Soft Surface Roll Mechanics Parameters For Light Vehicle Rollover Accident Reconstruction, Kevin Claude Henry Jul 2007

Soft Surface Roll Mechanics Parameters For Light Vehicle Rollover Accident Reconstruction, Kevin Claude Henry

Theses and Dissertations

Light vehicle rollover accidents on soft surfaces can be modeled assuming constant drag with linear motion equations and other engineering principles. The concept of using segment average results to evaluate roll mechanics parameters throughout a roll sequence, and specifically, segment duration to evaluate vehicle trajectory between ground impacts is developed. The trajectory model is presented, explained and compared to values obtained by analyzing digital video of rollover crash tests. Detailed film analysis procedures are developed to obtain data from rollover crash tests that are not otherwise documented. Elevation of the center of gravity of vehicles is obtained where instrumentation does …

Reliability Of Pre-Service Teachers Coding Of Teaching Videos Using Video-Annotation Tools, Brigham R. Dye Jul 2007

Reliability Of Pre-Service Teachers Coding Of Teaching Videos Using Video-Annotation Tools, Brigham R. Dye

Theses and Dissertations

Teacher education programs that aspire to helping pre-service teachers develop expertise must help students engage in deliberate practice along dimensions of teaching expertise. However, field teaching experiences often lack the quantity and quality of feedback that is needed to help students engage in meaningful teaching practice. The limited availability of supervising teachers makes it difficult to personally observe and evaluate each student teacher's field teaching performances. Furthermore, when a supervising teacher debriefs such an observation, the supervising teacher and student may struggle to communicate meaningfully about the teaching performance. This is because the student teacher and supervisor often have very …

Development Of Chemomechanical Functionalization And Nanografting On Silicon Surfaces, Michael Vernon Lee Jul 2007

Development Of Chemomechanical Functionalization And Nanografting On Silicon Surfaces, Michael Vernon Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Progress in chemomechanical functionalization was made by investigating the binding of molecules and surface coverage on the silicon surface, demonstrating functionalization of silicon with gases by chemomechanical means, analyzing atomic force microscopy probe tip wear in atomic force microscopy (AFM) chemomechanical nanografting, combining chemomechanical functionalization and nanografting to pattern silicon with an atomic force microscope, and extending chemomechanical nanografting to silicon dioxide. Molecular mechanics of alkenes and alkynes bound to Si(001)-2x1 as a model of chemomechanically functionalized surfaces indicated that complete coverage is energetically favorable and becomes more favorable for longer chain species. Scribing a silicon surface in the presence …

Seismic And Well Log Attribute Analysis Of The Jurassic Entrada/Curtis Interval Within The North Hill Creek 3d Seismic Survey, Uinta Basin, Utah, A Case History, Ryan J. Oneal Jul 2007

Seismic And Well Log Attribute Analysis Of The Jurassic Entrada/Curtis Interval Within The North Hill Creek 3d Seismic Survey, Uinta Basin, Utah, A Case History, Ryan J. Oneal

Theses and Dissertations

3D seismic attribute analysis of the Jurassic Entrada/Curtis interval within the North Hill Creek (NHC) survey has been useful in delineating reservoir quality eolian-influenced dune complexes. Amplitude, average reflection strength and spectral decomposition appear to be most useful in locating reservoir quality dune complexes, outlining their geometry and possibly displaying lateral changes in thickness. Cross sectional views displaying toplap features likely indicate an unconformity between Entrada clinoforms below and Curtis planar beds above. This relationship may aid the explorationist in discovering this important seismic interval. Seismic and well log attribute values were cross plotted and have revealed associations between these …

Quantum Analysis Of A Linear Dc Squid Mechanical Displacement Detector, M. P. Blencowe, E. Buks Jul 2007

Quantum Analysis Of A Linear Dc Squid Mechanical Displacement Detector, M. P. Blencowe, E. Buks

Dartmouth Scholarship

We provide a quantum analysis of a dc SQUID mechanical displacement detector within the subcritical Josephson current regime. A segment of the SQUID loop forms the mechanical resonator and motion of the latter is transduced inductively through changes in the flux threading the loop. Expressions are derived for the detector signal response and noise, which are used to evaluate the position and force detection sensitivity. We also investigate cooling of the mechanical resonator due to detector back reaction.

