Or Best Offer: A Privacy Policy Negotiation Protocol, Daniel David Walker Jul 2007

Or Best Offer: A Privacy Policy Negotiation Protocol, Daniel David Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Users today are concerned about how their information is collected, stored and used by Internet sites. Privacy policy languages, such as the Platform for Privacy Preferences (P3P), allow websites to publish their privacy practices and policies in machine readable form. Currently, software agents designed to protect users' privacy follow a "take it or leave it" approach when evaluating these privacy policies. This approach is inflexible and gives the server ultimate control over the privacy of web transactions. Privacy policy negotiation is one approach to leveling the playing field by allowing a client to negotiate with a server to determine how …

Pipe Diagrams For Thompson's Group F, Aaron L. Peterson

Theses and Dissertations

We review the definition and standard description of Thompson's Group F. We define the set of pipe diagrams and show that this set forms a group isomorphic to F. We use pipe diagrams to prove two theorems about giving a minimal representation for an arbitrary element of F.

Development Of A Mevva Based Beryllium-7 Plasma Source, David K. Olson Jul 2007

Development Of A Mevva Based Beryllium-7 Plasma Source, David K. Olson

Theses and Dissertations

We have designed a new type of plasma gun ion source for a Malmberg-Penning trap based on Metal Vapor Vacuum Arc (MeVVA) ion source designs. Our primary intent with this MeVVA-type source is to create a confinable beryllium-7 (7-Be) plasma. 7-Be is a peculiar isotope due to its varying radioactive decay half-life in different electro-chemical configurations. It is also found in an unexpected abundance at high altitudes of the Earth's atmosphere. It is possible ioniziation affects the radioactivity of the isotope, partly explaining this discrepancy with atmospheric models. The short half-life of 7-Be requires us to replace the sample inside …

This paper discusses the development of an upper-level college course on Climate Change created as part of an interdisciplinary Honors Seminar Series. The course makes use of multimedia instructional techniques to examine the physical, economic, and political dynamics of climate change. The curriculum includes an appraisal of assorted global warming websites, computer-based simulations and analysis of relevant climate data, as well as a review of the literature and other media including documentaries such as An Inconvenient Truth. The so-called global warming debate subsidized by the fossil fuel industry also is discussed.

The Assessment Of The Degree Of Concordance Between The Observed Values And The Predicted Values Of A Mixed-Effect Model Using “Method Of Comparison” Techniques, William F. Mccarthy, Nan Guo Jul 2007

The Assessment Of The Degree Of Concordance Between The Observed Values And The Predicted Values Of A Mixed-Effect Model Using “Method Of Comparison” Techniques, William F. Mccarthy, Nan Guo

COBRA Preprint Series

In this paper, we present a methodology for determining the degree of concordance between observed and model-based predicted values of a mixed-effect model. In particular, we will compare the degree to which observed and model-based predicted values agree by using ‘method of comparison’ techniques. We will also present the results of the concordance correlation coefficient (CCC).

Reporting And Interpretation In Genome-Wide Association Studies, Jon Wakefield Jul 2007

Reporting And Interpretation In Genome-Wide Association Studies, Jon Wakefield

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

In the context of genome-wide association studies we critique a number of methods that have been suggested for flagging associations for further investigation. The p-value is by far the most commonly used measure, but requires careful calibration when the a priori probability of an association is small, and discards information by not considering the power associated with each test. The q-value is a frequentist method by which the false discovery rate (FDR) may be controlled. We advocate the use of the Bayes factor as a summary of the information in the data with respect to the comparison of the null …

Transient Storage As A Function Of Geomorphology, Discharge, And Permafrost Active Layer Conditions In Arctic Tundra Streams, Jay P. Zarnetske, Michael N. Gooseff, Troy R. Brosten, John H. Bradford, James P. Mcnamara, W. Breck Bowden Jul 2007

Transient Storage As A Function Of Geomorphology, Discharge, And Permafrost Active Layer Conditions In Arctic Tundra Streams, Jay P. Zarnetske, Michael N. Gooseff, Troy R. Brosten, John H. Bradford, James P. Mcnamara, W. Breck Bowden

CGISS Publications and Presentations

Transient storage of solutes in hyporheic zones or other slow-moving stream waters plays an important role in the biogeochemical processes of streams. While numerous studies have reported a wide range of parameter values from simulations of transient storage, little field work has been done to investigate the correlations between these parameters and shifts in surface and subsurface flow conditions. In this investigation we use the stream properties of the Arctic (namely, highly varied discharges, channel morphologies, and subchannel permafrost conditions) to isolate the effects of discharge, channel morphology, and potential size of the hyporheic zone on transient storage. We repeated …

A Modified Cluster-Weighted Approach To Nonlinear Time Series, Mark Ballatore Lyman Jul 2007

