Weighted Additive Criterion For Linear Dimension Reduction, Jing Peng, Stefan Robila Dec 2007

Weighted Additive Criterion For Linear Dimension Reduction, Jing Peng, Stefan Robila

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) for dimension reduction has been applied to a wide variety of face recognition tasks. However, it has two major problems. First, it suffers from the small sample size problem when dimensionality is greater than the sample size. Second, it creates subspaces that favor well separated classes over those that are not. In this paper, we propose a simple weighted criterion for linear dimension reduction that addresses the above two problems associated with LDA. In addition, there are well established numerical procedures such as semi-definite programming for efficiently computing the proposed criterion. We demonstrate the efficacy of …

Gateshead Revisited: Perceptual Simulators And Fields Of Meaning In The Analysis Of Metaphors, L. David Ritchie Dec 2007

Gateshead Revisited: Perceptual Simulators And Fields Of Meaning In The Analysis Of Metaphors, L. David Ritchie

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

In an extension and partial reformulation of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980), Ritchie (2003, 2004, 2006) proposed that the linguistic expressions cited as evidence of complex conceptual metaphors can be parsimoniously interpreted in terms of perceptual simulators (Barsalou, 1999), often within extended fields of meaning, which may be but are not necessarily anchored in underlying conceptual metaphors. Cameron (2003, 2007) added substance and precision to the focal concept of communicative context, and showed how metaphors can be analyzed both as part of an overall pattern of figurative language in a communicative event. In this essay a series of …

Family Law Federalism: Divorce And The Constitution, Ann Laquer Estin Dec 2007

Family Law Federalism: Divorce And The Constitution, Ann Laquer Estin

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

American divorce law was transformed by the Supreme Court in a series of decisions beginning with Williams v. North Carolina in 1942. These constitutional full faith and credit cases resolved a long-standing federalism problem by redefining the scope of state power over marital status. With these decisions, the Court shifted from an analysis based on the competing interests of different states to an approach that highlighted the individual interests of the parties involved. This change fundamentally altered state power over the family by extending to individuals greater control of their marital status. In the process, the Court cleared a path …

Interpreting The Fourteenth Amendment: Two Don'ts And Three Dos, Garrett Epps Dec 2007

Interpreting The Fourteenth Amendment: Two Don'ts And Three Dos, Garrett Epps

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

A sophisticated reading of the legislative record of the framing of the Fourteenth Amendment can provide courts and scholars with some general interpretive principles to guide their application of the Amendment to current legal problems. The author argues that two common legal conceptions about the Amendment are, in fact, misconceptions. The first is that the Amendment was chiefly concerned with the immediate situation of freed slaves in the former slave states. Instead, he argues, the legislative record suggests that the framers were broadly concerned with the rights not only of freed slaves but also of foreign-born immigrants in the North …

Teaching Time Savers: The Exam Practically Wrote Itself!, Michael E. Orrison Jr. Dec 2007

Teaching Time Savers: The Exam Practically Wrote Itself!, Michael E. Orrison Jr.

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

When I first started teaching, creating an exam for my upper division courses was a genuinely exciting process. The material felt fresh and relatively unexplored (at least by me), and I remember often feeling pleasantly overwhelmed with what seemed like a vast supply of intriguing and engrossing exam-ready problems. Crafting the perfect exam, one that was noticeably inviting, exceedingly fair, and unavoidably illuminating, was a real joy.

Exercise Makes You Feel Good, But Does Feeling Good Make You Exercise?: An Examination Of Obese Dieters, Robert A. Carels, Carissa Coit, Kathleen Young, Bonnie Berger Dec 2007

Exercise Makes You Feel Good, But Does Feeling Good Make You Exercise?: An Examination Of Obese Dieters, Robert A. Carels, Carissa Coit, Kathleen Young, Bonnie Berger

Psychology Faculty Publications

Whereas exercise-induced mood enhancement has been well documented, the relationship between mood and exercise participation is less well understood. Mood states influence evaluative judgments that could plausibly influence a decision to exercise. Further, most exercise-mood research is limited to normal weight adults in response to a single exercise session. The current investigation examines the influence of (a) morning mood on exercise, (b) exercise intensity/duration on mood enhancement, and (c) daily change in mood on exercise days compared with nonexercise days in obese behavioral weight loss program (BWLP) participants. Participants (N=36) recorded morning, evening, and pre- and postexercise mood, as well …

