Review Of Cursed From Birth: The Short, Unhappy Life Of William S. Burroughs Jr., By William S. Burroughs, Jr., Alan Clinton Jan 2007

Review Of Cursed From Birth: The Short, Unhappy Life Of William S. Burroughs Jr., By William S. Burroughs, Jr., Alan Clinton

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

William S. Burroughs Jr. was the son of the author of Naked Lunch and Joan Vollmer, whom his father accidentally (at least consciously speaking) shot in a "William Tell act" in Mexico City. He was also, in his own words, "the author of two novels [Speed and Kentucky Ham] published in seven languages, and numerous articles in national magazines." The title of this latest incarnation from Soft Skull Press casts Burroughs Jr. in the tradition of the poètes maudites and, interestingly, in relation to a short story by Ernest Hemingway about a woman who "accidentally" shoots …

Unruly Corporeality: Aids, Immigration And The Imagined Australian Body, Zoë Anderson Jan 2007

Unruly Corporeality: Aids, Immigration And The Imagined Australian Body, Zoë Anderson

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Particular bodies within the Australian nation can be seen to threaten to disrupt and destabilize dominant notions of cultural citizenship. Understood through intricate intersections of ethnicity, gender and sexuality, 'Australianness' - and its correlation to the geographical nation - is constantly monitored. Crucial here is the manner in which boundaries of whiteness, and 'true Australianess', are reconstituted, fuelling avoidance of the ambiguities of national belonging and ensuring the enduring pathologisation of the 'un'Australian. In particular, discursive associations between HIV/AIDS and the 'foreign' as perceived contaminates to the nation operate to reinforce these understandings. Here, the threat of disease both informs, …

A Program Evaluation Research Study On The Implementation Of The Mentors In Violence Prevention Program In A Public High School: A Dissertation, Nancy G. Beardall

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

The Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) Program is the subject of this research study. MVP is a high school leadership and mentoring program that focuses on promoting gender respect and preventing harassment, sexual harassment and teen dating abuse in middle schools and high schools. This program evaluation study of the MVP program utilizes both quantitative and qualitative data. The findings suggest the MVP training supports the mentors in their ability to become active bystanders and leaders in this work, not only in the short term and while they are in the program, but over the long term, when they are …

Talk Among The Dragonflies And Dalmations: An Investigation Of Communicative Competence In A Pre-Kindergarten Classroom: A Dissertation, Lauren Foley Goldberg Jan 2007

Talk Among The Dragonflies And Dalmations: An Investigation Of Communicative Competence In A Pre-Kindergarten Classroom: A Dissertation, Lauren Foley Goldberg

Educational Studies Dissertations

A year-long ethnographic study of young children's language was conducted in a pre-kindergarten classroom. The investigation focused on the teachers' direct instruction and the children's emerging communicative competence in the rules and structure of group conversation. The class "Morning Meeting" was recorded once or twice a week for the entire year; a subset of these recordings formed the data set for the analysis. Of particular interest were communication behaviors that emphasized the growth of a sense of membership and community within the group as well as evidence that the children had learned conventions for turn-taking, topic maintenance, and solidarity.

Review Of Creating Language Crimes: How Law Enforcement Uses (And Misuses) Language By Roger W. Shuy, Frank Bramlett Jan 2007

Review Of Creating Language Crimes: How Law Enforcement Uses (And Misuses) Language By Roger W. Shuy, Frank Bramlett

English Faculty Publications

As he states in his preface, Shuy draws on his 30+ years as a linguistics professor at Georgetown University and his 25+ years as an expert witness and legal consultant to create this text that spans the mundane and the riveting, the commonplace and the esoterica of forensic linguistics. In so doing, his book “describes twelve actual cases in which alleged crimes were actually created by the use of various conversational strategies employed by law enforcement and its representatives, where no such crime is actually indicated by the language evidence” (12). When we read the transcripts associated with these cases, …

The Functional Range Of Bare Singular Count Nouns In English, Laurel Smith Stvan Jan 2007

The Functional Range Of Bare Singular Count Nouns In English, Laurel Smith Stvan

Linguistics & TESOL Faculty Publications & Presentations - Archive

One overlooked and highly polysemous English noun phrase form is the bare singular, i.e. a null determiner with a singular count noun complement. Occurring in all grammatical positions, this constituent shape is used in English for multiple functions. Examination of naturally occurring English data shows the conditions under which bare singulars are used as generics (with a meaning like bare plurals), as components of a predicate conveying a stereotypical activity (with an indefinite meaning), and as markers of an identifiable referent (like nouns with definite articles, demonstratives, and possessive determiners). While generic and indefinite meanings are well documented for bare …

