Sensitivity Curves For Asymmetric Trimming Hinge Estimators, D.B. Stark, J.F. Reed Iii Nov 2007

Sensitivity Curves For Asymmetric Trimming Hinge Estimators, D.B. Stark, J.F. Reed Iii

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Robust estimators have been developed and tested for symmetric distributions via simulation studies. The primary objective was to show that they are more efficient than the sample mean when used in conjunction with asymmetric distributions. Little attention has been given to how they perform on data that are from asymmetric distributions, or from distributions that have inherent anomalies (messy data). Thus, the behavior of hinge estimators using sensitivity curve are examined.

A Note On Probability Trees, W. J. Hurley

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Not many introductory probability and statistics textbooks emphasize the use of probability trees to make complex probability calculations. This is puzzling in view of the power that trees bring to organizing such calculations for students. An effective classroom technique is discussed is this note.

Wireless Positioning Techniques: A Developer's Update, Seamus Rooney, Keith Gardiner, James Carswell Nov 2007

Wireless Positioning Techniques: A Developer's Update, Seamus Rooney, Keith Gardiner, James Carswell

Conference papers

This paper describes the current efforts to develop an open source, privacy sensitive, location determination software component for mobile devices. Currently in mobile computing, the ability of a mobile device to determine its own location is becoming increasingly desirable as the usefulness of such a feature enhances many commercial applications. There have been numerous attempts to achieve this from both the network positioning perspective and also from the wireless beacon angle not to mention the integration of GPS into mobile devices. There are two important aspects to consider when using such a system which are privacy and cost. This paper …

Integrating The Wasl Into The High School Algebra Curriculum, Kent Stafford Pearsons Nov 2007

Integrating The Wasl Into The High School Algebra Curriculum, Kent Stafford Pearsons

All Graduate Projects

Most Algebra courses in Washington are supplemented with Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) material. However, in the last two years, little more than half of Washington sophomores passed the math portion of the WASL; for about half of tenth graders the extra worksheets did little to no good. Students need relevant WASL material that correlates with the current math they are studying. In this manner, even though questions may be phrased differently, the material is familiar and so answering questions are more possible. Also, since new worksheets have multiple choice, teachers can discuss how most wisely to answer this …

How To Solve (Or Avoid) The Exactions Problem, Richard A. Epstein

Missouri Law Review

It is my great honor to deliver the Earl F. Nelson lecture for the year 2007. I have never met Mr. Nelson, but I have looked at the roster of distinguished people who have spoken in this lecture series, and I am pleased to have my name added to such an august list. I would also like to add my tribute to Dale Whitman, to whom this Conference has been dedicated. I regard him as a one-man version of Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside, a reference to - for those of you who remember - the old Army teams from …

Self-Organization Of Scroll Waves In Excitable Media : Parallel Simulations On A 64-Opteron Linux Cluster, Igor Kaplun Nov 2007

Self-Organization Of Scroll Waves In Excitable Media : Parallel Simulations On A 64-Opteron Linux Cluster, Igor Kaplun

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Spiral waves have been observed and studied in a variety of biological, physical and chemical systems, known as excitable media. The most famous examples of excitable media include cardiac tissue, the Belousov-Zhabotinsky chemical reaction, and aggregation of starving slime mold amoeba.

It had been shown previously that spiral waves could self-organize into multi- armed spirals. A 3D analog of a 2D spiral wave is called a scroll wave. It rotates around a 1D imaginary tube known as a filament. A later study based on the so-called Puschino model has reported formation of multi-armed scroll waves in 3D. But a question …

Macroscopic Consequences Of Calcium Signaling In Microdomains: A First-Passage-Time Approach, Robert Rovetti Nov 2007

Macroscopic Consequences Of Calcium Signaling In Microdomains: A First-Passage-Time Approach, Robert Rovetti

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

Calcium (Ca) plays an important role in regulating various cellular processes. In a variety of cell types, Ca signaling occurs within microdomains where channels deliver localized pulses of Ca activating a nearby collection of Ca-sensitive receptors. The small number of channels involved ensures that the signaling process is stochastic. The aggregate response of several thousand of these microdomains yields a whole-cell response which dictates the cell behavior. Here, we study the statistical properties of a population of these microdomains in response to a trigger signal. We use a first-passage-time approach to show analytically how Ca release in the whole cell …

Probability Coverage And Interval Length For Welch’S And Yuen’S Techniques: Shift In Location, Change In Scale, And (Un)Equal Sizes, S. Jonathan Mends-Cole Nov 2007

Probability Coverage And Interval Length For Welch’S And Yuen’S Techniques: Shift In Location, Change In Scale, And (Un)Equal Sizes, S. Jonathan Mends-Cole

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Coverage for Welch’s technique was less than the confidence-level when size was inversely proportional to variance and skewness was extreme. Under negative kurtosis, coverage for Yuen’s technique was attenuated. Under skewness and heteroscedasticity, coverage for Yuen’s technique was more accurate than Welch’s technique.

