What Should Be In A Human Behavior Representation Federation Object Model For High Level Architecture, Gurkan Haznedaroglu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Modeling and Simulation (M&S) can assist in evaluating scenarios and enhancing the performance of operational systems. Fully integrated use of MBS can enable the evaluation of the effectiveness of proposed equipment or software in realistic simulated environments and can provide an assessment of the impacts of specific equipment or capabilities on battle outcomes. Every level, from strategic planners, technology experts, operations research analysts, weapons systems designers and users, testers, maintainers, and cost analysts, has to be interactively involved to maximize the benefits of this approach. Human behavior is a very important part of the M&S process. Especially in constructive simulations, …

A Risk- And Fuzzy Set-Based Methodology For Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration Military Utility Assessment Design, Thomas James Meyers Apr 2007

A Risk- And Fuzzy Set-Based Methodology For Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration Military Utility Assessment Design, Thomas James Meyers

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The U.S. Department of Defense Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD) and derivative, rapid acquisition programs offer timely solutions to critical military needs by assessing the utility of technologies mature enough to be fielded without application of traditional, defense system development processes. Military utility assessments (MUA) are ACTDs' most critical features, but the lack of a standard for identifying assessment criteria tailored to specific demonstrations risks poorly informed acquisition decisions and the military operations those decisions are intended to support.

The purpose of this research was to develop and deploy a methodology for identifying measures of effectiveness integral to advanced concept …

Diagnosing Reading Strategies: Paraphrase Recognition, Chutima Boonthum Apr 2007

Diagnosing Reading Strategies: Paraphrase Recognition, Chutima Boonthum

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Paraphrase recognition is a form of natural language processing used in tutoring, question answering, and information retrieval systems. The context of the present work is an automated reading strategy trainer called iSTART (Interactive Strategy Trainer for Active Reading and Thinking). The ability to recognize the use of paraphrase—a complete, partial, or inaccurate paraphrase; with or without extra information—in the student's input is essential if the trainer is to give appropriate feedback. I analyzed the most common patterns of paraphrase and developed a means of representing the semantic structure of sentences. Paraphrases are recognized by transforming sentences into this representation and …

Effects Of Standardization On Cultural Identity And Community Involvement: Transgender Clients At The Vrije Universiteit Gender Clinic, Benjamin Davis Apr 2007

Effects Of Standardization On Cultural Identity And Community Involvement: Transgender Clients At The Vrije Universiteit Gender Clinic, Benjamin Davis

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In the Netherlands, treatment for transsexual individuals has been institutionalized through the protocol established at the Vrije Universiteit Gender Clinic. However, for the population of transgender-identified individuals, those who transgress the gender binary and who identify among or in-between genders, the four phases of transition often do not suit their unique needs and expressions of gender identity. In this study, I examined the narratives of 9 trans-identified individuals who have utilized the services at the Gender Clinic. To supplement my analysis of these interviews, I spoke with S. Leigh Thompson, founder and acting director of the TransMasculine Community Network, Jos …

Environment As Social And Literary Constructs: An Exploration Of The Relationship Between The Environment And Mahafaly Oral Literature, Eugenie Cha

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

There was a time, long ago, when a small lake or reservoir had formed in a remote area whose location still remains a mystery today. One day, a king was passing through this region. He desperately needed water and searched and searched, but to no avail. Finally, he found this lake and was able to quench his thirst, and thus prevented himself from dying of dehydration (Avimary).

This story is one of many that are present within the canon of oral literature in Madagascar today. It originated from a small town called Ampanihy, which lies in the southwestern region of …

Throne Names, Pen Names, Horse Names, And Field Names: A Look At The Significance Of Name Change In The Ethiopian Political Sphere, Krista Mehari Apr 2007

Throne Names, Pen Names, Horse Names, And Field Names: A Look At The Significance Of Name Change In The Ethiopian Political Sphere, Krista Mehari

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study examines the motivations for name changes and the purposes the chosen names accomplish, specifically relating to the Ethiopian political sphere. Throne names and horse names were used solely by the emperors and the ruling class. Those name changes exalted the bearer by either stating his authority or connecting him to divine power. Pen names and field names were used by people not in power to hide their identity from people with the power to harm them. Although the purpose of those name changes was to disguise, the names that were chosen identified the bearer with another person or …

