Utah Prairie Dog Habitat Evaluation Guide, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Environmental Defense
Utah Prairie Dog Habitat Evaluation Guide, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Environmental Defense
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
The Utah prairie dog (Cynomys parvidens) (UPD) is listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and exists only in southwestern Utah. UPD numbers and range have declined dramatically since settlement of Utah because of conversion of rangeland to cropland, urban development, fire suppression, improper grazing, drought, and introduced sylvatic plague (Yersina pestis). As of this writing, approximately 75% of all Utah prairie dogs inhabit private lands. This fact highlights the need to encourage farmers and ranchers to manage UPD habitat on their property in order to move the species closer to recovery. This guide provides technical …

Factors Influencing Epiphytic Lichen Communities In Aspen-Associated Forests Of The Bear River Range, Idaho And Utah, Paul C. Rogers
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
In western North America, quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) is the most common hardwood in montane landscapes. Fire suppression, grazing, wildlife management practices, and climate patterns of the past century are some of the threats to aspen coverage in this region. Researchers are concerned that aspen-dependent species may be losing habitat, thereby threatening their long-term local and regional viability. Though lichens have a rich history as air pollution indicators, I believe that they may also be useful as a metric of community diversity associated with habitat change. To date, few studies have specifically examined the status of aspen’s epiphytic lichen …

Comparison Of Pilates And Hydraulic Circuit Training In Women, Shauna Differding, Sandra Hoff, Sara Murray
Comparison Of Pilates And Hydraulic Circuit Training In Women, Shauna Differding, Sandra Hoff, Sara Murray
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Introduction: Obesity continues to be a rising problem in the United States. Women typically are the majority of consumers in weight treatment programs. Due to conflicts with time and social roles, they struggle to remain committed to an exercise program. Most women enter into weight treatment programs not for health, but rather for appearance.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of cardiovascular function, flexibility, strength and circumferential measurements between mat Pilates and hydraulic circuit training over a six-week period. The benefits of these comparisons will help women find an effective and efficient fitness program. As …

Electromyographic Analysis Of Abdominal And Low Back Musculature During Use Of An Experimental Stationary Bicycle, Bryce A. Kelly, Christopher L. Podoll, Kirk R. Van Slyke
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Background and Purpose. Currently, stationary bicycles do not incorporate exercise for the abdominal and low back musculature. An experimental stationary bicycle, the Magnus Cycle, has been developed to increase trunk muscle activation and, at the same time, provide aerobic conditioning. The purpose of this study is to assess the activity of the rectus abdominus, external oblique, erector spinae, rectus femoris and biceps femoris muscles during a stationary cycling setting and during a tilt-in-space setting of the Magnus Cycle.
Subjects. Sixteen subjects, both men and women, between the ages of 18 and 30 participated in this study.
Methods. Surface electromyography (EMG) …

Regulation Of Hyphal Morphogenesis By Cdc42 And Rac1 Homologues In Aspergillus Nidulans, Aleksandra Virag, Maurice P. Lee, Haoyu Si, Steven D. Harris
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The ability of filamentous fungi to form hyphae requires the establishment and maintenance of a stable polarity axis. Based on studies in yeasts and animals, the GTPases Cdc42 and Rac1 are presumed to play a central role in organizing the morphogenetic machinery to enable axis formation and stabilization. Here, we report that Cdc42 (ModA) and Rac1 (RacA) share an overlapping function required for polarity establishment in Aspergillus nidulans. Nevertheless, Cdc42 appears to have a more important role in hyphal morphogenesis in that it alone is required for the timely formation of lateral branches. In addition, we provide genetic evidence …

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
A screen for antifungal compounds from Lysobacter enzymogenes strain C3, a bacterial biological control agent of fungal diseases, has previously led to the isolation of heat-stable antifungal factor (HSAF). HSAF exhibits inhibitory activities against a wide range of fungal species and shows a novel mode of antifungal action by disrupting the biosynthesis of a distinct group of sphingolipids. We have now determined the chemical structure of HSAF, which is identical to that of dihydromaltophilin, an antifungal metabolite with a unique macrocyclic lactam system containing a tetramic acid moiety and a 5,5,6-tricyclic skeleton. We have also identified the genetic locus responsible …

