Multiple Roles Of Academic Librarians, Justine Alsop, Karen Bordonaro
E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)
Abstract
This exploratory research study seeks to investigate the phenomenon of academic librarians working in other paid roles on university campuses in addition to working as librarians. Its purpose is to explore how prevalent this phenomenon might be, to discover what other types of paid positions librarians are engaged in, and to ascertain what the perceived advantages and disadvantages could be of working in dual roles on campus. An online survey was administered and results point out that some academic librarians are engaged in working in multiple roles on campus. Furthermore, a majority of those surveyed saw a number of …

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
These are issues that have become prominent in our discussions of educational administration. In travel throughout the United States, the changing face of schools reflects the importance of these issues to education leaders. In two recent trips to educational leadership conferences held in Las Vegas, Nevada, I was struck by the variety of language groups represented by the service workers of the city. My trips in early 2007 were 30 days apart. In that brief time span, it sounded as though the number of languages and accents I heard on the second trip had doubled since the first trip. Disney …

Juvenile Delinquents' Views Of Teachers' Language, Classroom Instruction And Listening Behaviors, Dixie Sanger, Dannie Deschene, Karen Stokely, Don Belau
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
The purposes of this study were to survey the views of female adolescents about: (a) their classroom teachers' language used during instruction, (b) their attitudes toward the language of classroom instruction, and (c) views about listening behaviors. A survey design was used with 31 participants ranging in age from 15 to 18 with a mean age of 17.12 years. Three questionnaires addressing classroom instruction and listening behaviors were read to each student. Two open-ended questions on learning in school were included in the study. Descriptive findings revealed the language load of the curriculum was too difficult and not sufficiently understood …

Developing Students' Representational Fluency Using Virtual And Physical Algebra Balances, Jennifer Suth, Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham
Developing Students' Representational Fluency Using Virtual And Physical Algebra Balances, Jennifer Suth, Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham
Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications
Both virtual and physical manipulatives are reported as effective learning tools when used with different groups of students in a variety of contexts to learn mathematical content. The use of multiple representations and the flexibility to translate among those representational forms facilitates students' learning and has the potential to deepen their understanding. This classroom project involved two groups of third-grade students in a week-long unit focusing on algebraic relationships. The purpose of the unit was to engage students with different algebraic models and encourage students to use informal strategies to represent their relational thinking. The paper highlights examples of these …

The Evolution And Ownership Of The Concept Of The African-American Woman As “The Mule Of The World”, Stephanie Abigail Taylor
The Evolution And Ownership Of The Concept Of The African-American Woman As “The Mule Of The World”, Stephanie Abigail Taylor
Senior Honors Theses
This thesis explores the motif of the African-American woman as the “mule of the world.” The negative connotations of the term originate in slavery and have been influenced by the “cult of true womanhood.” The term itself interrelates to the triple marginalization—that of race, sex, and class—that African American women face. However, black female authors have taken this derogatory meaning and have subsequently given it a positive meaning through the act of Signification, as theorized by Henry Louis Gates. Like their black male predecessors, Maya Angelou (in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings) and Zora Neale Hurston (in Their …

Wit And Sentiment: The Spirit Of Shandeism In A Speechless Worid, Amber Marie Lockard
Senior Honors Theses
Between the years 1759 and 1769, Laurence Sterne published a hugely popular and widely controversial work, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. One aspect of this "shaggy dog" story is to address the ambiguity and imprecision of language as a system of communication. Communication (or lack of) occurs throughout the piece both between the characters and between the narrating voice of Tristram and the "constructed" reader. Tristram Shandy reveals this language difficulty through several means: First is the hobby-horse, the individuals' fixations and obsessions; second and connected to this idea of the hobby-horse is the John Locke's philosophy …

From Consciousness To Callousness: The Misdirected Path Of Rap, Pamela Collins
From Consciousness To Callousness: The Misdirected Path Of Rap, Pamela Collins
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
This paper describes the misdirected path and tainting of rap music from its positive origins to the commercially violent genre it is thought of today. Variables in this devolution of rap include the influence of record and distribution companies, deindustrialization, white flight, migration of gangs, and the introduction of prison culture. This paper introduces a new variable which is the relationship between the emergence of crack cocaine and the devolution of rap music. Other work has begun to appear that mentions one or several variables but not all of them. Arguing that none of these factors can be fully understood …

BYU Studies
Gideon O. Burton introduces the special issue dedicated to Mormon cinema by giving a brief overview of the other articles appearing in the issue and clarifying what Mormon cinema is: any film made by or about Mormons, from Church-produced movies used for teaching and training to YouTube segments; from student-made films to theatrically released movies. Employment Law—Title Vii And The Anti-Retaliation Provision—Beyond Employment And The Workplace: The United States Supreme Court Resolves The Split And Shifts The Balance. Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Co. V. White, 126 S. Ct. 2405 (2006)., Kaylin Redman Hart
University of Arkansas at Little Rock Law Review
In its recent decision in Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Co. v. White, the Supreme Court resolved the split along the federal circuit courts by extending Title VII's anti-retaliation provision to retaliatory acts and harms that are unrelated to employment or that occur outside of the workplace. The Court limited its holding by concluding that Title VII prohibits only those employer actions that would "dissuade a reasonable worker from making or supporting a charge of discrimination." This note examines the significance of the Supreme Court's decision in Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Co. v. White to employers and employees in …

Semantics Or Substance? David Scheffer’S Welcome Proposal To Strengthen Criminal Accountability For Atrocities, William A. Schabas
Semantics Or Substance? David Scheffer’S Welcome Proposal To Strengthen Criminal Accountability For Atrocities, William A. Schabas
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
David Scheffer’s fascinating proposal, if I understand it properly, calls for an amalgamation of various categories of internationally condemned behavior—mainly genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes—into a new concept known as ‘‘atrocity law.’’ This will facilitate implementation of the responsibility to protect vulnerable populations. Pedantic debates about matters of essentially technical relevance to criminal prosecution will not be allowed to impede sincere efforts at intervention or to provide a pretext for those who shirk their obligations. Leslie Green mooted a similar idea in the mid-1990s, but it didn’t gain any traction at the time.1 In informal discussions as part …
