The Strategic Ministry Planning Decision, Mitchell E. Otto
The Strategic Ministry Planning Decision, Mitchell E. Otto
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
After twenty-five years, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church is operating under the same structure that it has relied upon since its birth. On the surface, the structure appears to be working well. Behind the scene, though, it is focused on simply maintaining the congregation as it is, and struggling at that. Instead of preparing for the future of the congregation, the structure simply serves a status quo set down years ago. As a result, the weakest and most vulnerable links in the congregation's framework are under increasing stress.
This Major Applied Project seeks to support the congregation's desire to maintain …

Critical Thinking Traits Of Top-Tier Experts And Implications For Computer Science Education, Dean Bushey
Critical Thinking Traits Of Top-Tier Experts And Implications For Computer Science Education, Dean Bushey
All Dissertations
A documented shortage of technical leadership and top-tier performers in
computer science jeopardizes the technological edge, security, and economic well-being of the nation. The 2005 President's Information and Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC) Report on competitiveness in computational sciences highlights the major impact of science, technology, and innovation in keeping America competitive in the global marketplace. It stresses the fact that the supply of science, technology, and engineering experts is at the core
of America's technological edge, national competitiveness and security. However, recent data shows that both undergraduate and postgraduate production of computer scientists is falling.
Past research on expert performance …
Spatio-Temporal Anomaly Detection For Mobile Devices, Guarav Tandon, Philip K. Chan
Spatio-Temporal Anomaly Detection For Mobile Devices, Guarav Tandon, Philip K. Chan
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
With the increase in popularity of mobile devices, there has been a significant rise in mobile related security problems. The biggest threat for a mobile subscriber is lost or stolen device, which can lead to confidential data leakage, identity theft, misuse, impersonation, and high service charges. A significant amount of time may elapse between losing a device and disabling it through the service provider, during which an unauthorized malicious user may gain access and incur severe damage. We propose a probabilistic approach to spatio-temporal anomaly detection and evaluate smoothing techniques for sparse data. Our approach outperforms Markov Chain in experiments …
The Relationship Between Pragmatic Language And Behavior Subtypes In Typically Developing Children, Lisa Jeppson Christensen
The Relationship Between Pragmatic Language And Behavior Subtypes In Typically Developing Children, Lisa Jeppson Christensen
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the relationship between syntactic and pragmatic language and reticence, solitary-active passive withdrawal, solitary-passive withdrawal, prosocial skills, and likeability. The Children's Communication Checklist (CCC-2), a language checklist, and Teacher Behavior Rating Scale (TBRS), a behavior checklist, were completed by three 2nd-grade teachers and three 4th-grade teachers about each of their students. Factor analysis was used to determine two composite language measures from the CCC-2 scales. The results of two hierarchal regression analyses indicated that social behaviors were significant predictors of pragmatic language, but not structural language. In particular, solitary-passive withdrawal and reticence were significant predictors of pragmatic language …

Mind-Matter For Animals Matters: Science And The Denial Of Animal Consciousness, Estiva Reus, David Olivier
Between the Species
Animal people are usually confident that Cartesianism is something of the past and that modern science clearly establishes that animals are sentient beings. But actually the scientific status of sentience is anything but firmly established. Not only is the subjective point of view absent from current science; it is precluded by construction from our fundamental realms of knowledge. Physics — the mother-science once we reject Cartesian dualism — is currently unable to include sentience in its account of the world. A large part of the philosophy of mind describes a mindless mind, from which subjectivity — feeling, qualia — has …

Ed and Gudrun Wolpow, have had many connections with the Ecklers over the years and add to the celebration of their retirement. "To choose what to say about the Ecklers, well, each word weighs. The French speak of le violon d'Ingres - Ingres' violin - the violin a hobby for the famed painter, but a consuming one. Ross and Faith played our (and their) violins - a delight in our avocational worlds that we sometimes envied for our main callings. Many thanks for this joyful flourish at the edge of our "real" lives - reminding, as in a great painting, …