Measuring The Impacts Of Employer-Based Transportation Demand Management Programs On An Interstate Corridor, Nevine Labib Georggi, Phil Winters, Sachin Rai, Liren Zhou Dec 2007

Measuring The Impacts Of Employer-Based Transportation Demand Management Programs On An Interstate Corridor, Nevine Labib Georggi, Phil Winters, Sachin Rai, Liren Zhou

Journal of Public Transportation

This article is based on a study that analyzed the impacts of employer-based transportation demand management (TDM) strategies and the performance of a transportation system. The study simulated the effects of the Washington State Commute Trip Reduction (CTR) programs implemented by 189 employers on an 8.6-mile segment of I-5 in the Seattle downtown area. This comprehensive dataset included before/after employer trip reduction plans and the origins/destinations of nearly 63,000 commuters working for those 189 employers. The current performance of the selected network was compared to that of a scenario with reduced vehicle trips due to CTR programs added back onto …

User Perceptions Of Private Paratransit Operation In Indonesia, Tri Basuki Joewono, Hisashi Kubota Dec 2007

User Perceptions Of Private Paratransit Operation In Indonesia, Tri Basuki Joewono, Hisashi Kubota

Journal of Public Transportation

In this article, public perception is expressed by user participation in rating the mode’s condition and loyalty to it. The aim of this research is to explore user perceptions of paratransit (i.e., jitney) operation, a privately owned and operated mode of transport, regarding quality of service, frequency of negative experience, and loyalty. This article examines the condition of paratransit from the user’s point of view to balance the judgment from other stakeholders. The findings from path analysis reveal the important determinants that influence overall satisfaction. Moreover, path analysis supports the hypothesis that this mode will still be relevant in the …

Casual Carpooling-Enhanced, Kalon L. Kelly Dec 2007

Casual Carpooling-Enhanced, Kalon L. Kelly

Journal of Public Transportation

Casual carpooling currently functions in environments where, because there is an HOV lane, riders and passengers join together to gain access to that lane. In this article, technology is introduced that will allow casual carpooling to function in areas without HOV lanes by providing an administrative system that records actual carpooling behavior so that incentives other than access to an HOV lane can be made available. This technology also addresses some of the current shortcomings associated with casual carpooling such as personal safety, the “free rider” problem, and the disincentive to maximize the number of passengers sharing a ride. The …

Guaranteed Ride Home Programs: A Study Of Program Characteristics, Utilization, And Cost, William B. Menczer Dec 2007

Guaranteed Ride Home Programs: A Study Of Program Characteristics, Utilization, And Cost, William B. Menczer

Journal of Public Transportation

Guaranteed ride home programs play an important role in increasing public transportation ridership by providing a good reason to separate commuters from their single occupancy vehicles. Since they are inexpensive insurance policies, these programs provide a cost-effective way for a commuter to leave work in the event of a personal or family emergency or unexpected overtime. Research results show that usage rates and costs are quite low. As a possible incentive for commuters to leave their cars at home, these findings may make these programs attractive to communities that want to reduce congestion by increasing public transportation use. The research …

Examining Incentives And Preferential Treatment Of Carpools On Managed Lane Facilities, David Ungemah, Ginger Goodin, Casey Dusza, Mark Burris Dec 2007

Examining Incentives And Preferential Treatment Of Carpools On Managed Lane Facilities, David Ungemah, Ginger Goodin, Casey Dusza, Mark Burris

Journal of Public Transportation

As managed lanes (ML) are considered throughout more than 25 North America cities, there is a need for guidance in defining the role of carpools in tolled ML and the trade-offs between carpool exemptions and other project objectives. Increasingly, project objectives are reflecting not only mobility concerns but the need to generate revenue as well. As a result, allowing exempt or discounted users, such as carpools on priced-ML requires an evaluation of revenue impacts as well as mobility interests such as person movements, operations, and emissions. This article highlights the existing body of knowledge regarding carpooling, facilities, and incentives designed …

