Interpreting And Managing Blood Lead Levels Of Less Than 10 Μg/Dl In Children And Reducing Childhood Exposure To Lead: Recommendations Of The Centers For Disease Control And Prevention Advisory Committee On Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention, Helen J. Binns, Carla Campbell, Mary Jean Brown
United States Public Health Resources
Lead is a common environmental contaminant. Lead exposure is a preventable
risk that exists in all areas of the United States. In children, lead is associated with
impaired cognitive, motor, behavioral, and physical abilities. In 1991, the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention defined the blood lead level that should
prompt public health actions as 10 µg/dL. Concurrently, the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention also recognized that a blood lead level of 10 µg/dL did not
define a threshold for the harmful effects of lead. Research conducted since 1991
has strengthened the evidence that children’s physical and mental development …

United States Public Health Resources
Here, we describe a novel microarray-based approach for investigating the genomic diversity of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in a semi-high throughput manner using a high density, oligonucleotide-based microarray. This microarray, designed to detect polymorphisms at each of 60,000 base-pair (bp) positions within an E. coli genome, is composed of overlapping 29-mer oligonucleotides specific for 60 equally spaced, 1000-bp loci of the E. coli O157:H7 strain EDL933 chromosome. By use of a novel 12-well microarray that permitted the simultaneous investigation of 12 strains, the genomes of 44 individual isolates of E. coli O157:H7 were interrogated. These analyses revealed more than 150 single …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The objectives of this study were to expand the database and determine the intestinal digestibility of rumen undegradable protein (dRUP) of common dairy feeds and to determine the effects of feeding 37.9% wet corn gluten feed on these estimates. Two ruminally and duodenally fistulated steers were assigned randomly to a crossover design with 4-wk periods. The mobile bag technique was used to determine rumen undegradable protein (RUP), dRUP, total tract digestible protein, and total tract digestible dry matter of alfalfa hay, brome hay, alfalfa haylage, corn silage, whole cottonseed, soybean meal, soyhulls, ground corn, nonenzymatically browned soybean meal, and dried …

Dietary Behaviors And Anthropometric Measurements Of Mexican Women And Second Generation Mexican American Women, Liane Fernyhough
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Risk for chronic diseases is higher among Mexican Americans than in the general American population. A high percentage of central Washington Mexican Americans (CWMAs) immigrated from Michoacan, Mexico. The purpose of this study was to determine if dietary behaviors differ between women living in these areas and if these differences were associated with physiological differences. Sixty-one women (ages 18-50) in Morelia Michoacan and 26 second-generation CWMA women (ages 18-50) participated. Body mass index tended to be higher in the CWMA women (32±7 vs. 29±6, p≤0.06) as was waist circumference (39±7 vs 36±5 inches, p≤0.06). those surveyed in both Michoacan and …
Ultrafine Particle Initiation Of Lipid Peroxidation In Mitochondria, Josephine Kimberly Wells
Ultrafine Particle Initiation Of Lipid Peroxidation In Mitochondria, Josephine Kimberly Wells
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Studies have shown that car exhaust particles increase cellular oxidative stress (Li, 2002), and people who live in highly polluted areas have shown a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease (Beck, 2005). Recently a theory has been developed that ultrafine particles (< 0.1 µm in diameter) contained in the atmospheric pollution are responsible for initiating the adverse effects of damage and disease (Li, 2003).
Ultrafine particles (UFP), which make up 72% of the particle concentration in the air (Beck, 2005), typically originate from sources involving combustion, such as cars, forest fires, volcanoes and industry (USDHHS, 1995). The small size and abundance of UFPs provide ample surface area with an increased absorption for damaging substances such as iron or reactive organic compounds (Beck, 2005; …

Tool-Related Cognition In New Caledonian Crows., Lucas A. Bluff, Alex A.S. Weir, Christian Rutz
KIP Articles
The extent to which non-humans understand their physical world is controversial, due to conceptual and empirical difficulties. We examine the evidence for physical understanding in the remarkable tool-oriented behaviour of New Caledonian crows, which make several types of tool in the wild and show prolific tool-related behaviour in captivity. We summarize our own research into the cognitive processes involved in tool behaviour in this species, and review comparable studies in other birds and primates. Our main laboratory findings are: tool-related behaviour emerges in juvenile crows that had no opportunity to learn from others; adult crows can make or select tools …

