The Information Seeking Behavior Of Today’S College Students, Doug Way
The Information Seeking Behavior Of Today’S College Students, Doug Way
Presentations
Today’s college students have grown up with the internet; they are tech-savvy and experienced at navigating the web. This leads many to assume students have the skills to perform research in today’s increasingly online world. This session will examine how and where college students search for information and how this behavior impacts their research. It will also consider how faculty can assist students and influence student behavior.
Health Literacy Levels Among Adult Support Group Members And The General Adult Public : A Focus Group Approach, Daniel R. Czech, June Alberto, A. Barry Joyner
Health Literacy Levels Among Adult Support Group Members And The General Adult Public : A Focus Group Approach, Daniel R. Czech, June Alberto, A. Barry Joyner
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Health literacy has been identified as lacking in 47% of Americans (The National Academies, 2004). While health literacy reports of studies conducted in the southern section of the United States are available (DeWalt et al., 2004; Kennen et al. 2005), this research team found limited research that provides health literacy levels of the southeast, rural Georgia population. The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine and compare health literacy of health-related support group members and non group members in southeast Georgia utilizing a focus group methodology developed by Kreuger (1994). After Institutional Review Board approval at a local university, …
Availability Cascades And Risk Regulation, Timur Kuran
Availability Cascades And Risk Regulation, Timur Kuran
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
An availability cascade is a self-reinforcing process of collective belief formation by which an expressed perception triggers a chain reaction that gives the perception increasing plausibility through its rising availability in public discourse. The driving mechanism involves a combination of informational and reputational motives: Individuals endorse the perception partly by learning from the apparent beliefs of others and partly by distorting their public responses in the interest of maintaining social acceptance. Availability entrepreneurs-- activists who manipulate the content of public discourse-strive to trigger availability cascades likely to advance their agendas. Their availability campaigns may yield social benefits, but sometimes they …

In order to assess the value of Doppler echocardiographic Tei index and B-Type natriuretic peptide (BNP) in evaluating the stenosis of coronary artery in patients with unstable angina and their relationship with myocardial ischemia. Ninety-two consecutive patients and 30 controls were included, all participants had underwent coronary angiography, according to the results, patients were divided into One-vessel disease group, Two-vessel disease group, Three-vessel disease group, Gensini Score were recorded. Echocardiography, neurohormonal analysis were performed. The results showed that Tei index and BNP were higher in patients with unstable coronary artery disease, they increased with the number of coronary artery stenosis, …
Lazy Preservation: Reconstructing Websites From The Web Infrastructure, Frank Mccown
Lazy Preservation: Reconstructing Websites From The Web Infrastructure, Frank Mccown
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Backup or preservation of websites is often not considered until after a catastrophic event has occurred. In the face of complete website loss, webmasters or concerned third parties have attempted to recover some of their websites from the Internet Archive. Still others have sought to retrieve missing resources from the caches of commercial search engines. Inspired by these post hoc reconstruction attempts, this dissertation introduces the concept of lazy preservation{ digital preservation performed as a result of the normal operations of the Web Infrastructure (web archives, search engines and caches). First, the Web Infrastructure (WI) is characterized by its preservation …
The Plasmodium Falciparum Chloroquine Resistance Transporter, Pfcrt, Mediates The Activity Of Chloroquine-Resistance Reversal Agents In The Malaria Parasite, Kristin Lane
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Chloroquine (CQ) resistant Plasmodium falciparum is a serious problem affecting 3.2 billion people in over 100 countries today. Most endemic malarious countries are among the poorest in the world and lack the resources to replace the inexpensive and highly effective CQ. CQ resistance (CQR) reversal agents are a potentially inexpensive solution to restoring CQ efficacy. CQR reversal agents are drugs that have little to no antimalarial activity alone, but in combination with CQ, they increase dmg accumulation in the parasite and enhance the sensitivity to CQ in CQR parasites. PfCRT is a putative transporter located on the parasite digestive vacuole …

Who Is To Shame? Narratives Of Neonaticide, Susan Ayres
Who Is To Shame? Narratives Of Neonaticide, Susan Ayres
Faculty Scholarship
In seventeenth-century England, single women who killed their newborns were believed to have acted to hide their shame. They were prosecuted under the 1624 Concealment Law and punished by death. This harsh response eventually evolved into a more humane and sympathetic one, as shown by the increasing number of acquittals in the late eighteenth century and by the sharp drop of prosecutions in the late nineteenth century. Then, in 1922, England passed the Infanticide Act, amended in 1938, which provided that a mother who killed her child would be prosecuted for manslaughter, not murder. Today, the great majority of women …

