How The Court Got It Wrong In Woodford V. Ngo By Saying No To Simple Administrative Exhaustion Under The Plra, Karen M. Harkins Slocomb
San Diego Law Review
Congress has estimated that the number of people who have been sexually assaulted in America's prisons over the past twenty years tops one million. Some inmates are sexually assaulted by guards, and some by other inmates, facilitated by guards. The problem is so rampant that Congress enacted the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003. Though the State has a constitutional obligation to "provide humane conditions of confinement," sometimes it fails. To receive compensation for or relief from such harm, a prisoner must conform to the guidelines provided in the Prison Litigation Reform Act of 1995 (PLRA), which requires an inmate …
College Athletes’ Human Figure Drawings, Kaitlin Taggart
College Athletes’ Human Figure Drawings, Kaitlin Taggart
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
The demands of both lean and non-lean sports upon male athletes can lead to body image dissatisfaction and eating disorders. This study explored whether the Human Figure Drawing (HFD) is a valid method for assessing male college athletes’ body image. A total of 86 male athletes who were competitive on a lean (cross-country or wrestling) or non-lean (football or ice hockey) sport participated in the study. The score recorded on the Male Body Attitude Scale (MBAS) (Tylka, Bergeron, & Schwartz, 2005), a 24-question survey administered to each participant, focused specifically on assessing muscularity, body fat, and height attitudes of these …

Prevalence And Correlates Of Neural Tube Defect In South West Iran Retrospective Analysis, Ahmad Behrooz, Mohammad H. Gorjizadeh
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objective: In view of the large number of pregnancies complicated by neural tube defect (NTD) in Khuzestan, south west Iran, this study assesses the prevalence of NTD and its ecological and social factors. Methods: This is a retrospective study, based on medical documents using an analytic assessment of NTDs in pregnant women attending the Jundi Shapur University hospitals in Ahvaz from 21 March 2002 to 20 March 2004. Results: The total number of pregnant women was 13,262 and 56 pregnancies were complicated with NTD. A large number of the infants with NTDs were female (70%) and the most common anomaly …

Object-Relational Mapping As A Persistence Mechanism For Object-Oriented Applications, Jeffrey M. Barnes
Object-Relational Mapping As A Persistence Mechanism For Object-Oriented Applications, Jeffrey M. Barnes
Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects
Many object-oriented applications created today, especially Web applications, use relational databases for persistence. Often there is a straightforward correspondence between database tables on the one hand and application classes on the other. Application developers usually write a great deal of code to connect to and query the database, code which differs little from class to class and is often tedious to write. Moreover, the parallel class and table structures constitute a duplication of information, which requires duplication of work and increases the likelihood of errors. Ideally, we could automate this duplication, rendering it invisible to developers. This is the idea …
Biomarker Evaluation Using The Controls As A Reference Population, Ying Huang, Margaret Pepe
Biomarker Evaluation Using The Controls As A Reference Population, Ying Huang, Margaret Pepe
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
The classification accuracy of a continuous marker is typically evaluated with the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve. In this paper, we study an alternative conceptual framework, the "percentile value". In particular the controls only provide a reference distribution to standardize the marker. The analysis proceeds by analyzing the standardized marker only in cases. The approach is shown to be equivalent to ROC analysis. Advantages are that it provides a framework more familiar to biostatisticians and it opens up avenues for new statistical techniques in biomarker evaluation. We develop several new procedures based on this framework for comparing biomarkers and for comparing …
Pest Risk Assessment For Feral Pigs In Oregon, Bruce Coblentz, Cassie Bouska
Pest Risk Assessment For Feral Pigs In Oregon, Bruce Coblentz, Cassie Bouska
Other Publications in Wildlife Management
Feral pigs, wild boars, and hybrids either currently inhabit, or have been successfully introduced to every continent except Antarctica, and many oceanic islands. There are thirteen current known localities of feral pigs in Oregon (see Appendix A), distributed in various locations in southern and central Oregon. The biology of feral pigs indicates that these animals are capable of inhabiting virtually all available habitat west of the Cascade mountains, and the majority of the habitat east of the Cascades, with preference for riparian regions. Reports of feral pig biology and ecology in other regions in the United States, as well as …

