Missionary Schools And The Enlightenment Of The Alaskan Natives: A Theological And Sociological Survey Of Russian Orthodox And Protestant Missionary Efforts Among The Nations Of The Aleutian Islands And Southeastern Alaska, Erik C. Young

Seminary Masters Theses

The goal of this research thesis is to explore the activities of the Protestant and Russian Orthodox missions to Alaska and the ways in which they engaged the Native American peoples. It examines the geographic, religious, sociaL and economic distinctives of the respective missionary ideologies. Although the Orthodox and Protestant missions labored at different time periods and under different conditions, their work overlapped and their efforts were informed by the anthropological and theological traditions from which they derived. As a vehicle for equitable comparison, this thesis briefly unpacks the lives of the Presbyterian minister Edward Marsden, a Tsirnshian Indian educated …

A Quandary In Law? A (Qualified) Catholic Denial, Patrick Mckinley Brennan Apr 2007

A Quandary In Law? A (Qualified) Catholic Denial, Patrick Mckinley Brennan

Working Paper Series

A contribution to the second law review symposium dedicated to Steven Smith’s Law’s Quandary (Harvard 2004), this paper asks whether the “quandary” in which Smith finds modern law and jurisprudence is not, at least in part, the consequence of misunderstanding the classical natural law jurisprudence. The paper advances an interpretation of natural law according to which the natural law is the human person’s “participation” in the eternal law itself, with literally cosmic consequences for how we understand the ends and measures of human lawmaking. Mounting an argument against Justice Scalia’s thesis that “God applies the natural law,” the paper goes …

Spiritual Formation: An Emerging Narrative In Clinical Supervision Of Counseling And Family Therapy, Evangeline Willms Thiessen Apr 2007

Spiritual Formation: An Emerging Narrative In Clinical Supervision Of Counseling And Family Therapy, Evangeline Willms Thiessen

Doctor of Ministry

Clinical professionals in the disciplines of counseling and family therapy, despite the many decades of separation between spirituality and science, currently face the challenge to attend to the spiritual realities and resources of clients' stories. As spirituality, an aspect of therapeutic diversity, moves increasingly to the forefront of counseling and family therapy literature, many clinicians still find it uncomfortable or difficult to negotiate the experiential path of addressing spirituality in practice. Although the need to address spirituality and religion is recognized, there continues to be a lack of conceptualization and methodology to guide the training experiences and preparation of clinicians. …

Cubans: Anomaly Or Pioneers? An Analysis Of Their Assimilation And Political Incorporation Into The American Political Mainstream And The Measurement Of Their Political Influence In The United States, Lara Bueso Apr 2007

Cubans: Anomaly Or Pioneers? An Analysis Of Their Assimilation And Political Incorporation Into The American Political Mainstream And The Measurement Of Their Political Influence In The United States, Lara Bueso

Rollins Undergraduate Research Journal

My thesis studies how Cuban American immigrants achieved political influence in the United States and whether other Hispanic immigrant groups can attain similar successes. The study found a correlation between assimilation and political incorporation. I evaluated Cuban American assimilation via three proxy variables: education, language spoken in the home, and intermarriage. I concluded that Cuban Americans are an anomaly among Hispanic immigrants. The underlying reason is the way in which they were treated by the United States government, and how much government support they received. This observation was followed by a comparison with Mexican Americans who were not granted government …

Why Concert Music Is Wonderful: Three Ways To Approach Western Art Music, Conrad Winslow Apr 2007

Why Concert Music Is Wonderful: Three Ways To Approach Western Art Music, Conrad Winslow

Rollins Undergraduate Research Journal

There are three modes of listening to music which correspond to increasing mental involvement. These listening methods are tools for appreciating concert music and enjoying the deep structure that great art music contains. Organized by level of accessibility and amount of investment on the part of the listener, they provide listeners a rudimentary Rosetta stone for enjoying and even understanding concert music.

Writing And Imitation: Greek Education In The Greco-Roman World, Rubén R. Dupertuis Apr 2007

Writing And Imitation: Greek Education In The Greco-Roman World, Rubén R. Dupertuis

Religion Faculty Research

The imitation of a handful of accepted literary models lies at the core of the Greco-Roman educational process throughout all of its stages. While at the more advanced levels the relationship to models became more nuanced, the underlying principle remained the imitation of those authors who had achieved greatness. Quintilian explains the rationale as follows:

For there can be no doubt that in art no small portion of our task lies in imitation, since although invention came first and is all-important, it is expedient to imitate whatever has been invented with success. And it is a universal rule of life …

Creative Commons As Conversational Copyright, Michael W. Carroll Apr 2007

Creative Commons As Conversational Copyright, Michael W. Carroll

Working Paper Series

Copyright law's default settings inhibit sharing and adaptation of creative works even though new digital technologies greatly enhance individuals' capacity to engage in creative conversation. Creative Commons licenses enable a form of conversational copyright through which creators share their works, primarily over the Internet, while asserting some limitation on user's right with respect to works in the licensed commons. More specifically, this chapter explains the problems in copyright law to which Creative Commons licenses respond, the methods chosen, and why the machine-readable and public aspects of the licenses are specific examples of a more general phenomenon in digital copyright law …

What Are We Fighting For? An Analysis Of The Sociopolitical Non-Fiction Of Herbert George Wells, Jason Edward Sloan Apr 2007

What Are We Fighting For? An Analysis Of The Sociopolitical Non-Fiction Of Herbert George Wells, Jason Edward Sloan

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The legacy of H. G. Wells’ should not be limited to that of a British fiction writer. Wells advocated universal human rights and supported the engagement of broad public policy debate, and he often commented on the British government. His country had lived through World War I, the supposed “war to end all wars.” The roaring 1920’s arrived next, offering hope after World War I’s devastation. World War II was then thrust upon Britain. Wells was incensed that a thirty-year period had elapsed and, despite numerous promises by the British government, no social reform had emerged. For more than a …

Classroom Acoustics And Intervention Strategies To Enhance The Learning Environment, Christal Savage Apr 2007

Classroom Acoustics And Intervention Strategies To Enhance The Learning Environment, Christal Savage

Doctoral Dissertations

The classroom environment can be an acoustically difficult atmosphere for students to learn effectively, sometimes due in part to poor acoustical properties. Noise and reverberation have a substantial influence on room acoustics and subsequently intelligibility of speech. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA, 1995) developed minimal standards for noise and reverberation in a classroom for the purpose of providing an adequate listening environment. A lack of adherence to these standards may have undesirable consequences, which may lead to poor academic performance.

The purpose of this capstone project is to develop a protocol to measure the acoustical properties of reverberation time and …

Word Oper Findan : Seamus Heaney And The Translation Of Beowulf, Jack Harding Bell Apr 2007

Word Oper Findan : Seamus Heaney And The Translation Of Beowulf, Jack Harding Bell

Honors Theses

In 2000, Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney published a new translation of the early medieval epic, Beowulf The work was subsequently lauded as a masterpiece. Despite this ensuing surge of interest in Heaney's translation, very few scholars have undertaken the task of a critical analysis of the translation and none have assumed the task of a comparative analysis between the original text and Heaney's version. Most, it seems, have assumed that Heaney's translation is a faithful rendition of the original, and with good reason. Heaney maintains fidelity to the structure, stylistics, and meter of the original, as well as to its …
