Preservice Teachers' Confidence In Teaching Students With Disabilities: Addressing The Intasc Principles, Amelia Jenkins Ph.D., Cecily Ornelles Ph.D.
Preservice Teachers' Confidence In Teaching Students With Disabilities: Addressing The Intasc Principles, Amelia Jenkins Ph.D., Cecily Ornelles Ph.D.
Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education
A survey was developed from the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium’s (INTASC) ten principles that specify what all general and special education teachers should know and be able to do to teach students with disabilities. Two groups of students, those in a general education only and a dual elementary/special education program, were surveyed. Teacher candidates in the general education program scored significantly lower across all variables as compared to those who were completing the dual preparation program. These results, similar to studies of general education teachers, indicate general education preservice teachers need more training concerning students with disabilities.
The Multimodal Production Of Common Ground Understandings In Intercultural Flight Training, Saeko Nomura, Edwin Hutchins
The Multimodal Production Of Common Ground Understandings In Intercultural Flight Training, Saeko Nomura, Edwin Hutchins
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2007
In this paper we show how Japanese airline pilots and American flight instructors overcome pronounced differences in language and culture and achieve effective collaboration. They do this by drawing on a deep body of shared professional pilot culture and by exploiting richly multimodality situated communication practices to produce common ground understandings.
What Boys And Girls Learn Through Song: A Content Analysis Of Gender Traits And Sex Bias In Two Choral Classroom Textbooks, Patrick J. Hawkins
What Boys And Girls Learn Through Song: A Content Analysis Of Gender Traits And Sex Bias In Two Choral Classroom Textbooks, Patrick J. Hawkins
Research & Issues in Music Education
In an effort to further the understanding of gender traits or sexual bias that high school-aged choral music students might be exposed to in their curricular materials, two choral textbooks Choral Connections Beginning Level 1 Treble Voices and Choral Connections Beginning Level 1 Tenor-Bass Voices published by Glencoe MacGraw-Hill in 1999 were analyzed using a modified Bem Sex Role Inventory Model. The results found that significantly more songs were about men than were about women. The songs selected for the treble voices were more androgynous, while the secular music presented to the boys was significantly more masculine in the traits: …

An Ecological Assessment Of Property And Violent Crime Rates Across A Latino Urban Landscape: The Role Of Social Disorganization And Institutional Anomie Theory, Jeffrey Michael Cancino, Sean P. Varano, Joseph A. Schafer, Roger Enriquez
Justice Studies Faculty Publications
The present research put forth an integrated theoretical framework aimed at providing a more holistic community- level approach explaining crime across a heavily populated Latino city. Guided by social disorganization and institutional anomie theory, this study used several data sources and OLS regression techniques to examine the impact of social disorganization, economic and noneconomic institutional characteristics on rates of property and violent crime across 1,016 census block groups in San Antonio, Texas. While several findings emerged, interactions between alcohol density and concentrated disadvantage were significant and positively associated with property and violent crime. Interactions between welfare generosity and concentrated disadvantage …

Development Of A Semi-Active Car Suspension Control System Using Magneto-Rheological Damper Model, M.M. Rashid, Mohd Azlan Hussain, N. Abd Rahim, J.S. Momoh
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
In this paper, the development of a semi- active suspension control of quarter car model using fuzzy-based controller has been done. The quarter car model to be used here can be described as a nonlinear two degrees of freedom system which is subject to excitation from different road profile. The semi-active control is designed as the fuzzy control inferred by using two single input rule fuzzy modules, and the road model is used as the control force is released by actuating an electromagnetic shaker. To implement semi-active suspension system experimentally, the MR damper is used here as the adjustable damper. …

Direct Instruction With Playful Skill Extensions: Action Research In Emergent Literacy Development, Jean M. Keaton, Barbara C. Palmer, Karen R. Nicholas, Vickie E. Lake
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Direct instruction teaching methods have been found to promote the acquisition of literacy in developing readers. Equally important, learning strategies that allow children to construct knowledge through active participation increase their motivation for reading and writing. This action research was designed to explore the effectiveness of direct instruction with playful extensions in developing emergent literacy in a kindergarten classroom. The intent of the project was to connect developmentally appropriate practices with direct instruction teaching. The systematic approach of Peer Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS) was followed using only the teacher directed lessons; playful extensions of the PALS lessons were integrated throughout …
Shari`Ah Compliance Risk, Yusuf Talal Delorenzo
Shari`Ah Compliance Risk, Yusuf Talal Delorenzo
Chicago Journal of International Law
At a time when interest in Islamic finance is growing, it is important to understand how Shari'ah-based considerations may impact a business or a transaction, as well as measuring, classifying, and quantifying the sorts of risks associated with Shari'ah compliance. Clearly, being able to identify and to understand Shari'ah compliance risk is an important key to providing a consistent framework for managing that risk. Emphasizing this importance is the relatively recent emergence of Islamic finance and its continuing efforts to develop industry standards and best practices. Indeed, as this Article will explain, there is much that remains to be accomplished …

Can Reinforcement Induce Children To Falsely Incriminate Themselves?, F. Billings, Tanya Taylor, James Burns, Deb Corey, Sena Garven, James Wood
Departmental Papers (Psych)
This study examined whether reinforcement can induce children to falsely incriminate themselves. Ninety-nine children in kindergarten through third grade were questioned regarding the staged theft of a toy. Half received reinforcement for self-incriminating responses. Within 4 minutes reinforced children made 52% false admissions of guilty knowledge concerning the theft, and 43% false admissions of having witnessed it. Corresponding figures for controls were 36% and 25%. Twelve percent of children admitted to participating in the theft, but the effect of reinforcement was only marginally significant. The findings suggest that reinforcement can sometimes induce children to falsely implicate themselves in wrongdoing.

