Spatial Aspects Of Infant Mortality And Informal Workers: The Case Of Ceara State -Brazil, Ricardo Soares Jan 2007

Spatial Aspects Of Infant Mortality And Informal Workers: The Case Of Ceara State -Brazil, Ricardo Soares

Doctoral Dissertations

High levels of infant mortality and high participation of informal workers in the labor market are living conditions faced by many developing countries. In Ceara State - Brazil, their trends during the last three decades have followed opposite directions. Whereas infant mortality has decreased substantially since the 1980s, suggesting that the country is on the right path to development, the labor market has presented increasing levels of informality, which challenges traditional theories of development. The essays of this thesis aim to investigate some aspects of these two phenomena. In particular, the first essay offers an approach to analyze if the …

Development And Application Of Methods For Analysis Of Fungal Glycosphingolipid Structure And Functional Interactions, Emma Adhiambo Arigi Jan 2007

Development And Application Of Methods For Analysis Of Fungal Glycosphingolipid Structure And Functional Interactions, Emma Adhiambo Arigi

Doctoral Dissertations

Fungal lectins from the mushrooms Polyporus squamosus and Coprinus cinereus have an affinity for beta-galactosides, with extended binding sites for the non-reducing terminal trisaccharide sequence NeuAcalpha2→6Galbeta1→4Glc/GlcNAc, and substituted beta-galactosides resembling mammalian blood group determinants, respectively. In considering the possibility that glycosylinositol phosphorylceramides (GIPCs) could be endogenous ligands of such fungal lectins, structural characterization of glycosphingolipids (GSLs) from the fruiting bodies of these mushrooms was performed. The extraction, isolation and purification of the lipids, and their subsequent characterization by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry (MS) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was performed. One monohexosylceramide (CMH) and three major GIPCs were …

Why "Managing" Biodiversity Will Fail: An Alternative Approach To Sustainable Exploitation For International Law, Kyle Ash Jan 2007

Why "Managing" Biodiversity Will Fail: An Alternative Approach To Sustainable Exploitation For International Law, Kyle Ash

Animal Law Review

The role of humans in mass extinctions necessitates an assessment of the collective human psychology responsible for the degradation of Earth’s life support systems. In this paper, the Author will cite instruments and discourse relevant to international environmental law to illustrate how an antiquated conception of biological hierarchies is condoned whenever other species are mentioned. As reflected in the law, humans do not just believe we are existentially unconnected with the rest of life, but that we have more right to live on the planet. This, ironically, allows us to rationalize activities that destroy the planet, even for ourselves. Nature …

Comparative Demography And Dietary Resource Partitioning Of Two Wild Ranging Asiatic Equid Populations, Ellen Schulz, Thomas Kaiser, Annegret Stubbe, Michael Stubbe, Ravčigijn Samjaa, Nyamsuren Batsaikhan, Joachim Wussow

Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298

Tooth wear signatures allow inference on the dietary traits of herbivorous ungulates. Comparing dietary regimes of taxonomically closely related populations further allows inference on habitat structure and food availability. The mesowear method of tooth wear evaluation has opened up a pathway to reconstruct subtle differences in dietary behavior and resource partitioning based on skeletal material as the only source of information. Eighty cheek dentitions of Asian wild asses (Equus hemionus) from the Southern Gobi (Mongolia) and 61 dentitions of African free ranging donkeys (Equus asinus) from the Emirate Sharjah (United Arab Emirates) were investigated for their …

Approval Of New Drugs By The U. S. Food And Drug Administration: Problems With The Process And Access To Unapproved Drugs, Christine M. Hoeft-Loyer

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Today, the vast majority of drugs available for patient use have gone through a rigorous system of human clinical trials supervised by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), to ensure the drugs are safe and efficacious. There are now citizen advocacy groups that seek use of drugs not yet approved by the FDA, to be administered to terminally ill patients who have exhausted all other available means of therapy. The FDA has programs for terminal patients, under the supervision of their physicians, to use unapproved drugs; however, the advocacy groups seek access to drugs in much earlier phases than is …

Current Research And Good Practice In Hiv And Aids Treatment Education, Avina Sarna, Ellen Weiss Jan 2007

Current Research And Good Practice In Hiv And Aids Treatment Education, Avina Sarna, Ellen Weiss

HIV and AIDS

This report was prepared by UNESCO and WHO for presentation at the HIV and AIDS Treatment Education Technical Consultation in Paris, November 22–23, 2005. There is a growing realization among program managers and donors that merely providing antiretroviral therapy (ART) and training health providers is not sufficient and that unless efforts are made to engage communities and individuals to improve their knowledge and understanding of HIV, AIDS, and ART, programs will not meet the targets set by these initiatives and will fall short of contributing to the goal of attaining universal access to treatment. This report describes current research and …

Engaging Advocates From Concept To Results: Summary Report Of The Advocates' Consultation On Hiv Prevention Trials: Carraguard And Voice Studies, Johannesburg, South Africa, 18-19 October 2007, Microbicide Trials Network, Population Council

HIV and AIDS

Advocate consultations are increasingly becoming the rule, not the exception in the HIV-prevention research field. As an increasing number of Phase III trials enter the field, research groups are seeking new ways to collaborate with advocates and maximize civil society input and engagement. The Advocates’ Consultation for HIV Prevention Trials: Carraguard and VOICE Studies provided leaders from African NGOs a unique opportunity to learn about the clinical trial process from beginning to end, and to collectively identify ways to influence how scientific research is formulated. Participants represented a wide range of advocacy groups from Southern African countries, including those working …

