Cultural Differences In Perceptions Of And Responses To Sexual Harassment, Jennifer Zimbroff May 2007

Cultural Differences In Perceptions Of And Responses To Sexual Harassment, Jennifer Zimbroff

Duke Journal of Gender Law & Policy

14 To be considered pervasive, the conduct must be repeated, continuous and concerted, and not merely an isolated incident or occasional occurrence.15 Moreover, to sustain a hostile environment claim, the conduct must have been unwelcome-that is, the conduct was neither invited nor incited by the complaining party-and the complainant must have clearly indicated that the conduct was unwelcome.16 Hostile environment sexual harassment encompasses a wide range of behaviors including, inter alia, displays of sexually-explicit materials, sexuallycharged or demeaning jokes, derogatory names or epithets, physical advances, repetitive requests for dates, repeated comments on physical appearance, and sexually-charged body language or facial …

Learning To Classify E-Mail, Irena Koprinska, Josiah Poon, James Clark, Jason Yuk Hin Chan May 2007

Learning To Classify E-Mail, Irena Koprinska, Josiah Poon, James Clark, Jason Yuk Hin Chan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper we study supervised and semi-supervised classification of e-mails. We consider two tasks: filing e-mails into folders and spam e-mail filtering. Firstly, in a supervised learning setting, we investigate the use of random forest for automatic e-mail filing into folders and spam e-mail filtering. We show that random forest is a good choice for these tasks as it runs fast on large and high dimensional databases, is easy to tune and is highly accurate, outperforming popular algorithms such as decision trees, support vector machines and naive Bayes. We introduce a new accurate feature selector with linear time complexity. …

The Novice Consultant And Electronic Mail: Strategies For And Implementation Of Politeness Techniques In Different Organizational Contexts, Nancy Annett May 2007

The Novice Consultant And Electronic Mail: Strategies For And Implementation Of Politeness Techniques In Different Organizational Contexts, Nancy Annett

All Theses

This study examines the ways in which experienced and novice consultants in different organizational settings think about and use e-mail for communication to superiors. The methods by which novices in the workplace communicate via e-mail, especially to superiors, present a gap in the literature. Comparing novice and experienced employee e-mail behavior across organizational boundaries yielded several findings. First, employees seem to use particular decision criteria when formulating e-mail messages to managers, including considerations of the message's recipient and purpose. Novices seem most attuned to hierarchical levels and to the revision opportunities available through e-mail. Second, organizational context appears to affect …

Orthodoxy And The New Russia, Jonathan Clarke, Duncan Reid Thd, Med May 2007

Orthodoxy And The New Russia, Jonathan Clarke, Duncan Reid Thd, Med

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

This paper examines the contemporary phenomenon of the reemergence of the Orthodox Church not only as the leading religious institution of post-Soviet Russia, but also as a core marker of identity. The disappearance of the Soviet Union has produced a profound crisis of idemity in Russia. Traditional markers of identity, particularly the Orthodox Church, have assumed an importance hardly anticipated before the collapse of the USSR.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The paper presents a humanoid robot that responds to human gestures seen by a camera. The behavior of the robot can be completely deterministic as specified by a Finite State Machine that maps the sensor signals to the effector signals. This model is further extended to the constraints-satisfaction based model that links robots vision, motion, emotional behavior and planning. One way of implementing this model is to use adiabatic quantum computer which quadratically speeds-up every constraint problem and will be thus necessary to solve large problems of this type. We propose to use the remotely-connected Orion system by DWAVE Corporation.

Art Curriculum: Self-Expression By Connecting To Real World Events, Sarah Mccormick May 2007

Art Curriculum: Self-Expression By Connecting To Real World Events, Sarah Mccormick

Theses

Self-expression in art to connect with real world events is an art curriculum intended for any art teacher across America. The rational for the art curriculum project is to encourage students to learn how to express themselves visually. Actively experiencing history in art as well as the logic of certain artists' reasoning will promote understanding of the real world. Although it would be very easy to have the students follow directions, step-by-step, where the entire class will get the same or similar outcomes. These "cookie-cutter" pieces inhibit students' development as a human being. We, as teachers, need to notice the …

From Exile To Eden Confronting Myth And Water Crises In A Desert Landscape, Erica Cottam May 2007

From Exile To Eden Confronting Myth And Water Crises In A Desert Landscape, Erica Cottam

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Citizens of Washington County are about to face serious water shortages that time-honored myths imposed on the landscape during the pioneer era will make difficult to confront. Biblical views of the desert as undesirable wilderness drove early Mormon settlers to create an Edenic oasis. Twenty-first century residents believe the desert has been conquered and no longer poses a threat, a myth that allows for aesthetic appreciation of the landscape but also supports extravagant use of water for recreation and development. To admit that the desert is still a formidable opponent is to deny the achievement of previous generations and question …