A Modified Cluster-Weighted Approach To Nonlinear Time Series, Mark Ballatore Lyman

Theses and Dissertations

In many applications involving data collected over time, it is important to get timely estimates and adjustments of the parameters associated with a dynamic model. When the dynamics of the model must be updated, time and computational simplicity are important issues. When the dynamic system is not linear the problem of adaptation and response to feedback are exacerbated. A linear approximation of the process at various levels or “states” may approximate the non-linear system. In this case the approximation is linear within a state and transitions from state to state over time. The transition probabilities are parametrized as a Markov …

Chateaubriand's René As A Philosophical Reaction To The Enlightenment And Early Romantic Sentiment, Christopher Martin Flood Jul 2007

Chateaubriand's René As A Philosophical Reaction To The Enlightenment And Early Romantic Sentiment, Christopher Martin Flood

Theses and Dissertations

For over 200 years “René&rqduo; Chateaubriand's short fictional interlude in his grand argument for the restoration of Christianity after the French Revolution, has been read as the founding text of the French Romantic movement. While this text did in fact serve to define many of the characteristics of French Romantic literature, simply labeling it as such is anachronistic and obscures the more profound philosophical and theological claims Chateaubriand was actually attempting to illustrate. After an examination of the discrepancy between the author's intentions and the general perception, this study will briefly consider some of the traditional readings of “René” specifically …

The Mechanical Problems In The Corpus Of Aristotle, Thomas Nelson Winter Jul 2007

The Mechanical Problems In The Corpus Of Aristotle, Thomas Nelson Winter

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

This is a translation of the Mechanical Problems from the TLG Greek text. That it survives in the corpus of Aristotle has been prima facie evidence that Aristotle was the author, although there are many problems with this attribution. At many places I found indications that the date of the work was apt for Aristotle. But eventually, I saw a connection in Vitruvius (as described in the brief essay included here as “Who Wrote the Mechanical Problems in the Corpus of Aristotle”) that led to a conviction of the author's true identity. To “cut to the chase,” I conclude that …

Survival Analysis With Large Dimensional Covariates: An Application In Microarray Studies, David A. Engler, Yi Li Jul 2007

Survival Analysis With Large Dimensional Covariates: An Application In Microarray Studies, David A. Engler, Yi Li

Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Use of microarray technology often leads to high-dimensional and low- sample size data settings. Over the past several years, a variety of novel approaches have been proposed for variable selection in this context. However, only a small number of these have been adapted for time-to-event data where censoring is present. Among standard variable selection methods shown both to have good predictive accuracy and to be computationally efficient is the elastic net penalization approach. In this paper, adaptation of the elastic net approach is presented for variable selection both under the Cox proportional hazards model and under an accelerated failure time …

Measurement Of The Shape Of The Boson Rapidity Distribution For Pp̅ → Z/ Γ* → ℯ+ℯ- + X Events Produced At √S Of 1.96 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration Jul 2007

Measurement Of The Shape Of The Boson Rapidity Distribution For Pp̅ → Z/ Γ* → ℯ+ℯ- + X Events Produced At √S Of 1.96 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present a measurement of the shape of the boson rapidity distribution forpp̅ → Z/ γ * → ℯ+ℯ- + X events at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The measurement is made for events with electron-positron mass 71<M ℯℯ < 111 GeV and uses 0.4 fb-1 of data collected at the Fermilab Tevatron collider with the D0 detector. This measurement significantly reduces the uncertainties on the rapidity distribution in the forward region compared with previous measurements. Predictions of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD are found to agree well with the data over the full rapidity range.

Mechanical Behavior Of Fuel Cell Membranes Under Humidity Cycles And Effect Of Swelling Anisotropy On The Fatigue Stresses, Ahmet Kusoglu, Anette M. Karlsson, Michael H. Santare, Simon Cleghorn, William B. Johnson Jul 2007

Mechanical Behavior Of Fuel Cell Membranes Under Humidity Cycles And Effect Of Swelling Anisotropy On The Fatigue Stresses, Ahmet Kusoglu, Anette M. Karlsson, Michael H. Santare, Simon Cleghorn, William B. Johnson

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The mechanical response of proton exchange membranes in a fuel cell assembly is investigated under humidity cycles at a constant temperature (85°C). The behavior of the membrane under hydration–dehydration cycles is simulated by imposing a humidity gradient from the cathode to the anode. Linear elastic, plastic constitutive behavior with isotropic hardening and temperature and humidity dependent material properties are utilized in the simulations for the membrane. The evolution of the stresses and plastic deformation during the humidity cycles are determined using finite element analysis for two clamping methods and various levels of swelling anisotropy. The membrane response strongly depends on …

Synthesis And Antiviral Evaluation Of Some 3'-Carboxymethyl-3'-Deoxyadenosine Derivatives, Houguang Shi Jul 2007

