Verb Contraction In The West Saxon Dialect Of Old English: An Optimality Theory Account, Melinda Mix Jan 2007

Verb Contraction In The West Saxon Dialect Of Old English: An Optimality Theory Account, Melinda Mix

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The phenomena of verb contraction in the West Saxon dialect of Old English has been described in many grammars of the language. However, most of these use a traditional rule-based analysis of the sound changes which occur. This thesis re-analyzes the data in terms of Optimality Theory (OT), which uses a system of constraint ranking to account for sound changes. The advantage of using OT is that it offers a single ranking to explain sound changes that would require separate rules and ordering in a more traditional analysis. Section 1 introduces the motivation for approaching this data from OT. Section …

Small Robe Band Of Blackfeet: Ethnogenesis By Social And Religious Transformation, Linda Matt Juneau Jan 2007

Small Robe Band Of Blackfeet: Ethnogenesis By Social And Religious Transformation, Linda Matt Juneau

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

One of the most significant challenges facing Native Americans and their indigenous identity is a greater understanding of the historical complexity of relationships that interconnected ethnically diverse populations across geographic landscapes. This thesis examines the range of Blackfoot political, social, economic structures, spiritual beliefs, and practices that were in place at the time of Euro-American contact. I use historically documented evidence of transformations that took place from the beginning of the fur trade era through the reservation era. Through the theoretical lens of ethnogenesis I use a case study of the Small Robe (Inuck’siks) band of the South Piegan of …

An Interlinear Analysis Of Seven Kalispel Texts From Hans Vogt, Kelsi Camp

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis is an interlinearization of seven Kalispel texts originally published in 1940 by Hans Vogt. The texts were published with sentence-by-sentence English translations but were not further analyzed by Vogt. Here, they are analyzed at the morpheme level, providing data for further research on the language and for language documentation and preservation purposes. The thesis includes an introductory section with background and methodology, the interlinearized texts, and a list of stems, affixes, and roots occurring in the texts.

Executive Power And The Political Constitution, Richard H. Fallon Jr. Jan 2007

Executive Power And The Political Constitution, Richard H. Fallon Jr.

Utah Law Review

At the present time, it seems safe to assume that in any case in which the President defied a direct judicial order, Congress and the people would begin with strong presumptions that it was lawless and unconstitutional for the President to disobey and that a lawless President cannot be tolerated. In acceding to direct judicial mandates in nearly all cases in constitutional history, presidents have probably made political as well as legal calculations in at least some instances. In other words, they have likely complied with judicial orders, not only because they felt that the Constitution obliged them to do …

Home And School Literacy Partnerships : Building Stronger Tomorrows Hand In Hand, Tera Bockenstedt Jan 2007

Home And School Literacy Partnerships : Building Stronger Tomorrows Hand In Hand, Tera Bockenstedt

Graduate Research Papers

This project aims to bring quality literacy interactions into homes of young children. These literacy interactions are important because research has shown that quality literacy experiences during the early childhood years impact a child's emergent literacy learning. Because children are not yet in formal schooling, many of these interactions can take place in home so family involvement is critical. The project is threefold: (a) to increase the quantity and quality of literacy interactions in the home, (b) to help parents become more informed contributors of their children's emergent literacy development, and (c) to promote more family involvement and two-way communication …

Identity Exploration In The Secondary Esl Setting, Sarah Wait Jan 2007

Identity Exploration In The Secondary Esl Setting, Sarah Wait

Graduate Research Papers

The investigation of the process of identity development is very complex, as a multitude of background information and influencing factors must be considered before suggestions can be made for incorporating identity exploration into a secondary school setting. Chapter One sets the groundwork for this investigation by first describing the nature of the issue and generally introducing topics which will be explored in later chapters. The research question is stated, then expanded upon to include the factors one must consider when attempting to answer the research question. The chapter continues by explaining the significance of the problem, as established in both …

Instructional Recommendations For The Teaching Of Writing, Bridgette Wagoner Jan 2007

