June Watanabe's Translation/Transformatin Of Japanese Nō In Contemporary Practice, Judy Halebsky Oct 2007

June Watanabe's Translation/Transformatin Of Japanese Nō In Contemporary Practice, Judy Halebsky

Collected Faculty Scholarship

This paper considers a 2004 performance of Nö Project II ‘Can’t’ is ‘Night,’ a collaboration of Japanese American dancer June Watanabe, Japanese nö master and Intangible Cultural Treasure of Japan Uchida Anshin, composer Pauline Oliveros, and poet Leslie Scalapino. The project, spearheaded by Watanabe, translated nö for a contemporary San Francisco audience, imbuing it with social and political meaning for California viewers. Watanabe translated nö’s internal concentration into a collaborative process she calls “being in the moment.” The performance became a way for collaborators and audience to examine values in art making and sociopolitical practice.

Thugs And Drugs: The Terrorists And Drug Networks Of The Islamic Movement Of Uzbekistan, Ian Nash

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Recent analyses of terrorist groups reveal their dependency on complex logistical, financial, and operational relationships with other groups. Advantaged by the technological advancements of the last two decades, many terrorist and criminal organizations are now linked through complicated networks. Therefore, experts dedicated to uncovering and unraveling terrorist strategy, can easily get lost in the scattered patterns of today’s terrorism. A web-like structure allows for flexible, though well-connected leadership, and widespread recruitment opportunity. One recent terrorist group that has benefited from network organization is the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU). The IMU was a formidable group because of its experienced and …

Back-Up Server For Computer Science Department, Victoria Gaylord

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Because Western Kentucky University does not maintain a back-up system for its departments, the Computer Science Department has implemented its own. Using Bacula software on a Unix server, files from faculty desktop computers and servers are backed up to a tape drive on a daily basis. The server is protected from outside threats with a carefully configured firewall script. This paper explains how both the firewall and the back-up software were implemented and how successful that implementation has been.

The Migration Of Forms: Bullet Time As Microgenre, Bob Rehak Oct 2007

The Migration Of Forms: Bullet Time As Microgenre, Bob Rehak

Film & Media Studies Faculty Works

Rehak considers the ways in which the film "The Matrix" "branded" bullet time both as technical process and stylistic convention, and discusses bullet time's ancestry in image experimentation of the 1980s and 1990s. In his analysis, Rehak uses the conceptual framework of the microgenre to explore the cultural lifespan of bullet time, treating it less as a singular special effect than a package of photographic and digital techniques whose fortunes were shaped by a complex interplay of technology, narrative and style. Rehak's goal is to shed light not just on bullet time, but on the changing behavior of visual texts …

Web 2.0 In Libraries: Assessing New Services, Jean Vollrath Oct 2007

Web 2.0 In Libraries: Assessing New Services, Jean Vollrath

The Southeastern Librarian

Each morning’s work at the Center for Creative Leadership library involves scanning the internet news sources for stories that affect company clients, particularly new business trends and innovations. Two such trends are Web 2.0 and the idea of “third place.” The term “third place” refers to an open, neutral, creative haven for social interaction and collaboration, such as a library or coffee shop. Web 2.0 refers to those new internet technologies that can be used to create virtual “third place” communities through synchronous and asynchronous communication. So it was not surprising to see a new column in the January 2007 …

Using Diffusion Of Innovation Concepts For Improved Program Evaluation, William G. Hubbard, Lorilee R. Sandmann Oct 2007

Using Diffusion Of Innovation Concepts For Improved Program Evaluation, William G. Hubbard, Lorilee R. Sandmann

Journal of Extension

Through the diffusion of innovations framework, Extension program planners, evaluators, and researchers can gain a better understanding of the reasons an educational program results in adoption or rejection of a particular practice. In addition to the information on impact of Extension programs available through traditional methods of analysis, this framework yields data on factors influencing adoption or rejection of practices. Such information is essential for understanding the absolute and relative importance of the information presented and the program experience. Survey and statistical methods and procedures can be developed to capture this information.

Preferred Information Delivery Methods Of North Carolina Forest Landowners, Robert E. Bardon, Dennis Hazel, Kevin Miller Oct 2007

Preferred Information Delivery Methods Of North Carolina Forest Landowners, Robert E. Bardon, Dennis Hazel, Kevin Miller

Journal of Extension

The choice of information delivery method used by an Extension educator may have serious consequences for program effectiveness. Some fear that using one information delivery method may alienate those who prefer another. Through a mail survey of forest landowners, the study reported here identified five distinct groups based on their information delivery method preferences. The study also identified associations between delivery method preferences and socio-demographics, land ownership, and management experience of landowners. Connecting these characteristics with landowner preferences for information delivery methods allows Extension educators to identify delivery methods that are most likely to be effective in reaching this audience.