HIV and AIDS
The Horizons program, in partnership with International Medical Corps and Steadman Research Services International, conducted an intervention study in Kibera, an urban slum in Nairobi, Kenya to determine what effect three different community-based activities had on utilization of key prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) services. The interventions included moving services closer to the population via mobile clinics, as well as increasing psychosocial support through the use of traditional birth attendants and peer counselors as PMTCT promoters. Data from the study showed that there were positive trends during the study period in most of the PMTCT indicators, including knowledge of MTCT, …

Transcending Boundaries To Improve The Food Security Of Hiv-Affected Households In Rural Uganda: A Case Study, Katharine Coon, Jessica Ogden, John Odolon, Anthony Obudi-Owor, Charles Otim, James Byakigga, Peter Spebanja
HIV and AIDS
A case study conducted in Tororo, Uganda found that a partnership between TASO, an AIDS service NGO and agricultural extension, was successful in helping HIV-affected communities improve food security. This Horizons study reports that four participatory training workshops developed through the alliance resulted in improved management capacity and more collaborative organizational structures among the district partners. This in turn created the conditions for the AIDS community workers and other field partners to work more effectively together with farmers’ groups at the local level to identify and address constraints to food security.

Reaching Truckers In Brazil With Non-Stigmatizing And Effective Hiv/Sti Services, Magda Chinaglia, Sheri A. Lippman, Julie Pulerwitz, Maeve De Mello, Rick Homan, Juan Diaz
HIV and AIDS
Research with mobile populations has demonstrated that men in the mobile workforce tend to be exposed to greater HIV risk, and have higher sexually transmitted infection (STI) and HIV prevalence, than those in less mobile or non-mobile professions. At the request of the Brazilian Ministry of Health and with support from USAID/Brazil, the Population Council conducted an assessment in Brazilian border areas to determine which populations were most in need of HIV prevention activities. The research revealed the presence of an extremely mobile, international truck driver community with little to no access to HIV prevention, testing, and treatment services. The …

HIV and AIDS
A principal concern of antiretroviral therapy (ART) programs is the ability of clients to maintain a high level of adherence to medication. Based on formative research conducted with HIV-infected clients and health workers in Mombasa, Kenya, and lessons learned from directly observed therapy strategies to encourage adherence to treatment for tuberculosis, a directly administered antiretroviral therapy (DAART) strategy to promote adherence to ART was developed. This study examines whether the intervention was more effective in fostering adherence to ART than standard follow-up among people living with HIV in Mombasa. Researchers from the Horizons Program and the International Centre for Reproductive …

The Quest For Legitimacy In American Administrative Law, Marshall J. Breger
The Quest For Legitimacy In American Administrative Law, Marshall J. Breger
Scholarly Articles
In the United States, administrative law suffers from a perceived lack of legitimacy largely due to a lack of democratic accountability or what some have called a democratic deficit. These misgivings stem, in part, from a deep-seated American distrust of bureaucracy. This Article examines how the quest for legitimacy has led practitioners (and theorists) of administrative law to undertake our interrelated projects: the Accountability Project, the Rationality Project, the Transparency Project, and the Participatory Project, all designed to create a substitute or shadow form of democratic legitimacy.
Through an examination of these projects, I clarify how they try to address …

Honors Capstones
The purpose of this study is to take a closer look at the debate about corporate social responsibility (CSR) and the emerging importance of such initiatives in the modem business environment. This study sought to answer the question of whether corporate social responsibility is an attainable goal or not? In addition, this study sought to determine whether corporate social responsibility produces tangible benefits for a firm. This study uses examples of businesses such as Wal-Mart, Shell, McDonalds, and British Petroleum to illustrate how implementations of CSR initiatives enhance a company's financial and non-financial metrics. The study also examines reasons why …