Instructional Recommendations For The Teaching Of Writing, Bridgette Wagoner

Graduate Research Papers

Clearly, writing is an essential life, work, and educational skill, and far too many students without essential writing skills are receiving high school diplomas. These realities put many recent high school graduates at a disadvantage in personal, professional, and educational arenas. Writing skills are simply too important to be ignored. This reality begs an important question: Which instructional approaches are likely to lead to improved student writing? For the purposes of this paper, research will center mainly on controlled studies, though much insight also stands to be gained from studies of what writers and teachers of writing have to say …

Three Pictures Of Contract: Duty, Power And Compound Rule, Gregory Klass Jan 2007

Three Pictures Of Contract: Duty, Power And Compound Rule, Gregory Klass

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

A fundamental divide among theories of contract law is between those that picture contract as a power and those that picture it as a duty. On the power-conferring picture, contracting is a sort of legislative act, in which persons determine what law will apply to their transaction. On the duty-imposing picture, contract law puts duties on persons entering into agreements for consideration whether they want them or not. Until now, very little attention has been paid to the problem of how to tell whether a given rule is power conferring or duty imposing -- a question that should lie at …

‘Plucking The Mask Of Mystery From Its Face’: Jurisprudence And H.L.A. Hart, John Mikhail Jan 2007

‘Plucking The Mask Of Mystery From Its Face’: Jurisprudence And H.L.A. Hart, John Mikhail

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Until recently, little was known of H.L.A. Hart's private life. That has now changed with the publication of Nicola Lacey's A Life of H.L.A. Hart: The Nightmare and the Noble Dream. Drawing on Hart's notebooks and correspondence, Lacey paints an illuminating portrait of Hart, which reveals that despite his public success he struggled with internal perplexities, including his sexual orientation, Jewish identity, intellectual insecurity, and unconventional marriage. Yet, as critics have noted, the connection between these revelations and the development of Hart's ideas is unclear. Moreover, one cannot help but wonder whether by focusing on these aspects of Hart's personal …

Desirable Characteristics Of Learning Companions, Yanghee Kim Jan 2007

Desirable Characteristics Of Learning Companions, Yanghee Kim

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

This study investigated the desirable characteristics of anthropomorphized learning-companion agents for college students. First, interviews with six undergraduates explored their concepts of desirable learning companions. The interviews yielded agent competency, agent personality, and interaction control. Next, a controlled experiment examined whether learner competency (strong vs. weak) would relate directly to agent competency (high vs. low) and to interaction control (agent-control vs. learner-control). The dependent measures included learners' perceptions of agent functionality, their self-efficacy beliefs in the task, and their learning. The results indicated that academically strong students perceived the high-competent agent higher than the lowcompetent agent and showed higher self-efficacy …

Using The Novel To Teach Multiculturalism, Michelle Loris Jan 2007

Using The Novel To Teach Multiculturalism, Michelle Loris

English Faculty Publications

Description of a fourteen week course taught by Michelle Loris, professor of English at Sacred Heart University. The course, titled Recent Ethnic American Fictions, introduced students to several concepts from contemporary literary theory. The theories included New Criticism, Deconstruction, Cultural Studies, New Historicism, and Feminist Theory. The assumption was that these concepts would give students the tools to become critical readers, which would then provide them with a deeper understanding of these multicultural novels and their particular cultural contexts.

For a semester, reading and thinking about these multicultural novels engaged and challenged the students' assumptions about themselves and the …

Beyond Chord-Scale Theory - Realizing A Species Approach To Jazz Improvisation, Keith Salley Jan 2007

Beyond Chord-Scale Theory - Realizing A Species Approach To Jazz Improvisation, Keith Salley

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

Collegiate instruction in jazz improvisation is typically given in two places: the jazz theory classroom and private lessons. In both contexts, one of the first concepts taught is the relationship between chord and scale. I distinguish the term "scale" in the classical sense from the term "chord scale." The former refers to a stepwise collection of pitches that expresses a tonal center. The latter refers to a stepwise collection of pitches that melodically expresses a chord. A harmonic progression contains all of the pitches in a major scale, and the progression could easily support a melody that expresses all of …

Subverting Justice: An Indictment Of The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, Kim Mccoy Jan 2007

