High Dietary Fat Intake Is Not Associated With High Levels Of Circulating Lipoproteins Or Total Cholesterol, C. Jayne Brahler, C. Wilson, Janine Baer
Physical Therapy Faculty Publications
The objective of this study was to determine the association between dietary intake of fats, waist to hip ratio (WHR), body mass index (BMI), and blood lipoproteins and total cholesterol (TC) using food frequency data in one group of apparently healthy, urban African American women and their daughters (n = 110). Subjects were fasted when blood was drawn, waist and hip circumferences and body weight and height were measured, and WHR and BMI were calculated.
Average daily total fat intakes were 91.46 g and 77.83 g for mothers and daughters, respectively, but average LDL levels of 104.4 g/L and 103.1 …

The Importance Of Incorporating Nutrition Education Programs In Elementary Schools, Tracey Henzel
The Importance Of Incorporating Nutrition Education Programs In Elementary Schools, Tracey Henzel
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Throughout the United States childhood obesity has become a major concern. The amount of unhealthy foods children are consuming is the highest it has even been. Eating unhealthily has proven to affect children in school, both academically and behaviorally. For this applied project, the importance of incorporating nutrition education programs in elementary schools was questioned and investigated. The Nutrition Education Program was designed and proposed to effectively teach children the importance of maintaining healthy diets. This program was also made to be user friendly for all elementary general education teachers. The program was presented to six people; two administrators, two …
The Concept Of Population Health Within The Nursing Profession, Sharon Radzyminski
The Concept Of Population Health Within The Nursing Profession, Sharon Radzyminski
Nursing Faculty Publications
Population health is a concept that has been developed over several centuries by many disciplines. Over time various aspects of the concept have dominated as issues related to behaviors and beliefs surrounding health practices have emerged. This has created a cadre of terms that are often used interchageably but have different meanings among various disciplines. This paper will review the concept of population health within the discipline of nursing and discuss its relationship with public health, community health, and population-focused care.

Effects Of A Combined Aquatic Exercise And Walking In Sedentary Obese Females Undergoing A Behavioral Weight-Loss Intervention, Elizabeth F. Nagle, Robert J. Robertson, John J. Jakicic, Amy D. Otto, Julie R. Ranalli, Laurel B. Chiapetta
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Background: The effects of the non-weight bearing method of aquatic exercise as a modality for weight loss have not been established. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a combined aquatic exercise and walking program compared to walking alone on body weight and selected variables in obese females undergoing a 16-week Standard Behavioral Treatment (SBT) program. Methods: Forty-four obese (BMI 34.9 ± 3.8 kg·m2) sedentary women (age=40.3 years ± 6.8 yrs) were randomly assigned to either an aquatic exercise (AE) group or a traditional walking (W) exercise only group. Both groups were also required to complete …

Lactate Testing Revisited: A Reliable Indicator Of Training Progress For All Swimmers., Stasinos Stavrianeas, Al Stephenson
Lactate Testing Revisited: A Reliable Indicator Of Training Progress For All Swimmers., Stasinos Stavrianeas, Al Stephenson
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
We examined the use of lactate testing to monitor training progress in swimming at a small liberal arts college, using an inexpensive handheld lactate analyzer. The tests were carried out by undergraduates as part of their investigative learning curriculum in exercise science. Twelve female athletes participated in a 2-year program of periodic testing using a 5 × 200 swim of increasing intensity. Blood lactate values were measured from a sample obtained 2-4 min after each swim, plotted against swim time, and the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) was identified. MLSS improved significantly throughout the training period (higher by 0.56 mmol/L …

Besser, Nurmohammad Shaikh, Nicholas J. Holt, Phillip I. Tarr, Michael E. Konkel, Preeti Malik-Kale, Coilin W. Walsh, Thomas S. Whittam, James L. Bono
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
E. coli O157:H7, a zoonotic human pathogen for which domestic cattle are a reservoir host, produces a Shiga toxin(s) (Stx) encoded by bacteriophages. Chromosomal insertion sites of these bacteriophages define three principal genotypes (clusters 1 to 3) among clinical isolates of E. coliO157:H7. Stx-encoding bacteriophage insertion site genotypes of 282 clinical and 80 bovine isolates were evaluated. A total of 268 (95.0%) of the clinical isolates, but only 41 (51.3%) of the bovine isolates, belonged to cluster 1, 2, or 3 (P < 0.001). Thirteen additional genotypes were identified in isolates from both cattle and humans (four genotypes), from only cattle (seven genotypes), or from only humans (two genotypes). Two other markers previously associated with isolates from cattle or with clinical isolates showed similar associations with genotype groups within bovine isolates; the tir allele sp-1 and the Q933W allele were under- and overrepresented, respectively, among cluster 1 to …