Climate Change, Energy Demand And Market Power In A General Equilibrium Model Of The World Economy, Roberto Roson, Francesco Bosello, Enrica De Cian Jul 2007

Climate Change, Energy Demand And Market Power In A General Equilibrium Model Of The World Economy, Roberto Roson, Francesco Bosello, Enrica De Cian

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Future energy demand will be affected by changes in prices and income, but also by other factors, like temperature levels. This paper draws upon an econometric study, disentangling the contribution of temperature in the determination of the annual regional demand for energy goods. Combining estimates of temperature elasticities with scenarios of future climate change, it is possible to assess variations in energy demand induced (directly) by the global warming. We use this information to simulate a change in the demand structure of households in a CGE model of the world economy, in a set of assessment exercises. The changing demand …

Topoisomerase Ii-Drug Interaction Domains: Identification Of Substituents On Etoposide That Interact With The Enzyme, Amy M. Wilstermann, Ryan P. Bender, Murrell Godfrey, Sungjo Choi, Clemens Anklin, David B. Berkowitz, Neil Osheroff, David E. Graves

David Berkowitz Publications

Etoposide is one of the most successful chemotherapeutic agents used for the treatment of human cancers. The drug kills cells by inhibiting the ability of topoisomerase II to ligate nucleic acids that it cleaves during the double-stranded DNA passage reaction. Etoposide is composed of a polycyclic ring system (rings A–D), a glycosidic moiety at the C4 position, and a pendant ring (E–ring) at the C1 position. Although drug-enzyme contacts, as opposed to drug-DNA interactions, mediate the entry of etoposide into the topoisomerase II-drug-DNA complex, the substituents on etoposide that interact with the enzyme have not been identified. Therefore, saturation transfer …

Transmission Dynamics Of Avian Influenza Among Poultry With And Without Vaccination, Qiao Liang Jul 2007

Transmission Dynamics Of Avian Influenza Among Poultry With And Without Vaccination, Qiao Liang

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

The continuing avian influenza (AI) out break that began in late 2003 and early 2004 has been disastrous for the poultry industry worldwide. It has resulted in severe socio-economic damage, and it has raised serious concerns for general public health. In this research, we use mathematics to analyze transmission dynamics of AI among poultry. We use a status-based approach to construct systems of differential equations to describe virus transmission dynamics. We develop theoretical means to eradicate the spread of the disease, and we calculate the size of healthy and infected populations during an AI outbreak, and the final population size …

Synthesis Of Resveratrol And Its Analogs, Phase-Transfer Catalyzed Asymmetric Glycolate Aldol Reaction, And Total Synthesis Of 8,9-Methylamido-Geldanamycin, Jing Liu

Theses and Dissertations

The phytoalexin resveratrol and its acetyl analogs have been made using a decarbonylative Heck reaction. The acid chloride derived from 3,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid was coupled with suitable protected 4-hydroxystyrene in the presence of palladium acetate and N,N-bis-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-4,5-dihydro imidazolium chloride to give the substituted stilbene in good yield as the key step. Human HL-60 cell assays showed the 4'-acetyl resveratrol variant improved activity (ED50 17 μM) relative to resveratrol (24 μM). Cinchona phase-transfer catalysts (PTC) were developed for glycolate aldol reactions to give differentially protected 1,2-diol products. Silyl enol ether of diphenylmethoxy-2,5-dimethoxyacetophenone reacted to generate benzhydryl-protected products. O-Allyl trifluorobenzyl cinchonium hydrodifluoride (20 …

Microfacies Analysis, Sedimentary Petrology, And Reservoir Characterization Of The Sinbad Limestone Based Upon Surface Exposures In The San Rafael Swell, Utah, Caleb R. Osborn

Theses and Dissertations

The Lower Triassic Sinbad Limestone Member of the Moenkopi Formation has produced minor amounts of oil in the Grassy Trail Creek field near Green River, Utah and is present below much of central Utah including the recently discovered Covenant field. Superb outcrops of this thin (15 m), mixed carbonate-silicilastic unit in the San Rafael Swell permit detailed analysis of its vertical and lateral reservoir heterogeneity. Vertically, the Sinbad Limestone comprises three facies associations: (A) a basal storm-dominated, well-circulated skeletal-oolitic-peloidal limestone association, (B) a storm-dominated, poorly-circulated hummocky cross-stratified siliciclastic/peloidal association, and (C) a capping peritidal cross-bedded oolitic dolograinstone association. Eleven microfacies …

Specification Of Non-Functional Requirements For Contract Specification In The Ngoss Framework For Quality Management And Product Evaluation, Manooch Amoozdeh, Nektarios Georgalas, Xiaoqing Frank Liu Jul 2007

