Genetic Selection, Sex And Feeding Treatment Affect The Whole-Body Chemical Composition Of Sheep, G. C. Emmans, R. M. Lewis
Genetic Selection, Sex And Feeding Treatment Affect The Whole-Body Chemical Composition Of Sheep, G. C. Emmans, R. M. Lewis
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Hypotheses on total body chemical composition were tested using data from 350 Suffolk sheep grown to a wide range of live weights, and fed in a non-limiting way, or with reduced amounts of feed, or ad libitum on feeds of reduced protein content. The sheep were from an experiment where selection used an index designed to increase the lean deposition rate while restricting the fat deposition rate. Ultrasound muscle and fat depths were the only composition measurements in the index. The animals were males and females from a selection (S) line and its unselected control (C). The protein content of …

Enhancing Fertiliser Use Efficiency For Transplanted Vegetables, Dennis Phillips, Aileen Reid, Gavin D'Adhemar
Horticulture research reports
Horticulture Australia (HAL) Project No. VG04018.
Project VG 04018 ‘Enhancing fertiliser use efficiency for transplanted vegetables’ showed that spraying highly concentrated solutions containing nitrogen over newly transplanted vegetable seedlings for between 14 and 21 days after planting can increase marketable yields by as much as 300% compared to other methods of fertiliser application. Crops that this method has been successfully tested on in this study by the W.A. Department of Agriculture and Food include iceberg and Cos lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage (wombok), celery and cabbage.
The research was conducted on virgin sandy soils of the Swan Coastal Plain near …

Barriers To Development And Implementation Of School District Nutrition And Wellness Policies In San Bernardino County, California, Mary-Jean Paula Stevenson
Barriers To Development And Implementation Of School District Nutrition And Wellness Policies In San Bernardino County, California, Mary-Jean Paula Stevenson
Theses Digitization Project
The primary research question to be answered from this study was: to what degree have school districts in the County of San Bernardino been able to respond to federal legislation mandating the design and implementation of local school wellness policies. A major finding was that the majority of districts have not yet implemented nutrition and wellness policies.
Caring Globally: Jane Addams, World War One, And International Hunger, Marilyn Fischer
Caring Globally: Jane Addams, World War One, And International Hunger, Marilyn Fischer
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Several feminist philosophers, including Virginia Held, Joan Tronto, and Fiona Robinson, see the need for, and the potential of, care ethics for achieving far-reaching political and even global transformation. Tronto recommends that care be used as "a basis for political change" and a "strategy for organizing" (Tronto 1993, 175). Held advocates that "the ethics of care should transform international politics and relations between states as well as within them" (Held 2006, 161).
During and immediately after World War One, Jane Addams attempted to do just that. She sought to bring perspectives and moral sensibilities that have since been theorized in …

Advancing Transdisciplinary And Translational Research Practice: Issues And Models Of Doctoral Education In Public Health, Linda Neuhauser, Dawn M. Richardson, Sonja Mackenzie, Meredith Minkler
Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations
Finding solutions to complex health problems, such as obesity, violence, and climate change, will require radical changes in cross-disciplinary education, research, and practice. The fundamental determinants of health include many interrelated factors such as poverty, culture, education, environment, and government policies. However, traditional public health training has tended to focus more narrowly on diseases and risk factors, and has not adequately leveraged the rich contributions of sociology, anthropology, economics, geography, communication, political science, and other disciplines. Further, students are often not sufficiently trained to work across sectors to translate research findings into effective, large-scale sustainable actions. During the past 2 …

Growing Cucumbers In Protected Cultivation In Western Australia, John Burt
Growing Cucumbers In Protected Cultivation In Western Australia, John Burt
All other publications
There are over 20 growers who produce cucumbers under protected cultivation in Western Australia, ranging from Manjimup in the South-West to Geraldton and Carnarvon. They mainly grow these crops hydroponically in greenhouses. There is also some production under shadecloth and some crops are grown in soil. There are two types of cucumbers grown under protected cultivation. The Continental or burpless cucumber is the main type of cucumber and has long fruit, whereas the Lebanese (mini) cucumber has shorter fruit. Compared with field cucumbers, these two types are seedless and do not require pollination to produce fruits. To ensure they are …
The Effects Of Trivalent Arsenicals And Thioredoxin Reductase Inhibitors On Selenium Metabolism In Lung Cell Culture Models, Sarah Ryann Talbot
The Effects Of Trivalent Arsenicals And Thioredoxin Reductase Inhibitors On Selenium Metabolism In Lung Cell Culture Models, Sarah Ryann Talbot
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Arsenic exposure, through various routes, is associated with the development of cancer of the skin, lung, liver, kidney, and bladder. Treatment of cells in culture with trivalent arsenicals has been shown to increase reactive oxygen species (ROS). In particular, monomethylarsonous acid (MMAIII), a trivalent metabolite of arsenite, is highly cytotoxic and possibly carcinogenic. Three trivalent arsenicals; arsenite, arsenic trioxide (ATO), and MMAIII, are also known inhibitors of the selenoprotein thioredoxin reductase (TrxR). Selenium, an essential micronutrient in mammals, is needed in the form of selenocysteine for activity of this enzyme and other selenoproteins. TrxR is part of a key component …
Making Sense Of The Right To Truth In Educational Ethics: Toward A Theory And Practice That Protect The Fundamental Interests Of Adolescent Students, Anja Matwijkiw, Willie Mack
Making Sense Of The Right To Truth In Educational Ethics: Toward A Theory And Practice That Protect The Fundamental Interests Of Adolescent Students, Anja Matwijkiw, Willie Mack
Intercultural Human Rights Law Review
In this article, we address the theoretical issues, both ethical and purely philosophical, of truth as a human right for adolescent students in public secondary schools. As for the purely philosophical aspect, this concerns ontology which raises the question how can truth exist, while epistemology asks how can people acquire the truth. While the right to truth can also be substantiated by ethics, it would not make sense to advance this right unless "truth" referred to a reality that humans have access to. On our premises, the right to truth is a right to know all education relevant facts which …
