Structural, Electrical And Infrared Studies Of Ni_{0.7}Cd_{0.3}Sm_Xfe_{2-X}O_4 Ferrite, M. Z. Said, D. M. Hemeda, S. Abdel Kader, G. Z. Farag Jan 2007

Structural, Electrical And Infrared Studies Of Ni_{0.7}Cd_{0.3}Sm_Xfe_{2-X}O_4 Ferrite, M. Z. Said, D. M. Hemeda, S. Abdel Kader, G. Z. Farag

Turkish Journal of Physics

A series of samples of the system Ni_{0.7}Cd_{0.3}Sm_xFe_{2-x}O_4 (x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.05 and 0.06) were prepared by the usual ceramic technique. X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy (IR) and electrical properties were studied. The X-ray diffraction pattern confirms the presence of spinel phase structure for the sample without Sm content. For the samples with Sm ions, some diffraction peaks appeared which belongs to the orthorhombic phase structure. The main two absorption bands in IR spectra were observed around 600 cm^{-1} (\upsilon_1), which was attributed to stretching vibration of tetrahedral groups Fe^{3+}-O^{2-}, and that around 400~cm^{-1} (\upsilon _2) was …

Variational Ground State Approach For A Tunnelling Exciton Coupled To Phonons, Dezider Kulak Jan 2007

Variational Ground State Approach For A Tunnelling Exciton Coupled To Phonons, Dezider Kulak

Turkish Journal of Physics

In this paper a variational study of a tunnelling exciton (Frenkel exciton) coupled to an arbitrary number of phonon modes is presented. The results of our model are presented both for weak non-adiabatic cases and for strong cases; and we come to the conclusion that the tunnelling reduction factor, the ground state energy of the tunnelling exciton-phonons system, and the mean number of ground state phonons, as the functions of the exciton-phonons coupling strength, are continuous, a condition that does not apply in cases of the tunnelling exciton-phonons models presented in the previous studies. In comparison with the previous studies, …

An Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Physical Fitness Measures And Academic Achievement, George Victor Harnick Jan 2007

An Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Physical Fitness Measures And Academic Achievement, George Victor Harnick

Graduate Research Papers

Over the past several years, physical education has often been forced aside in the wake of increased emphasis on improvements to academic performance in the core areas of study such as science, math, and reading. This stems from the implementation of the Title II Elementary and Secondary Education Act (a.k.a. No Child Left Behind Act of 2001) and the expectation that all students in schools funded by the federal government will be "proficient" in these core subjects by the year 2014 (United States Department of Education, 2007). With this law in effect, many school districts are being forced to increase …

Incorporating Readings Outside Of The Textbook Into A High School Science Curriculum, Melissa Hesner Jan 2007

Incorporating Readings Outside Of The Textbook Into A High School Science Curriculum, Melissa Hesner

Graduate Research Papers

The use of trade books, such as nonfiction and storybooks, is often used in elementary classrooms as instructional tools for learning content. For many reasons. this strategy is neglected at the secondary level where textbooks remain the dominant, if only reading resource for students. The need to incorporate into instruction meaningful reading experiences beyond the textbook is important for developing students' scientific literacy and reading skills. This project explains the introduction of reading resources outside of the textbook, perceived results of the implementation, and selections for future reading in a high school physical science curriculum.

Discovering Dna, Melisa Reilly

Graduate Research Papers

Three years ago I was approached by a member of the Upward Bound Staff informing me that they needed a Biology teacher for there summer program. At that time I was a substitute teacher and needed a pay check for the summer. Since I had wonderful prior experience tutoring and mentoring for the program I applied and got the job. The problem I faced was that there was no set curriculum. Although it allows for a lot of freedom, it was overwhelming to me as a new teacher.

However, the data that is present suggests that the benefits of a balanced calendar are more prevalent than the traditional calendar.

Production Data Analysis Of Shale Gas Reservoirs, Adam Michael Lewis Jan 2007

Production Data Analysis Of Shale Gas Reservoirs, Adam Michael Lewis

LSU Master's Theses

Hydrocarbon resources from unconventional shale gas reservoirs are becoming very important in the United States in recent years. Understanding the effects of adsorption on production data analysis will increase the effectiveness of reservoir management in these challenging environments. The use of an adjusted system compressibility proposed by Bumb and McKee (1988) is critical in this process. It allows for dimensional and dimensionless type curves to be corrected at a reasonably fundamental level, and it breaks the effects of adsorption into something that is relatively simple to understand. This coupled with a new form of material balance time that was originally …

Record-Keeping Systems Adoption By Louisiana Dairy Farmers, Elisabeth Grisham Jan 2007

Record-Keeping Systems Adoption By Louisiana Dairy Farmers, Elisabeth Grisham

LSU Master's Theses

Fifty Louisiana dairy farmers were interviewed to gather production amounts, costs of production, management techniques, technologies adopted, and demographic information. These data were used to analyze what record-keeping systems the farmers were adopting and to what extent the systems were being used. Logit, ordered probit, negative binomial regression, OLS regression, and double hurdle models were used to determine adoption and intensity. In this study, age was found to decrease the probability that a farmer would believe their computer was not at all useful and also of limited usefulness, while increasing the probability that a farmer would believe the computer was …