The Commercial Sexual Exploitation Of Children, Cynthia Hipolito Dec 2007

The Commercial Sexual Exploitation Of Children, Cynthia Hipolito

Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive

The purpose of the study is to review the thematic content analysis of the empirical literature on the commercial sexual exploitation of children. The research explores recurring themes and/ or trends in the literature by inductive content analysis. The research involves the examination of the research, that is, published books, book chapters, magazine articles, newspaper articles, and refereed journal articles on the topic of commercialized sexual exploitation of children. This very basic form of content analysis will seek to amplify issues on the topic in an organized fashion, by exploring the themes to emerge inductively and make policy recommendations. This …

Niche Partitioning Between Eisenia Foetida (Lumbricidae) And Native Earthworms In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2007, Christine Askham

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

With an increased susceptibility to invasive species due to deforestation, exotic species in tropical rainforests are quickly gaining potential to alter these already disappearing ecosystems. This study examined whether the exotic earthworm Eisenia foetida (Lumbricidae) has the potential to become an invasive species. Niche preference for level of organic soil content, level of soil texture, and humidity level was tested between native and exotic species in Monteverde, Puntarenas, Costa Rica. There was a significant difference for organic soil content level between native earthworms and E. foetida. This significant difference was present both when the exotics and natives were tested alone …

Evidence Of Subsocial Behavior Through Analysis Of Prey Capture And Feeding In A New Species Of Anelosimus (Araneae: Theridiidae), December 2007, Aaron Mitchell-Dick Dec 2007

Evidence Of Subsocial Behavior Through Analysis Of Prey Capture And Feeding In A New Species Of Anelosimus (Araneae: Theridiidae), December 2007, Aaron Mitchell-Dick

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Sociality is a little studied, little occurring, and unique trait in spider biology. Recently, in the genus Anelosimus, where sociality has originated eight or nine times, research has shown that more quasisocial species exist at low elevations and almost all subsocial species at higher elevations. The purpose of this study was to determine the sociality of a new species of Anelosimus, and add to the knowledge base of social Anelosimus spiders. Analysis of prey capture and feeding has provided evidence for a subsocial classification. In 12 webs of a female and her offspring, juveniles coordinated efforts to capture prey. Almost …

Pollen Diversity On Male Hylonycteris Underwoodi (Glossophaginae), December 2007, Julia Hoeh

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Nectivorous bats play important roles in pollination systems in the tropics, by transferring pollen carried on their bodies between the plants that they visit for nectar. The purpose of this study was to evaluate diversity indices of pollen loads found on individuals of Hylonycteris underwoodi (Glossophaginae). It was conducted in the Selvatura Adventure Park in Monteverde, Costa Rica during the rainy season, and related pollen load diversity to aspect ratio, wing tip index, and mass of individuals (N = 30 males). The pollen load on individuals had low richness (2.20 ± 0.81), diversity (0.09 ± 0.16), and evenness (0.09 ± …

Relationship Between Floral Advertisement And Pollinia Removal In Oerstedella Exasperata (Orchidaceae), December 2007, Mary Snayd Dec 2007

Relationship Between Floral Advertisement And Pollinia Removal In Oerstedella Exasperata (Orchidaceae), December 2007, Mary Snayd

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The purpose of this study was to examine how the floral displays and morphology of Oerstedella exasperata affect reproductive success. This species of orchid is typified by extreme variability in both inflorescence and floral characteristics. In particular there is a wide distribution regarding the degree of symmetry observed in the labellum. The degrees of symmetry are characterized by variations within the fringe symmetry and bilateral symmetry. Furthermore, the surface area of the labellum varies greatly within a population. These remarkably diverse phenotypic morphologies and the summation of the floral traits can enhance or reduce the reproductive success of particular species. …

Workers' Compensation, H. Michael Bagley, Daniel C. Kniffen, Katherine D. Dixon Dec 2007

Workers' Compensation, H. Michael Bagley, Daniel C. Kniffen, Katherine D. Dixon

Mercer Law Review

The year 2007 was relatively quiet for workers' compensation legislation in the Georgia General Assembly. However, there were several statutory modifications of note.

The Georgia Workers' Compensation Act has long excluded "farm laborers" from its coverage. The scope of that exclusion was clarified by including within the term farm laborer "any person employed by an employer in connection with the raising and feeding of and caring for wildlife, as such term is defined in paragraph (77) of [Official Code of Georgia Annotated ("O.C.G.A.")] Section 27-1-2." The Code section referenced defines wildlife as "any vertebrate or invertebrate animal life indigenous to …