Synthesis And Antiviral Evaluation Of Some 3'-Carboxymethyl-3'-Deoxyadenosine Derivatives, Houguang Shi

Theses and Dissertations

3'-Carboxymethyl-3'-deoxyadenosine derivatives were prepared from 2'-O-TBDMS-3'-deoxy-3'-[(ethoxycarbonyl)methyl]adenosine (1) via simple and efficient procedures. Conversion of 1 to 5'-azido-2'-O-TBDMS-3', 5'-dideoxy -3'-[(ethoxycarbonyl) methyl] adenosine (4) was accomplished via a novel one-pot method employing 5'-activation (TosCl) followed by efficient nucleophilic displacement with tetramethylguanidinium azide. Compound 4 was converted to a 5'-[(N-methylcarbamoyl)amino] derivative (5) via one-pot reduction/acylation employing H2/Pd-C followed by treatment with p-nitrophenyl N-methylcarbamate. The latter step of this two-step process required an efficient source of p-nitrophenyl N-methylcarbamate, thus a highly efficient new method for preparing p-nitrophenyl N-alkylcarbamate was developed. N6-phenylcarbamoyl groups were introduced by treatment with phenylisocyanate, and an efficient new method for …

The Mid-Infrared Emission Of M87, Eric S. Perlman, R. E. Mason, Christopher Packham, N. A. Levenson, Moshe Elitzur, Justin J. Schaefer, Masatoshi Imanishi, William B. Sparks, James Radomski Jul 2007

The Mid-Infrared Emission Of M87, Eric S. Perlman, R. E. Mason, Christopher Packham, N. A. Levenson, Moshe Elitzur, Justin J. Schaefer, Masatoshi Imanishi, William B. Sparks, James Radomski

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We discuss Subaru and Spitzer Space Telescope imaging and spectroscopy of M87 in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) from 5 to 35 μm. These observations allow us to investigate mid-IR emission mechanisms in the core of M87 and to establish that the flaring, variable jet component HST-1 is not a major contributor to the mid-IR flux. The Spitzer data include a high signal-to-noise ratio 15-35 μm spectrum of the knot A/B complex in the jet, which is consistent with synchrotron emission. However, a synchrotron model cannot account for the observed nuclear spectrum, even when contributions from the jet, necessary due …

Transendothelial Migration Of Metastatic Cancer Under The Influence Of Cigarette Smoke Condensate, Daniel Opp Jul 2007

Transendothelial Migration Of Metastatic Cancer Under The Influence Of Cigarette Smoke Condensate, Daniel Opp

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cigarette smoke's influence on cancer has primarily been a subject of epidemilogic and tumorigenic studies. There have been no proper investigations with interests focused on how cigarette smoke affects the cellular mechanics of metastasis. Gathering an understanding of how smoke influences metastatic invasion could be vital in regulating or possibly eliminatings cancer's ability to initiate new tumor growth sites. This project focuses on cigarette smoke's influence on cellular mechanics of endothelial cells, and the invasive potential of cancer against a fully active endothelium. It is already known that cigarette smoke has a carcinogenic effect, but it is hypothesized that the …

A Comparative Simulation Study Of Robust Estimators Of Standard Errors, Natalie Johnson Jul 2007

A Comparative Simulation Study Of Robust Estimators Of Standard Errors, Natalie Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The estimation of standard errors is essential to statistical inference. Statistical variability is inherent within data, but is usually of secondary interest; still, some options exist to deal with this variability. One approach is to carefully model the covariance structure. Another approach is robust estimation. In this approach, the covariance structure is estimated from the data. White (1980) introduced a biased, but consistent, robust estimator. Long et al. (2000) added an adjustment factor to White's estimator to remove the bias of the original estimator. Through the use of simulations, this project compares restricted maximum likelihood (REML) with four robust estimation …

The Smallest Base And Precious Metal Deposits In The World: Vapor Transport And Deposition Of Co-Cu-Sn-Ag Alloys In Vesicles, Elizabeth Adele Outdoor Hunter Jul 2007

The Smallest Base And Precious Metal Deposits In The World: Vapor Transport And Deposition Of Co-Cu-Sn-Ag Alloys In Vesicles, Elizabeth Adele Outdoor Hunter

Theses and Dissertations

Metallic bronze-Co-Ag alloys ranging from1-90 µm have been discovered in bomb and lava vesicles from the mafic volcanoes of Kilauea in Hawaii and Vesuvius, Stromboli and Etna in Italy. It is inferred that the metals for these alloys were transported (in part) as chloride complexes, and that the metal ratios in the alloys may be a function of S/Cl. Alloy compositions in each system are extremely heterogeneous with Co concentrations from 1% to 94%, Cu from 2% to 89%, Sn from 1% to 22% and Ag from 0.5% to 42%. Maximum abundances (in wt%) of other trace or minor elements …