Language And The Shaping Of The Arab-American Identity, Dalal Saleh Almubayei Jan 2007

Language And The Shaping Of The Arab-American Identity, Dalal Saleh Almubayei

UTA Working Papers in Linguistics - Archive

This study is an attempt to shed light on the interaction between language and the ethnic, cultural, and religious identities of Arab-Americans. It employs two focus groups consisting of Arab-Americans who share a group dialogue about the aspects of language and identity. The groups differ in terms of two variables: age and generation. Participants shared their experiences, life stories, feelings, and perspectives about the role of Arabic and English in their lives. The older participants emphasized a concern of language and ethnic identity loss among their U.S. born children, while younger participants talked about the importance of Arabic to belong …

Preliminary Tone Analysis Of Possessed Nouns In Chicahuaxtla Trique, Kosuke Matsukawa Jan 2007

Preliminary Tone Analysis Of Possessed Nouns In Chicahuaxtla Trique, Kosuke Matsukawa

UTA Working Papers in Linguistics - Archive

Chicahuaxtla Trique is one of the Trique languages spoken in Oaxaca, Mexico. Among three Trique languages, Chicahuaxtla Trique has the most complicated tone system and its tone system has not been fully understood yet. When a noun is possessed, a contrastive tone on the final syllable of a noun stem is often changed with a post-clitic pronoun and, less frequently, with an independent pronoun in Chicahuaxtla Trique. In this paper, I will analyze the tone patterns for possessed nouns in Chicahuaxtla Trique based on my fieldwork data. Although the analysis is still at the preliminary stage and more comprehensive data …

Improving Student Performance Through The Use Of Graphic Organizers, Marie-France M. Nothnagle Jan 2007

Improving Student Performance Through The Use Of Graphic Organizers, Marie-France M. Nothnagle

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

This study evaluated the effectiveness of the use of a graphic organizer notebook in a French II classroom of a suburban high school in Oklahoma City. Students from 2 different classes were given either a partially completed or an empty graphic organizer notebook to help them review important concepts learned in French I. Students' learning was evaluated through the administration of a test before and after review. As expected, student test scores after review improved greatly compared to their pre-test scores. Although the type of notebook used did not significantly impact test scores , qualitative data showed that all students …

Literacy Techniques And Ways To Improve Writing In Technology, David C. Lucania

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

Teaching Technology in today's classroom presents many challenges; from the safety of the students using machinery to the integration of the latest technology in class. This study goes beyond those challenges and looks at integrating literacy and writing techniques in a classroom other than English. It has become more and more important to be able to speak, read, and write well. Especially in todays technologically advanced society. This study looks at ways to increase literacy as well as what exactly literacy is and how it can be utilized in the classroom. Also, it goes over strategies to increase literacy as …

Lyotard, Beckett, Duras, And The Postmodern Sublime, Andrew Slade Jan 2007

Lyotard, Beckett, Duras, And The Postmodern Sublime, Andrew Slade

English Faculty Publications

Samuel Beckett's texts are populated with characters who have been so deprived of their humanity that humanity appears as essentially absent from his texts. The characters' presence in the diegesis is marked by unmistakable absences-absence of vision, of mobility, of sense, of name. Beckett's characters are often without: without hair, without teeth, without foreseeable future. The human character is at the limit of humanity and runs the risk of passing over into the grey zone of the inhuman. They lose track of their place, of their time, of their names. They frequently belong to no time and no place. When …

Discussion On Effective Restoration Of Oral Speech Using Voice Conversion Techniques Based On Gaussian Mixture Modeling, Gustavo Alverio Jan 2007

Discussion On Effective Restoration Of Oral Speech Using Voice Conversion Techniques Based On Gaussian Mixture Modeling, Gustavo Alverio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Today's world consists of many ways to communicate information. One of the most effective ways to communicate is through the use of speech. Unfortunately many lose the ability to converse. This in turn leads to a large negative psychological impact. In addition, skills such as lecturing and singing must now be restored via other methods. The usage of text-to-speech synthesis has been a popular resolution of restoring the capability to use oral speech. Text to speech synthesizers convert text into speech. Although text to speech systems are useful, they only allow for few default voice selections that do not represent …