Specification Of Non-Functional Requirements For Contract Specification In The Ngoss Framework For Quality Management And Product Evaluation, Manooch Amoozdeh, Nektarios Georgalas, Xiaoqing Frank Liu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The community of operation support systems (OSS) for telecom applications defined a set of fundamental principles, processes, and architectures for developing the next generation OSS through the TeleManagement Forum TMF. At the heart of NGOSS lies the notion of a "contract" which embodies the specification of services offered by an OSS component for quality management and product evaluation. However, TMF does not provide any method (or process) for specification of the non-functional part in the NGOSS contract specification. In this paper, we develop a systematic approach for specifying non-functional requirements of telecom OSS applications for contracts in the NGOSS framework …

Improving Pediatric Cardiology Consultation Methods By Introducing Digital Interactive 3-D Heart Models: A Proof Of Concept Study, Adam Verigan Jul 2007

Improving Pediatric Cardiology Consultation Methods By Introducing Digital Interactive 3-D Heart Models: A Proof Of Concept Study, Adam Verigan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of a pediatric cardiology consultation is to inform, or educate, the patient and family of all aspects surrounding a certain congenital heart defect. Consultation education methods and materials may include verbal descriptions, two-dimensional (2-D) heart diagrams, and take-home pamphlets. Because the human heart is a complex three-dimensional (3-D) object, the problem lies within the clarity to which these methods are performed by the doctors and understood by the patients and families. Therefore, during a consultation the cardiologist must a) possess the ability to describe a defect visually as well as verbally and b) ensure that the patient and …

Particle Filter Based Mosaicking For Forest Fire Tracking, Justin Mathew Bradley Jul 2007

Particle Filter Based Mosaicking For Forest Fire Tracking, Justin Mathew Bradley

Theses and Dissertations

Using autonomous miniature air vehicles (MAVs) is a cost-effective, simple method for collecting data about the size, shape, and location characteristics of a forest fire. However, noise in measurements used to compute pose (location and attitude) of the on-board camera leads to significant errors in the processing of collected video data. Typical methods using MAVs to track fires attempt to find single geolocation estimates and filter that estimate with subsequent observations. While this is an effective method of resolving the noise to achieve a better geolocation estimate, it reduces a fire to a single point or small set of points. …

The Minimum Rank Problem Over Finite Fields, Jason Nicholas Grout Jul 2007

The Minimum Rank Problem Over Finite Fields, Jason Nicholas Grout

Theses and Dissertations

We have two main results. Our first main result is a sharp bound for the number of vertices in a minimal forbidden subgraph for the graphs having minimum rank at most 3 over the finite field of order 2. We also list all 62 such minimal forbidden subgraphs and show that many of these are minimal forbidden subgraphs for any field. Our second main result is a structural characterization of all graphs having minimum rank at most k for any k over any finite field. This characterization leads to a very strong connection to projective geometry and we apply projective …

Constraints On A New Post-General Relativity Cosmological Parameter, Robert Caldwell, Asantha Cooray, Alessandro Melchiorri Jul 2007

Constraints On A New Post-General Relativity Cosmological Parameter, Robert Caldwell, Asantha Cooray, Alessandro Melchiorri

Dartmouth Scholarship

A new cosmological variable is introduced to characterize the degree of departure from Einstein’s general relativity with a cosmological constant. The new parameter, ϖ, is the cosmological analog of γ, the parametrized post-Newtonian variable which measures the amount of spacetime curvature per unit mass. In the cosmological context, ϖ measures the difference between the Newtonian and longitudinal potentials in response to the same matter sources, as occurs in certain scalar-tensor theories of gravity. Equivalently, ϖ measures the scalar shear fluctuation in a dark-energy component. In the context of a vanilla, cosmological constant-dominated universe, a nonzero ϖ signals a departure from …

The Existence Of Maximum Likelihood Estimates For The Binary Response Logistic Regression Model, William F. Mccarthy Jul 2007

The Existence Of Maximum Likelihood Estimates For The Binary Response Logistic Regression Model, William F. Mccarthy

COBRA Preprint Series

The existence of maximum likelihood estimates for the binary response logistic regression model depends on the configuration of the data points in your data set. There are three mutually exclusive and exhaustive categories for the configuration of data points in a data set: Complete Separation, Quasi-Complete Separation, and Overlap. For this paper, a binary response logistic regression model is considered. A 2 x 2 tabular presentation of the data set to be modeled is provided for each of the three categories mentioned above. In addition, the paper will present an example of a data set whose data points have a …
