A Behavior Analytic Look At Contemporary Issues In The Assessment Of Child Sexual Abuse, W. Joseph Wyatt
A Behavior Analytic Look At Contemporary Issues In The Assessment Of Child Sexual Abuse, W. Joseph Wyatt
Psychology Faculty Research
The assessment of child sexual abuse has largely been ignored by behavior analysts, although behavior analytic theory and methodology, if applied, likely would advance the field. Three classic cases demonstrate historic errors that might have been avoided, had a behaviorally based approach been employed. Functional analytic interpretations are provided for phenomena that have been explored in a representative sample of studies that, though empirical, do not appear in the behavioral literature. Specific recommendations for practice, and a call for greater involvement of behavior analysis, are presented.

Shoshonean Peoples And The Overland Trails, Dale L. Morgan
Shoshonean Peoples And The Overland Trails, Dale L. Morgan
All USU Press Publications
This compilation of Dale Morgan's historical work on Indians in the Intermountain West focuses primarily on the Shoshone who lived near the Oregon and California trails.
Three connected works by Morgan are included: First is his classic article on the history of the Utah Superintendency of Indian Affairs. This is followed by a previously unpublished history of early relations among the Western Shoshoni, emigrants, and the government along the California Trail. The book concludes with an important set of government reports and correspondence from the National Archives concerning the Eastern Shoshone and their leader Washakie. Morgan heavily annotated these for …
Unit Of Luminous Flux: Mario Botta's Centre Dürrenmatt Neuchâtel, Andreas Luescher
Unit Of Luminous Flux: Mario Botta's Centre Dürrenmatt Neuchâtel, Andreas Luescher
Architecture and Environmental Design Faculty Publications
This paper examines the Centre Dürrenmatt Neuchâtel (CDN), which opened in 2000, as the site of a “dialogue” between the ideas and practice of Switzerland’s best-known Italian-speaking architect and designer, Mario Botta, and the country’s best-known German-speaking playwright, Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921-1990). The CDN becomes a double portrait of two Swiss artists, separated by parole but not Sprache. Both felt peripheral to Swiss society, yet each was a product of the cantonal principle of strong regionalism aerated by the Federation’s facilitation of cosmopolitanism aligned in an environmental ecology that literally and figuratively mixed their respective media: the concrete for the …

A Grammar Of Grey: A Study Of Crowds, Clouds And Pronouns, Emily Lenora Smart
A Grammar Of Grey: A Study Of Crowds, Clouds And Pronouns, Emily Lenora Smart
Digitized Theses
This thesis investigates the transformation of the notion of identity from the height of Romantic subjectivity to the lowest common denominator, the figure of the mass-man. Through examination of pronominal linguistic constructions to consideration of the function of grey in visual art, this project explores a concept of the average that is easily shaped into notions of the generic and the mediocre. The crowd and the cloud are related topoi with respect to the concept of the typology in social and aesthetic realms. This project highlights the consequence of third-personality as a basis of artistic expression as authorial indifference and …
Bilingualism In Gibraltar: Focus Constructions Of Bilingual Spanish-English Grammars And The Syntax-Discourse Interface, K. Elaine Mcilwraith
Bilingualism In Gibraltar: Focus Constructions Of Bilingual Spanish-English Grammars And The Syntax-Discourse Interface, K. Elaine Mcilwraith
Digitized Theses
Current investigations on bilingualism have shown a tendency for bilingual grammars to display a divergence from monolingual target grammars at the syntaxdiscourse interface. Generally, the grammars studied have been those of first or second generation bilinguals. In order to argue that this divergence is an inevitable characteristic of bilingual grammars, further exploration of various types of bilinguals is necessary. The present investigation examines the discourse operator, focus, in neutral and presentational contexts. Neutral focus is determined by syntax whereas presentational focus is determined by the activation of FocP by the syntax-discourse interface. Results show that the following hypotheses were supported …

La Adquisiciôn Incompleta Y La Atriciôn En Los Verbos Con Y Sin Preposiciones En Hispanohablantes Bilingües, Monica Nicte-Ha Codina
Digitized Theses
This study investigates incomplete acquisition in simultaneous bilinguals and first language attrition in late L2 bilinguals of English. Three groups are compared (n=10) Spanish monolingual speakers, (n=10) simultaneous bilinguals (n=10) and L2 late bilinguals. Three linguistic tests measure the command of the verbal structures ± preposition. It is hypothesized that the onset of language learning together with the input plays an important role in acquisition. In other words, it is assumed that the late bilinguals have an increased level of competence in their L1 for having been exposed to it for a longer period, while the heritage speakers are prone …
Factors That Contribute To Culture Shock: A Case Study Involving Chinese Learners Of English, Weijuan S. Chi
Factors That Contribute To Culture Shock: A Case Study Involving Chinese Learners Of English, Weijuan S. Chi
Digitized Theses
Given the reality of large numbers of Chinese students studying in colleges and universities in Canada to pursue higher education, and the alienation that they experience during their studies, it is important that educators understand the nature of culture shock, the factors that contribute to culture shock, as well as the role that culture shock plays in the process of cross-cultural adaptation. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between each of the six demographic factors (e.g. age, gender, future study plan, number of Canadian friends who are native speakers of English, previous travel experiences and length …
The Ends Of Narrative, Richard Thomas Eldridge
The Ends Of Narrative, Richard Thomas Eldridge
Philosophy Faculty Works
We can begin to approach what might be called the peculiarity of literature as a form of cognitive practice by comparing how literary works end with how other pieces of intellectual work end. A proof in mathematics ends by reaching its final line, where each line that is not an axiom is generated in explicit accord with a rule of inference that in principle anyone might follow. Reports of experimental results generated in a lab specify procedures that were followed in setting up equipment and carrying out tests. While they often also offer conjectural interpretations of results and suggestions for …