What Role Should Civil Society Organizations Play To Address Ethnic Conflicts In Ethiopia?, Sisay Gebre-Egziabher
What Role Should Civil Society Organizations Play To Address Ethnic Conflicts In Ethiopia?, Sisay Gebre-Egziabher
International Conference on African Development Archives
The Ethiopian people are ethnically heterogeneous, speaking multiplicity languages comprising of more than 100 groups. Hence, the country presents a mosaic of nationalities, each speaking a dialect of one of more than 70 languages and has a long history of rich culture and strong social values. Although there were some ethnic-conflicts, that go back a long way, among few of the ethnic groups (mainly for control over resources, such as grazing land, water points, cultivable land), people solved such conflicts using their own conflict resolution mechanism; for instance elders meeting and community tribunal system. The indigenous civil society groups have …

The Rise Of A Hispanic Enclave In Davidson County, Tennessee, Jim Chaney
The Rise Of A Hispanic Enclave In Davidson County, Tennessee, Jim Chaney
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In recent years, the United States has observed a significant increase in the Hispanic population within its borders through immigration. Since the 1980s, there has been a shift in the immigration and movement of the Hispanic population from border states to states in the southeastern United States. Many Hispanics, attracted by employment opportunities, have moved into growing metropolitan areas in the American South. In some of these cities, new Hispanic immigrants have created distinct enclaves. These enclaves provide almost all needs for the Hispanic community, such as shopping, healthcare, legal assistance, dining, employment, entertainment, and religion. This study examines the …

The Design And Implementation Of An International Day Project To Foster Cultural Awareness And A Global Perspective In Tukwila Elementary School, Zakariya Salim Palsha
All Graduate Projects
The primary purpose of this project was to successfully design and implement cultural awareness and a global perspective at Tukwila Elementary School utilizing an International Day project, as there are a large number of ethnic groups and various cultures represented in the school. This provided students and parents from different cultures with an avenue to celebrate their own cultural heritage while simultaneously they learned about and celebrated the diverse cultures of the entire school community. The project had five components, which included: 1) a flag ceremony that included forty-nine different flags; 2) cultural dances (performed by students, parents, and community …

Students' Noticing And Incorporation Of Written Feedback: A Snapshot Of Esol Writing Instructors' Commentary On Adult Esol Students' Essays, Heather Leilani Clark
Linguistics & TESOL Theses - Archive
Combining descriptive text analysis with qualitative interviews, the current study addresses the student-teacher written feedback interaction. Reflecting upon the existing debate within second language acquisition research, which focuses on the interface, or non-interface, of conscious and unconscious learning, the first part of the study investigates the role of noticing. Using teacher written commentary on student essays, learners are asked to identify the existence, boundaries, and nature of errors in their interviews. Student interviews are also used to articulate student perspectives on the purposes of feedback. This data illuminates differing opinions between students and teachers. Student essays are further used to …
An Artificial Immune System Based Approach For English Grammar Correction, Akshat Kumar, Shivashankar B. Nair
An Artificial Immune System Based Approach For English Grammar Correction, Akshat Kumar, Shivashankar B. Nair
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Grammar checking and correction comprise of the primary problems in the area of Natural Language Processing (NLP). Traditional approaches fall into two major categories: Rule based and Corpus based. While the former relies heavily on grammar rules the latter approach is statistical in nature. We provide a novel corpus based approach for grammar checking that uses the principles of an Artificial Immune System (AIS).We treat grammatical error as pathogens (in immunological terms) and build antibody detectors capable of detecting grammatical errors while allowing correct constructs to filter through. Our results show that it is possible to detect a range of …
Cross-Nativity Marriages, Gender, And Human Capital Levels Of Children, Delia Furtado
Cross-Nativity Marriages, Gender, And Human Capital Levels Of Children, Delia Furtado
Economics Working Papers
Because the demographic composition of todays immigrants to the US differs so much from those of natives, immigrants may be less likely to socially integrate into U.S. society, and specically less likely to marry natives. This paper explores the relationship between immigrants' marriage patterns and the academic outcomes of their children. Using 2000 Census data, it is found that while marital decisions of foreign born females do not affect their children's academic success, foreign born males that marry foreign born females are less likely to have children that are high school dropouts. These relationships remain after using various methods to …