Mother/Infant Interaction In The Context Of Four Maternal Risk Factors, Deirdre Ann Winder
Mother/Infant Interaction In The Context Of Four Maternal Risk Factors, Deirdre Ann Winder
Dissertations and Theses
Social-emotional skill acquisition in infancy can effect positive outcomes in all developmental domains as the child matures. Caregiver/infant interaction provides a critical context for positive social-emotional development in the infant (i.e., attachment, emotional regulation, communication). Within interaction, these three areas of infant social-emotional development are fostered by the dyadic relationship between caregiver and infant. However, infant skill acquisition within these areas of social-emotional development may be interrupted by risk factors in the caregiving environment. Four maternal risk factors (i.e., mental health, literacy level, age, income) associated with a negative impact on developmental outcome and on interaction were the focus of …
The Relationship Of Waist Size To Blood Pressure And Cholesterol Among College Students, Stephanie M. Miller
The Relationship Of Waist Size To Blood Pressure And Cholesterol Among College Students, Stephanie M. Miller
Senior Honors Theses
The relationship between food consumed and the resulting body size is not easy to understand. Considering the vast array of nutritional input, numerous hypotheses have been tested for connections among diet constituents and the shape of the human body. The purpose of this study was two fold: to determine the correlation between the level of blood cholesterol and waist size among college students and to determine the correlation between blood pressure and waist size among college students. Volunteers from an upper level Kinesiology class at Liberty University were measured around the waist, screened for blood pressure, and administered a cholesterol …

Expansion Of The Calcium Hypothesis Of Brain Aging And Alzheimer's Disease: Minding The Store, Olivier Thibault, John C. Gant, Philip W. Landfield
Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications
Evidence accumulated over more than two decades has implicated Ca2+ dysregulation in brain aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD), giving rise to the Ca2+ hypothesis of brain aging and dementia. Electrophysiological, imaging, and behavioral studies in hippocampal or cortical neurons of rodents and rabbits have revealed aging-related increases in the slow afterhyperpolarization, Ca2+ spikes and currents, Ca2+transients, and L-type voltage-gated Ca2+ channel (L-VGCC) activity. Several of these changes have been associated with age-related deficits in learning or memory. Consequently, one version of the Ca2+ hypothesis has been that increased L-VGCC activity drives many of the other Ca2+-related biomarkers of hippocampal aging. …

The Lipid Lowering Effect Of Plant Sterol Ester Capsules In Hypercholesterolemic Subjects, Robert V. Acuff, David J. Cai, Zhi Ping Dong, Doris Bell
ETSU Faculty Works
Background. Foods enriched with phytosterols have been proven to be an effective therapy to improve blood lipid profiles. However, none of the studies have investigated the efficacy in lipid lowering of plant sterol esters (PSE) in capsule form. The objective of this study is to determine if the plant sterol esters (PSE) in capsule form (1.3 grams of PSE/day) lowered plasma cholesterol levels and lipid ratios in free-living hypercholesterolemic subjects during a 4-week intervention period. Methods. Sixteen subjects participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, sequential study with a 4-week placebo phase followed by a 2-week wash-out period and a 4-week treatment …
The Relationship Between Nutritional Knowledge And Application, Enas Shakkour
The Relationship Between Nutritional Knowledge And Application, Enas Shakkour
Senior Honors Theses
The FDA has proposed a number of actions to address the problem of unhealthy eating behaviors. Among these recommendations is educating the consumer. Education, however, could only be effective if the people did indeed alter their dietary behavior. This thesis studied the effect that educating a consumer can make on the consumer’s diet. Twenty college students were selected randomly for the study. The subjects were ten females and ten males. The subjects were given a nutritional assessment to test their nutritional knowledge. The subjects were then placed in one of three groups depending on their test scores. The subjects were …

The Kugeria Women Water Project: A Mixed-Methods Evalutation Of A Women’S Micro-Initiative Project, Malinda Nanetté Hill-Schmidtke
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Advisor: John DeFrain
The Kugeria Women Group (KWG) of Murinduko, Kenya, founded in 1989, built an 11- kilometer water pipeline to provide potable water. Almost 20 years later, the pipeline is still providing water to over 300 families and is considered an example of a successful women’s micro-initiative. The two major goals of this dissertation were: 1) to investigate the organizational structures to determine which elements aided KWG in its successfully maintaining a water pipeline, and 2) to analyze KWG’s water consumption to ascertain if KWG stayed within its own pre-described regulations.
Result Mapping found the KWG’s success is an …