Reading Words In Spanish And English: Mapping Orthography To Phonology In Two Languages, Ana Schwartz, Judith Kroll, Michele Diaz
Departmental Papers (Psych)
English-Spanish bilinguals named visually presented words aloud in each language. The words included cognates (e.g., fruit-fruta) and non-cognate translations, (e.g., pencil-lápiz). The cognates were selected so that the orthographic and phonological similarity of their lexical form in each language varied orthogonally. Cognate naming latencies were influenced by the cross-language match of the orthographic and phonological codes. When the orthographic forms were similar in the two languages, naming latencies were slowed by dissimilar phonology, providing evidence for feed-forward activation from orthography to phonology across languages. When the orthographic forms were dissimilar, the effects of the corresponding phonological match were not statistically …

Can Direct Vocabulary Instruction Increase Student's Background Knowledge In Mathematics?, Shannon K. Wood
Can Direct Vocabulary Instruction Increase Student's Background Knowledge In Mathematics?, Shannon K. Wood
Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters
A common problem found among classrooms is the lack of effective direct vocabulary instruction. A strong correlation has been found between a student's knowledge of vocabulary and their academic achievement. Content area vocabulary, particularly mathematics vocabulary, has been found to be some of the most difficult concepts for children to master. Direct vocabulary instruction has been studied, and six common characteristics have been found to be effective when implemented in the classroom. These six characteristics were implemented in a 5th grade classroom during a preexisting math unit on geometry. Student engagement and comprehension increased throughout this unit. As a result, …
Transgression Or Stasis? Challenging Foucault In Lis Theory, John Buschman
Transgression Or Stasis? Challenging Foucault In Lis Theory, John Buschman
Library Publications
Michel Foucault (1926–84) is a primary thinker informing the construction of a critical theory of library and information science (LIS), or librarianship. He is widely cited and is adapted in various ways that focus on LIS forms of power, discourse, and so on. Others have addressed Foucault’s topics, but he remains central. Li- brarianship has taken up a prior challenge to more fully explore his work, and it is now time to carefully review the implications of Foucault’s thinking as a foun- dation for a critical-theoretical LIS. Foucault has undergone extensive analysis and critique, and this article is a similar …

Teaching Creativity In A Multiple Intelligence Technology Education Classroom, Ralph J. Pizzo
Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters
Teaching in a technology education classroom presents many challenges for today's technology teacher. Teachers are expected to differentiate lessons, activities, and assessments in order to permit a broader range of students to be successful. The purpose of this study was to investigate creative learning approaches when teaching in a multi-level intelligence technology education classroom. This study focused on a small sample of technology education classrooms and their integration of Gardner's Multiple Intelligences and creativity in the classroom.
Implementation Of Technology To Enhance Middle School Student Understanding Of Quadratic Relationships, Daniel R. List Jr.
Implementation Of Technology To Enhance Middle School Student Understanding Of Quadratic Relationships, Daniel R. List Jr.
Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters
In order to ascertain whether timing and placement of technology within a mathematics unit had any effect on student thinking and understanding, two sets of students were observed during a unit on quadratic relationships. The first group was given instruction in a traditional foundation of quadratics and subsequently incorporated the use of graphing calculators into their knowledge base. The second group learned how to use the calculators for exploring quadratics first and then was taught the theoretical foundation to solidify understanding. It was found that the timing and placement of the introduction of graphing calculators into the unit did impact …

Repositioning Students In Initial Teacher Preparation: A Comparative Descriptive Analysis Of Learning To Teach For Social Justice In The United States And In England, Alison Cook-Sather, Bernadette Youens
Repositioning Students In Initial Teacher Preparation: A Comparative Descriptive Analysis Of Learning To Teach For Social Justice In The United States And In England, Alison Cook-Sather, Bernadette Youens
Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship
Discussions of learning to teach for social justice generally focus on the social commitments, institutional structures, course content, and pedagogical processes that support prospective teachers. Missing from this array of foci is a consideration of how school students are positioned within teacher preparation and how their positioning and participation can inform prospective teachers’ preparation to teach for social justice. In this article, the authors present a comparative descriptive analysis of two projects, one based in the United States and one based in England, that provide opportunities through which prospective secondary teachers are prepared to teach for social justice through direct …

Exclusionary Rule And Causation: Hudson V. Michigan And Its Ancestors, The, Albert W. Alschuler

In Hudson v. Michigan, the Supreme Court held that evidence need not be excluded despite the fact that the police had violated the Fourth Amendment by failing to knock and announce their presence before conducting a search. The Court said that the constitutional violation was not a but-for cause of the seizure; the police would have obtained the evidence even if they had knocked. Hudson's analysis threatens to withdraw the exclusionary remedy whenever the police have conducted a search in an unconstitutional manner-most notably, when they have failed to obtain a warrant before searching. The Court's decision is likely to …