Life-Giving Speech Amid An Empire Of Silence, Walter Brueggemann Apr 2007

Life-Giving Speech Amid An Empire Of Silence, Walter Brueggemann

Michigan Law Review

It will come as no surprise to readers of the Law Review that James Boyd White is a daring and wise practitioner of what Clifford Geertz terms "blurred genres." By appeal to Kenneth Burke, Victor Turner, and Paul Ricoeur, among others, Geertz envisions a broad interpretive venture that breaks out of the rigid regulations of a particular discipline to the larger constructive enterprise that entertains life and its meaning as a "game" of face-to-face engagement, or as a "drama" that presses on to the next scene. White's work fits that vision precisely. In Living Speech: Resisting the Empire of Force, …

Cranberries: The Use Of A Naturally Occurring Compound To Fight Against Periodontopathogens, Debbie L. Darius Mar 2007

Cranberries: The Use Of A Naturally Occurring Compound To Fight Against Periodontopathogens, Debbie L. Darius

Undergraduate Student Symposium

This literature review focuses on the use of a naturally occurring compound found in cranberries (proanthocyanidins) to fight against periodontopathogens and thus the development of periodontal disease. Periodontopathogens and their invasion in gingival tissues and periodontium is the usual cause of periodontitis. Oral microorganisms coaggregate to become major bacterial complexes, allowing their proteases to digest similar components of the gingival crevicular fluid located in subgingival sites. The most common microbe associated with this disease is P. gingivalis where its proteolytic enzymes gingipains and dipeptidyl peptidases IV break down collagen and create large supplements of iron for the bacteria. However, recent …

Utilization Of Passive Acoustic Tracking To Determine Artificial Habitat Use And Movement Of Nurse Sharks, Ginglymostoma Cirratum, Michael Palozzola

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The ecological characteristics of many cryptic and evasive marine vertebrates, such as sharks, are widely unknown, largely, due to the inability to efficiently monitor and track them over extended periods of time. Recent advances in ultrasonic acoustic telemetry now allow scientists to collect data on these highly elusive predators more efficiently then ever before. Marine animals, such as the nurse shark, Ginglymostoma cirratum, have been observed at artificial reefs, such as sunken vessels, but how long they spend at or near these habitats is unknown. This research aims to determine the habitat use of the nurse shark, Ginglymostoma cirratum …

The Synthesis Of Building Blocks For Metal-Organic Frameworks (Mof): Potential For Gaseous Fuel Storage, Richard C. Wheeler Mar 2007

The Synthesis Of Building Blocks For Metal-Organic Frameworks (Mof): Potential For Gaseous Fuel Storage, Richard C. Wheeler

Undergraduate Student Symposium

There is currently considerable interest in the use of hydrogen as an energy transport medium. While hydrogen provides clean combustion, storage and transport raises complex engineering challenges, resulting in potentially expensive design restraints. Current research indicates that transition metal complexes of mononucleating ligands, such as 1,3-bis(pyridylimino)benz(f)isoindoline (NBAII), spontaneously form uniform channels in the crystalline matrix that may be suitable for hydrogen storage. Furthermore, the alteration of the ligand substituents may yield the ability to tailor the shape and size of the crystalline channel to optimize the geometric configuration. Specifically, the x-ray crystallography of the divalent copper complex of NBAII indicates …

The Effects Of Academic Stress On Immune Functioning, Maureen Green, Lara Murphy Mar 2007

The Effects Of Academic Stress On Immune Functioning, Maureen Green, Lara Murphy

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Stress associated with academic examinations is thought to cause immunosuppression in students. However, it is currently unclear whether the immunosupression associated with academic pressure is related to increases in the stress hormone, cortisol. Indeed, it is possible that factors independent of cortisol may control the emotional and immune response. In the current study, we were interested in untangling the complex relationship between academic stress and immunusupression through comparing both subjective and objective measures of academic stress and immune functioning. Students were assessed before, during, and after an academic examination period. During each assessment, self-reported subjective reports of stress were collected …

In the United States, DMSO has Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval only for use as a preservative of organs for transplant. In the research laboratories DMSO is commonly used as a vehicle to solubilize and water insoluble drugs and to increase the membrane permeability of drugs during in vitrotreatments. In cell culture laboratories DMSO is also used as a cryoprotectant to help protect the …

