Self-Efficacy And Health Value Among Undergraduates Following A Lifetime Fitness Course, Heather M. Brown
Self-Efficacy And Health Value Among Undergraduates Following A Lifetime Fitness Course, Heather M. Brown
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The question of whether perceived self-efficacy for exercise and health value, respectively, varied as a function of gender and exercise stage of change was the focus of this study. An archival data set was used. Participants were 190 college students who completed a demographic questionnaire, the Exercise Stage of Change Questionnaire, the Rokeach Values Survey, and the Self-Efficacy for Exercise questionnaire before and after completing a lifetime fitness course. Two 2-factor analyses of covariance were conducted for each dependent variable, self-efficacy and health value. Gender and exercise stage of change were the independent variables. Exercise stage of change was divided …

Reduced uterine perfusion initiated in late gestation in the rat results in intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and development of hypertension by 4 wk of age. We hypothesize that the renin angiotensin system (RAS), a regulatory system important in the long-term control of blood pressure, may be programmed by placental insufficiency and may contribute to the etiology of IUGR hypertension. We previously reported that RAS blockade abolished hypertension in adult IUGR offspring; however, the mechanisms responsible for the early phase of hypertension are unresolved. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine RAS involvement in early programmed hypertension and to …

M Solutions Good, M-1 Solutions Better, Luc Longpre, William Gasarch, G. W. Walster, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
One of the main objectives of theoretical research in computational complexity and feasibility is to explain experimentally observed difference in complexity.
Empirical evidence shows that the more solutions a system of equations has, the more difficult it is to solve it. Similarly, the more global maxima a continuous function has, the more difficult it is to locate them. Until now, these empirical facts have been only partially formalized: namely, it has been shown that problems with two or more solutions are more difficult to solve than problems with exactly one solution. In this paper, we extend this result and show …

Using Patterns And Composite Propositions To Automate The Generation Of Complex Ltl, Salamah Salamah, Ann Q. Gates, Vladik Kreinovich, Steve Roach
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Property classifications and patterns, i.e., high-level abstractions that describe common behavior, have been used to assist practitioners in specifying properties. The Specification Pattern System (SPS) provides descriptions of a collection of patterns. Each pattern is associated with a scope that defines the extent of program execution over which a property pattern is considered. Based on a selected pattern, SPS provides a specification for each type of scope in multiple formal languages including Linear Temporal Logic (LTL). The (Prospec) tool extends SPS by introducing the notion of Composite Propositions (CP), which are classifications for defining sequential and concurrent behavior to represent …
Static Space-Times Naturally Lead To Quasi-Pseudometrics, Hans-Peter A. Kuenzi, Vladik Kreinovich
Static Space-Times Naturally Lead To Quasi-Pseudometrics, Hans-Peter A. Kuenzi, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
The standard 4-dimensional Minkowski space-time of special relativity is based on the 3-dimensional Euclidean metric. In 1967, H.~Busemann showed that similar static space-time models can be based on an arbitrary metric space. In this paper, we search for the broadest possible generalization of a metric under which a construction of a static space-time leads to a physically reasonable space-time model. It turns out that this broadest possible generalization is related to the known notion of a quasi-pseudometric.

Mind-Matter For Animals Matters: Science And The Denial Of Animal Consciousness, Estiva Reus, David Olivier
Mind-Matter For Animals Matters: Science And The Denial Of Animal Consciousness, Estiva Reus, David Olivier
Between the Species
Animal people are usually confident that Cartesianism is something of the past and that modern science clearly establishes that animals are sentient beings. But actually the scientific status of sentience is anything but firmly established. Not only is the subjective point of view absent from current science; it is precluded by construction from our fundamental realms of knowledge. Physics — the mother-science once we reject Cartesian dualism — is currently unable to include sentience in its account of the world. A large part of the philosophy of mind describes a mindless mind, from which subjectivity — feeling, qualia — has …

Instantaneous Spectral Analysis: Time-Frequency Mapping Via Wavelet Matching With Application To Contaminated-Site Characterization By 3d Gpr, John H. Bradford, Yafei Wu
Instantaneous Spectral Analysis: Time-Frequency Mapping Via Wavelet Matching With Application To Contaminated-Site Characterization By 3d Gpr, John H. Bradford, Yafei Wu
CGISS Publications and Presentations
Spectral decomposition, by which a time series is transformed from the 1D time/amplitude domain to the 2D time/spectrum domain, has become a popular and useful tool in seismic exploration for hydrocarbons. The windowed, or short-time Fourier transform (STFT) was one early approach to computing the time-frequency (t-f) distribution. This method relies on the user selecting a fixed time window, then computing the Fourier spectrum within the time window while sliding the window along the length of the trace. The primary limitation of the STFT is the fixed window which prevents either time localization of high frequency components (if …

This document is intended to be a practical report addressing groundwater modeling in the U.S. Department of Energy’s nuclear weapons complex that will permit community organizations to more effectively oversee and understand DOE environmental cleanup actions. The nuclear weapons program is distributed among 13 major facilities in 10 states and dozens of smaller facilities. The concept here is to focus on the groundwater modeling activities in some of the cleanup decisions and to suggest how members of the public can ask questions to help them understand the end results.

A Fixed Point Theorem For The Infinite-Dimensional Simplex, Douglas Rizzolo '08, Francis E. Su
A Fixed Point Theorem For The Infinite-Dimensional Simplex, Douglas Rizzolo '08, Francis E. Su
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
We define the infinite-dimensional simplex to be the closure of the convex hull of the standard basis vectors in R∞, and prove that this space has the fixed point property: any continuous function from the space into itself has a fixed point. Our proof is constructive, in the sense that it can be used to find an approximate fixed point; the proof relies on elementary analysis and Sperner's lemma. The fixed point theorem is shown to imply Schauder's fixed point theorem on infinite-dimensional compact convex subsets of normed spaces.
Florida’S Non-Native Avifauna, Michael L. Avery, Michael P. Moulton
Florida’S Non-Native Avifauna, Michael L. Avery, Michael P. Moulton
Managing Vertebrate Invasive Species
Florida has a mild climate, diverse natural habitats, and a growing, mobile human population. Florida also hosts thousands of species of introduced plants, fish, and wildlife. A recent compilation lists 196 non-native bird species, comprising 15 orders, which have occurred in Florida. The list includes 72 species of parrots and parakeets (psittaciformes), 51 passerines, and 22 species of waterfowl (anseriformes). First sightings of newly introduced bird species in Florida increased rapidly through the 1980s, but numbers of new species detected appear to have subsided since then. Sources of introductions are often not reported, but of those that are known, most …

Managing Starlings In Australia – Can Drc-1339 Be The Answer?, Tina Bentz, Steven Lapidge, David Dall, Ronald G. Sinclair
Managing Vertebrate Invasive Species
European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) are one of the most abundant and widespread bird species on earth. Introduced to Australia in the late 1850s, their highly adaptive ecology has enabled them to become a major pest. Concerns include public health and safety, economic impacts, detrimental environmental effects, and bird strikes at airports. Unfortunately current Australian control methods are ineffective and more efficacious, humane methods need to be developed. A feasibility study was undertaken of the likely risks/benefits of avicide DRC 1339 (3-chloro-4-methylbenzenamine hydrochloride) in Australia. This included a risk-analysis, a multi-industry survey and non-toxic bait trials to assess target-specificity. …

Invasive Rats And Bubonic Plague In Northwest Uganda, Jeff N. Borchert, Jeff J. Mach, Timothy J. Linder, Asaph Ogen-Odoi [Deceased, In Memoriam], Santos Angualia
Managing Vertebrate Invasive Species
Major introductions of roof rats (Rattus rattus) likely occurred in the ports of East Africa during the Third Plague Pandemic in the late 1800’s. Transport via trains, boats, and trucking likely introduced this species to inland areas of East Africa, ultimately including Northwest Uganda. Historic plague outbreaks occurred during the early part of the 20th century and continue to cause a human disease burden in the West Nile region of NW Uganda via the bubonic, septicemic, and pneumonic forms. Four field sites in this area were trapped to determine the rodent species composition in commensal and peridomestic areas …
Island Biosecurity As A Pest Management Tactic In New Zealand, Keith Broome
Island Biosecurity As A Pest Management Tactic In New Zealand, Keith Broome
Managing Vertebrate Invasive Species
New Zealand is an archipelago with many islands of conservation significance, none of which has the full suite of invasive vertebrate pests found on mainland New Zealand. Managing invasive species on New Zealand islands involves prevention of pests establishing and controlling or extirpating those already there. Prevention measures, referred to as island biosecurity, focuses on the three major pathways for pests to arrive: deliberate release, accidental release and swimming. Managing deliberate release is largely reactive but does have opportunities for prevention depending on the motivation of offenders. Managing accidental release is where most proactive work is done by Department of …
The Role Of Early Detection And Rapid Response In Thwarting Amphibian And Reptile Introductions In Floridalorida, Todd S. Campbell
The Role Of Early Detection And Rapid Response In Thwarting Amphibian And Reptile Introductions In Floridalorida, Todd S. Campbell
Managing Vertebrate Invasive Species
Prevention is the best policy for dealing with introduced species. However, biologists often spend an inordinate amount of time studying their spread and impacts rather than focusing on what should be done to thwart their establishment in the first place. Amphibian and reptile introductions are reaching epidemic proportions in Florida, largely due to irresponsible behavior by pet owners and the pet industry, but also due to ineffective preventive policies and actions. Prevention of additional amphibian and reptile introductions in Florida will require a comprehensive approach involving legal restrictions of certain problematic species, a massive public education effort, and a well-funded …