The Task Of Being Content: Expatriate Wives In Beijing, Emotional Work And Patriarchal Bargain, Daniella Arieli May 2007

The Task Of Being Content: Expatriate Wives In Beijing, Emotional Work And Patriarchal Bargain, Daniella Arieli

Journal of International Women's Studies

Based upon an ethnographic study of western expatriate (expat) wives in Beijing, this paper describes these women’s ‘patriarchal bargain’ and the emotional labor it involves. Relocation entails pressures to support the husbands’ careers in various ways, interruption of their working and social life, and increased economic and social dependency. At the same time, however, it also allows them to enjoy leisure and prestige, and to conduct a privileged life style. This bargain demands an emotional labor on the women’s part: an ongoing effort to feel good with their life in Beijing. The study focuses on the strategies the women use …

Strategies And Techniques Used By Exemplary Georgia Middle School Principals To Influence The Achievement Of Students With Disabilities And Meet Adequate Yearly Progress Goals, Linda Dianne Clark

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated and defined effective strategies and techniques that four exemplary principals from Pacesetter middle schools used to promote the achievement of students with disabilities and to meet AYP goals. A qualitative triangulated case study was employed, utilizing data from one-on-one interviews of principals and teachers, school and classroom observations, and review of school documents. The four exemplary principals were found to embody the principles of charismatic distributed leadership, to be pro-active in determining the most effective strategies and techniques to promote achievement, and to rely heavily on research to inform their decisions regarding the implementation of school policies …

Understanding The Multicultural Experience Of Lep Adolescents, Sharlene Snead Monahan May 2007

Understanding The Multicultural Experience Of Lep Adolescents, Sharlene Snead Monahan

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This inquiry is a qualitative study of the multicultural experience of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students who are learning a second language in an inner-city high school in southeastern Georgia. The LEP students are enrolled or have been enrolled in the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program. Using three strands of inquiry, critical phenomenological, narrative, and anthropological, I addressed three major issues. One, I examined the struggle of LEP students to learn English at a proficiency level to pass the state-mandated test for graduation and receive a high-school diploma. Not only must the LEP students learn a new …

New Voices In The Old South: Latino Immigrant Students' Experiences At One Georgia Middle School, Lucy Joanna Bush May 2007

New Voices In The Old South: Latino Immigrant Students' Experiences At One Georgia Middle School, Lucy Joanna Bush

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This research study investigated the experiences of Latino immigrant students as they negotiated and developed their academic identities at one Georgia middle school in Athens, Georgia, U.S.A. Seventy-five students took part in the survey portion of the research study, while six students participated in in-depth interviews that formed the ethnographic case studies of this research. I utilized an ethnographic case study approach (Stake, 1995; 1998) in order to explore how these students' academic experiences influenced the negotiation and development of their academic identities into three distinct forms: cholo or low-performing, medio or average-performing, and cabezon or highperforming. Each of the …

Management Of An Intelligent Argumentation Network For A Web-Based Collaborative Engineering Design Environment, Xiaoqing Frank Liu, Man Zheng, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ming-Chuan Leu May 2007

Management Of An Intelligent Argumentation Network For A Web-Based Collaborative Engineering Design Environment, Xiaoqing Frank Liu, Man Zheng, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ming-Chuan Leu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Conflict resolution is one of the most challenging tasks in collaborative engineering design. In our previous research, a web-based intelligent collaborative system was developed to address this challenge based on intelligent computational argumentation. However, two important issues were not resolved in that system: priority of participants and self-conflicting arguments. In this paper, we develop two methods for incorporating priorities of participants into the computational argumentation network: 1) weighted summation and 2) re-assessment of strengths of arguments based on priority of owners of the argument using fuzzy logic inference. In addition, we develop a method for detection of self-conflicting arguments. Incorporation …

Judicial Deference And The Credibility Of Agency Commitments, Jonathan Masur May 2007

Judicial Deference And The Credibility Of Agency Commitments, Jonathan Masur

Vanderbilt Law Review

Consider the following situation: In late 2004, towards the end of President George W. Bush's first term, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration ("NHTSA"), pursuant to its congressionally delegated authority, promulgates a rule that would relax inspection and testing regimes for automobile manufacturers- thereby saving those firms substantial amounts of money-if the manufacturers independently deployed cutting-edge vehicle safety technology. The research and development of this technology will require significant up-front expenditures, and automobile manufacturers must decide whether to invest the funds necessary to bring the technology to market. However, the cost-benefit analysis is not so straightforward. The predicament, as the …