Aids-Associated Viral Oncogenesis: Overview, Charles Wood

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

It has been 25 years since the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) was first described and over 23 years since the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) associated with the disease was first discovered. In spite of the tremendous progress that was made in understanding both the disease and the virus, there are still millions of people infected, died, or living with the disease. As for the year 2005 alone, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (http://www.UNAIDS.org) estimates that there are about 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS globally, and approximately 3 million people died from AIDS in the year. Globally, it …

Modulation Of Retroviral Restriction And Proteasome Inhibitor-Resistant Turnover By Changes In The Trim5Α B-Box 2 Domain, Felipe Diaz-Griffero, Alak Kar, Michel Perron, Shi-Hua Xiang, Hassan Javanbakht, Xing Li, Joseph Sodroski Jan 2007

Modulation Of Retroviral Restriction And Proteasome Inhibitor-Resistant Turnover By Changes In The Trim5Α B-Box 2 Domain, Felipe Diaz-Griffero, Alak Kar, Michel Perron, Shi-Hua Xiang, Hassan Javanbakht, Xing Li, Joseph Sodroski

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

An intact B-box 2 domain is essential for the antiretroviral activity of TRIM5α. We modeled the structure of the B-box 2 domain of TRIM5α based on the existing three-dimensional structure of the B-box 2 domain of human TRIM29. Using this model, we altered the residues predicted to be exposed on the surface of this globular structure. Most of the alanine substitutions in these residues exerted little effect on the antiretroviral activity of human TRIM5αhu or rhesus monkey TRIM5αrh. However, alteration of arginine 119 of TRIM5αhu or the corresponding arginine 121 of TRIM5αrh diminished the abilities of …

Viral Diseases Of The Fetus, Clayton L. Kelling Jan 2007

Viral Diseases Of The Fetus, Clayton L. Kelling

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is one of the most commonly encountered and economically important pathogens of cattle in North America. Since the mid-20th century, BVDV has been recognized as a significant cause of disease of the gastrointestinal system. The impact of BVDV on reproduction was not perceived for another 30 years, when the occurrence of persistent infection in imunotolerant cattle was described.

BVDV infections may occur in cattle as acute illness- that is, bovine viral diarrhea (BVD)-or as a generally chronic condition-mucosal disease. When susceptible regnant cattle are infected with BVDV, transplacental infections usually occur. Transplacental infections may lead …

"If That Is Heaven, We Would Rather Go To Hell": Contextualizing Us-Cuba Relations, Rumbaut, Rubén G. Rumbaut

Societies Without Borders

The history of Cuba is one of conquest and rebellion. Since the arrival of Columbus, it has had two colonial masters: Spain and the United States. Spain, after the collapse of its empire, ceased to be a threat to the peoples of America. Now, the Spanish are among the principal investors in Cuba, and make up a high percentage of tourists to the island. The United States, engaged in empire-building as sole superpower and continuing to pursue a half-century-old policy of regime change in Cuba, is still seen by the Cubans as the greatest threat to their independence and sovereignty. …

Multiplex, Bead-Based Suspension Array For The Molecular Determination Of Salmonella H Serogroups, Kwai Lin Thong, John Mcquiston, Collette Fiztergerald, Patrichia Fields

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Salmonella enterica continues to be an important foodborne pathogen worldwide. Serotyping is the fundamental approach in the epidemiology of Salmonella. It consists of the immunologic classification of two surface structures, O-polysaccharide (0 antigen) and flagellin protein (H antigen). Salmonella serotypes are the basis for national surveillance networks and are critical to the identification of outbreaks. The current conventional serotyping procedure is time-consuming, requiring 3 to 5 days or more to fully detennine the serotype, thus delaying infonnation and costing laboratories in overhead. Furthennore, production and quality control of the hundreds of antisera required for serotyping are difficult and time consuming. To …

A total of 255 patients including 179 (70.2) of non-HIV and 76 (29.8) HIV-infected patients were recruited in this descriptive study. The subjects was significantly found to be male Chinese (157; 61.6 vs 74; 47.1) followed by female Malays (98; 38.4 vs 35; 35.7) (p<0.05). The majority of subjects (124; 48.6) were in the age group of 21-39 years, however, no statistical difference was found between the various age groups (p>0.05). Overall seroprevalence of latent Toxoplasma infection was 82/183 (44.8) being; 3 (3.7) positive for IgM, 74 (90.2) for IgG, and 5 (6.1) for IgG and IgM antibodies. The prevalence was more relatively found in the Chinese (28; 15.3) and Malays (27; 14.8) than others (p<0.05). While, 23/76 (30.3) of HIV-positive patients were shown Toxoplasma seropositivity. The majority of these subjects (138/181; 76.2) were significantly asymptomatic (p = 0.000), while the others were clinically evident cases of toxoplasmosis. Of this, 37 patients were included in differential diagnosis relating to ocular diseases and only 4 patients were confirmed as having ocular toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasmic encephalitis (TE) was based on presumptive diagnosis, particularly found in 5 patients with AIDS. Seventeen patients were clinically diagnosed as having malaria being; 8 for P. vivax, 4 for P. falciparum, 3 for P. malariae, and 2 for mixed infections. All cases resolved satisfactorily after treatment with antimalarial drugs. Other important emerging parasitic diseases were also detected in these patients including amebiasis (2), blastocystosis (1), cryptosporidiosis (1), filariasis (1), and giardiasis (2) during the time of this study.
