Follow The Leader? Price Change Timing In Internet-Based Selling, R. J. Kauffman, Charles A. Wood
Follow The Leader? Price Change Timing In Internet-Based Selling, R. J. Kauffman, Charles A. Wood
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Internet technologies should lessen information asymmetry, prompting competitive price reactions, but this does not seem to be happening in Internet-based selling. We study empirical regularities of price change timing for music CD vendors and booksellers to assess several theoretical explanations. Our sample includes 123, 680 daily prices for 169 products and 53 firms. Bertrand competition is insufficient to explain our observation that sellers do not shift prices this way. Tacitly collusive responses to competitors' price changes are observed rather than price changes solely in response to demand or cost shifts as would be expected with Bertrand competition. We find evidence …

Option-Based Risk Management: A Field Study Of Sequential Information Technology Investment Decisions, Michel Benaroch, Mark Jeffery, Robert John Kauffman, Sandeep Shah
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This field study research evaluates the viability of applying an option-based risk management (OBRiM) framework, and its accompanying theoretical perspective and methodology, to real-world sequential information technology (IT) investment problems. These problems involve alternative investment structures that bear different risk profiles for the firm, and also may improve the payoffs of the associated projects and the organization's performance. We sought to surface the costs, benefits, and risks associated with a complex sequential investment setting that has the key features that OBRiM treats. We combine traditional, purchased real options that subsequently create strategic flexibility for the decision maker, with implicit or …
Duchampian Authenticity And The Readymade Consumer, Terra D' An Rudisill
Duchampian Authenticity And The Readymade Consumer, Terra D' An Rudisill
Institute for the Humanities Theses
The goal of this work is to define the term Duchampian authenticity. I focus primarily on the artist Marcel Duchamp's works and philosophies in relation not only to traditional philosophies regarding authenticity but also in relation to his effect on authenticity's metamorphosis in popular culture and the mass market. I propose that the monumental paradigm shifts produced by Duchamp's conceptual and aesthetic experiments within the realm of visual art spread into our cultural bedrock, ultimately defining the consumer's ability to attain authenticity and identity through inauthentic and ephemeral commodities. Marcel Duchamp challenged traditional notions of the authentic experience and translated …
Integrating Game Technology And Discrete Event Simulation To Analyze Mass Casualty Scenarios, Jason Loveland
Integrating Game Technology And Discrete Event Simulation To Analyze Mass Casualty Scenarios, Jason Loveland
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In the last 10 years, video games have become complex simulation environments with high resolution 3D graphics enabled by powerhouse rendering engines, multi-player client server networks, user friendly displays and graphical user interface , while remaining relatively inexpensive. There is a critical need for systems engineering analysis and rapid trade studies due to changes in operations caused by current events such as terrorist attacks, asymmetric threats, natural disasters, etc. Modem games provide a unique way to visualize and interact with these complex environments, scenarios, missions, and operations. A discrete event simulator (DES) provides an environment to model system architecture behavior, …

Lazy Preservation: Reconstructing Websites From The Web Infrastructure, Frank Mccown
Lazy Preservation: Reconstructing Websites From The Web Infrastructure, Frank Mccown
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Backup or preservation of websites is often not considered until after a catastrophic event has occurred. In the face of complete website loss, webmasters or concerned third parties have attempted to recover some of their websites from the Internet Archive. Still others have sought to retrieve missing resources from the caches of commercial search engines. Inspired by these post hoc reconstruction attempts, this dissertation introduces the concept of lazy preservation{ digital preservation performed as a result of the normal operations of the Web Infrastructure (web archives, search engines and caches). First, the Web Infrastructure (WI) is characterized by its preservation …

A Comparison Of Five Models For Estimating Clear-Sky Solar Radiation, Robert Leslie Annear, Scott A. Wells
A Comparison Of Five Models For Estimating Clear-Sky Solar Radiation, Robert Leslie Annear, Scott A. Wells
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Many agencies in the USA are developing management approaches to address water quality concerns and threatened and endangered species habitat requirements in water bodies. Many of these water bodies are water quality limited for temperature. Factors influencing stream temperature include: streamside vegetation, topographic shading, inflows and outflows, stream width, stream depth, light extinction and solar radiation. One of the key driving factors in estimating a water body heat budget is calculating the amount of solar radiation incident on the water surface. Even though it is preferable to measure clear-sky solar radiation, many temperature models rely on theoretical estimates of clear-sky …