Continuing Education Needs In The Last Green Valley: A Natural Resource, Land Use, & Community Design Needs Assessment, Susan P. Westa, C Benjamin Tyson, Stephen H. Broderick, Paula Stahl Oct 2007

Continuing Education Needs In The Last Green Valley: A Natural Resource, Land Use, & Community Design Needs Assessment, Susan P. Westa, C Benjamin Tyson, Stephen H. Broderick, Paula Stahl

Journal of Extension

A needs assessment survey was conducted by an Extension partnership program, the Green Valley Institute. The survey was designed to assess educational needs and interests relating to land use, community planning and design, and natural resources in a primarily rural region. Extension educators may be interested to see the strong across-the-board interest in learning more about these topics. As people gain a greater understanding of the importance of natural resources, the impacts of growth and the problems that occur when we don't protect our natural systems, the more they want to know and be involved in bringing about change.

Citizen Involvement In Water Resources Issues In New England, Julie Wawrzynek, Robert L. Mahler, Arthur J. Gold, Alyson Mccann

Journal of Extension

A survey determined citizen involvement and actions taken about water resource issues in New England. The major findings were: (1) 50% of citizens had changed their yard watering practices in the last few years; (2) 43% had changed their use of pesticides; and (3) 12% indicated that they were actively involved in an environmental protection group. To obtain additional water resources information 55% of respondents indicated they would read printed fact sheets, 43% would read newspaper articles, and 37% would watch a television program. Extension will use these data to increase citizen involvement in water quality issues.

Development And Impact Of An Extension Web Site, Jj Wiersma Oct 2007

Development And Impact Of An Extension Web Site, Jj Wiersma

Journal of Extension

The Small Grains Web site started in 1995 with the goal to create access to production information for Minnesota's wheat and barley producers. To evaluate the impact of Small Grains, a mail and online survey were conducted in 2003. Small Grains attained a sizeable audience. However, less than a quarter of the potential clientele knows of the Web site. Small Grains improved access to relevant information for 67% and 89% of the mail and online respondents, respectively. The increased access had a positive impact on the producers' production practices and outcomes.

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

The extent to which the phenotype of children comorbid for velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) differs from that of VCFS-only has not been studied. The sample consisted of 41 children (20 females) with VCFS, ranging in age from 6.5 years to 15.8 years. Eight children with VCFS met formal DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for autism based upon the ADI-R. These eight plus an additional nine participants met diagnostic criteria for an autistic spectrum disorder (VCFS + ASD). Ninety-four percent of the children with VCFS + ASD had a co-occurring psychiatric disorder while 60% of children with VCFS had …

Juvenile Justice: The Nathaniel Abraham Murder Case, Eugene Arthur Moore

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Once in a while, a case will come along that has such an enormous impact on the law that it is certain to draw attention. One such case was the Nathaniel Abraham murder case----a case involving the sentencing of a young eleven-year-old child in a system designed for older juvenile offenders, which demonstrated some of the novel and important issues facing the juvenile courts today. With the onset of such issues, the Juvenile Justice System has developed into a complex field of vital importance. Investing in the Juvenile Justice System allows us to invest in our future. Although frequently viewed …

Comparison Of Immune And Adverse Effects Induced By Adjuvac And Freund's Complete Adjuvant In New Zealand White Rabbits (Oryctolagus Cuniculus), Jenny G. Powers, Paul B. Nash, Jack C. Rhyan, Christi A. Yoder, Lowell A. Miller Oct 2007

Miller

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Though Freund's complete adjuvant effectively increases immune response to vaccines in various species, its potentially severe inflammatory effects have led many animal researchers to seek alternative immunological adjuvants. In a study of New Zealand white rabbits, the authors compared the immune and adverse effects of Freund's complete adjuvant with the effects of two formulations of AdjuVac, an immunological adjuvant previously developed by their group. ALL three adjuvants improved humoral immune response but also caused inflammation. Inflammatory reactions caused by AdjuVac, however, tended to be Less severe than those caused by Freund's complete adjuvant.

Availability Cascades And Risk Regulation, Cass R. Sunstein, Timur Kuran Oct 2007

Availability Cascades And Risk Regulation, Cass R. Sunstein, Timur Kuran

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

An availability cascade is a self-reinforcing process of collective belief formation by which an expressed perception triggers a chain reaction that gives the perception increasing plausibility through its rising availability in public discourse. The driving mechanism involves a combination of informational and reputational motives: Individuals endorse the perception partly by learning from the apparent beliefs of others and partly by distorting their public responses in the interest of maintaining social acceptance. Availability entrepreneurs-- activists who manipulate the content of public discourse-strive to trigger availability cascades likely to advance their agendas. Their availability campaigns may yield social benefits, but sometimes they …