Consumer health information written by health care professionals is often inaccessible to the consumers it is written for. Traditional readability formulas examine syntactic features like sentence length and number of syllables, ignoring the target audience's grasp of the words themselves. The use of specialized vocabulary disrupts the understanding of patients with low reading skills, causing a decrease in comprehension. A naive Bayes classifier for three levels of increasing medical terminology specificity (consumer/patient, novice health learner, medical professional) was created with a lexicon generated from a representative medical corpus. Ninety-six percent accuracy in classification was attained. The classifier was then applied …

Ecosystem Management Decision Support (Emds) Applied To Watershed Assessment On California’S North Coast, Rich Walker, Chris Keithley, Russ Henly, Scott Downie, Steve Cannata
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
In 2001, the state of California initiated the North Coast Watershed Assessment Program (2003a) to assemble information on the status of coastal watersheds that have historically supported anadromous fish. The five-agency consortium explored the use of Ecosystem Management Decision Support (EMDS) (Reynolds and others 1996) as a means to help assess overall watershed and in-stream conditions for fish. EMDS is expert system software developed by the USDA Forest Service for similar efforts with the Northwest Forest Plan (2000). NCWAP developed models to help assess key watershed characteristics that contribute to shaping channel morphology and to evaluate the present stream habitat …
Perceptual Differences In The Conversational Performance Of People With Severe Expressive Aphasia Using Three Types Of Visual Screen Displays On Speech Generating Devices, Laura Figley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A multiple single-subject randomized design experimental study measured the perceptions of three persons with aphasia and their communication partners without aphasia when communicating across three conditions: Condition A--speech generating device (SGD) with No Display; Condition B--SGD with visual scene display (VSD); and Condition C--SGD with traditional grid display (TGD). Quantitative data were collected in the forms of preference choice of display type, a forced-choice ranking of experimental sessions, and 7-pt Likert rating scales. All participants rated the dependent variables of communicative success, ease, independence, and naturalness across conditions. Qualitative data were collected in the form of open-ended interviews conducted at …
The Effect Of Dbs Settings On Neuropsychological Functioning In Patients With Parkinson's Disease, Kathleen M. Mash
The Effect Of Dbs Settings On Neuropsychological Functioning In Patients With Parkinson's Disease, Kathleen M. Mash
ETD Archive
Parkinson's disease (PD) is an idiopathic progressive neurological disorder. Improvement in Parkinsonian motor function has been established with subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS). Recently, the relationship between DBS stimulator settings and motor function has begun to be explored however, no study to date has investigated the relationship between DBS settings and neuropsychological functioning. This study evaluated the extent to which DBS settings (i.e., amplitude, frequency, and pulse width) are associated with post-operative performances on the RBANS (Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status). The study was a prospective clinical trial of STN DBS for the treatment of …

Fostering Global-Mindedness In Teacher Preparation, Gail D. Zahn, Elizabeth J. Sandell, Caryn E. Lindsey
Elementary and Literacy Education Department Publications
Teacher education programs require attention to the rapid changes in the world, in part because populations are becoming increasingly diverse. These rapidly changing classroom environments have prompted a need to train teachers who can communicate with and teach students from increasingly diverse backgrounds. In addition, they must have an understanding of cultural family values and practices which influence individual students among the various ethnic populations they teach. This paper will describe steps taken by one College of Education to create international partnerships and learning experiences in an effort to enhance their teacher training programs and develop an environment of global-mindedness.

Rendering Shakespearean Rhetoric Visible In The Boydell Shakespeare Gallery, Katherine Kickel
Rendering Shakespearean Rhetoric Visible In The Boydell Shakespeare Gallery, Katherine Kickel
Quidditas
Traditionally, the Boydell Shakespeare Gallery is considered an important moment in England’s art history narrative. In this essay, I argue that the Boydell collection also reflects a new preference for reading Shakespeare’s plays in the eighteenth century via its editorial illustration of parts of the plays that would not normally be emphasized in theatrical productions.

An Experimental Investigation Of Literacy In A Secondary Education Science Classroom, Heather M. Nettnin
Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters
Scientific concepts are not the only content learned in the science classroom. Students cannot learn science with out literacy skills. The study involved the implementation of literacy strategies in a high school chemistry classroom. The strategies involved reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities. Students were asked to draw from their prior knowledge and possible misconceptions of reality when considering new content. The use of the literacy strategies in the science classroom promoted original thought amongst the students and supported group and class discussions. Students were fully engaged and they actively participated in the activities. As a result students were consistently …
Vico’S New Science Of Interpretation: Beyond Philosophical Hermeneutics And The Hermeneutics Of Suspicion, David Ingram
Vico’S New Science Of Interpretation: Beyond Philosophical Hermeneutics And The Hermeneutics Of Suspicion, David Ingram
Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The article situates Vico's hermeneutical science of history between a hermeneutics of suspicion (Ricoeur, Habermas, Freud) and a redemptive hermeneutics (Gadamer, Benjamin). It discusses Vico's early writings and his ambivalent trajectory from Cartesian rationalism to counter-enlightenment historicist and critic of natural law reasoning. The complexity of Vico's thinking belies some of the popular treatments of his thought developed by Isaiah Berlin and others.
