Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS), also known as 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, is a neurogenetic disorder that is associated with both learning disabilities and a consistent neuropsychological phenotype, including deficits in executive function, visuospatial perception, and working memory. Anatomic imaging studies have identified significant volumetric reductions in the parietal lobe of individuals with VCFS, but several studies have reported that the frontal lobe is relatively preserved. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the neural correlates of non-spatial working memory in 17 youths with VCFS, 10 of their unaffected siblings, and 10 community controls (with the same proportion of learning disabilities as …

Integrated Modeling Of Nitrate Contamination Of Groundwater In Agriculture-Dominated Watersheds, M. Almasri, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi Sep 2007

Integrated Modeling Of Nitrate Contamination Of Groundwater In Agriculture-Dominated Watersheds, M. Almasri, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents and implements a framework for modeling the impact of land use practices and protection alternatives on nitrate pollution of groundwater in agricultural watersheds. The framework utilizes the national land cover database (NLCD) of the United State Geological Survey (USGS) grid and a geographic information system (GIS) to account for the spatial distribution of on-ground nitrogen sources and corresponding loadings. The framework employs a soil nitrogen dynamic model to estimate nitrate leaching to groundwater. These estimates were used in developing a groundwater nitrate fate and transport model. The framework considers both point and non-point sources of nitrogen across …

Soil Carbon And Tree Litter Dynamics In A Red Cedar–Scotch Pine Shelterbelt, Thomas J. Sauer, Cynthia A. Cambardella, James R. Brandle Sep 2007

Soil Carbon And Tree Litter Dynamics In A Red Cedar–Scotch Pine Shelterbelt, Thomas J. Sauer, Cynthia A. Cambardella, James R. Brandle

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Carbon sequestration in the woody biomass of shelterbelts has been investigated but there have been no measurements of the C stocks in soil and tree litter under this agroforestry practice. The objective of this study was to quantify C stored in surface soil layers and tree litter within and adjacent to a 35-year-old shelterbelt in eastern Nebraska, USA. The 2-row shelterbelt was composed of eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) and scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris). A sampling grid was established across a section of the shelterbelt on Tomek silt loam (fine, smectitic, mesic Pachic Argiudolls). Four soil …

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Airborne and ground-based mixing ratio and flux measurements using eddy covariance (EC) and for the first time the mixed layer gradient (MLG) and mixed layer variance (MLV) techniques are used to assess the impact of isoprene and monoterpene emissions on atmospheric chemistry in the Amazon basin. Average noon isoprene (7.8 +/- 2.3 mg/m(2)/h) and monoterpene fluxes (1.2 +/- 0.5 mg/m(2)/h)compared well between ground and airborne measurements and are higher than fluxes estimated in this region during other seasons. The biogenic emission model, Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature (MEGAN), estimates fluxes that are within the model and …

Development Of The Characteristics Of Science Questionnaire (Csq): Assessing Student Knowledge Of The Utah State Secondary Science Core Intended Learning Outcome 6 On The Nature Of Science, Bradford N. Talbert

Theses and Dissertations

Teaching students about the nature of science is an important and necessary part of secondary science curricula. The Utah State Office of Education has provided specific guidelines called intended learning outcomes (ILOs) to teachers in the state. The ILOs are based on the national standards presented in the Project 2061 publications of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1990 and 1993. The ILOs are not tied to any one scientific discipline such as biology or chemistry, but are intended as global statements describing what scientists do and how scientific knowledge is gained. ILO 6 prescribes that students …

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of PCBs and PBBs on peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha-(PPARalpha-) associated enzyme activities or protein levels. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were administered a single IP injection (150 mu mol/kg) of either 3,3',4,4'-tetrabromobiphenyl, 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl, 3,3',5,5'-tetrabromobiphenyl, 2',3,3',4,5-pentachlorobiphenyl, 3,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl, 2,2',3,3',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl, or 3,3',4,4',5,5'-hexabromobiphenyl in corn oil (10 ml/kg). One week later, the activities of catalase, peroxisomal fatty acyl-CoA oxidase, and peroxisomal beta-oxidation as well as cytochrome P450 4A (CYP4A) protein content were determined in subcellular liver fractions. None of the peroxisomal enzyme activities were significantly increased by any of the halogenated biphenyl congeners tested. Except for minor …

Quasi-Multipliers And Algebrizations Of Operator Spaces, Masayoshi Kaneda Sep 2007

Quasi-Multipliers And Algebrizations Of Operator Spaces, Masayoshi Kaneda

Analysis Seminar

One of the most interesting questions in the operator space theory was: “What are the possible operator algebra products that a given operator space can be equipped with?” I answered this question by using quasi-mulipliers. That is, the possible operator algebra products that a given operator space can be equipped with are precisely the bilinear mappings implemented by the contractive quasi-multipliers of the operator space. Furthermore, I gave an elegant geometric characterization of the operator algebra products using the Haagerup tensor product. The Blecher-Ruan-Sinclair Theorem is obtained as a simple corollary.

Evaluation Of The Supply Chain Of Key Industrial Sectors And Its Impact On The Electricity Demand For A Regional Distribution Company, Thiago Arruda Mariotoni Sep 2007

Evaluation Of The Supply Chain Of Key Industrial Sectors And Its Impact On The Electricity Demand For A Regional Distribution Company, Thiago Arruda Mariotoni

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Considering the international scenario, in a recent past, the electrical industry was based on the concepts of monopolistic concessions and vertical utilities structures. In Brazil, until recently, the electricity companies were all governmental properties that served restricted monopolized areas. In a similar manner, in the United States, monopolies for certain concession areas were assigned to vertically integrated electric utilities. This monopolistic portfolio brought to the industry, in a generic sense, a lack in the interface between companies and consumers. This fact established a low capacity of obtaining consumer's information and consequently, a low capacity of developing precise demand forecasts.

Lately, …

Analytical Formulas And Scaling Laws For Peak Interaction Forces In Dynamic Atomic Force Microscopy, Shuiqing Hu, Arvind Raman Sep 2007

Analytical Formulas And Scaling Laws For Peak Interaction Forces In Dynamic Atomic Force Microscopy, Shuiqing Hu, Arvind Raman

Birck and NCN Publications

Determining the peak interaction force between an oscillating nanoscale tip and a sample surface has been a fundamental yet elusive goal in amplitude-modulated atomic force microscopy. Closed form analytical expressions are derived using nonlinear asymptotic theory for the peak attractive and repulsive forces that approximate with a high degree of accuracy the numerically simulated peak forces under ambient or vacuum conditions. Scaling laws involving van der Waals, chemical forces, nanoscale elasticity, and oscillator parameters are identified to demonstrate approximate similitude for the peak interaction forces under practical operating conditions.

Bubble Raft Model For A Paraboloidal Crystal, Mark Bowick, Luca Giomi, Homin Shin, Creighton K. Thomas Sep 2007

Bubble Raft Model For A Paraboloidal Crystal, Mark Bowick, Luca Giomi, Homin Shin, Creighton K. Thomas

Physics - All Scholarship

We investigate crystalline order on a two-dimensional paraboloid of revolution by assembling a single layer of millimeter-sized soap bubbles on the surface of a rotating liquid, thus extending the classic work of Bragg and Nye on planar soap bubble rafts. Topological constraints require crystalline configurations to contain a certain minimum number of topological defects such as disclinations or grain boundary scars whose structure is analyzed as a function of the aspect ratio of the paraboloid. We find the defect structure to agree with theoretical predictions and propose a mechanism for scar nucleation in the presence of large Gaussian curvature.