Optimization For Software Release And Crash, Tanvir Khan Jan 2007

Optimization For Software Release And Crash, Tanvir Khan

LSU Master's Theses

Software testing is a process to detect faults in the completeness and quality of developed computer software. Testing is a key process in assuring quality by identifying defects in software, and possibly fixing them, before it is delivered to end-users. A major decision to make during this software testing is, to determine whether to continue testing and eventually releasing the software, or when to stop the test and ‘crash’ it. Such a decision needs to be made to optimally balance the tradeoff between the cost of development and the reliability of the software. In this paper, a new optimal strategy …

Slow Flow Between Concentric Cones, O. Hall, C. P. Hills, A. D. Gilbert Jan 2007

Slow Flow Between Concentric Cones, O. Hall, C. P. Hills, A. D. Gilbert

Articles

This paper considers the low-Reynolds-number flow of an incompressible fluid contained in the gap between two coaxial cones with coincident apices and bounded by a spherical lid. The two cones and the lid are allowed to rotate independently about their common axis, generating a swirling motion. The swirl induces a secondary, meridional circulation through inertial effects. For specific configurations complex eigenmodes representing an infinite sequence of eddies, analogous to those found in two-dimensional corner flows and some three-dimensional geometries, form a component of this secondary circulation. When the cones rotate these eigenmodes, arising from the geometry, compete with the forced …

Krylov Subspaces From Bilinear Representations Of Nonlinear Systems, Marissa Condon, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2007

Krylov Subspaces From Bilinear Representations Of Nonlinear Systems, Marissa Condon, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

For efficient simulation of state-of-the-art dynamical systems as arise in all aspects of engineering, the development of reduced-order models is of paramount importance. While linear reduction techniques have received considerable study, increasingly nonlinear model reduction is becoming a significant field of interest. From a circuits and systems viewpoint, systems involving micromachined devices or systems involving mixed technologies necessitate the development of reduced-order nonlinear models. From a control systems viewpoint, the design of controllers for nonlinear systems is greatly facilitated by nonlinear model reduction strategies. To this end, the paper proposes two novel model-reduction strategies for nonlinear systems. The first involves …

Generalised Fourier Transform For The Camassa-Holm Hierarchy, Adrian Constantin, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2007

Generalised Fourier Transform For The Camassa-Holm Hierarchy, Adrian Constantin, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

The squared eigenfunctions of the spectral problem associated to the Camassa-Holm equation represent a complete basis of functions, which helps to describe the Inverse Scattering Transform for the Camassa-Holm hierarchy as a Generalised Fourier transform. The main result of this work is the derivation of the completeness relation for the squared solutions of the Camassa-Holm spectral problem. We show that all the fundamental properties of the Camassa-Holm equation such as the integrals of motion, the description of the equations of the whole hierarchy and their Hamiltonian structures can be naturally expressed making use of the completeness relation and the recursion …

Quartz Grain Surface Textures As Indicators Of Infilling Processes And Depositional Environments Associated With Ice-Wedge Casts In Northeast Iowa, Michael Loux Jan 2007

Quartz Grain Surface Textures As Indicators Of Infilling Processes And Depositional Environments Associated With Ice-Wedge Casts In Northeast Iowa, Michael Loux

Honors Program Theses

Ice-wedge casts and polygonal patterned ground are common features of the Iowan Surface of Northeast Iowa. Paleoenvironmental studies in Iowa and adjacent states indicate that tundra conditions existed in Northeast Iowa between 21,000 and 16,500 years BP, the coldest part of late \\'.'isconsinan time. Degradation of permafrost and formation of ice-wedge casts must have occurred near the end of this cold climate episode, which also promoted extreme erosion of the landscape in Northeast Iowa. The sediment-filled wedges in Northeast Iowa occur in pre-Illinoian till with the infilling material consisting mostly of sand. The details of the infilling history of the …

Spectroscopic Characterisation Of Novel Polycyclic Aromatic Polymers, Luke O'Neill, Patrick Lynch, Mary Mcnamara, Hugh Byrne Jan 2007

Spectroscopic Characterisation Of Novel Polycyclic Aromatic Polymers, Luke O'Neill, Patrick Lynch, Mary Mcnamara, Hugh Byrne

Articles

A series of novel polyphenylenevinylene (PPV) derivative polymers were studied by absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopies. The effect of the sequential introduction of polycyclic aromatic ring substituents into the delocalized backbone was examined with relation to hypsochromatic and bathochromatic shifting. While the replacement of the phenyl units by naphthyl units results in a substantial hypsochromic shift of both the absorption and emission spectra, their subsequent substitution by anthryl units results in a bathochromic shift. The system is modeled according to, and is found to be consistent with, a previous study of donor-acceptor polyenes of varying length. The electronic structure of the …

Vibrational Characterisation And Fluorescence Optimisation Of Polycyclic Polymers, Luke O'Neill, Patrick Lynch, Mary Mcnamara, Hugh Byrne Jan 2007

Vibrational Characterisation And Fluorescence Optimisation Of Polycyclic Polymers, Luke O'Neill, Patrick Lynch, Mary Mcnamara, Hugh Byrne

Articles

A systematic series of polycyclic novel polymers was studied by Raman spectroscopy. The effect of the sequential introduction of polycyclic aromatic ring substituents into the delocalized backbone was examined in relation to the variation of the relative ring breathing and stretching as well as the vinyl stretch frequencies. Replacement of the phenyl units by higher order acene moieties such as naphthyl and anthryl results in a shift of the characteristic stretching frequencies, and analysis of the vinyl stretch leads to the confirmation that higher order acene substitution into the delocalized backbone substantially weakens the vinyl bond. Semiquantitative integrated Raman analysis …

A Systematic Study Of The Effects Of Naphthalene And Anthracene Substitution On The Properties Of Ppv Derivative Conjugated Systems, Patrick Lynch, Luke O'Neill, David Bradley, Hugh Byrne, Mary Mcnamara Jan 2007

A Systematic Study Of The Effects Of Naphthalene And Anthracene Substitution On The Properties Of Ppv Derivative Conjugated Systems, Patrick Lynch, Luke O'Neill, David Bradley, Hugh Byrne, Mary Mcnamara

Articles

The systematic synthesis of poly(phenylvinylene) (PPV) derivatives by the Wittig-Horner reaction is reported. The phenyl units of the PPV structure are methodically substituted by naphthyl and anthryl units to form a homologous series of structures. The 2,6 attachment of the vinylene linkage on the anthryl ring provides novel structures that have not been reported before due to their synthetic inaccessibility. The introduction of naphthyl units results in a hypsochromatic shift in the absorption and emission spectra, while the introduction of anthryl units leads to a bathochromatic shift relative to the naphthalene structures. The observed structural variation of the spectroscopic properties …

Instructional Recommendations For The Teaching Of Writing, Bridgette Wagoner Jan 2007

Instructional Recommendations For The Teaching Of Writing, Bridgette Wagoner

Graduate Research Papers

Clearly, writing is an essential life, work, and educational skill, and far too many students without essential writing skills are receiving high school diplomas. These realities put many recent high school graduates at a disadvantage in personal, professional, and educational arenas. Writing skills are simply too important to be ignored. This reality begs an important question: Which instructional approaches are likely to lead to improved student writing? For the purposes of this paper, research will center mainly on controlled studies, though much insight also stands to be gained from studies of what writers and teachers of writing have to say …

Harmonization Through Condemnation: Is New London The Key To World Patent Harmony?, Max S. Oppenheimer Jan 2007

Harmonization Through Condemnation: Is New London The Key To World Patent Harmony?, Max S. Oppenheimer

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Since 1790, when two U.S. patent applicants have claimed the same invention, the patent has been awarded to the first inventor. Today, the United States stands alone in the industrialized world, and many argue that the United States should, in the interest of world patent harmony, change its system so as to award a contested patent to the first applicant. Of the arguments advanced to justify the change, the only ones that withstand scrutiny are that "all the other countries are doing it" and the hope that some concessions in other aspects of intellectual property or trade might be obtained …

Appropriate Application Of The Standardized Precipitation Index In Arid Locations And Dry Seasons, Hong Wu, Mark D. Svoboda, Michael J. Hayes, Donald A. Wilhite, Fujiang Wen Jan 2007

Appropriate Application Of The Standardized Precipitation Index In Arid Locations And Dry Seasons, Hong Wu, Mark D. Svoboda, Michael J. Hayes, Donald A. Wilhite, Fujiang Wen

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) is now widely used throughout the world in both a re-search and an operational mode. For arid climates, or those with a distinct dry season where zero values are common, the SPI at short time scales is lower bounded, referring to non-normally distributed in this study. In these cases, the SPI is always greater than a certain value and fails to indicate a drought occurrence. The nationwide statistics based on our study suggest that the non-normality rates are closely related to local precipitation climates. In the eastern United States, SPI values at short time scales …

Burrows Dug By Large Vertebrates Into Rain-Moistened Middle Jurassic Sand Dunes: A Reply, David B. Loope Jan 2007

Burrows Dug By Large Vertebrates Into Rain-Moistened Middle Jurassic Sand Dunes: A Reply, David B. Loope

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Odier (2007) is concerned with two issues: (1) I did not cite his work on burrows in the Navajo Sandstones of southeastern Utah in my article (Loope 2006), and (2) he believes I amwrong in interpreting the structures preserved in the Entrada Sandstone as burrows. On the first issue, I failed to cite both his 2004 abstract and the newly published book that he sent me in October 2006. My article was accepted on June 12, 2006; I returned the proofs on August 23; and the issue was published online on October 4, 2006. The timing of these events makes …
