shredding dry gall tissues with its mandibles to prepare the pupal case and using the shredded sclerenchyma fibres to fill the open and cut ends of the pupal case. …

Antioxidant Activity And Phenolic Composition In 'Beauregard' Sweetpotato Are Affected By Root Size And Leaf Age, Malkeet S. Padda, D. H. Picha

Faculty Publications

Phenolic acids are considered important antioxidants that may help to prevent many human chronic diseases. The antioxidant activity and phenolic content of sweetpotato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] roots and leaves of different sizes and ages, respectively, were quantified. Small roots (≈4 g root weight) had a higher antioxidant activity and phenolic content compared with full-sized marketable roots (≈300 g root weight). Phenolic content in marketable roots was significantly higher in the cortex tissue than in the internal pith tissue. The highest total phenolic content [chlorogenic acid equivalents (10.3 mg·g-1 dry weight)] and antioxidant activity [Trolox equivalents (9.7 mg·g-1 dry weight)] …

The Impact Of The Atlantic Slave Trade On West Africa: Polygyny And Female Reproductive Success, Katherine Lamie Jan 2007

The Impact Of The Atlantic Slave Trade On West Africa: Polygyny And Female Reproductive Success, Katherine Lamie

Nebraska Anthropologist

J.D. Fage (1969) and Patrick Manning (1981; 1990) examine demographic data from historical records, in the West African political and economic context, in order to formulate theories of the impact of the Atlantic slave trade on West African populations and social structure. However, Fage and Manning come to markedly different conclusions. Fage maintains that the intensification of polygyny in West Africa that accompanied the Atlantic slave trade preserved African populations. In contrast, Manning argues that intensified polygynous marriages on the West African coast decreased the fertility of female slaves, thereby depressing population growth and affecting traditional social structures. Manning later …

Bioprospecting And Biopiracy In Latin America: The Case Of Maca In Perú, Amanda J. Landon Jan 2007

Bioprospecting And Biopiracy In Latin America: The Case Of Maca In Perú, Amanda J. Landon

Nebraska Anthropologist

Bioprospecting is a popular venture in Latin America due to the regions' high concentration of the world's biodiversity. This activity has an impact on the native peoples living in areas with potentially profitable plants. They can lose access to traditional plants and extraction processes when companies patent indigenous cultivars and knowledge. In many cases, they cannot patent their cultivars and knowledge before others due to cultural and monetary restrictions. In this paper, I examine the legal and cultural context surrounding the battle over Lepidium meyenii (maca) in Peru. Pure World, Inc., a United States pharmaceutical company, patented the extracts derived …

Feeding The World One Seed At A Time: A Practical Alternative For Solving World Hunger, Frank Tenente Jan 2007

Feeding The World One Seed At A Time: A Practical Alternative For Solving World Hunger, Frank Tenente

Northwestern Journal of Human Rights

This paper explores the effectiveness of current foreign aid food programs in providing underdeveloped countries, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa, with the ability to solve hunger within those countries. More specifically, this paper advocates for the integration of genetically modified agricultural seeds into current foreign food aid programs. The science behind genetically modified seeds is briefly explored, along with the international covenants and declarations that deal with the "right to food." This paper discusses the advantages of providing genetically modified agricultural seeds to rural farming communities within Sub-Saharan Africa, and how such food aid would curb hunger levels in those countries. As …