Post-Absurdism: Ionesco And The Juxtaposition Of Absurdism And Postmodernism, Elizabeth B. Harbaugh Mar 2007

Post-Absurdism: Ionesco And The Juxtaposition Of Absurdism And Postmodernism, Elizabeth B. Harbaugh

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The purpose of this paper is to situate Eugène Ionesco’s dramatic works within an historical, literary, and theoretical framework. By examining the influences of both absurdism and postmodernism on Eugène Ionesco’s work, we can discern specific cultural and philosophical issues concerning Europeans, artists, and the general world population following the Second World War. Eugène Ionesco’s works are ultimately extremely historically and theatrically significant and worthy of study, despite a contemporary distance from absurdism as a worthy field of study.

Molecular Chaperones And Parasites, Andrew Deonarine Mar 2007

Molecular Chaperones And Parasites, Andrew Deonarine

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Molecular chaperones and chaperonins are proteins found in all living organisms from the prokaryotic bacteria all the way to the eukaryotic human. These proteins serve to play several important roles within the cell. The tasks vary from assisting directly or indirectly in the folding of nascent proteins produced by the ribosome, repairing heat damaged proteins, involvement in cell signaling, and cell differentiation. Many of these proteins are inducible in response to heat. Therefore they became known as heat shock proteins (Hsp). Proteins are absolutely vital in any cell. They serve specific structural and functional roles to enable cellular life. Currently, …

Dissonant Composition: Gender Inequalities In Music, Greg Kyriakakis Mar 2007

Dissonant Composition: Gender Inequalities In Music, Greg Kyriakakis

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Gender constructions are inescapable in society; it is therefore understandable that inequities have permeated the realm of classical and popular music. From the types of instruments young children decide to study to the composition of modern rock bands, gender roles and expectations have helped shape the state of music. Women who further their study in music predominantly learn from the works of male artists, influencing the female musicians’ style while crippling personal creativity. Even the body of the performer plays a role in the type of instrument studied; female vocalists rely on their body to produce sound while male musicians …

Comparing Nuclear Fission And Nuclear Fusion As An Alternative Source Of Energy, Natasha Antonovich, Michael Ratliff, Neeketa Sheth Mar 2007

Comparing Nuclear Fission And Nuclear Fusion As An Alternative Source Of Energy, Natasha Antonovich, Michael Ratliff, Neeketa Sheth

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The purpose of this research project was to explore alternate nuclear energy sources. The nuclear energy sources that were examined were fission and fusion. From the research that was done, pros and cons were found for each type of nuclear energy. Fission, being an established technology for energy, posed an economical advantage; however, the waste that is given off from these reactions is a great environmental detriment. Fusion reactors are newer nuclear energy sources, thus they are more costly, but their lack of radioactive waste gives fusion an environmental advantage. Given that both reactions have positive and negative sides to …

Attraction On The Basis Of Relationship Status, Laxmi Lalwani, Luciana Ortiz Mar 2007

Attraction On The Basis Of Relationship Status, Laxmi Lalwani, Luciana Ortiz

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Research has shown that the criteria women use to evaluate men’s attractiveness shift across the menstrual cycle (Gangestad & Thornhill, 1998). For example, when women are in the fertile phase of their cycle, they report greater attraction to men who display high intrasexual competitiveness (Gangestad, Simpson, Cousins, Garver-Apgar, & Christensen, 2004). We propose to examine female college students’ attraction to men based on the phase of their cycle and the men’s relationship status. In a between- participants design, female college students will either be told that a male confederate is single or in a relationship. We will then ask the …

Using Various Visual Census Techniques To Assess Fish Assemblages On Nearshore Habitats Off Lantana Beach, Florida, Tandace Burkhart, Kaela Perez, Michael Palozzola, Jillian Maffucci

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The nearshore environment off southern Palm Beach County is characterized by extensive areas of hardbottom, primarily composed of limestone beachrock and Sabellarid worm reefs. These substrates are located very close to shore in the surf zone, an area of high wave action, and provide habitat to a wide variety of fish species. These habitats are ephemeral and cycle through burial and exposure events over time due to shifting sand from nearby beach renourishment projects. One goal of this study is to determine the species composition and abundance of this fish assemblage using various visual census techniques. We will be trained …