Optimizing The Design Of Multimodal User Interfaces, Leah Reeves Jan 2007

Optimizing The Design Of Multimodal User Interfaces, Leah Reeves

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to a current lack of principle-driven multimodal user interface design guidelines, designers may encounter difficulties when choosing the most appropriate display modality for given users or specific tasks (e.g., verbal versus spatial tasks). The development of multimodal display guidelines from both a user and task domain perspective is thus critical to the achievement of successful human-system interaction. Specifically, there is a need to determine how to design task information presentation (e.g., via which modalities) to capitalize on an individual operator's information processing capabilities and the inherent efficiencies associated with redundant sensory information, thereby alleviating information overload. The present effort …

Cost-Benefit Analysis Without Analyzing Costs Or Benefits: Reasonable Accommodation, Balancing, And Stigmatic Harms, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2007

Cost-Benefit Analysis Without Analyzing Costs Or Benefits: Reasonable Accommodation, Balancing, And Stigmatic Harms, Cass R. Sunstein

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Is an accommodation “reasonable,” under the Americans with Disabilities Act, if and only if the benefits are roughly proportional to the costs? How should benefits and costs be assessed? Should courts asks about how much disabled employees are willing to pay to obtain the accommodation, or instead how much they would have to be paid not to have the accommodation? How should stigmatic or expressive harms be valued? This essay, written for a symposium on the work of Judge Richard A. Posner, engages these questions in a discussion of an important opinion in which Judge Posner denied accommodations involving the …

Moore's Paradoxes And Iterated Belief, John N. Williams Jan 2007

Moore's Paradoxes And Iterated Belief, John N. Williams

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

I give an account of the absurdity of Moorean beliefs of the omissive form (om) p and I don’t believe that p, and the commissive form (com) p and I believe that not-p, from which I extract a definition of Moorean absurdity. I then argue for an account of the absurdity of Moorean assertion. After neutralizing two objections to my whole account, I show that Roy Sorensen’s own account of the absurdity of his ‘iterated cases’ (om1) p and I don’t believe that I believe that p, and (com1) p and I believe that I believe that not-p, is unsatisfactory. …

Fighting Discrimination While Fighting Litigation: A Tale Of Two Supreme Courts, Scott A. Moss Jan 2007

Fighting Discrimination While Fighting Litigation: A Tale Of Two Supreme Courts, Scott A. Moss

Fordham Law Review

The U.S. Supreme Court has issued an odd mix of pro-plaintiff and pro-defendant employment law rulings. It has disallowed harassment lawsuits against employers even with failed antiharassment efforts, construed statutes of limitations narrowly to bar suits about ongoing promotion and pay discrimination, and denied protection to public employee internal complaints. Yet the same Court has issued significant unanimous rulings easing discrimination plaintiffs' burdens of proof. This jurisprudence is often miscast in simple pro-plaintiff or pro-defendant terms. The Court's duality traces to its inconsistent and unaware adoption of competing policy arguments: Policy 1: Employees must try internal dispute resolution before suing--or …

Three Points Of The Phonics Triangle: An Equilateral Relationship Among Pseudoword Reading, Name Reading, And Spelling, Annmarie Petrozzelli Jan 2007

Three Points Of The Phonics Triangle: An Equilateral Relationship Among Pseudoword Reading, Name Reading, And Spelling, Annmarie Petrozzelli

Master's Theses and Capstones

This study evaluates the relationship among three commonly administered phonics measures. "Pseudoword Decoding," a norm-referenced assessment from Wechsler Individual Assessment Test - II (WIAT-II), the "Primary Spelling Inventory" and the "Names Test," criterion-referenced instruments, were administered to a general population of 56 second-grade students with mixed reading abilities. The "Elision" subtest, a norm referenced assessment from the "Phonological Awareness" composite on the Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing (CTOPP), was also administered to all 56 students to discover whether the phonics measures correlated with it. Pearson product moment correlations were used to compare the four measures. Significant correlations were found among …

The Criminalization Of Treating End Of Life Patients With Risky Pain Medication And The Role Of The Extreme Emergency Situation, Gina Castellano Jan 2007

The Criminalization Of Treating End Of Life Patients With Risky Pain Medication And The Role Of The Extreme Emergency Situation, Gina Castellano

Fordham Law Review

This Note examines the legality of physicians treating patients near the end of life with risky pain medication, specifically during an extreme emergency situation. The issues discussed include whether such treatment should be criminalized and, if criminalized, what standard should be used to determine culpability. This Note proposes that physicians should not be shielded from the criminal justice system, but that the standard of double effect intent should be expressly adopted in the adjudication of such cases.