Subverting Justice: An Indictment Of The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, Kim Mccoy

Animal Law Review

The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA) creates yet another obstacle for the animal advocacy movement. This article explores the reasons behind the AETA’s enactment and its implications for those who advocate on behalf of animals. The author notes the AETA targets individuals based solely on their political ideology and can deter these individuals from exercising their right to free speech due to the threat of being permanently branded as a terrorist. It is this infringement on First Amendment rights, coupled with the AETA’s overbreadth and vagueness, that lead the author to conclude the AETA is unconstitutional. The author also notes …

Comparative Constitutional Advocacy , Mark C. Rahdert Jan 2007

Comparative Constitutional Advocacy , Mark C. Rahdert

American University Law Review

When the Supreme Court handed down its decision in Roper v. Simmons, a longstanding debate about comparative analysis in constitutional cases came to national prominence. In Roper the Court relied in part on comparative precedent in ruling that the execution of juvenile offenders violates the Eighth Amendment's proscription against cruel and unusual punishment. This look beyond our borders earned the Supreme Court both accolades and scathing criticism. This article comprehensively evaluates the place of comparative analysis in our constitutional jurisprudence. It discusses and adds to the arguments in support of comparative constitutional advocacy offered by several leading scholars, and responds …

Time In Navajo: Direct And Indirect Interpretation, C. Smith, E. Perkins, Theodore B. Fernald Jan 2007

Time In Navajo: Direct And Indirect Interpretation, C. Smith, E. Perkins, Theodore B. Fernald

Linguistics Faculty Works

This article discusses the temporal interpretation of Navajo sentences. Navajo has linguistic forms that give temporal information: future tense, past and future particles, and temporal adverbials. These forms are optional, so that many sentences contain no direct temporal information. In such cases, aspectual information gives pragmatic cues to the temporal location of the situation expressed. The key factor is boundedness: in the default case, unbounded situations are taken as present and bounded situations as past. Three pragmatic principles explain the inference from aspect to temporal location. The principles, which also hold for certain other languages, apply to verb words with …

When Languages Die: The Extinction Of The World's Languages And The Erosion Of Human Knowledge, K. David Harrison Jan 2007

When Languages Die: The Extinction Of The World's Languages And The Erosion Of Human Knowledge, K. David Harrison

Linguistics Faculty Works

In When Languages Die, K. David Harrison illustrates the individual face of language loss, as well as its global scale. Languages are the accretion of thousands of years of a people's science and art - from observations of ecological patterns to creation myths. The author shows that the disappearance of a language is a loss not only for the community of speakers itself but also for our common human knowledge of mathematics, biology, geography, philosophy, agriculture, and linguistics. In this century, we face a massive erosion of the human knowledge base. The global abandonment of indigenous languages will bring a …

The Clinical Utility Of Mlu And Ipsyn For Aae-Speaking Children, Emily Lee Jones Jan 2007

The Clinical Utility Of Mlu And Ipsyn For Aae-Speaking Children, Emily Lee Jones

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the clinical utility of two assessment measures for one group of nonstandard English dialect speakers, that of African-American English- (AAE) speaking children. The measures were mean length of utterance (MLU) and Index of Productive Syntax (IPSyn). The clinical utility of these measures was examined by comparing MLU and IPSyn values of three different groups of AAE speakers to determine if these measures are influenced by a child’s socio-economic status, dialect status, and/or clinical language status. An item analysis was also completed for IPSyn to determine if the items on this tool are …

Originalism And The Natural Born Citizen Clause, Lawrence B. Solum Jan 2007

Originalism And The Natural Born Citizen Clause, Lawrence B. Solum

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The enigmatic phrase "natural born citizen" poses a series of problems for contemporary originalism. New originalists, like Justice Scalia, focus on the public meaning of the constitutional text, but the notion of a "natural born citizen" was likely a term of art, derived from the idea of a "natural born subject" in English law--a category that most likely did not extend to persons, like John McCain, who were born outside sovereign territory. But the constitution speaks of "citizens" and not "subjects," introducing uncertainties and ambiguities that might (or might not) make McCain eligible for the presidency.

What was the original …