Executive Summary
- The Weed Sentry program surveyed more than 750 miles of federal lands in Clark County for invasive, exotic plant species.
- Weed Sentry also removed more than 600,000 individual invasive plants from federal
lands. These removals represent pro-active efforts that may have forestalled large
infestations difficult and costly to eradicate. - In response to a request by the manager of the Fish and Wildlife Service Desert National
Wildlife Refuge, a major effort of surveying springs for plant community composition
and invasive plants provided unique knowledge services by the Weed Sentry program.
No such baseline information existed for the Sheep Range. …

Blacklistable Anonymous Credentials: Blocking Misbehaving Users Without Ttps (Extended Version), Patrick P. Tsang, Man Ho Au, Apu Kapadia, Sean W. Smith
Computer Science Technical Reports
Several credential systems have been proposed in which users can authenticate to services anonymously. Since anonymity can give users the license to misbehave, some variants allow the selective deanonymization (or linking) of misbehaving users upon a complaint to a trusted third party (TTP). The ability of the TTP to revoke a user's privacy at any time, however, is too strong a punishment for misbehavior. To limit the scope of deanonymization, systems such as ``e-cash'' have been proposed in which users are deanonymized under only certain types of well-defined misbehavior such as ``double spending.'' While useful in some applications, it is …

The assembly of synthetic oligonucleotides into genes and genomes is an important methodology. Several methodologies for such synthesis have been developed, but they have two drawbacks: (1) the processes are slow and (2) the error frequencies are high (typically 1–3 errors/kb of DNA). Thermal damage is a major contributor to biosynthetic errors. In this paper, we elucidate the advantages of rapid gene synthesis by polymerase chain assembly (PCA) when used in combination with smart error control strategies. We used a high-speed thermocycler (PCRJet®) to effectively minimize thermal damage and to perform rapid assembly of synthetic oligonucleotides to construct two different …
Population Biology And Monitoring Of The Cuban Hutia At Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Gary W. Witmer, Martin Lowney
Population Biology And Monitoring Of The Cuban Hutia At Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Gary W. Witmer, Martin Lowney
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The Cuban hutia (Capromys pilorides) is the largest native mammal occurring in Cuba. Endemic to the West Indies, most species of hutia are rare or extinct because of over-harvesting, exotic species introductions, and habitat modifications by humans. An exception is Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where the Cuban hutia is very common and is responsible for a variety of damage and conflicts, including damage to landscaping, gnawing through cables, damage to vehicles, the accumulation of large amounts of feces in residential areas, and damage to native vegetation, with little subsequent regeneration of many plant species. Current management focuses on population …

Transients Of The Electromagnetically-Induced-Transparency-Enhanced Refractive Kerr Nonlinearity, John C. Howell, M. V. Pack, R. M. Camacho
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We report observations of the dynamics of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a Λ system when the ground states are Stark shifted. Interactions of this type exhibit large optical nonlinearities called Kerr nonlinearities, and have numerous applications. The EIT Kerr nonlinearity is relatively slow, which is a limiting factor that may make many potential applications impossible. Using rubidium atoms, we observe the dynamics of the EIT Kerr nonlinearity using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer to measure phase modulation of the EIT fields resulting from a pulsed signal beam Stark shifting the ground state energy levels. The rise times and transients agree well …
Implementing An Embedded Information Literacy Program At The University Level: Best Practices, Ann Agee
Implementing An Embedded Information Literacy Program At The University Level: Best Practices, Ann Agee
Faculty and Staff Publications
Information literacy is the ability of individuals "to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information" (American Library Association, 1989, para. 3). At San Jose State University (SJSU), information literacy has been traditionally taught through one-shot, 50-minute lectures delivered by university librarians to students enrolled in a select few undergraduate courses. This method of instruction has proven to be neither sustainable nor effective. The lectures are not tailored by discipline and students might receive the same lecture several times while completing their lower-division coursework. SJSU wants to replace this format …

Long-lived, heavy particles are predicted in a number of models beyond the standard model of particle physics. We present the first direct search for such particles’ decays, occurring up to 100 h after their production and not synchronized with an accelerator bunch crossing. We apply the analysis to the gluino (g̃), predicted in split supersymmetry, which after hadronization can become charged and lose enough momentum through ionization to come to rest in dense particle detectors. Approximately 410 pb-1 of pp̅ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV collected with the D0 detector during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron …
