National Assessment Program : Ict Literacy Years 6 & 10 Report 2005, John Ainley, Julian Fraillon, Chris Freeman, Ministerial Council On Education, Employment, Training And Youth Affairs (Mceetya)

ICT - Digital Literacy

Australia's national goals for schooling assert that when students leave school they should be: confident, creative and productive users of new technologies, particularly information and communication technologies, and understand the impact of those technologies on society. The Australian National Assessment Program includes the systematic assessment of the extent to which this goal is being achieved through triennial sample surveys of students in Years 6 and 10. This report is based on the assessment of ICT literacy conducted in October 2005. It describes the development of a computer-based tool for assessing ICT literacy among school students and the application of that …

Design And Performance Of A Curved-Crystal X-Ray Emission Spectrometer, A. C. Hudson, Wayne C. Stolte, Dennis W. Lindle, Renaud Guillemin Jan 2007

Design And Performance Of A Curved-Crystal X-Ray Emission Spectrometer, A. C. Hudson, Wayne C. Stolte, Dennis W. Lindle, Renaud Guillemin

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

A curved-crystal x-ray emission spectrometer has been designed and built to measure 2–5 keV x-ray fluorescence resulting from a core-level excitation of gas phase species. The spectrometer can rotate 180°, allowing detection of emitted x rays with variable polarization angles, and is capable of collecting spectra over a wide energy range (20 eV wide with 0.5 eV resolution at the Cl K edge) simultaneously. In addition, the entire experimental chamber can be rotated about the incident-radiation axis by nearly 360° while maintaining vacuum, permitting measurements of angular distributions of emitted x rays.

Tumour Suppressor Function Of Rnase L In A Mouse Model, Wendy Liu, Shu Ling Liang, Hongli Liu, Robert Silverman, Aimin Zhou Jan 2007

Tumour Suppressor Function Of Rnase L In A Mouse Model, Wendy Liu, Shu Ling Liang, Hongli Liu, Robert Silverman, Aimin Zhou

Chemistry Faculty Publications

RNase L is one of the key enzymes involved in the molecular mechanisms of interferon (IFN) actions. Upon binding with its activator, 5′-phosphorylated, 2′-5′ oligoadenylates (2-5A), RNase L plays an important role in the antiviral and anti-proliferative functions of IFN, and exerts proapoptotic activity independent of IFN. In this study, we have found that RNase L retards proliferation in an IFN-dependent and independent fashion. To directly measure the effect of RNase L on tumour growth in the absence of other IFN-induced proteins, human RNase L cDNA was stably expressed in P-57 cells, an aggressive mouse fibrosarcoma cell line. Three clonal …

Conics In The Hyperbolic Plane, Trent Phillip Naeve Jan 2007

Conics In The Hyperbolic Plane, Trent Phillip Naeve

Theses Digitization Project

An affine transformation such as T(P)=Q is a locus of an affine conic. Any affine conic can be produced from this incidence construction. The affine type of conic (ellipse, parabola, hyperbola) is determined by the invariants of T, the determinant and trace of its linear part. The purpose of this thesis is to obtain a corresponding classification in the hyperbolic plane of conics defined by this construction.

Faculty Publications & Other Works

This article provides reflections on the scope of patentable subject matter, using the Supreme Court's recent consideration of Laboratory Corp. of America Holdings v. Metabolite Laboratories,Inc. as a springboard for discussion. A brief introduction to the case and the current standard of patentable subject matter are provided as a backdrop for discussion of the role of patentable subject matter in the overall scheme of patentability and patent enforcement. In addition, this article addresses potential repercussions of the case within the judicial and legislative arenas. This article concludes byoffering some broad-based issues for consideration, including both domestic and international implications.