Global Measure Of The Deviation Of A Wavelet Density Estimator, Kussiy K. Alyass Nov 2007

Global Measure Of The Deviation Of A Wavelet Density Estimator, Kussiy K. Alyass

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A wavelet estimator f*(x) of an unknown probability density function f(x)∈L2(R) is considered. A conditional central limit theorem for martingales is used to show that ∫([f *(x) − f (x)]^2)dx is asymptotically normally distributed. Results obtained can be used in a test of goodness-of-fit.

A Modified X̄ Control Chart For Samples Drawn From Finite Populations, Michael B. C. Khoo Nov 2007

A Modified X̄ Control Chart For Samples Drawn From Finite Populations, Michael B. C. Khoo

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The X̄ chart works well under the assumption of random sampling from infinite populations. However, many process monitoring scenarios may consist of random sampling from finite populations. A modified X̄ chart is proposed in this article to solve the problems encountered by the standard X̄ chart when samples are drawn from finite populations.

Generalized Linear Mixed-Effects Models For The Analysis Of Odor Detection Data, Sandra Hall, Matthew S. Mayo, Xu-Feng Niu, James C. Walker

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Olfactory detection has become a science of interest. Seven individuals’ odor detection abilities are explored and an attempt is made to characterize all subjects with one generalized linear mixed effects model. Two methods of fitting the models were used and simulations were conducted to discover which method yielded the best results.

Operating Characteristics Of The Dif Mimic Approach Using Jöreskog’S Covariance Matrix With Ml And Wls Estimation For Short Scales, Michaela N. Gelin, Bruno D. Zumbo Nov 2007

Operating Characteristics Of The Dif Mimic Approach Using Jöreskog’S Covariance Matrix With Ml And Wls Estimation For Short Scales, Michaela N. Gelin, Bruno D. Zumbo

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Type I error rate of a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach for investigating differential item functioning (DIF) in short scales was studied. Muthén’s SEM model for DIF was examined using a covariance matrix (Jöreskog, 2002). It is conditioned on the latent variable, while testing the effect of the grouping variable over-and-above the underlying latent variable. Thus, it is a multiple-indicators, multiple-causes (MIMIC) DIF model. Type I error rates were determined using data reflective of short scales with ordinal item response formats typically found in the social and behavioral sciences. Results indicate Type I error rates for the DIF MIMIC model, …

Relative Pareto Minimizers To Multiobjective Problems: Existence And Optimality Conditions, Truong Q. Bao, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

In this paper we introduce and study enhanced notions of relative Pareto minimizers to constrained multiobjective problems that are defined via several kinds of relative interiors of ordering cones and occupy intermediate positions between the classical notions of Pareto and weak Pareto efficiency/minimality. Using advanced tools of variational analysis and generalized differentiation, we establish the existence of relative Pareto minimizers to general multiobjective problems under a refined version of the subdifferential Palais-Smale condition for set-valued mappings with values in partially ordered spaces and then derive necessary optimality conditions for these minimizers (as well as for conventional efficient and weak efficient …

Electrostatic Force Microscopy Studies Of Boron-Doped Diamond Films, Santosh Gupta, O. A. Williams, Eric W. Bohannan

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Much has been learned from electrochemical properties of boron-doped diamond (BDD) thin films synthesized using microwave plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition about the factors influencing electrochemical activity, but some characteristics are still not entirely understood, such as its electrical conductivity in relation with microscale structure. Therefore, to effectively utilize these materials, understanding both the microscopic structure and physical (electrical, in particular) properties becomes indispensable. in addition to topography using atomic force microscopy, electrostatic force microscopy (EFM) in phase mode measuring the long-range electrostatic force gradients, helps to map the electrical conductivity heterogeneity of boron-doped micro-/nanocrystalline diamond surfaces. the mapping of electrical …

Combination Of Sar Remote Sensing And Gis For Monitoring Subglacial Volcanic Activity – Recent Results From Vatnajökull Ice Cap (Iceland), K. Scharrer, Rocco Malservisi, Ch. Mayer, O. Spieler, U. Münzer

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

This paper presents latest results from the combined use of SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) remote sensing and GIS providing detailed insights into recent volcanic activity under Vatnajökull ice cap (Iceland). Glaciers atop active volcanoes pose a constant potential danger to adjacent inhabited regions and infrastructure. Besides the usual volcanic hazards (lava flows, pyroclastic clouds, tephra falls, etc.), the volcano-ice interaction leads to enormous meltwater torrents (icelandic: jökulhlaup), devastating large areas in the surroundings of the affected glacier. The presented monitoring strategy addresses the three crucial questions: When will an eruption occur, where is the eruption site and which area is …

Polarization Rotation Correction In Radiometry: An Error Analysis, David G. Long, Derek Hudson, Jeffrey R. Piepmeier Nov 2007

Polarization Rotation Correction In Radiometry: An Error Analysis, David G. Long, Derek Hudson, Jeffrey R. Piepmeier

