Formation Of Molecular Hydrogen On Amorphous Silicate Surfaces, Gianfranco Vidali, Ling Li, E. Congiu, S. Swords Sep 2007

Formation Of Molecular Hydrogen On Amorphous Silicate Surfaces, Gianfranco Vidali, Ling Li, E. Congiu, S. Swords

Physics - All Scholarship

Experimental results on the formation of molecular hydrogen on amorphous silicate surfaces are presented and analyzed using a rate equation model. The energy barriers for the relevant diffusion and desorption processes are obtained. They turn out to be significantly higher than those obtained for polycrystalline silicates, demonstrating the importance of grain morphology. Using these barriers we evaluate the efficiency of molecular hydrogen formation on amorphous silicate grains under interstellar conditions. It is found that unlike polycrystalline silicates, amorphous silicate grains are efficient catalysts of H_2 formation in diffuse interstellar clouds.

A Better Definition Of The Kilogram, Ronald F. Fox, Theodore P. Hill Sep 2007

A Better Definition Of The Kilogram, Ronald F. Fox, Theodore P. Hill

Research Scholars in Residence

Fixing the value of Avogadro's constant, the number of atoms in 12 grams of carbon-12, at exactly 844468863 would imply that one gram is the mass of exactly 18x140744813 carbon-12 atoms. This new definition of the gram, and thereby also the kilogram, is precise, elegant and unchanging in time, unlike the current 118-year-old artifact kilogram in Paris and the proposed experimental definitions of the kilogram using man-made silicon spheres or the watt balance apparatus.

Benford’S Law In Image Processing, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Greg L. Heileman, Fernando Perez-Gonzalez

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We present a generalization of Benford’s law for the first significant digit. This generalization is based on keeping two terms of the Fourier expansion of the probability density function of the data in the modular logarithmic domain. We prove that images in the Discrete Cosine Transform domain closely follow this generalization. We use this property to propose an application in image steganalysis, namely, detecting that a given image carries a hidden message.

The Methods for Improving Reproductive Health in Africa (MIRA) trial is a recently completed randomized trial that investigated the effect of diaphragm and lubricant gel use in reducing HIV infection among susceptible women. 5,045 women were randomly assigned to either the active treatment arm or not. Additionally, all subjects in both arms received intensive condom counselling and provision, the "gold standard" HIV prevention barrier method. There was much lower reported condom use in the intervention arm than in the control arm, making it difficult to answer important public health questions based solely on the intention-to-treat analysis. We adapt an analysis …

Modelling Computational Requirements Of Mobile Robotic Systems Using Zones And Processing Windows, Ala' Qadi, Steve Goddard, Jiangyang Huang, Shane Farritor Sep 2007

Modelling Computational Requirements Of Mobile Robotic Systems Using Zones And Processing Windows, Ala' Qadi, Steve Goddard, Jiangyang Huang, Shane Farritor

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Mobile robotic systems must sense constraints imposed by a dynamically changing environment and predictably react to those changes in real-time. Complexity arises in mobile robotic systems because the computing platform travels through the environment with which the system is interacting. These systems have spatio-temporal requirements in the sense that correct behavior is defined in terms of both space and time. The focus of this paper is mobile robotic platforms that must sense their environment and avoid obstacles as they navigate from one point to another. We present a design and analysis methodology for these platforms that integrates spatio-temporal attributes with …

Gamma-ray bursts are one of the most powerful explosions in the universe and have been detected out to distances of almost 13 billion light years. The exact origin of these energetic explosions is still unknown but the resulting huge release of energy is thought to create a highly relativistic jet of material and a power-law distribution of electrons. There are several theories describing the origin of the prompt GRB emission that currently cannot be distinguished. Measurements of the linear polarization would provide unique and important constraints on the mechanisms thought to drive these powerful explosions. We present the design of …

A Short Constructive Proof That Nonsingular Flows Only Exist On Manifolds Of Zero Euler Characteristic, William Basener Sep 2007

A Short Constructive Proof That Nonsingular Flows Only Exist On Manifolds Of Zero Euler Characteristic, William Basener

Articles

It is a well-known result that a closed manifold that admits a nonsingular flow (ie a flow without fixed points) only if its Euler Characteristic is zero. We provide a short proof of this by constructing a cell complex on the ambient manifold that is induced by the flow and showing that this complex has zero Euler Characteristic. We use the method of a global transverse disk with the hope that this method will be useful in studying global topological properties of nonsingular flows.

Constraining F(R) Gravity As A Scalar-Tensor Theory, Thomas Faulkner, Max Tegmark, Emory F. Bunn, Yi Mao Sep 2007

Constraining F(R) Gravity As A Scalar-Tensor Theory, Thomas Faulkner, Max Tegmark, Emory F. Bunn, Yi Mao

Physics Faculty Publications

We search for viable f(R) theories of gravity, making use of the equivalence between such theories and scalar-tensor gravity. We find that models can be made consistent with solar system constraints either by giving the scalar a high mass or by exploiting the so-called chameleon effect. However, in both cases, it appears likely that any late-time cosmic acceleration will be observationally indistinguishable from acceleration caused by a cosmological constant. We also explore further observational constraints from, e.g., big bang nucleosynthesis and inflation.

Second And Higher-Order Quasinormal Modes In Binary Black Hole Mergers, Kunihito Ioka, Hiroyuki Nakano Sep 2007

Second And Higher-Order Quasinormal Modes In Binary Black Hole Mergers, Kunihito Ioka, Hiroyuki Nakano

Articles

Black hole (BH) oscillations known as quasi-normal modes (QNMs) are one of the most important gravitational wave (GW) sources. We propose that higher perturbative order of QNMs, generated by nonlinear gravitational interaction near the BHs, are detectable and worth searching for in observations and simulations of binary BH mergers. We calculate the metric perturbations to second-order and explicitly regularize the master equation at the horizon and spatial infinity. We find that the second-order QNMs have frequencies twice the first-order ones and the GW amplitude is up to ∼ 10% that of the first-order one. The QNM frequency would also shift …

Exceptional Sets And Antoine's Necklace, William Basener Sep 2007

Exceptional Sets And Antoine's Necklace, William Basener

Articles

We study Cantor sets which occur as minimal sets for homeomorphisms of R^n. The minimality is modelled on an infinite product of finite cyclic groups and on a generalized adding machine. An interesting example is a homeomorphisms on R^3 which has Antoine’s Necklace as a minimal set. We also discuss some open problems concerning homeomorphism that have a Cantor set as a minimal set (Refer to PDF file for exact formulas).