Connecticut Journal of International Law
Al-haji Sawaneh, a child living in Sierra Leone, was kidnapped and conscripted into a rebel group.2 Shortly thereafter, he became a member of the Small Boys Unit ("S.B.U.") of the rebel group, participating in a number of horrific crimes against civilians and Sierra Leone's government soldiers. Sawaneh was one of thousands of child soldiers in Sierra Leone who played a major role in a bloody, decade-long civil war that claimed over 75,000 lives.' By the age of twelve, Sawaneh skillfully wielded an AK-47, issued to him because it was lightweight and more manageable for a small boy.4 The BBC reports …
Legal Implications Of 'Safe Passage' Reconciling A Viable Palestinian State With Israel's Security Requirements, Justus Reid Weiner, Diane Morrison
Legal Implications Of 'Safe Passage' Reconciling A Viable Palestinian State With Israel's Security Requirements, Justus Reid Weiner, Diane Morrison
Connecticut Journal of International Law
specially following the unilateral Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip during the summer of 1995, legal scholars and policy makers have increasingly turned to the question of the viability of the future Palestinian state. Terms such as 'territorial contiguity,' 'territorial continuity,' 'territorial connectivity,' 'a viable state,' and 'safe passage' are commonly employed in references to the future state of Palestine, which will comprise two territorial areas. One area of the state will be in the Gaza Strip and the other will be in the West Bank. Approximately twenty miles of the Negev, the southern region of Israel, will separate the …
A Comparative Analysis Of The Tension Created By Disability Access And Historic Preservation Laws In The United States And England, Christopher Parkin
A Comparative Analysis Of The Tension Created By Disability Access And Historic Preservation Laws In The United States And England, Christopher Parkin
Connecticut Journal of International Law
What is more important: an unchanging image of Boston's Public Library and Old South Church or an elevator providing disabled passengers access to an underground subway station? In 2006, the First Circuit Court of Appeals was presented with this question when it was forced to balance historic preservation law and disability access law in Neighborhood Association of the Back Bay, Inc. v. Federal Transit Administration.' This case exemplifies the tension that exists between the preservation of historic structures that are open to the public and the obligation to make modifications to such structures and their surroundings to accommodate persons with …

Shari'ah. Islamic Law And Arab Business Ethics, Frederick V. Perry
Connecticut Journal of International Law
What is law, and what function does it have in our lives? Many people and many cultures answer those questions differently.' Ethics, among other things, are concerned with judging things to be good or bad, especially behavior.2 Islam and its teachings, particularly Islamic Law, as this article will attempt to describe, informs and encompasses all of the activities, mundane and spiritual of the devout Muslim, including how he or she views ethical responsibilities. The use of the term "law" as in "Islamic Law" does not necessarily imply national or state sanctioned, legislated statutes. A handful of countries rule themselves nearly …

Vitamin A and its metabolite retinoic acid (RA) are essential elements for normal lung development and the differentiation of lung epithelial cells. We previously showed that RA rapidly activated cyclic AMP response element-binding protein (CREB) in a nonclassical manner in normal human tracheobronchial epithelial (NHTBE) cells. In the present study, we further demonstrated that this nonclassical signaling of RA on the activation of CREB plays a critical role in regulating the expression of airway epithelial cell differentiation markers, the MUC2, MUC5AC, and MUC5B genes. We found that RA rapidly activates the protein kinase Calpha isozyme and transmits the activation signal …

Giving Voice To The Religious, Seow Hon Tan
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
The relevance of moral values endorsed by religious persons in public decision-making has often been debated. The issue comes to the fore again in relation to the debate on Section 377A of the Penal Code dealing with acts of gross indecency between males. With the flourishing of diverse viewpoints that is a natural consequence of a liberal democratic society, and with greater participation by an increasingly sophisticated citizenry online and in the media, particularly in a nation in which those without religious affiliations make up only 15 per cent of the population, the ground rules of public discourse must be …

Om-Based Video Shot Retrieval By One-To-One Matching, Yuxin Peng, Chong-Wah Ngo, Jianguo Xiao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper proposes a new approach for shot-based retrieval by optimal matching (OM), which provides an effective mechanism for the similarity measure and ranking of shots by one-to-one matching. In the proposed approach, a weighted bipartite graph is constructed to model the color similarity between two shots. Then OM based on Kuhn-Munkres algorithm is employed to compute the maximum weight of a constructed bipartite graph as the shot similarity value by one-to-one matching among frames. To improve the speed efficiency of OM, two improved algorithms are also proposed: bipartite graph construction based on subshots and bipartite graph construction based on …

User Generated Content (UGC) is re-shaping the way people watch video and TV, with millions of video producers and consumers. In particular, UGC sites are creating new viewing patterns and social interactions, empowering users to be more creative, and developing new business opportunities. To better understand the impact of UGC systems, we have analyzed YouTube, the world's largest UGC VoD system. Based on a large amount of data collected, we provide an in-depth study of YouTube and other similar UGC systems. In particular, we study the popularity life-cycle of videos, the intrinsic statistical properties of requests and their relationship with …

Sketchwizard: Wizard Of Oz Prototyping Of Pen-Based User Interfaces, Richard C. Davis, T. Scott Saponas, Michael Shilman, James A. Landay
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
SketchWizard allows designers to create Wizard of Oz prototypes of pen-based user interfaces in the early stages of design. In the past, designers have been inhibited from participating in the design of pen-based interfaces because of the inadequacy of paper prototypes and the difficulty of developing functional prototypes. In SketchWizard, designers and end users share a drawing canvas between two computers, allowing the designer to simulate the behavior of recognition or other technologies. Special editing features are provided to help designers respond quickly to end-user input. This paper describes the SketchWizard system and presents two evaluations of our approach. The …