Faculty Publications

Yueh proposed a method of using the third Stokes parameter TU to correct brightness temperatures such as Tv and Th for polarization rotation. This paper presents an extended error analysis of the estimation of Tv , Th, and TQ equiv Tv - Th by Yueh's method. In order to carry out the analysis, we first develop a forward model of polarization rotation that accounts for the random nature of thermal radiation, receiver noise, and (to first order) calibration. Analytic formulas are then derived for the bias, standard deviation (STD), and root-mean-square error (RMSE) of estimated TQ, Tv , and Th, …

Blinking On The Bench: How Judges Decide Cases, Chris Guthrie, Jeffrey J. Rachlinski, Andrew J. Wistrich Nov 2007

Blinking On The Bench: How Judges Decide Cases, Chris Guthrie, Jeffrey J. Rachlinski, Andrew J. Wistrich

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

How do judges judge? Do they apply law to facts in a mechanical and deliberative way, as the formalists suggest they do, or do they rely on hunches and gut feelings, as the realists maintain? Debate has raged for decades, but researchers have offered little hard evidence in support of either model. Relying on empirical studies of judicial reasoning and decision making, we propose an entirely new model of judging that provides a more accurate explanation of judicial behavior. Our model accounts for the tendency of the human brain to make automatic, snap judgments, which are surprisingly accurate, but which …

Do Juries Add Value? Evidence From An Empirical Study Of Jury Trial Waiver Clauses In Large Corporate Contracts, Theodore Eisenberg, Geoffrey P. Miller Nov 2007

Do Juries Add Value? Evidence From An Empirical Study Of Jury Trial Waiver Clauses In Large Corporate Contracts, Theodore Eisenberg, Geoffrey P. Miller

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

We study jury trial waivers in a data set of 2,816 contracts contained as exhibits in Form 8-K filings by reporting corporations during 2002. Because these contracts are associated with events deemed material to the financial condition of SEC-reporting firms, they likely are carefully negotiated by sophisticated, well-informed parties and thus provide presumptive evidence about the value associated with the availability of jury trials. A minority of contracts, about 20 percent, waived jury trials. An additional 9 percent of contracts had arbitration clauses that effectively preclude jury trials though the reason for arbitration clauses need not specifically relate to juries. …

Earthquake activity in the Yucca Mountain from October 1, 2002 through September 30, 2003 (FY03) is assessed and compared with previous activity in the region. FY03 is the first reporting year since the 1992 M 5.6 Little Skull Mountain earthquake with no earthquakes greater than M 3.0 within 65 km of Yucca Mountain. In addition, FY03 includes the fewest number of earthquakes greater than M 2.0 in any reporting year since the LSM event. With 3075 earthquakes in the catalog, FY03 represents the second largest number of earthquakes (second to FY02) since FY96 when digital seismic network operations began. The …

Incremental Procedures For Partitioning Highly Intermixed Multi-Class Datasets Into Hyper-Spherical And Hyper-Ellipsoidal Clusters, Qinglu Kong, Qiuming Zhu Nov 2007

Incremental Procedures For Partitioning Highly Intermixed Multi-Class Datasets Into Hyper-Spherical And Hyper-Ellipsoidal Clusters, Qinglu Kong, Qiuming Zhu

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Two procedures for partitioning large collections of highly intermixed datasets of different classes into a number of hyper-spherical or hyper-ellipsoidal clusters are presented. The incremental procedures are to generate a minimum numbers of hyper-spherical or hyper-ellipsoidal clusters with each cluster containing a maximum number of data points of the same class. The procedures extend the move-to-front algorithms originally designed for construction of minimum sized enclosing balls or ellipsoids for dataset of a single class. The resulting clusters of the dataset can be used for data modeling, outlier detection, discrimination analysis, and knowledge discovery.

Comparison Of Probabilistic Boolean Network And Dynamic Bayesian Network Approaches For Inferring Gene Regulatory Networks, Peng Li, Chaoyang Zhang, Edward J. Perkins, Ping Gong, Youping Deng Nov 2007

Comparison Of Probabilistic Boolean Network And Dynamic Bayesian Network Approaches For Inferring Gene Regulatory Networks, Peng Li, Chaoyang Zhang, Edward J. Perkins, Ping Gong, Youping Deng

Faculty Publications

Background: The regulation of gene expression is achieved through gene regulatory networks (GRNs) in which collections of genes interact with one another and other substances in a cell. In order to understand the underlying function of organisms, it is necessary to study the behavior of genes in a gene regulatory network context. Several computational approaches are available for modeling gene regulatory networks with different datasets. In order to optimize modeling of GRN, these approaches must be compared and evaluated in terms of accuracy and efficiency.

Results: In this paper, two important computational approaches for modeling gene regulatory networks, …

While Wikipedia offers full-text search to its users, the accuracy of its relevance-based search can be compromised by poor quality articles edited by non-experts and inexperienced contributors. In this paper, we propose a framework that re-ranks Wikipedia search results considering article quality. We develop two quality measurement models, namely Basic and PeerReview, to derive article quality based on co-authoring data gathered from articles' edit history. Compared with Wikipedia's full-text search engine, Google and Wikiseek, our experimental results showed that (i) quality-only ranking produced by PeerReview gives …