Scatology And The Sacred In Milton's Paradise Lost, Kent Lehnhof
Scatology And The Sacred In Milton's Paradise Lost, Kent Lehnhof
English Faculty Articles and Research
In his classic study, "The Dialectics of Creation," Michael Lieb foregrounds the myriad ways in which Milton uses scatology throughout "Paradise Lost" to describe the depravity of the devil. But Satan is not the only character in the epic to be associated with excretion. Milton's angels and Milton's God are also implicated in the operations of the lower bodily stratum. In these instances, however, allusions to the evacuative functions attest to an exalted divinity rather than a disgusting diabolism. Evacuation in "Paradise Lost" is thus a highly complex signifier. Not simply a pejorative pointing inevitably at a damnable degradation, scatology …

Plant-Feeding Behaviour And Its Efects On The Fitness And Competence Of The Malaria Vector Anopheles Gambiae (Diptera: Culicidae), Manda Hortance Manda
Plant-Feeding Behaviour And Its Efects On The Fitness And Competence Of The Malaria Vector Anopheles Gambiae (Diptera: Culicidae), Manda Hortance Manda
All PhD Dissertations
Malaria remains a serious threat in sub-Saharan Africa Available control tools are now largely ineffective. Because of the role of vectors in malaria transmission, integrated vector management strategies that are environmentally safe, economically feasible and acceptable to resource-limited communities are one way to achieve effective malaria control. However, adequate knowledge of the biology, behaviour and ecology of the malaria vectors are imperative. Sugar-feeding from plants is a basic requirement for adult mosquitoes, and so far have received little attention. The present study, conducted in Suba district (a malaria endemic area of western Kenya), aimed to investigate the plant-feeding behaviour and …

Self-Medication And Homeostatic Behaviour In Herbivores: Learning About The Benefits Of Nature’S Pharmacy, Juan J. Villalba, Frederick D. Provenza
Behavioral Education for Human, Animal, Vegetation, and Ecosystem Management (BEHAVE)
Traditional production systems have viewed animals as homogeneous ‘machines’ whose nutritional and medicinal needs must be provided in a prescribed manner. This view arose from the lack of belief in the wisdom of the body to meet its physiological needs. Is it possible for herbivores to select diets that meet their needs for nutrients and to write their own prescriptions? Our research suggests it is. Herbivores adapt to the variability of the external environment and to their changing internal needs not only by generating homeostatic physiological responses, but also by operating in the external environment. Under this view, food selection …
The Proper Scope Of Patentability In International Law, Shawn J. Kolitch
The Proper Scope Of Patentability In International Law, Shawn J. Kolitch
Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review
Patent law encourages innovation, but the harm caused by some inventions may outweigh the benefits of disclosure. This article examines the environmental and public health consequences of patent laws around the world and argues that the patent incentive should be selectively removed to mitigate the harmful effects of granting patents without regard to the invention-specific impacts of doing so.

Causes And Consequences Of Prolonged Dormancy For An Iteroparous Geophyte, Silene Spaldingii, Peter Lesica, Elizabeth E. Crone
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
1. Prolonged dormancy, during which a plant does not produce above-ground shoots during one or more growing seasons, is common in temperate herbaceous species, but its role in life history is poorly understood.
2. We analysed stage transitions to determine the consequences of prolonged dormancy for Silene spaldingii, a perennial geophyte of semi-arid grasslands in the Columbia Basin of western North America. We monitored 179 S. spaldingii plants from 1987 through 2005, and analysed demographic rates as a function of plant state and seasonal precipitation.
3. Dormant plants had similar survival and growth to vegetative plants, and were more …

What’S Good For The Goose…The Israeli Supreme Court, Foie Gras And The Future Of Farmed Animals In The United States, Mariann Sullivan, David J. Wolfson
Law and Contemporary Problems
Of particular interest in the issue of cruelty to farmed animals is the 2003 decision by the Supreme Court of Israel, sitting as the High Court of Justice, annulling, on animal cruelty grounds, regulations regarding the force-feeding of geese for the production of foie gras, and, ultimately, prohibiting the practice and thereby eradicating the industry.