The Unitary Executive, Jurisdiction Stripping, And The Hamdan Opinions: A Textualist Response To Justice Scalia, Steven G. Calabresi, Gary S. Lawson May 2007

The Unitary Executive, Jurisdiction Stripping, And The Hamdan Opinions: A Textualist Response To Justice Scalia, Steven G. Calabresi, Gary S. Lawson

Faculty Scholarship

In Hamdan v. Rumsfeld, a five to three majority of the United States Supreme Court held unlawful the Bush Administration's use of military commissions to try alien combatant detainees held at the United States airbase in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba-at least until and unless Congress enacted more specific authorization for the composition and procedures of the commissions. 1 There are many features of the Court's opinion that we find questionable: its analysis of the wartime scope of the "executive Power"2 vested in the President by Article II of the Constitution,3 its construction of the statutes that supposedly limit the President's power …

Using Blended Instruction To Teach Academic Vocabulary Collocations: A Case Study, M. Teresa Das Neves Seesink May 2007

Using Blended Instruction To Teach Academic Vocabulary Collocations: A Case Study, M. Teresa Das Neves Seesink

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Learning second language vocabulary has always been a challenge for second language (L2) learners. Transferring new vocabulary to an active stage has been an even greater challenge.;In the 1990s, Lewis (2002a) proposed the Lexical Approach as a means to help L2 learners with vocabulary acquisition. This approach encouraged the teaching of vocabulary in chunks, or in other words, putting emphasis on collocations. Focus on vocabulary collocations was suggested by several researchers (Brown, 1974; Hinkel, 2004; Lewis, 2001). They supported the teaching of collocations via in-class exercises. Cobb (1999) and Kaur and Hegelheimer (2005) showed that the use of a concordancer---an …

Exploring Faculty Changes In Science Courses At Maryland Community Colleges In Response To The Associate Of Arts In Teaching Degree Option For Elementary Education Majors, Bettie Cecelia A'Hearn

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Education majors at Maryland community colleges have often faced difficulties in transferring to four-year colleges, frequently having to repeat courses, resulting in greater financial burdens and delayed graduation. In the fall of 1999, the Chief Academic Officers Intersegmental Group appointed the Teacher Education Articulation Committee whose task was to establish a seamless transfer between two- and four-year public and private colleges in Maryland. This committee determined outcomes for elementary teacher candidates that defined the requirements of a new degree, the Associates of Arts in Teaching. Although the original intention of this degree was to establish a seamless transfer between two- …

Do On-Line Courses Support Certification Needs For West Virginia K--12 Teachers Of Spanish?, Kathleen Gallivan May 2007

Do On-Line Courses Support Certification Needs For West Virginia K--12 Teachers Of Spanish?, Kathleen Gallivan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recent reports show a projected teacher shortage of certified foreign language teachers in West Virginia over the next five to ten years. To facilitate initial certification and re-certification, alternative means of earning and maintaining certification could be needed. The study investigated if, in a rural state like West Virginia, teachers perceive on-line courses to be a viable resource for professional development such as earning certification. The study found that teachers do not view on-line courses as a resource for professional development. This was because teachers perceive their professional development needs as language proficiency development and language teaching methodology. These were …

Faculty Perceptions Of The Role Of Foreign Language Education At West Virginia University, William L. White May 2007

Faculty Perceptions Of The Role Of Foreign Language Education At West Virginia University, William L. White

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Foreign language education has a long history within higher education. However, since the late 1960s, foreign language enrollment, measured by percentages of students taking language courses, has declined by almost 50% in American colleges and universities. The author contends that much of this decline can be explained by three concomitant forces; including (1) the rise of professional programs that are constrained by an exactness of education that precludes study beyond rather narrowly defined plans of study; (2) the lack of language learning success that foreign language students demonstrate upon completion of language programs; and (3) the failure of language departments …

Seismic Waveform Based Criteria For Phase Transition Of Co2 In Sample Rocks, Andi Jakupi May 2007

Seismic Waveform Based Criteria For Phase Transition Of Co2 In Sample Rocks, Andi Jakupi

Theses and Dissertations

Storing carbon dioxide (CO2) in depleted oil and gas reservoirs, un-mineable coal beds or deep saline aquifer reservoirs is being considered as the most effective CO2 sequestration option. A crucial element in CO2 storage is a dependable monitoring method and assessment criteria of the mechanical integrity of the C02-rock system. One method to assess this integrity is designing a system to measure elastic properties via nondestructive seismic waves on various sample rocks under numerous conditions. Due to the nature of rock formation, their material content is neither isotropic nor homogeneous. Their elastic properties can be characterized indirectly by measuring the …
